Scott Wimmer starts his rookie year with a 3rd at Daytona, after this race he was the favorite for ROTY but Kasey Kahne(who finished 41st in this race) would finish 2nd in the next two races at Rockingham and Las Vegas and get ROTY. 29. Though to keep my bases, Morgan Shepherd runs Racing with Jesus on his own 89, and the Furniture Row team ran National Day of Prayer in 2008. * First Daytona 500 where Bill Elliott was not a participant in, and instead was the debut of rookie of the year Kasey Kahne. * The only time the NBA EVER sponsored a race car, Jeff Burton ran the NBA All Star game as a sponsor. It had Shaquille O'Neal and other prominent players on the rear decklid. 54. Driving suit jackets and diecast were made. * Elliott Sadler ran a special paint scheme promoting the Great Color Quest where M&M's lost their color and the car was black and white. * First time Pennzoil did not appear on the 1, Jack Roush took Pennzoil as an associate before it was absorbed by Shell and sponsored Kevin Harvick's 2007 effort. * Two relatives of Daytona 500s winners, Larry Foyt(father AJ was a winner) and John Andretti(uncle Mario Andretti won it in 1967, John won the 1997 Pepsi 400 thirty years later) * Last Daytona 500 start for Jimmy Spencer. * Last Daytona 500 start for Johnny Benson Jr., he found a home in the Craftsman Truck Series. 55. Dale Jr. and Tony Stewart were the dominant cars and literally the only cars within 5 seconds of the lead at the end. Jr. would prevail, winning his first 500 in probably the most boring 500 in the last 25 years. 70. MAR posted: 10.13.2015 - 3:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I disagree this 500 wasn't boring most of the heavy hitters got taken out in crashes early and the long green flag run over 100 plus laps wasn't boring either it was just the two fastest cars pulled away from everyone and had flawless pit stops. In my opinion if it wasn't for the last 50 laps of the 2007 Daytona 500 that race would be considered the most boring next to the 2013 500. 71. 88&4Fan posted: 10.13.2015 - 4:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Even as a Jr fan I agree it was kind of a boring race, or at least the second half was. I mean even other plate races that have had long green flag runs or even caution free races like 2002 Talladega in the fall were exciting and the pack stayed together. But the most boring in the last 25 years? Give me a break... that "honor" goes to 2013 in a heartbeat. 2011 was pretty bad too. But I can say this, that Born On Date car Jr drove in this race (and the '05 Daytona 500) was AWESOME! One of my favorite Jr schemes of all time. 72. 88&4Fan posted: 10.13.2015 - 4:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Oh yeah and forgot about 2000. I think its a tossup between that and 2013 for which one was worse. And throw 1998 in there too, if it hadn't been for Earnhardt winning, that was a really boring race. MAR- 2007 really? I personally think that may have been one of (if not THE best) 500s ever (certainly the best one I watched) and not just because of the finish either. Had some great racing the whole race and just seemed to build up to that amazing finish. I love races like that. 73. Josh posted: 04.18.2017 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As I recall, there was some sort of rules package in place here specifically with the idea of breaking up big packs. I think it had to do with the size of the fuel cells (smaller cells = more pit stops = more smaller packs), and the aerodynamics, but I don't remember the specifics. Well, it mostly worked. I don't understand the comments about how this race was boring. There were a lot of plate races like this in the '90s where the best cars would hook up and run off and leave the rest of the field. The 1990 Daytona 500 prior to the last caution, Dale Earnhardt had a 40 second lead, by himself. The 1990 Winston 500, where the 25, 18, and 3 were clearly the class of the field, until the 25 fell out. Then, the finish consisted of the 18 trying to pass the 3, after they had put several seconds between them and the field. The 1992 Daytona 500, after the big crash halfway through, it was Morgan Shepherd chasing Davey Allison for basically the rest of the race. The 1992 DieHard 500, two cautions, one for brief rain, the other for oil, where the 4, 22, and 28 pulled away and the race finished with only those three on the lead lap, and only the 4 and the 22 in the lead draft. I'm confused as to how this ending was different from others I've mentioned. 89. In the chaos afterward Kevin Lepage's #4 Chevrolet ended up getting the back of the car way off the ground in a stoppie-like pose because of impacts with other cars. 93. Only Daytona 500 start for Larry Foyt. Last Daytona 500 starts for Ward Burton, Ricky Craven, Jimmy Spencer, Johnny Benson, and Derrike Cope (to date, not ruling out the possibility he could attempt the 500 again in the future). 95. This is also the first 500 I guess you could say I lived for, because even though I was born in 03 the 500 was before my birth. Cool. 98. I used to find this race really boring too, but honestly now that I'm older I actually find it interesting, if not exciting, because it was probably the most ?pure? 500 of the century, with a heavy emphasis on driver skill with the softer tires that wore out and separated the pack and the long green run to end. It certainly provides a welcome contrast to the absolute circus it's turned into. I almost look at it as a ?real? version of the 2021 500. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
