"We turned the lights on when the wreck was in progress," Hunter said. "We had a great piece of footage that showed the two cars, so it was really clear-cut that Gordon was in the lead." Hunter said Tony Eury, Earnhardt's crew chief, looked the video and agreed with NASCAR. The other part of the controversy was the fact that NASCAR did not get the green flag back out for a race to the finish, keeping it under caution to the end and igniting the fans anger when they realized Gordon was going to win. "Here and at Daytona we're not going to have a one-lap shootout just because of safety," Hunter said. "We're just not going to do that." Never mind the footage Nascar was watching, they had a different version of what happened. When the caution came out Jr. was clearly at least a car length ahead. I guess all the crying that Gordon does got to nascar. Second, gordon will have to try to win 8 championships. 10. He ran in the top 4 for a while and even pushed Dale Jr. into the lead one time. On lap 115 though, Mikey thought he was clear of Jeff Gordon and wasn't, Jeff turned Mikey sideways and Kerry actually helped straighten Mikey's car out. But Kerry couldn't hold onto it and hit the inside wall. Believe me when I say this, Kerry Earnhardt has talent. He can run just as good as Dale Jr. runs. If Kerry can have some racing luck, he can win races. 13. Heather posted: 02.08.2005 - 7:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) JG breaks DEI's domination at Talledega. Fans revolt. Woot. 14. In 2002 at Daytona, in the summer race, Mike Waltrip won, but the fans were pissed. Not at Waltrip, but to how the race ended. PEPSI Seat cushions were tossed on the track. Waltrip, ever the lighthearted person, thought he was being given a "Ticker-Tape-Parade"! And in Kay of 1994, here at Talladega, fans threw trash on the track. Geoff Bodine was the butt of the incident-slamming the wall as a result. He was unhurt. CONCLUSION:Do not throw trash on the track. You may hurt someone. 15. Wrecked two of his Billy Ballew Motorsports trucks in practice and one (plus seven or eight or ten others) in the actual Daytona race despite sitting on the pole. His record of failure goes on and on. Gordon was definitely ahead of Earnhardt when the caution came out, and Earnhardt gained his "carlength lead" after the yellow lights had come on. 17. From the green flag right up to the final caution, the field bumped and banged off each other mercilessly. So many cars bounced off each other that, by the halfway mark, practically every car on the track was covered in black donuts. Yes, there were 11 cautions and yes, the Big One struck again, this time involving 9 cars, but the race featured some incredible driving by just about everyone in the field. Had it not been for that, there could have very easily been twice as many cautions. Tony Stewart keeping his car from completely losing control when he crossed Jimmie Johnson's nose in the tri-oval is simply a wonder to behold. The worst part about that final caution is that we'll never know what would have happened if those cars under those circumstances had the chance to race for the win. 24. jp posted: 03.28.2009 - 11:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I saw the 33 wreck, and the fans went wild when he hit the inside wall. Even though I saw it when it was originally run and I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was on the edge of my seat during the closing stages. I had absolute chills up my spine when Jeff dove underneath to the inside and made the pass for the lead. Great race all around, and the ending was even better. So happy Jeff won this one. The icing on the cake was all the asshole Junior fans pelting the track with beer cans like babies because their little golden boy couldn't win a race. And you'll notice the whole time Jeff Gordon is above all the bullshit and handles it with class. The whole pre-race show, bumpers going to/coming back from commercials, and commentary during the race was Dale Jr. this, Dale Jr. that, DEI this, DEI that, Michael Waltrip this, Michael Waltrip that. And then the 24 ends the DEI streak. Boy that Pepsi car sure looked sharp too. They ruined those Pepsi schemes when they started adding black, then they made the base color black with blue flames, and by the end of the decade the car was totally black and sponsored by Pepsi Max. So ugly. The only Pepsi scheme I liked from the late 2000s was the Pepsi retro scheme based off of DW's 1983 car. I was happy these past 2 years they went back to being all-blue Pepsi cars. 46. They knew/know restrictor plates are just as dangerous in some form as they were/are without them. I believe the fans were more pissed with the decision to not go back to green than Jr. losing. I know I wasn't too happy about it. They could have red flagged the race, but that probably wouldn't have been appropriate with just the #25 car spinning. Fans felt like NASCAR "gave" Gordon the race instead of racing for it. 52. JSPorts posted: 12.30.2018 - 10:12 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I like consistency between tracks. If there are going to be overtime finishes, they need to be done correctly. If the point of overtime is that it guarantees the fans a green-flag finish, they ought to use the ARCA overtime rules. I, personally, don't care much for overtime, as it often results in needlessly torn up cars and ruins the days of drivers who have run up front for the entire scheduled distance. I wish they'd just go back to the old way of doing things: no overtimes, but racing back to the flag. 53. Ryan posted: 12.30.2018 - 10:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I like the idea of racing back to the flag as well, except when there are cars sitting still that have crashed sitting around the start finish line or even around turn 3 or 4. I believe NASCAR could make the judgment calls on that whether to race back to the flag or freeze the field. For example, the 2007 Daytona 500... The wreck was behind Harvick and Martin. There was no reason to the display caution flag or lights until they crossed the finish line. 54. rm posted: 12.30.2018 - 3:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ironically, 52, ARCA is changing the plate overtime rule for the coming season because of the final lap crashes last year. 55. In a Busch race in 2002 at Daytona, a big wreck with 5 to go taking out 10+ cars got the race restarted(The Daytona 500 as well had the same thing), but a one car spin at Talladega with 5 to go doesn't restart the race? That's what got all the fans upset, but no need to throw cans onto the track. Shows unsportsmanship. 60.
