This the last time he led a Cup race in his career? I was at this race and it was a hot day indeed; as it was 99 at green flag time. So was the Labor Day race later this season too. The win by Gordon by 12 seconds is a bit deceiving. Bobby Labonte was gaining on him and had a good chance of catching the ole 24 if he hadn't run out of gas with a few laps to go. Actually alot of guys ran out of gas near the end and coasted to pit road. Mayfield and Kahne were 2 that lost about 10 positions on the final lap due to this. I'd rank this race as a pretty racy one for Cali Speedway standards. 6. Busch finished only 1 lap down! Rusty had some harsh words about Tony Stewart after the race. Rusty said that Tony sideswiped him and then flipped him the bird like Rusty had done something wrong. 12. hyltonfan60 posted: 02.09.2009 - 5:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kirk Shelmerdine's sponsor was 2nd Chance Race Parts. 13. He was gaining on Jeff, though I don't recall that he was gonna catch him in time. He had the same thing happen to him the previous year at Daytona in the July race. 17. He was within a second of Gordon when he ran out of gas. 29. rm posted: 04.04.2020 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ward Burton managed to snag a top 10 with all the mayhem in the final laps, an impressive recovery from a spin earlier in the race that didn't bring out a caution. Morgan Shepherd was in line to get the free pass for the fifth caution, having just made a pit stop when the yellow came out, but didn't get the nod when race control deemed he had sped excessively coming off of pit road in an attempt to beat the pace car out. Not sure if he was fed up and parked it in response or if he had legitimate issues - hence, the green flag pit stop - and he was never mentioned again on the broadcast. He did get some love earlier on for clinging to the end of the lead lap for so long, though. Technically, Jeremy Mayfield wasn't running at the end of this race, but his pit crew sure was. Both he and teammate Kasey Kahne ran dry on the final lap, with Kahne able to limp home and complete all 500 miles. Mayfield coasted onto pit road to get some gas and a push from his pit crew, but the results sheet would imply that NASCAR didn't count his final lap since his crew pushed him past the line. 30.
