Jake posted: 10.02.2004 - 1:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) I agree. It was bull**** enough that they wasted a bunch of laps under caution and then finished the race under caution when they promised a green flag finish for the fans. That's pathetic!!! Worst race I ever went to!!! 3. Tom Jurzynski posted: 10.09.2004 - 3:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I was at this race, great racing on the track, but Nascar screwed it up majorly. 4. And Cox dosen't know what he is talking about! 5. Joe C posted: 12.04.2004 - 7:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) It was actually a cooler that hit the flagman. And it would've been better if it would've hit Brian France or Mike Helton. I was at this race as well... NASCAR's "race control" was awful. Downright pathetic. Further evidence that a bag of wet rocks could do a better job than these clowns. Good thing Johnson won, cause he was the best car all day, and overcame the NASCAR scoring mess during that one caution. And I cursed a couple times when Mark's engine blew too. That's about all I remember from this one. 6. HomeDepotKid posted: 12.23.2004 - 11:30 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Harvick and Kenseth actually finished higher than they were scored. "Tag, You're It!" The two played Bumper Cars at the end, and NASCAR got pissed and dropped their positions by 10. 7. The only ecitement was Kenseth and Harvick spinning each other (although that helped the race to end under caution) Just a not: Dale Jarrett was running in 3rd place when his engine went with a few left. 9. The car appears during the pace lap at the 5:33 mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjH3gIbXWg8 I guess that makes the last Cup start by a Pontiac Carl Long's #02 ride at Las Vegas 2004, unless I'm missing something. 20. 00andJoe posted: 06.16.2011 - 3:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brock, Hermie Sadler ran a Pontiac at the spring Bristol race in 2004, I believe. 21. Could have been one of the best Pocono races ever if the battle between Mayfield and Johnson was allowed to play out instead of the race ending under caution. 22. Kirk Shelmerdine had a deal with a local trucking company to sponsor him for this race, and apparently it came with its own cheering section in the stands. Shelmerdine was the slowest car in the field by far after Kevin Lepage pulled in, but his supporters in chicken-bone alley didn't care one bit. The FOX cameras showed fans holding up #72 signs and rooting Shelmerdine on eagerly whenever he came down the frontstretch. One of just two PA drivers in the field, he didn't last too long past the first round of pit stops and finished 40th. 31. rm posted: 04.04.2020 - 11:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) On a less fun note, many felt that this race was yet another misstep by NASCAR officiating and race control. With a string of controversies already under their belt for 2004 (Joe Ruttman's infamous 1-lap start-and-park at Rockingham, Jeff Gordon t-boning a car at Darlington that he said "shouldn't have even been out there," the track coming apart at Martinsville, the finish at Talladega, the big crash at Dover, etc), this race was just the latest on the list. 6 cautions for oil/fluid on the track waved in this one, including one that ended the race under the yellow. Race control was taking no chances after Casey Mears appeared to have a tire rub at Dover late, only to find out that it was oil when leader Kasey Kahne ran through it and crashed. Fans, drivers and teams criticized race control for overcorrecting and being trigger-happy with the yellow flag here. This wound up being one of the finishes that led to the adoption of the GWC rule late on in the summer. This was the first race where the lucky dog/free pass procedure more or less matched what the rule is today. The 22 races in which the rule was being fine-tuned caused confusion among pretty much anybody involved, from drivers to teams to broadcasters to fans. 32.
