Jones had a nice run going in the Don Arnold machine, running around eighteenth, before Kyle Petty got in the back of him and sent him hard in the fence. 4. A last lap side-by-side duel seemed inevitable until the caution came out on the last lap for the P.J. Jones wreck. Ultimately, it was this race that led to NASCAR's institution of green/white/checkered in all three series, after fans complained that they were robbed of a potentially great finish. Ironically, however, this race, under the current rules, would not have had a GWC finish. 5. This was also the last time he led more than 4 laps in a race. 6. blaneyfan66 posted: 04.16.2010 - 6:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And nobody talks about a great recovery for Dave Blaney to finish 15th 7. This race was run on Father's Day and as such Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Waltrip, Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, Brian Vickers, Sterling Marlin, Casey Mears, Jamie McMurray, Kyle Petty and Jimmie Johnson all ran special Father's Day paint jobs; most were just the car's normal paint jobs with some additional "Father's Day" or "Thanks Dad" decals but Kyle Petty ran a special Petty Blue car to honor Richard. Ironically the most notable one of the bunch DNQed as Kerry Earnhardt was to run a throwback gold-and-black Bass Pro Shops look to honor his father (like Big E had for the 1998 Winston) but failed to qualify, it was not run at another race afterward. 8. That car was Terry Labonte, explaining why he didn't finish the race. Not one person on the broadcast mentioned it. 11. The cars could run closer together, spreading out didn't happen until 25 laps in and the cars could pass each other. I wish the racing was like this today. 18. rm posted: 02.14.2017 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Kahne was on a tear in this one, who knows if he would have caught Newman for sure or not but it would have been a fantastic finish if we got to see that last corner play out. Biffle spun out on the backstretch with two to go but no caution was thrown as he was mostly out of the way. PJ Jones was giving the 50 car probably the best run it had all year but he had his hands full with that thing - his car was shown in the middle of a gaggle with three to go and the announcers said he about wrecked. Not sure if they ever showed a replay of Jones' crash but it looked like he hit the wall a ton based off of the damage from his car. Another interesting thing - Jimmie Johnson had a gear issue near the end of the race and had a problem getting into high gear. Kahne restarted 5th with 4 to go, behind Jimmie. It's also possible Kahne would have won the race if he got a better jump on Jimmie or if Jimmie got a better jump on the restart in general. A few other storylines to note: This was also one of the last great runs for Sterling Marlin, he led a lot of laps in the middle-late section of the race & appeared to have a top 5 locked up but faded suddenly with just a couple laps to go and wound up 6th. It was a nice rebound after 3 consecutive DNFs but he finished in the middle of the pack for much of the rest of the season. He looked to be back to his old self at the start of 2005, placing as high as 6th in the points after the first Texas race; however Sterling struggled tremendously the rest of the year that saw the passing of his father Coo Coo and his worst points finish in nearly 20 years. Michael Waltrip placed 10th during the middle of a two month tear that saw him collect 6 top tens in 8 races while finishing worse than 13th just once. He rose from 30th in the points after Richmond to a season high 16th after the first New Hampshire race. He ultimately faded down the stretch, collecting just one more top 10 after that point. Waltrip pretty much repeated the "rising out of an early season rut" stunt the next summer but after fading even harder to finish the 2005 season he left DEI. Jeff Burton ran an unsponsored car here, like he did many other times throughout the season as Roush struggled to find sponsorship. When the series returned to Michigan later in the summer, Burton was driving the 30 car for Richard Childress and some guy named Carl Edwards made his Cup debut and finished 10th. As someone else already mentioned, Dave Blaney returned to Childress as Johnny Sauter's replacement and had a nice day by finishing 15th. Despite the nice run, that role turned out to be only temporary as the aforementioned Burton wound up replacing Blaney at the second Michigan race. This was the only year between 2000 and 2013 that Blaney didn't attempt the full schedule in a season that saw him run races with multiple races with Bill Davis and RCR while making a pair of odd one-offs with Ultra Motorsports (their last Cup race, as it turned out) and Jack Roush (starting the fall Charlotte race when Carl Edwards failed to get to the track in time, eventually turning it over to Carl). 19. @statscrash posted: 06.17.2019 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ poor restarts the story of Kasey Kahne career. 20. It has happened 5 times just since the start of the 2018 season, and it was close to happening quite a few other times (like 3 out of the top 4 or 5 from the same team). Which ultimately led nowhere, for Gordon, since the engine gave out shortly thereafter. Perhaps fittingly, the streak had begun with a race that Gordon was the polesitter for in June 2001, a race that Gordon won in a memorable finish over Ricky Rudd, the second-place starter AND lap 1 leader that day. 29. I honestly believe they either should've thrown the caution a lap earlier due to the fact that a car or 2 wrecked with 2 to go, or that they shouldn't have thrown a caution at all. What could've been a great finish turned into a poorly timed caution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
