Nice 3rd by Scott Pruett. 18. Brock Beard posted: 08.20.2008 - 2:46 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Finally saw this race for the first time and, actually, it wasn't anywhere near as boring of a race as I expected. Gordon dominated, certainly, but it was an excellent day for Chip Ganassi (except for Sterling Marlin's struggles) with McMurray, Pruett, and later, even Casey Mears working their way into the top 5. Pruett was running near-identical lap times to Gordon, McMurray was steady throughout the race, and Mears even slammed doors with Rusty Wallace racing for 3rd late in the race. Also very surprising top-20 runs for west coast driver Jim Inglebright and German road racer Klaus Graf in their Cup Series debuts. Jeff Burton (in an unsponsored car) and Elliott Sadler spun in the middle stages of the race, but came back for a pair of great finishes while Dale Jr. pulled a 180, hit the inside wall in the Chute, was spun again some laps later, and still finished 11th. Tony Stewart was also involved in a very early incident with Ward Burton and came back to finish 15th. There were some unfortunate struggles that ended promising runs as well. Besides the terrible luck for Robby Gordon and Rusty Wallace, Kurt Busch led the opening lap, but lost a ton of laps when he had on oil leak. Kasey Kahne used pit strategy to get up to 2nd, but spun after running off course in turn 2. Brian Vickers was easily a top 15 car all day until he spun late in turn 11. Jeremy Mayfield was in the top 10 in the final 10 laps, but he spun in turn four on his old tires. When Mayfield returned to the track, he nearly wrecked Ricky Craven and blocked Ken Schrader, forcing Schrader to lose several spots himself. And, after being involved in a couple early incidents himself, then-rookie Scott Riggs hit the tire barrier A TON in turn 10, but somehow got his heavily-damaged Chevy back to pit road. 19. Inglebright knows the Sonoma track well so RCR drafted him in to take over the #30 America Online Chevrolet for this one to serve as something as a road course ringer in place of its new normal driver Dave Blaney. Jeff Burton comes home ninth in a plain white, unsponsored Roush Racing #99 Ford. His finished ninth in both his first and last Sonoma outings for the Cat in the Hat. 45. It's also interesting to note that Busch has been teammates with Newman and Harvick, and Harvick and Newman essentially switched teams at one time. 47. Boris Said dominated the race but crashed out when the race went into a GWC finish, with Kevin Harvick suffering the same fate. Tom Hubert exited early on with a transmission failure. Said mostly made up for the crash here, tying his career-best Cup finish at the time by finishing 6th. RCR teammates Kevin Harvick and Jim Inglebright came home 12th and 19th, respectively, while Tom Hubert was parked after turning 5 laps in Kirk Shelmerdine's badly underpowered Ford. Sonoma moved some tire barriers around in an effort to improve driver safety and increase the amount of green-flag racing, moving the tires 100 feet further back in some places. Naturally, the drivers made sure to either still hit the tires or hit the jersey barriers/concrete walls instead. NASCAR also said they were going to make the effort to not call full-course cautions if they really didn't need to, but the 6 cautions in this race matched the 2003 race's number anyway. Austin Cameron smacked the wall just past the start-finish line on the very first lap and spent some time behind the wall to make repairs. When he came back on the track, the right side door number was now duct tape instead. He had a very bad day, to say the least. Among the drivers who spun/crashed but didn't bring out a caution: Austin Cameron (three times), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (twice), Scott Riggs (twice), Brendan Gaughan (twice), Brandon Ash, Rusty Wallace, Kurt Busch, Sterling Marlin (twice), Robby Gordon (twice), Matt Kenseth, Bobby Labonte, Larry Gunselman, Jeff Burton, Brian Vickers, and Jeremy Mayfield. 50. Brock Beard's Rise of the Field Fillers is just as superb as I thought it would be. 53. Unfortunately, he got boxed in and lost a couple of spots on his final pit stop and ran out of time to catch Jeff Gordon at the end. But all race long, Pruett was better than Gordon on the long run, and had Pruett come out of the pits right behind Gordon (which is how they entered), Pruett may well have won this race. The stats may show that Gordon dominated, but Pruett stayed right with him all race long. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
