Lucky at Daytona because Mikey's car handling went away. DEI still is the best at the plate tracks!!!! 3. How convient for Jr. to be forced into the grass by the #24. DEI still rules restrictor plate tracks. You know what they say, "What comes around goes around" 5. But overall DEI still rules plate tracks. 7. mike helton posted: 01.17.2005 - 8:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 9 coke cars vs. 1 pepsi car. Getting plowed into the grass on pit road didn't help, either. 11. Dave posted: 05.10.2005 - 2:27 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Uh Mr. Gordon has won 4 of the last 5 plate races, including the last 2 at Daytona, this was no fluke, and the dominance is over. 12. Larry Gunselman was in the 98 car in this race, and he too finished the race a spot behind Shepherd, 4 laps down. Also, I would appreciate it if you spelled Shepherd's last name correctly, jp and Dave. 23. Cooper posted: 05.16.2010 - 7:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) On record, this was one of the worst races, in my memory. The last 80 laps were green, and there was no pack racing. With 6 to go I thought things were going to get dicey but they finished single file. The main pack was basically 5-8 cars, and everybody was happy to run where they were. This race was notorious for coca cola ruining Pepsi's sponsorship of the race, as Coca Cola ran a record amount of cars with Coke decals; 8. I was glad to see the Pepsi affiliated car of Jeff Gordon win and slam Coca Cola down. Coke then took Pepsi's sponsorship of the race in 2007, ending the long relationship of Pepsi and Daytona. 24. Rusty posted: 04.10.2011 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I remember going to this race. I sat in sponsorship suites behind Rusty Wallace's pit all night. It was an uneventful race, but will always be special to me as it was the first Cup race I got to see in person. The things I remember most where all those Coca Cola C2 cars running, Jeff Gordon dominating, and Dale Jr. being shoved into the grass on pit road. 25. 00andJoe posted: 05.15.2011 - 8:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #98 was a Ray Evernham-owned car. 26. RaceFanX posted: 01.13.2013 - 10:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsors: #9 Kasey Kahne and #19 Jeremy Mayfield- Dodge Dealers / UAW / Popeye It should be noted the Popeye paint jobs were tie-ins with the classic sailor man cartoons and not the fried chicken chain. Mayfield's car only had Popeye while Kahne's car had Popeye fighting his rival Bluto. Ward Burton caught some air in a practice crash, Kahne got loose off turn 2 and went up the race track pinching Burton against the wall and launching the NetZero Chevy briefly before it came back down on all fours. Burton had a reverse paint job for this race. 29. Unser1 posted: 01.15.2013 - 4:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Despite trying to crash the Pepsi 400 for the launch of Coca-Cola C2 in the long run the drink failed in the American market. Coca-Cola C2, first introduced to consumers a month before this race, was a 'mid-calorie cola' and sort of a mix between a regular and a diet drink. The whole mid-calorie drink fad did not find its niche in the market and it was discontinued in 2007 (its competitor Pepsi Edge lasted only a year and died in 2005). Ironically one of the main reasons Coke C2 failed was the introducion of the zero-calorie Coca-Cola Zero to the market which caught on, eventually Coke outbid Pepsi for naming rights and this race would eventually become the Coke Zero 400. 30. Tough shit. Maybe he should have backed off instead of driving in the grass. In winning this race: *Jeff Gordon wins for the first time driving the Pepsi-sponsored car in the Pepsi-sponsored race. *Jeff Gordon sweeps both races he drove the Pepsi-sponsored car in. He won the first race at Talladega. *In both of those races, he beats Dale Earnhardt, Jr./Michael Waltrip/DEI and ends their short-lived dominance at plate tracks. *He also ruins Coca-Cola's attempt to crash the party by defeating 8 cars (8!) with various red Coca-Cola C2 paint schemes. None of them could best Gordon. *Leads the most laps in the race, and has the dominant car all night. And as usual during this time period, we got to hear Darrell Waltrip kiss Dale Jr's ass all night long and make every excuse imaginable in the book about how he lost the race. A variation of parts of this race were re-created for the prologue in NASCAR 06: Total Team Control. One of my favorite Jeff Gordon wins. And again, a sharp looking Pepsi car. 39. Watching the guys slip and struggle with handling was awesome. Now the big packs make it so predictable. 2 The Big Ones, 3 Green white checkered finishes, overtime, manufactured garbage... 42. Clean sweep of the Pepsi races; He also won the Aaron's 499 at Talladega, beating Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in both instances. Great times. 45.
