When Jimmie Johnson, a Gatorade-backed driver, hopped out of his dominant Chevy he did not throw the Powerade bottle as most Gatorade drivers did and were reprimanded for, but instead took an obnoxious Lowe's sign and placed it over the bottle. The move prompted NASCAR to tell all teams that "victory lane protocol will be followed". This caused NASCAR to overeact the next week at Indy when Jeff Gordon won and had an impromptu celebration on the frontstretch. Then again it could also be said that the sponsor savvy Gordon parked there on purpose. Casey Mears won his first Cup pole and Kasey Kahne had a great run despite damage to his car from being collected in Tony Stewart's wreck. 7. We'll never see something like Rusty Wallace's 1989 Winston Cup Championship celebration again, when he jumped up and down on the roof 3 or 4 times, jumped down to the hood, and then to the ground. These days, if someone did that, NA$CAR would take away all of his or her points! 8. Steve posted: 12.05.2006 - 3:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Last attempt for old Junie Donlavey's team. 9. And guess what - it was on the 31st August. He was lucky that Sunday didn't make it to July in 2004 and that the other Sunday was still in August and not in September in 2008, otherwise he would be completely winless in August. 26. Anthony posted: 06.08.2017 - 10:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Johnson is 232 points in front in the points after this race. Without any Chase formats, he would have points raced from this point and probably romped to the championship with a race or two to spare. Knowing they could breeze into the Chase, the team went into "experimental" mode and somehow had 2 engine failures in 2 weeks, with no problems in any race beforehand. If there was no Chase, those problems wouldn't have happened. The 2004 Championship was decided at this point if there was no Chase. 27. Foote posted: 03.31.2020 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Can drivers/teams simply choose to list their status as "handling" if they crash out? Jeff Burton didn't retire due to handling problems, he simply crashed hard. I've always wondered this. 33. RaceFanX posted: 03.31.2020 - 4:20 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Handling in this context usually means the team tried to fix it and got back out only for the car to prove undrivable afterward so they had to retire it. The era of the crash clock has done away with a lot of the longer-term repair efforts in modern NASCAR. 34. Foote posted: 03.31.2020 - 5:02 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) @33 Gotcha. Burton's car was definitely not capable of running another lap (unless they had another rear clip lying around) but I assume Nascar just shrugs if a team lists handling. It doesn't change anything. 35. JSPorts posted: 03.31.2020 - 6:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Did he never go back out of the garage and on track? Cause if not, it seems like the DNF reason would be listed as "crash." 36. Foote posted: 04.02.2020 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @35 That car never went back out on any track. and is likely buried in a car graveyard somewhere. This was the first race at Pocono-- a dangerously fast track-- with safer barriers and thank goodness they were there because Burton still limped away from the wreck. 37. rm posted: 04.06.2020 - 1:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Earnhardt Jr. had struggled mightily at the start of the race, outside of the pain he was still in from his burns. Earnhardt had plummeted outside the top 35 by lap 20 and went a lap down before the first caution, at which point the driver change to John Andretti was orchestrated. Andretti fared no better, hitting the wall under green and getting black flagged 25 laps later for being too slow - a fate that had already befallen Kirk Shelmerdine and Carl Long earlier in the race. The team brought Andretti back to the garage to work on it, not wanting to get parked after only making adjustments on pit road. They were bailed out by a caution waving just a few laps later when Morgan Shepherd - the only car running behind Andretti at the time - lost an engine and they were able to rejoin the race before losing too many laps. DEI teammate Michael Waltrip didn't run much better, also dropping to the back of the pack before losing an engine and spitting debris out on the track at the halfway mark. As if Pocono wasn't a strange enough place sometimes, a tow truck was briefly stuck in the mud when trying to retrieve Tony Stewart's wrecked car. Dave Blaney was having transmission issues that relegated him to being the final car running at the finish. The TNT crew was able to find a silver lining for him, though. His then-10-year old son Ryan Blaney won a quarter midget race held the day before the Cup race. Ryan Blaney wouldn't get to race at the Tricky Triangle itself for 9 more years, winning in his first attempt at a Truck race in 2013. 38. Of course just about two months later would be the terrible plane crash that killed 10 people including Rick's older brother John, his twin nieces, and his son Ricky. 39.
