A few late restarts helped give him a cushion over Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler. Overall, one spectacular race! 2. It was the first race in NASCAR's top division, ever, that went longer than the scheduled distance. 3. Also, Kasey Kahne stepped way over the line in this race. He slammed Brendan Gaughan head-on into the wall and body-slammed Dale Jr's car w/ 2 laps to go while battling for 4th. It cut Junior's tire down and he finished 27th. If Kasey wants to have respect of fellow drivers, he has to learn how to race. 5. You mean to tell me you're counting that pile of BS the FIA tried to cover up as the 2005 US Grand Prix???!!! Tony never led the race but he made a great save coming off turn two, spinning sideways but never turning a full 360 and getting the car back in line after losing only two positions. Nice silver paint scheme too. 11. Firehawk posted: 03.20.2006 - 12:48 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Jeff Gordon's "Coronation" in the 2004 edition of the "400" may be his most dominant. Leading all but 37 of the 161 laps, the Dupont car was unstoppable taking only 18 laps to move from 11th on the grid to the lead, a position he would give up only once from that point to the checkers. 12. Anonymous0 posted: 05.19.2006 - 3:53 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) I didn't want Gordon but I was more mad that Jr while running 6th completely disapears and nothing is explained as to what happened until about Tuesday or so of that week,Mark and Jr had at the very least 5th and 6th but it ended up being 25th and 27th. 13. Jesse posted: 10.23.2008 - 11:58 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This was the race that Sterling Marlin's car caught on fire because he didn't pit for a flat tire. The caution had come out and the Coors Light car had a flat tire. Sterling didn't come into the pits because pit road was closed and he didn't want to lose a lap so he stayed out. Well, the tire disintegrated (this being a 2.5 mile long track and all) and Sterling was forced to exit the car when he got to his pit box because his car was on fire--lots of smoke! The announcers were being pretty hard on him too since it seemed obvious that you can't drive around Indy on a flat without damaging your car. Later in the race, Robby Gordon does the same thing! The announcers begin to berate him thinking the same thing will happen to Robby that happened to Sterling. There is smoke coming from Robby Gordon's car indicating that it is definitely on fire but the tire changer changes the tire and Robby goes on and finishes on the lead lap! That tire changer deserved a bonus that day--he probably got burned. 19. Art D posted: 02.28.2010 - 3:15 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) 69th career win for J. I'd understand it if I watching it as a fan at a racetrack and wanted to see the race end under green. 32. The cars follow so much closer and can make passes. Its still single file most of the time, but there was enough to keep one entertained. I wish it was like this now. 38. It's pretty cool to me that Jeff won this race 10 years after he won the inaugural, and then 10 years later he wins his 5th on the 20th anniversary of the inaugural. As far as the NASCAR side of Indianapolis is concerned, this is the House That Gordon Built. 39. Probably one of the many reasons why he left to focus on WBWF. 42. rm posted: 04.06.2020 - 2:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 09 had its usual Miccosukee Gaming & Resorts sponsorship for this race Free passes: First - none Second - #98 Third - none Fourth - none (to add to this, the debris was on the frontstretch, it came from the cut left front tire of Tony Raines) Fifth - #9 Sixth - #30 Seventh - none Eighth - #40 Ninth - #45 (to add to this, the debris was on the backstretch, it came from the cut left front tire of Robby Gordon) Tenth - #30 (to add to this, the debris was in turn 4, and it was believed to be from Sterling Marlin's car) Eleventh - #45 Twelfth - none (to add to this, the #5 wasn't involved in this caution as he'd crashed out 80+ laps earlier and never returned to the track) Thirteenth - none Brett Bodine DNQ'd the Brickyard 400 the year before in his final Cup attempt. As the pace car driver here, he led 47 laps in a messy race. Championship leader Jimmie Johnson had just his third DNF of the season here. Johnson spun early on after complaining of a very loose car - and if Jimmie's complaining about a car being way too loose, it's gotta be undrivable for almost anyone else! - and the team surmised that the eventual engine failure stemmed from over-revving the engine there, as well as 200+ mph (and 9600+ RPM) the Hendrick motors were pushing at the end of the long straights. Sterling Marlin suffered near instant-karma for deliberately not pitting, as mentioned in previous comments. The car caught fire just a couple seconds, if that, after he sped past the entrance to pit road. Tire wear became an issue in this race as teams ignored the suggested minimum tire pressure from Goodyear for both front tires. No, 2008 was not the first tire fiasco at the Brickyard, on the off chance that anyone actually believed that. Michael Waltrip, Tony Raines, Robby Gordon, Scott Wimmer & Sterling Marlin had flat left fronts while Jason Leffler, Ricky Rudd, Matt Kenseth, Robby Gordon (again!) and Kasey Kahne had flat right fronts. Especially concerning was that Leffler and Waltrip each had less than 5 laps on their tires at the time of their issues. The frontstretch pileup in this race sure gives the one from the 2017 race a run for its money. Bonus points for the one from this race for coming on a single-file restart, as well as featuring the heavily-damaged car of Scott Riggs for coming back across the track and taking out three more cars at low speed. Dale Jarrett came that close to what would have been the third Brickyard win for him and second for crew chief Mike Ford. It was a banner day for the two Yates cars, rounding out the podium behind Jeff Gordon, and a massive turnaround from where they had been a year ago at this point. Elliott Sadler had barely hung around the top 20 in points while Jarrett was struggling to keep above 30th in points. With a vow to increase reliability from both Robert and Doug Yates, the two RYR cars very much turned it around in 2004. While neither Jarrett nor Sadler could ever pin down a win at Indy after this, one of Jarrett's pit crew members has kissed the bricks since: catch can man Jason Burdett won the 2018 Xfinity race as Justin Allgaier's crew chief. 43.
