Jimmie Johnson may not have had the fastest car, but he put himself in a position to win, and held off Martin. Very emotional win. 5. He should've been penalized for just driving into the back of Dale Jr. and trying to cost him a championship. He must a problem w/ DEI because he just drove Mikey into the wall in the Truck race at Charlotte while they were battling for the lead. 6. But I guess since its NASCAR's golden boy, it has to be the other driver's fault, right? 9. Jake posted: 12.22.2004 - 8:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) A lot of people know that Carl Edwards is talented and has a bright future ahead of him. But his driving style needs some tuning to it. 10. HomeDepotKid posted: 12.23.2004 - 11:28 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) I'll settle this. It was Junior's fault. He went up on Carl. Carl had no time to react. If he backed off, he would have screwed other drivers up. He did nothing wrong, and his driving style needs no tuning. Carl Edwards is a fantastic driver. It was just a simple racing accident. Junior fans need to learn to give their driver some responsibility for their actions. (I'm a Tony fan, and I've called the fault on Tony for some incidents, like at Darlington with he and Hillenburg.) But that wreck was not Edwards' fault. It was Junior's, and that fault really isn't fair to blame on Junior because it was just a racing accident and he miscalculated the position of his and Carl's cars. Hell, Junior blamed himself as well. What I don't get, though, is how Biffle ran Martin up the track during the race. That was Mark's race, not Johnson's. The race also featured the deepest entry list of the season. 11. Jake posted: 01.02.2005 - 6:36 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) OK, it's time to admit it. Dale Jr. made a mistake when he came up in front of Carl. It wasn't Carl Edwards' fault. I learned from this that I was wrong the whole time. Carl's a good driver, he's not aggressive. I learned from people on this website and from what Dale Jr. said in his interview, that he and you guys were right the whole time. Thanks for teaching me this lesson where you're supposed think before you speak, and then admit that your favorite driver made a mistake, not the one you think made a mistake. 12. Steve posted: 11.11.2006 - 10:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You're right, HomeDepotKid. And Dale Jr. very maturely accepted responsibility for the crash, though he very well could have blamed Edwards. I didn't see anything wrong with Biffle wanting to get a lap back form Mark Martin, but he should have passed him on the high side (he had fresh tires) instead of risking the allowance of Jimmie Johnson to pass his Roush Racing teammate. In the words of David Hobbs, "What were you thinking?" If the Top 35 rule was in effect for this race, Truex and Yeley would have been replaced in the starting grid by the two Scotts: rookies Riggs and Wimmer. 16. I believe that Nemechek has some talent, maybe not championship material, but has some nevertheless. 21. But after the ridiculous sequence of events last year, in which teams of similar caliber to the #10 and #22 found themselves on the outside looking in for 10-20 races, I've got to write the top-35 rule off as one of the worst creations ever imposed by NASCAR. Sure, the provisional system was convoluted and could have used some tweaking, but for the most part it worked fine. Missing one race didn't exactly hurt Riggs and Wimmer's teams in the long run, but missing THIRTEEN races was a tremendous setback for Brian Vickers and the #83 Red Bull Toyota last year, as every time they missed the top-7 cut in qualifying, the hole only grew deeper for what looked to be a fairly competitive team. Now, teams on the wrong side of the owner points spectrum have to focus on qualifying setups and just scraping together enough points to try to secure a guaranteed spot, while the rest of the Sprint Cup Series can freely focus on the race without any regard to time trials, if so desired. NASCAR claims that the new, cheaper Car of Tomorrow will make it easier for new organizations to enter the sport and be competitive, but woe betide the team that qualifies ninth-fastest only to go home because seven of the top-eight guys were outside the top-35. (Sounds crazy, right? It happened to A.J. Allmendinger at 'Dega last fall, who DNQ'd along with four other teams who boasted top-fifteen qualifying times.) NASCAR's all about change these days, and here's one that desperately needs to be made. The top-35 rule became archaic almost as soon as it was instituted. It won't hurt to save a few spots for legitimate contenders (four provisionals, perhaps) but otherwise, it's time to let the fastest cars race on Sunday. 22. most posted: 04.15.2008 - 8:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The top 35 rule was created because of the 10 and 22 and those are 2 of the teams hurting so bad because of it now! My own father, who could watch football players beat the QBs head in with their helmets without getting a penalty and not say it was fixed, agrees that the 04 Martinsville, Atlanta, and Darlington races were blatently fixed by NASCAR because of the plane tragedy. Prior to the plane thing, Jimmie wasn't even good enough for a top-5 points finish, and Jeff would have been 100 points back of Kurt. 30. Actually, the top 11 drivers on speed were all GOGH'ers (Dale Jarrett qualified 8th but had to take the Past Champion's provisional as a result). With the system you talked about, Paul Menard, Jeff Green, David Stremme, Jamie McMurray, Aric Almirola, Johnny Sauter, Ken Schrader, and David Ragan would have missed that race (all 8 made it in via the top-35 rule). Jeff Gordon would have started 39th, followed by Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Kurt Busch with the Past Champion's provisional. 35. Junior could have been at least near Kurt in points had he finished the race or let Edwards go. But Jr. also blew his chances when he uttered "shit" in victory lane back at the EA Sports 500 which gave Kurt Busch the lead in the first place along with his win in the Sylvania 300. This was the best shot Junior had at winning a championship and he blew it two times over and then Teresa Earnhardt wiped them from the face of the Earth for the next year as they swapped crews. Junior would win at Phoenix but the damage was already done. I don't believe NASCAR fixed the races then so Jimmie would win, this one was understandable after the plane crash. 38.
