I wish the race was 10 laps shorter so Jamie McMurray could win. I'm excited about the last race @ Homestead. I think Dale Jr. still has a shot. But if he can't win the championship then I sure as hell hope Kurt Busch wins it. Congrats to Jamie locking up 11th and $1,000,000. THANKS SOUTHERN 500 FOR ALL THE MEMORIES. 2. As for the race, somebody was pissed that Johnson won-you can see in the videotape, when Johnson rounds turn 4, someone throwing a piece of rubbish on the track. Whazzupwitdat? 5. Jake posted: 12.20.2004 - 1:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) I wasn't glad to see this race off the schedule. I care much about the history of the sport. When they come back to Darlington in May '05, instead of callin' it the Carolina Dodge Dealers 500, it should be the Carolina Dodge Dealers Southern 500. I'm not happy that they took a great event off the schedule. Every since the day Brian France took over, he's done nothin' but try to destroy the sport. The only good things he's done are adding the G-W-C and the 2nd race at Phoenix. 7. Jake posted: 12.20.2004 - 1:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) and closing Rockingham, I forgot that. France was stupid enough to close Nazareth, one of my home tracks. 8. Anonymous posted: 02.24.2005 - 6:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Of course, close Rockingham because Earnhardt, Jr. drives like a granny in a minivan at that one, add a second date at Phoenix because Earnhardt, Jr. has two straight victories there -- I'm sure you wouldn't mind seeing six or seven more races at Talladega added to the schedule too, right? 9. Andre posted: 10.07.2010 - 3:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think that this race, coupled with the Lowe's race, are the two that really helped the 97 team win the championship. The night race at Lowe's had Kurt involved in a lap one pileup, then flying through the grass late in the game. He managed a decent top-10 run when Johnson and Gordon finished 1-2. Then in this race, they had to change a battery under a late caution and again manage a top-10 finish, after Jimmie wins and Jeff finishes 3rd. I'm not Kurt Busch fan, and I was pretty mad when he won the title, but you've gotta give it to him and the team - they sure worked hard at that title. 16. Darlington still had 2 race dates in 2004. 2.) This caused NASCAR getting a rid of Rockingham's 2nd racing date 3.) Brian France decided to give Auto Club Speedway a 2nd race. 4.) Brian France and NBC at time felt Darlington was to small of a market for having a NASCAR Labor Day and and decided to screw Labor Day tradition as a result. 5.) Brian France gave Auto Club Speedway on Labor Day Weekend due to the track being a big market and to please NBC also. 30. sdchargers4ever posted: 04.22.2017 - 11:25 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Fontana got the Darlington date and Darlington got the Rockingham date. Maybe so the second Fontana race wouldn't be close to the CART race, and Darlington was the only August/September track that isn't super cold in November. 31. Eric posted: 04.22.2017 - 11:26 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) @28, Just be happy that Darlington got its Labor Day weekend date after what happened there. What happened after Auto Club getting Darlington's Labor Day date was the following: 1.) Auto Club Speedway's attendance started to decline due to not able to handle 2 race dates and it got worse each year when it had 2 race dates. 2.) Darlington getting its Labor Day race taken away made NASCAR fans angry and Auto Club Speedway suffered as a result. 3.) Brian France decided to take away Auto Club Labor Day Race Date after 2008 due it getting disappointing crowds and give the date to Atlanta Speedway. 4.) Bruton Smith decided he didn't want Atlanta to have a Labor Day weekend race anymore and Darlington got its Labor Day back. 32. Not only has it gotten the Labor Day date back, it's a great weekend of throwback paint schemes and festivities. I went in 2017 and am going again this season and can't wait. One of the few things NASCAR has going right for it right now. 34. Tarheel posted: 08.23.2018 - 1:59 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) I about froze my ass off that weekend. Some friends and I got last minute tickets, threw some cheap one man tents in the truck, and off we went. Woke up Mondaynday morning with what seemed to be a foot of frost on the outsides of our tents. We threw everything back in the truck and hauled ass to The Waffle House in Florence for breakfast and gallons of coffee. 35. Sounds like it dipped below freezing Sunday overnight. 36. Ryan posted: 08.23.2018 - 6:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @34 Sounds like a heck of a time. We did something similar in 1988 (spring 500 miler race) and 2008 (May 500 miler). 37. Tarheel posted: 08.23.2018 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 35, I'm pretty sure it dipped below freezing Sunday night. The race was pretty good too. Kurt Busch almost took himself out of the championship by nearly hitting the end of pit wall. Carl Edwards made a statement, he didn't lead any laps but at the very end of the long green flag runs he was the fastest car on the track in just his twelfth start. 38.
