Stewart finished seventh and there's a reason why. 5. Naahhh.. doesn't always mean you have the best car (or truck). All things aside, Gordon, Stewart and Waltrip were definitely the class of the field yesterday. In a perfect world, they would've all been on the podium and would've settled the win among themselves. 7. Mike D posted: 02.22.2005 - 1:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Very true, ok point taken. 8. I think everyone here thought Stewart had it bagged until that last 13 lap dash. Goes to show you that the best car(or truck) doesn't always win. Hat's off to Jeff and the 24 team on a well earned, and hard fought win. Time to get that 5th championship. 11. abcdefghijkl posted: 02.25.2005 - 2:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tony was holding guys behind him too much, thats why when those guys decided to go, he ended up 7th, cause they saved the best for the end 12. However, tens of millions of dollars on renovations and they overlook adding bathrooms in the grandstands! How convenient. I lost about 30 to 50 laps on being in line for the bathroom. Well done Gordon on that win, but the big story is in 9th place. Kevin LePage. A field filler? He starts the season 9th in points. Not bad! The end was hellacious, tho. Anyone could have won. 13. abcdefghijkl posted: 02.26.2005 - 1:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "However, tens of millions of dollars on renovations and they overlook adding bathrooms in the grandstands! You know you just try to make a comrade, because he was going to be a buddy of mine. I just couldn't wait, couldn't wait for those last 25 laps. It was going to be a riot. Not much happing until two to go and then watch out. The restromms at this track must not have been updated since the place opened in 1959. The lines were way too long and the smell too bad. We waited two and a half hours to get on one of the busses to get back to the parking lot only to find that when we got there the gates were lock and we had to drive thru a ditch to get our car out. Next time park in one of the pay lots, It's better than the Daytona free parking. 24. That little punk Jimmie Johnson blocked Tony from getting to the front during the GWC so his buddy Jeff could win the race with ease. 31. And he even said that, saying "There will be plenty of more 500s for me to get that elusive win." That's a loser attitude. At the season opener Harvick ran a special car honoring Goodwrench's past paint schemes that started out white at the front (like his 2001 car), turned silver in middle (like his later cars to this point), and was black at the back (like Dale Earnhardt, Sr.'s paint job). Goodwrench gave some thought to bringing this paint job back as the #29 Chevy's regular scheme in 2006 but it lost a fan vote to having Harvick continue to run a more modern paint scheme like he did at most races in 2005. 47. They went to work on this car months prior to the season for the specific purpose of winning this race, and boy did he win. "Three baby!" I also noticed for some reason the decklid on this car is all red as opposed to the blue that was normally on his flame scheme. It just looked weird to me, as I think the blue is better. But he won the race, so I guess it doesn't matter. Darrell Waltrip when Earnhardt makes the pass for the lead: "What a pass! Way to go Junebug!" He also gave Robbie Loomis his first and only Daytona 500 win as a crew chief in this race. This car was a brand new car that they had been working on in the offseason to win this race. After the spring Talladega race the year prior, Gordon was a force on the restrictor plate tracks, using this car and his Pepsi cars to win at Daytona and Talladega. After the win, Jeff dedicated it to the family and team members of Hendrick Motorsports who perished in the Martinsville plane crash the year before. This race ran late because of a green-white-checker finish, and because of that it ended at dusk just as the sun was going down. It was such a cool sight to see Gordon bring it home as the day started to transition into night. Pretty memorable. 58. They were so preoccupied with Kahne being in the wall, they missed Gordon making the pass after cheering wildly for Junior the lap before. Watching this made me miss the days of Bob Jenkins, Ken Squier, Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker, Ned Jarrett, Allen Bestwick and Wally Dallenbach when things were a bit more professional. Let the racing tell the story, with commentary thrown in to help broadcast the race/educate viewers. Ned Jarrett basically cheered his son for the last lap only after CBS told him to because they thought it would be memorable. After Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001, everybody went into Earnhardt fanboy mode, the most obvious of which being Darrell Waltrip. Almost every race broadcast by Fox for the better part of 2001-2006 featured Darrell Waltrip cheering/pulling for both Dale Jr. AND Michael Waltrip, ESPECIALLY at Daytona and Talladega I can count about 5-6 times when either Jeff Gordon or anybody else for that matter was having a better race than Jr and Michael Waltrip, Mike Joy would ask if anybody could beat/win the race against the DEI cars and every time Darrell would say: "Nope." "No they can't." "Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is just so good here." Nearly every time, Darrel was proven wrong. He had no idea whatsoever what he was talking about. And in this case here, it ruined a great finish, whereas I feel that somebody like Ken Squier would have described the pass Jr. made and then made the final call on Gordon's pass with much more professionalism and respect. The early 00s, at least on the Fox end, was the Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr. show, and boy did it get old really quick. Even today, in 2017 and for the past 10 years we get to hear how this is Jr's year and he's going to win the championship, and it never happens. 63. Unfortunately it turned out to be a glaring outlier, as the team struggled through the rest of the mid 2000s to even qualify for races. At least they had these Speedweeks, though. That comment by Kurt Busch about having more opportunities almost came back to bite him. He ended up winning the 2017 Daytona 500, albeit assisted by a bit of fuel mileage luck, twelve years after this one, ending the long drought for both himself and CC at the time Tony Gibson. IIRC, and correct me if I'm wrong, but around this time I believe was when NASCAR started experimenting with later start times, and this one started closer to 2pm if not right at it, which led to the dusk-lit finish. 70. Also IIRC that team actually was split off of Morgan Shepard 71. NASCAR on Fox was produced in 720p, while NASCAR on NBC/TNT was produced in 1080i. All of the races in 2005 & 2006 were televised in 16:9 HD. Unfortunately as of today, there is not a single NASCAR race from 2005 in widescreen mode on YouTube. The only existing 2005 NASCAR HD race on YouTube is the Fontana race that Kyle Busch won. Except that race is in 4:3. There are, however, three 2006 NASCAR Cup races on YouTube that you can watch in 16:9 HD (Sonoma, Kansas, & the October Talladega race). There's also a NASCAR Busch Series race on YouTube that's from 2006 & there is a 16:9 version of the Michigan race that Dale, Jr. won. Problem is: It's not in good quality. 75. Donlavey's best 500 finishes were three fifths from Dick Brooks, and Brooks also led 15 laps in the 1983 running. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
