'Spose I should give one to Brian Simo too...don't have that much of a clue who he is and he gets a top 10 spot. These road course races are fun; why can't we have more of them in Cup? 4. Matt posted: 06.27.2005 - 3:55 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Tough breaks for Robby Gordon and Jeff Gordon, two guys who had cars that could have challenged Stewart but both had transmission problems. Atta-boy to Rudd, Simo, and Fellows who came from the back and overcame a few spins not of his making and the loss of power steering in the last 10 laps to finish 8th. 5. Shame with Jr. Thought he actually had a chance at a good run. 6. Don Hintz posted: 06.28.2005 - 10:41 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jeff Gordon couldn't have won the race hands down, because he broke a transmission! Remember a few years ago when the 24 team was testing at Talladega? Bobby Hillin, Jr. was in the seat and turned the fastest lap time. It has a lot to do with the car and the gray areas of the rule book. I'm sure if Tony was in Jeff's car, and Jeff in Tony's car, then maybe Jeff would had finished higher, but I doubt he'd of pulled off the win with one hand. I'm sure if every driver had the same resources and equipment that Gordon has, he'd be running up front all the time too. Don't take anything away from Stewart, or Rudd for that matter. Just because it's a road course isn't an automatic for Gordon anymore. These guys are the best of the best and the breaks just aren't going Jeff's way anymore. As good as Gordon is, it's raised the bar as well as the challenge for other teams and drivers, and it looks like now the advantage is going to the other guys for now. 7. He would've won this race hands down. Of course this is assuming his transmission didn't break, duh! Yes, at road courses Stewart does always stand a good chance, but Gordon would've won just LOOK! Staretd on pole, took off to a lead, no one was catching him, please. 9. Brock Beard posted: 08.30.2008 - 6:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Even though it was largely dependant on fuel mileage, it was nothing short of miraculous that Dale Jarrett got that top 5 in this race. The right side of his car was heavily damaged from a few on-track incidents, one of them when he banged doors with Jimmie Johnson late in the race. Kasey Kahne had a frightening moment late in the race when his throttle hung going down The Chute into turn 7. Fortunately, he caught the already-damaged nose of Brian Vickers going into turn 7 and spun himself out, slowing his car dramatically before it backed into the tire barrier. Unfortunately, both he and Vickers sustained significant damage. Carl Edwards sustained some significant damage to the front of his car in a strange incident in turn 11. When P.J. Jones spun the #4 in turn 11, Edwards slowed down, but was drilled into the back of Jones by Brian Simo, lifting the back of Jones' car onto the hood of Edwards. Jones spun his tires to get off Edwards, damaging Edwards' car even more. Despite crunching his own front end in the wreck, Brian Simo still scored the aforementioned top 10. Also, Ricky Rudd was so close on fuel in this race that his car stalled off turn three on the cool-down lap. Had that final debris caution not come out in the final 10 laps, it is unlikely he would have made it to the finish. 22. Jarrett also notably has a cameo in the movie. Maybe the paint scheme helped, Herbie ran well at Riverside during scenes filmed for his first and third cinematic outings. 34. That would have made it two in a row at Sonoma, after he completely dominated the entire weekend during the 2004 event. And it would have been 3 in a row, because he won the 2006 race here the next year. He also should have won the 2003 race at Watkins Glen, but he got punted before they even completed the first corner on the first lap by Greg Biffle ,and then was run over from behind by Kevin Harvick at the end of the race. Yes, he was out of gas, but he was out of the way and Harvick EASILY had room to pass him, but instead decided to be a an asshole and knock him out of the way. He also should have won the 2007 race at Watkins Glen, but he wheel hopped it going into the corner, gift-wrapping the win for Tony Stewart. So you could make the argument that he should AT LEAST have 12 road course wins. Unquestionably, the greatest road racer in NASCAR, and Sonoma was his own personal playground. He was excellent at Watkins Glen as well, although he had bad luck and mechanical failures that plagued good runs after 2001. Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon, while good road course racers in their own right, benefitted a lot from Gordon's misfortunes, be it part failures or being taken out by other competitors. The only driver in NASCAR history to win 6 consecutive road course race, and probably will be the last. 3 straight wins at Sonoma, a record. 3 straight wins at Watkins Glen, a record. 35.
