Still, congrats Tony, especially since he's been a class act, and thank you to Rusty & Ricky, who are truly legends in the sport. They will be missed dearly. RIP to those killed in the helicopter crash at Homestead last night. 5. Chevy posted: 11.21.2005 - 2:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roush 1-2-3-4. Ouch. I won't deny there was any debris on the race track. The problem was, the debris was on the access lane to pit road. 10. Don posted: 11.27.2005 - 3:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) In the first place, Busch fired himself, when he jumped ship from Roush and signed with Penske. This ought to open the eyes of you people who think Jack Roush or Rick Hendrick run the show. The sponsors decide who is in the car. What Busch did was downright stupid. But there are many police officers out there with a not much between their ears. My first car was a 1978 Pontiac Astre, with a four cylindar engine and snow tires on it. And my neighborhood state patrol officer came and talked to me about complaints he was getting about a red car squealing tires. A four cylindar car, automatic transmission with snow tires squealing tires? I think even Roscoe could have figured that one out. As for Mears crying and whining about NASCAR giving another one to Roush, how come we never heard these kind of crys when Gordon was winning 30% of the races, when he had a 15th place car and won the race. Has more to do with NASCAR turning their chicken little head and coughing. Besides that, Edwards lead the most laps in the race, he wasn't crying and whining like Mears. Maybe Casey ought to look at his stats driving for his "owner" and read the writing on the wall. This is Edwards first full season and Casey has been doing this how long? Lets see who's ride remains secure through this time next year, Carl or Casey. The thing I find the most odd about the season, NASCAR champ by 215 points; (35 with the chase) Busch champ 68 points; truck champ 55 points. And every website out there shows the points in the "classic" standings. The best part of this years Chase was Gordon and Jr. not being in it. 14. The fact that this was Rudd's last race didn't get much attention, but that's exactly the way he wanted it. He said that when he retired, he wouldn't have a Victory Tour or a Farewell Tour or do anything special, just whenever he felt he was no longer competitive. He had a good chance to win at Atlanta in March (brakes failed), Infineon (Stewart passed him late in the race), at Charlotte in October (dropped off the pace while running in the Top 5, and the next week at Martinsville (crashed with Mike Bliss and Sterling Marlin while running 2nd), so Rudd can still get the job done. 788 consecutive starts. Maybe, and I emphasize, MAYBE Kyle Busch or Reed Sorenson could break that record. Good to hear that Rusty will be in the ESPN booth in 2007. It won't take him long to feel right at home. 20. I thought we all went through that. As if a driver were to have a device rigged to puncture a right front going into Turn 1 at Pocono, or having a team member disguised as a fan with accurate enough aim to get a hot dog wrapper on a grill. They have a kill switch on the steering wheel, why not one to grenade the engine in mid pack at Talladega? I question some officiating, but usually, on further review, they are right. I stopped watching stick and ball sports because the officiating stinks and timeouts are ruled by commercials. 26. It changed to number 26 with Jamie McMurray, to possibly get rid of the ugly Kurt Busch mess. * Kurt Busch's first season since 2001 where he did not run all the races. * As of 2011, Besides Jimmie Johnson's 5 time effort, Kurt Busch and this year's winner and Tony Stewart will be the only ones with a title under the Chase system. * The final ride for Michael Waltrip in the NAPA Chevrolet capping of a season which was a disaster from start to finish, Waltrip led the league in wrecked racecars. * Denny Hamlin becomes the fulltime driver of the 11 car after this race for next year, he goes into the next season already with a pole at Phoenix under his belt. * Possibly the last Cup start for Jimmy Spencer and he would soon take up announcing duties as SPEED channel fulltime. * The last race for Cal Well's 32 team and Tide the official sponsor has sponsored a car since the early 1980's with Darrell Waltrip any of the remaining assets of the team are put into Michael Waltrip's new team which Wells owns a stake in. Michael Waltrip signs will Bill Davis so he can race while his team is being built. * Rusty's last call ends with a Chase berth and a winless season, Rusty is replaced by Kurt Busch who does not run the final race. * This is also another race where the torch is passed, veterans Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliott two years before, and Terry Labonte the year before retire from fulltime driving, that is four championships between them and a lot of hardware to go with it. * Another torch is passed when Stewart wins this title he proves his role as Joe Gibbs's top dog, Bobby Labonte the 2000 champion runs his last race in the 18 and the ride is given to JJ Yeley the next year. * Last race for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo used from 2003-05, the new version is revamped with new headlights and new nose and flatter tail section and was used in the Nationwide series through 2010 and was christened the Monte Carlo SS, the tooling was used in Cup through 2007 and discontinued in 2008. * Last race for the 2K Ford Taurus introduced in 2000, the new Ford Fusion would debut the next year, with a flatter body style and wider look than the Ford Taurus used from 2000-2005. * Greg Biffle's win was the final for the Ford Taurus, the first was Dale Jarrett in the 2000 Daytona 500. * Sterling Marlin's last race with Chip Ganassi as they would part ways, and replace Sterling with David Stremme. Marlin would get close as he ever get to the title with Ganassi before he injured his neck at Kansas in 2002. He led the points in 2002 for 20 straight weeks. Sterling never could recover and never won again. He'd drive for Ginn Racing in 2006 with his father's #14. 45. 1995z71 posted: 11.20.2011 - 9:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dont know if anyone mentioned it before but Kyle Petty & Scott Riggs had special paint schemes featuring UF & FSU. 46. He may have won the most races (Biffle's 6 to Stewarts's 5) but he was nowhere as consistant as Smoke was, so Tony deserved the title. It was either the beginning or the total end of these era's: -Nascar on NBC. It was announced sometime before or after the race that ESPN would take over the series at Indy and show the chase, while TNT did a few races every season. NBC's coverage was unpopular at the time, but has gained sone respect and a following since loosing the rights in 2006. -The Last Call has passed. He lost it and pancaked the driver's side HARD. After the crash, his car simply rolled eerily down the banking until gravity took it no further. There was not a conscious driver inside to apply the brakes. Similar to Dale Jr's concussion at Dover in 2003 when his car simply rolled down the banking. 77.
