He was decently fast all week and worked hard. Nice job Casey Mears also. Hopefully this ride will be the boost he needs to get a win. 5. Hopefully the independents will get a little more respect after his run. Hall of Fame Racing does well in its debut with a seventeenth place finish. I think that is a very promising orginization. Finally, congrats to Jimmie Johnson, who proves all the naysayers wrong. He has always been a talented driver in every sport he's run, and it's about time more people realize that. 6. JG24 posted: 02.20.2006 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) Same old Stewart. Tried to take 4 cars out and says it's the other guys fault. How could anyone be a Stewart fan after that performance?? Talking about worrying about getting killed out there and by the grace of God, Kenseth is not killed. Stewart is a real man saying "He started it and I finished it!" The real conspiracy is that Stewart was not penalized a lap or two for rough driving. 7. Ost posted: 02.20.2006 - 8:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I enjoyed the race, lots of lead changes and exciting actual racing action for a change. I think it's unfair to pin the blame for every incident Tony Stewart was involved in on him. Some were his fault, some weren't and some were both drivers fault. He did take Kenseth out in a stupid move though. He just seemed to be very nervy out there. And those poor Petty guys cannot get a break. Talk about bad luck. 8. I have no clue what he was doing out there. I hate to say it, but I have to give credit when it's due, congrats to Johnson..there's no denying that he earned this win. Looking at these drivers...Bowyer, Truex Jr, Sorenson, Yeley...this is going to be another hell of a year. 9. And it is obviously Gordon's fault for driving up into Stewart when he had plenty of room. The Kyle Busch fued was because Busch was trying to make Stewart go under the line. Just because I don't agree with you I'm a loser? Hahahaha!! I already got a life, buddy. Maybe YOU should try finding one instead of insulting a certain NASCAR driver because Gordo doesn't like them. You probably don't know a thing about NASCAR you little ass kisser. Everyone only bashes Stewart cause they're jealous of him stealing their favorite driver's glory. Again you have shown your ignorance and jealousy of the average Gordo fan, and I laugh at your pathetic self. 14. Thomas posted: 02.22.2006 - 4:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) What a pitiful piece of crap this thing was. Terrible weather, atrocious driving, and officiating about as reprehensible as The Third Reich. First, Tony Stewart totally loses his mind when he hits Matt Kenseth, then NASCAR goes blind when they only put him at the back of the field instead of putting him several laps down. They keep their blindness when they put Matt Kenseth to the back of the pack for "aggressive driving". His penalty turned out to be worse, since it was under green while Stewart's was under caution, and Matt was the victim for Christ's sake! They fail to penalize Jeff Gordon when he wrecked Stewart earlier or Brian Vickers when he wrecked Martin Truex, or even Jimmie Johnson when he hit and forced Kurt Busch below the yellow line with about 20 to go (Oh wait, I forgot, those three are all Hendrick drivers, so the rules don't apply to them, my mistake! A thousand apologies!) Anyway, it was digusting to see Casey Mears stab Ryan Newman in the back in turn three on the last lap when he promised to help Newman pass Jackass Johnson. Mears only hurt himself when he didn't follow Newman because he could've gotten hung out and finished 5th or 6th with no chance to win. If he just drafted with Newman, Mears could've won the damn thing and had the first ever 1-2 finish for the new Dodge Charger in Nextel Cup. Oh well, that finish would have made too much sense on this day, (and Speedweeks) filled with nonsense, finishes under caution, hypocrisy, and political correctness. We'll go real racing (as Mark Martin so eloquently puts it) next week at Fontana. God bless! On a positive note, it was nice to see Kirk Shelmerdine, Kevin Lepage, and Mike Wallace qualify and finish in the top 25. It was also good to see Brent Sherman, Dave Blaney, Terry Labonte, and Bill Elliott run well and for Clint Bowyer and Ken Schrader to finish in the top 10. By the way, no points penalty, but only a $25,000 fine and a three race suspension for Cheater Knaus that will be overturned when $Rich Hendrick bitches to that corrupt, unstable NASCAR appeal board for sympathy? NASCAR treats teams equal my ass. 15. For all the whining about NASCAR playing favorites with Hendrick, everyone conveniently forgets about how they came up with about a dozen rule changes for Roush and Ford a few years ago. 18. Darrell posted: 02.22.2006 - 6:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, now that I look back on it. Knaus' punishment was probably too light considering how he seems to get in trouble a lot. So, when it happens don't come to this board crying like a girl. Also, it seems you need a refresher. I complained about Kenseth almost getting killed with his car turned facing on coming cars. They both got quarters-of-an-inch off their rear spoilers before the 500. But the fact of the matter is that GM has complained to NASCAR more times and won more times over NASCAR's history. I'm convinced the favoritism stems from the fact that Bill France, Sr. was an exec at General Motors before he called the historical meeting at the Streamline Hotel. 27. mk17ce99 posted: 03.05.2006 - 2:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gibbs Inc, you're an idiot! He won the race, only after taking Kurt Busch out of a Top 5 position (I believe 3rd). I don't think he would have won unless he did that. I also just watched the 2003 spring race at Dover when he punted Sterling Marlin in Turn 2. Or what about Watkins Glen the same year when he ran out of fuel on the last lap, and stayed in the racing groove? Kevin Harvick had no idea what the hell Jeff was doing. That's the word from a top NASCAR crew chief, who asked not to be named, and it was confirmed by a top car owner, who likewise asked not to be named. "When they did the chassis-dyno tests on the Daytona engines, they found that a number of teams had made huge gains in horsepower, from 18 to 25 more horsepower over the last chassis dyno tests of restrictor-plate engines," the crew chief said. "You couldn't pick up that much horsepower with a restrictor-plate engine if you worked for seven years on it. And those teams picked up that much in just one year? It's because they were sucking air. You wouldn't believe how many teams at Daytona were sucking air." NASCAR rules are strict about sucking air - getting extra air into the engine cylinders by bypassing the restrictor plates that are designed to limit horsepower by choking down the air - and the penalties can be stiff. However no penalties were levied at Daytona. One key trick apparently was semi-legal - using a steel gasket instead of an aluminum gasket, and taking advantage of the gap of 10-thousandths-of-an-inch created when engine heat distorts the steel gasket. NASCAR officials realized they had a problem when they discovered that some of Daytona's fastest qualifiers were using engines that couldn't pass NASCAR's post-qualifying manifold leak tests. NASCAR officials were unable to confirm the legality of front-row qualifiers Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon until six hours after qualifying had ended. In response, NASCAR quietly changed some of its rules for Talladega, and some teams that had qualified very fast at Daytona were noticeably slower.(Winston Salem Journal)(5-22-2006) 66. This race's poll question was, "Which driver will benefit the most from his new team in 2006?" A-- Kurt Busch [#2] (15%) (1 win, 6 poles, 7 top 5s, 12 top 10s) B-- Jamie McMurray [#26] (35%) (0 wins, 0 poles, 3 top 5s, 7 top 10s) C-- Bobby Labonte [#43] (35%) (0 wins, 0 poles, 3 top 5s, 8 top 10s) D-- Michael Waltrip [#55] (15%) (no wins, poles, top 5s, or top 10s) 78. That's about 1 in every 11 Americans. 81. The fog was insane. Stewart was driving like a man posessed. 10 cautions. Maybe just because it ended under caution, but outside of that I can't think of why other than the Winter Olympics. I suggest watching this race, as it's definitely interesting 82. ShinyMew151 posted: 04.24.2020 - 3:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Probably was forgotten because of the winner 83. Not only was it the best finish among that group of drivers, it was the only top-30 finish for a first-time competitor in 2006. I don't think even the chaotic nature of plate racing can explain away this one. Truly some weird times here. 85. Add that on to the fact that drivers making their first starts usually are driving part-time before their rookie season, and you get this result. The ROTY candidates in 2006 - Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex, Jr., Reed Sorenson, J.J. Yeley, David Stremme & Sherman - certainly put some good runs together at points during the 2006 season, most notably Hamlin's incredible 2-win performance on his way to 3rd in the points. Those 7 drivers had a combined 29 starts prior to 2006 (average of 4 per driver) however. But it's a lot easier to look at rookie seasons rather than actual debut races to judge performance of drivers who are starting out. Most drivers don't have great debuts. 86. rm posted: 07.07.2020 - 9:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 4 crew chief - Chris Carrier 10 crew chief - Rodney Childers 15 crew chief - Dan Stillman 23 crew chief - Ricky Viers 37 crew chief - Mark Tutor 50 crew chief - Buddy Sisco 52 crew chief - Dan Kolanda 59 crew chief - Barry Owen 64 crew chief - Wayne Hatfield 74 crew chief - Dom Turse 78 crew chief - Joe Garone 80 crew chief - Stan Hover 89 crew chief - Doug George 92 crew chief - Mike Steurer 95 crew chief - Mike Dayton 87. They tumbled from 9th in points after the 500 to 31st by the end of the year, and Ken Schrader was demoted to part-time status for 2007. 90. In response too this, NASCAR ejected Knaus from the 500 and later suspended him for the first 5 races of the season as well as a $25000 fine but no points penalty for Johnson. Lead engineer for Hendrick Darian Grubb would take over as Johnson's crew chief and this would become his first win as a crew chief. Grubb would later win more races as a crew chief for drivers such as Casey Mears, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and of course Tony Stewart who he took to the 2011 championship. 92. In the 10 races Knaus missed, Johnson had 2 wins, 6 top 5s, 8 top 10s & 119 laps led. Grubb substituted for Knaus during the 4 races he was suspended in '06, while Ron Malec substituted for the 6-race stretch in 2007. Unlike Grubb, Malec never got a chance to crew chief again in the Cup Series. 93. A crowd of 37 million people tuned in to watch this race on NBC, with the event bolstered by the channel's ongoing sports coverage of the Torino Winter Olympics, and watched Jimmie Johnson win his first Daytona 500 to start his path toward his inaugural champion. That's essentially one out of every 10 American households. With changing trends overall toward television and sports viewership, with many now streaming their sports online, that mark may stand forever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
