However, Greg seemed to have the best car today. 2. Stewart fought through an off-sequence pit schedule but his engine, too, went, becoming the first retirement from the race. This must be the first race in a while that saw no torn up sheet metal. Scott Wimmer also lost a motor, Kenny Wallace's throttle linkage gave out, and Michael Waltrip's car had plug issues from the drop of the green (literally) that were eventually corrected, but besides Stanton Barrett's single car spin up in three and Kurt Busch being tagged by J.J. Yeley ... clean race. I am going to give my two cents on this race; I'm tired of sitting through two and a half hours of a single file spread out parade to see ten balls to the walls all out laps at the end which leaves people talking at the water coolers. Fontana is no Michigan clone, not even close, but a lot of that, I think, stems from a rule package that doesn't allow cars to stay in drafting packs of four or five and break out and pass. Earnhardt, Jr. did a lot with a little en route to a quite respectable eleventh place finish which leaves him up in the points standings, and Newman had a rather docile weekend struggling to get the handle of his *Intrepid* down; Jeff Burton showed renewed life, and Jeff Gordon had battery problems and a decision not to pit on the green white checkered left him far back in the pack. Casey Mears has shown that Ganassi's faith in him was not misplaced and Jimmie Johnson's success has not been that surprising. All things said, congratulations to Matt Kenseth on an outstanding victory and hopefully this will silence the "robot" critics. 3. I'll say it again, I think this year will have one tough rookie battle. I expect Sorenson to do well, and I, hope, Casey Mears will finally breakout. 4. The Track employees were really rude and the benches we sat on hurt our asses. I was like "we bought 4 tickets for this?!" I agree, NASCAR needs to replace California Speedway. It will never be as good as Riverside. 13. Mr. Etc posted: 03.08.2006 - 4:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bring back Rockingham. 14. Jeff posted: 06.21.2006 - 8:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well this was 12th Cup race I've been to and this was the 1st repeat winner that I'd ever seen. I also saw Matt win at Vegas in 2003. This was probably the worst of the 8 races I've seen at Cali Speedway and I'm really not sure why it sucked so bad. Perhaps it was Biffle having a dominant car and Stewart not to far behind with the 2nd best car. And they finished 42nd and 43rd. Yikes. But even if the racing isn't great up near the front; it's usually good somewhere on the track, but not really so with this race. I will again be at the "night" race in September and I hope it's better than this one was. I never wanted to see the Rock off the schedule; that's for sure, but I can't say I am annoyed with Cali having 2 races. Though to be honest; I think there are some tracks that need to go to 1 race(Cali is one) and add some other tracks to the Cup fold. Kentucky, Nashville and the Rock back would be nice. Certain tracks need to still have 2 races, but there's no reason we can't add these 3 tracks and maybe even some more. Even North Wilkesboro back for just 1 race a year would be great. Though I admit that I wasn't big into NASCAR when they last raced there in 1996. The track president(Gillian Zucker) at Cali was saying that not everyone at the race was there for the "racing". Well excuse me Mrs or Ms Zucker, but that's the only reason I am at a race track. For the RACING and if the racing sucks I will probably go to a track that offers better racing. She did say that they might explore re-banking the track. Good idear I'd say and I think making it progressive banking like Homestead, but at a lower level due to it being a 2 mile track compared to Homestead's 1 1/2 miles. Maybe make t 21. I've seen some 41's and 40's scattered around, but I can't remember another 42nd like this one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
