Vickers looked to me like he caused the big wreck on lap 9 by attempting to go five-wide in turn 3 (genius, or what?). Johnson's annoying as hell. One reason why I don't like him (there are many) is because he only won at Talladega today because after four years of prior NEXTEL Cup restrictor plate racing, he, self-admittedly, finally learned how to drive in one. In the last two Talladega races, he caused 3 big wrecks. And I don't remember totally, but I'm pretty sure he caused some before that, and some at Daytona as well, though I could be completely wrong about that. 8. Don posted: 05.02.2006 - 5:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My hope for this race was that we'd actually see a good plate race, for a change. Being that I didn't see the whole race yet, the finish was pretty spectacular. Although I would have rather seen someone besides Johnson win, I was quite happy that the race was settled on the track for a change, instead of in the pits, and most definitely not a green white checkered! My hope for this site is that we could intelligently discuss racing and not act like a bunch foul mouthed snots who rant and rave because their favorite driver did or didn't win. So since this has turned into such a great bastion of race discussion, here is something to ponder. (My rant) Good for Jimmie, so he's won three times this year. But instead of acting like he's won the championship look back at who won the Daytona 500 last year, who won Martinsville spring race and Talladega spring race. And, look where that driver finished in the points. We've had nine races. Jimmie has lead in 4 of them for a total of 223 laps out of 2870 laps run. 7%. In his three "dominating" performances winning a race, he's led a total of 28 laps. I think he had something to prove at Daytona. None the less, the win is ôtaintedö. LV, well, they made the right call, and although leading the last lap is the most important lap, if it was my favorite driver(s) IÆd say the same thing. He stole it. Talladega, well, 3 laps out of 188 doesnÆt really impress me that much. He ran up front most of the day, which is impressive. The finish was pretty incredible. To me, it was kind of like the Doug Flutie Hale Mary of a few years ago. There were probably 15-20 cars that ôcould haveö won this race, by have ever so slightly of a lead at the finish line. That could be debated for ever. But who ever had the slightest lead advantage, gets the win and is the hero. Start with the what ifÆs. Look back at the tape. Where was Johnson with two laps to go. What if we would have had a G/W/C? What if, what if, what if. He got the best push at the right time and gets credit for the win, whoopee! Like I said at the beginning, I was happy to see the race decided on the track. The way it finished is the way it finished. In the grand scheme of 36 races, does it really mean that much? If Johnson wins the championship, means a lot. Johnson doesnÆt win the championship, not so much. But I long so much for ôRacingö at Daytona and Talladega. All they have become lately is who can make their rear bumper/fender the widest by blocking. Come on guys, race! In closing, IÆd like to comment on the whole Michael Waltrip/Morgan Shepherd issue of last week. Who ever it was that was complaining about Morgan shouldnÆt even attempt to qualify for races. Well, I say Morgan will probably quit attempting races when that writer quits writing ridiculous statements like that. So what if he finishes 38th every week. Take a look at 38th place in the first 8 races. The 38th place finisher has won a total of $801,501. On average that is about $100, 187 per race. Average that out for an entire 36 race season and IÆd take 3.6 million any time someone was willing to put up sponsorship money to put me on the track. (My rave) IÆm sure that if you would sit down and have a conversation with Morgan, youÆd find out just what kind of integrity this man has. Morgan does love racing. He has a crew chief and he has a crew and IÆm sure there is somebody that pushes a broom in his race shop. Some kid who is aspiring to get into racing. He may be providing an opportunity for somebody somewhere along the line that may turn out to be a great crew chief. Point is he has the opportunity. He pays his entrance fee for the races and heÆs got a car on the track. Although he only has four wins to his credit, he is in an elite group of racers who have won a race. There have been roughly 2,843 drivers to suit up and take the green flag. Of those, only 168 have won at least one race. About 5.9 %. Earnhardt Senior recognized something in Michael Waltrip to put him in one of his cars. MichaelÆs first race with DEI was a huge success. But where did he finish in the points that year? 24th. What if Michael had listened to all the nay-sayers about him, he probably wouldnÆt have ever have been in a position for Earnhardt to call him. It took Michael 462 races in 16 seasons to win his first race. Morgan won his first race in only his 17th race, in his first full season. They each have 4 race wins. And how many commercials did you see Michael in before DEI? Final point. I dare say that if you were to put Morgan in WaltripÆs DEI car, and Waltrip in MorganÆs cars, or better yet, put Morgan in GordonÆs car, or Mark MartinÆs car or Dale JarrettÆs car and put any of those drivers in MorganÆs cars (without the help of any information exchange) I donÆt think Michael would be so bold to be putting ANYBODYÆs qualifying ability in question. (I guess in a sense, we sort of already experienced that, because Morgan used to drive for the Wood Brothers and in 1994, he won a race in the 21 car at Atlanta. Michael, on the other hand, only won the All Star Race in the 21 car.) 15. Don Hintz posted: 05.02.2006 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One more thing about the 21 car. Michael got out of the 21 at the end of 1998. That one guy, Elliott Sadler won in the 21 car at Bristol, starting from the 38th position mind you so you can't say that the Wood Brothers weren't putting good equipment under either Waltrip or Sadler. 16. I was wrong. I would gladly perform poorly for that kind of money. The 43rd place finisher in a race makes more for his team than the average American citizen makes in a year. If one is good enough to just make the race each week, regardless of finish, they will be wealthier than most people in America. I can't blame Morgan one iota for attempting to qualify for Nextel cup races. 18. Fenway posted: 10.02.2006 - 3:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) About the Wood Brothers and Elliott Sadler ... Sadler came to the Wood Brothers full of promise. There was a lot of talk about Waltrip dragging the effort down. In 1999, he finished 24th in points. In 2000, he didn't qualify at Talladega and finished 29th in points. Those two seasons total, he had 2 top-ten's. Didn't come close to a top-five. Then 2001. He won Bristol on a tire gamble, did nothing until July where he finished third in that year's emotional Firecracker 400, and disappeared again. 2001 total -- 2 top-ten's. 20th in points. The Wood Brothers have been on a major slide since the early '90's, and it's hard to say that Michael Waltrip and Elliott Sadler, and then Ricky Rudd who took over from there, can't get the job done. The Wood Brothers haven't won an official race on outright speed since before 1985, save for Waltrip's Winston upset. It's probably accurate to say, although dissapointing, that the times have simply passed them by. 35. Thomas posted: 10.03.2006 - 9:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) By loser, I didn't mean loser in the sense of loser in racing results. I meant "loser" in the sense of personality and human character. Johnson, Gordon, and Harvick have bad personalities and character, in my opinion, and anyone has the right to disagree. By the way, that's funny Steve, mentioning Gordon's lack of consistency in his rookie season. Not sure how you can say I'm inconsistent, though. How ironic that I get slammed by someone who goes by my name in a casual form (Tommy). 36.
