Vickers gets into the back of Johnson and Junior, taking them, allowing Vickers to win his first Cup race. I don't think it was intentional on his part, but what gets my goat are those Junior fans who evidently haven't matured since 2004, based on their throwing bottles on other garbage on the track. Had Junior not been in that crash, Vickers would have gotten a hero's welcome in victory lane, since everyone hates Johnson. (Even though Johnson has more victories than Junior, in less starts no less!) He'd probably need a police escort if it was Junyer and a Roush driver. Great run for Jeff Green though. 2. Brian Vickers makes contact with teammate Jimmie Johnson, who makes contact with leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt Jr and Johnson both spin, and Vickers gets his first victory. Congratulations to Vickers. I've been waiting for him to get his first win for a while. I know he didn't want to win it this way, but that's a product of the close racing restrictor plates produce. The wildly pro-Earnhardt crowd expresses their displeasure with boos and beer cans. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if Earnhardt was the one taking out Johnson and Vickers. 4. In all I think and im sure that some people may agree that if there was no caution with a handful remaining then junior may have won because the racers were side by side at thre time. And to summarize my now hatred of Brian Vickers:if you watch South Park and heard the "Kyles Mom Is B**** in D-Minor" Then you know what i think of Brian. But chabnging Kyles Mom to Brian Vickers. And the only Positive thing that i have to say about it all is that junior ganed points and a position so he can still take the points lead after Lowes. 5. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone makes at least one or two dumb mistakes. Brian's made a few more than one or two but guys that have been racing 20 years make them too so I'm not gonna throw him under the bus. One thing I'm glad about him winning is his sponsor (GMAC) and his uniform. I'll always associate GMAC with him and Ricky Hendrick's run to the 2003 Busch title and him wearing that same uniform and sitting in victory lane with a GMAC car ws really nice to see. 7. The Ost posted: 10.09.2006 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Wow, great race. Interesting how the last two races have been made exciting partly due to the track surface - the worn surface at Kansas allowing side by side racing, and the paved surface at Talladega allowing the same thing due to it being smoother. Seeing Dale and Jimmie spinning at the end was a similar visual to the '79 Daytona 500. I thought Dale had the best car but as they always say "that's racing!" 8. Talladega Days posted: 10.09.2006 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Congratulations, you loser, Brian Vickers! It only took you three years to win a race and you did it by spinning out your own teammate and NASCAR's most popular driver! Congrats again to you! Your actions Sunday further proved that you have no business driving a Nextel Cup car! However, good luck next year since your Toyota's problem now! Red Bull must have a lot of money to waste on someone so special! If only Hollywood could have scripted an equally entertaining, yet ludicrous Talladega finish. Oh wait, I forgot, they did and it was called "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby." The only difference is that the foreign Formula One driver ran in a different Talladega race in real life. 9. Funny thing is, I just heard that South Park song last night a few hours after the race. I didn't think to make the connection to Brian Vickers, but it fits. Whenever I see South Park, I think of Kyle Busch because his pit sign is a cutout of the South Park character of Kyle. 10. I don't doubt that Dale has mature, but there is NEVER any excuse for throwing debris on any racetrack. NEVER. These guys' lives are already at risk, and that debris only increases somebody's chances of getting hurt, or dare I say it, killed. I can understand their being upset that their guy didn't win, but there are safer ways of venting their frustrations than that. 11. Don Hintz posted: 10.10.2006 - 4:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow! I don't know who I feel more sorry for Vickers or Jr. At least Jr. gets it and knows exactly what he said in his post race interview is the way it is. Also, Johnson got the target off his back about being the instigator of wrecks at Talladega. Isn't it ironic that Jr. gets blamed for being so aggressive and wreckless with his bump drafting, then gets taken out by being bumped. (NASCAR didn't see anything wrong with what Jr. was doing) Two weeks ago, I mentioned Jeff Gordon and it's said that I'm bashing Gordon. I made a comparison, much like I'm going to here. I'm not a Brian Vickers fan, but that doesn't mean that I'm a Vickers hater. I'm not a Johnson fan, but that doesn't mean I'm a Johnson hater. I'm not a Gordon fan, but that doesn't mean I'm a Gordon hater either. I watch the races and I make observatoins and I make comments; like I'm going to do here. Vickers screwed up. ROYALLY! Usually, when a driver screws up, (especially at Talladega) it ends up costing a lot of other drivers. (and owners and sponsors) This time, Vickers got lucky. At the risk of once again being called a Gordon hater, I'll make a comparison of Gordon tagging his teammate, in the 25 car non the less. The track was Talladega, the race was the Die Hard 500. Gordon wrecked Schrader and it was billed an accident. Jeff apoligized, Kenny walked around with a black eye for a week and all was well. Jeff won his championship and it was "a racing accident." Knaus said in a post race interview said that "I just don't think he (Vickers) has the talent to understand what he has underneath him." He certainly knew how to wheel that talent around in winning a Busch championship now, didn't he. I think Vickers completly understands what he has underneath him. I also think he finally understands just the the 25 car at HMS is. Vickers made a mistake. Two drivers got wrecked by the same mistake. Two totally different responses. I think Jr. should be the one honked off. At the risk of sounding like I'm bashing, it's Gordon that was the most vocal about the "bump drafting" and Johnson the most vocal about another driver making a mistake at a plate race track. Not to mention the fact that Johnson got into Edwards which caused the big one. Gordon was in 18th, Jr. in 27th or 28th and the replay clearly showed he didn't touch anyone before, during or after the crash. I'm not so sure it was the Jr. fans hurling their displeasure on the track. I think it was more the fans showing displeasure with HMS as a whole for once again, having to spin someone to win. I'm real glad this practice came back to bite HMS the way it did in this race. It's still a chump move by Vickers, but for once, a Hendrick driver spins another Hendrick driver. And now, its dubbed "not right". Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black. Keep smilin' Jimmie, next year's coming! 12. I mean really, they typically cover about 1/4 to 1/3 of the field, they constantly give wrong information, call drivers and tracks by the wrong name. And in my opinion have really stooped to new lows lately by trying to fuel a Jr./Gordon rivalry. Its no secret most Jr. fans hate Gordon (since he dethroned dale sr. in the mid 90s) and I guess the genius's at NBC have figured this out. I so enjoyed how they fed like a pack of wild wolves on Gordon's comments about JR and bump drafting. I mean making a big deal of it to Jr. was one thing, asking other drivers repeadetly about "Jeff Gordon" comments is another. and MY GOD can there be anymore commercials during a race. No wonder ratings are down for every race but 2 this year. You know NASCAR isnt a sport the way football/basketball/baseball is. It's really more about entertainment than anything else. and basically its not near as entertaining as it use to be, espically on TV. At one point WCW(World Championship Wrestling) was the highest rated thing on TV and a Billion dollar company, then they dwindled to nothing trying to get too greedy and having too many bad ideas. This sounds similar to NASCAR to me and I believe their fate may be the same. REGARDLESS of what anyone says this sport as not as pumped today as it was during the late 90's and early 00's, so when will the decline stop?? 13. DJ posted: 10.10.2006 - 10:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow!!!! Can anyone just sit back and think before they speak? What happened was a "Racin' Deal" no more and no less. In a sport of inches and a mistake was made. It happens, Vickers was off by a fraction of an inch, and wrecked two cars, oh well. It really sucks that a last lap mistake overshadows what was the most competative race of the season. I loved the whole commercal riddled event. I wish some races would be broadcasted on Pay Per View, just so i can watch a damn race. I can't wait till next year, when a real sports network will air the cup series. This was a great race, i really wish i was there so i could enjoy the side by side action, that we as race fans miss during the rest of the season. With my last thought i'll leave you with a quote that should explain why this Earnhardt fan, by the way a fan of Sr, is not angry at Vickers. To quote Harry Hogge from "Days of Thunder", "Rubbin' is Racin'!". P.S. We should all thank Vickers for tighting up the points race. It will be a fun final 6 races in the chase. 14. underdogfan posted: 10.10.2006 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Congratulations to Brian Vickers on his first career win. My message to him would be this: Don't pay any attention to all the Dale Jr. fans who are getting their knickers in a twist over what you did. Any driver in their right mind would wreck another driver to win a race, and if they say they wouldn't they're lying. I don't know if Brian Vickers caused that crash intentionally or not, but it does not matter. Either way, there was no harm done. And Dale Jr. fans are the LAST ones to complain, as it was the late great Dale Sr. who wrecked Terry Labonte to win at Bristol. In short, GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!! 15. Steve posted: 10.11.2006 - 3:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brian Vickers made a mistake. He went to follow Jimmie Johnson to push him past Dale Jr., but I think he got a slight draft from Junior's car before he went to follow Johnson, and he tagged him in the right rear, triggering the wreck. He was very apologetic in Victory Lane, as he should have been. But along with this incident (an accident in my opinion) and his exclusion from Hendrick Motorsports team meetings (which shows that Brian is no longer welcome at Hendrick), I wouldn't be surprised if Brian is taken out of the #25 car before the end of the year. Red Bull Racing may need to enter the rest of the races so Vickers has a ride. Now, some positive and uncontroversial surprises from this race: rookie David Gilliland's first Bud Pole and first Top 15 in Nextel Cup Jeff Green's first Top 10 since Martinsville in 2004 (70 races) Kasey Kahne's first ever Top 10 in a restrictor plate race (2nd) one of Jamie McMurray's best runs since his runner-up at Dover Paul Menard's first Nextel Cup lap led Martin Truex Jr's first Top 5 in Nextel Cup Mike Wallace's best Cup finish in over a year Michael Waltrip's first Top 15 since Atlanta last fall 16. And as far as the Labonte and Bristol comment, that is not a fair statement, because although I was a Dale fan before Jr,not every Jr fan was, just remember that. 17. I understand this is a dangerous sport and wrecks can hurt drivers, but put yourself in the position of a driver. If you had a good chance at a win, don't tell me you wouldn't do anything possible to win it. This was a racing accident, and if I remember the constant replays I saw right, it was as much Johnson's fault as Vickers. At least one replay I saw showed Jimmie actually come down the track a little, maybe to get in line with Brian and make their move. Gordons worst finish in RP was 16th and he scored 640 points in those races. Martins best finish was equal to Gordons worst finish, 16th, and he scored 319 points. Take out the RP races and the final margin is only 43 points instead of 364. Roush was terrible at RP tracks that year, five cars and only three top tens total. 63. The standings could have ended in a tie and both events took place in the first two races of the season. 64. Ryan posted: 05.03.2020 - 12:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @63 Good point. However, I really believe Earnhardt could have won the last race at Atlanta if he wanted to. He was more concerned of just finishing in front of or beating Mark Martin. You can tell from watching the race that beating Martin was the main strategy rather than winning the race. 65. That's why they threw it (I would believe) but this would have been a fun finish otherwise and Kahne would've scored his lone RP win. 66.
