Great ending of the season runs for Wimmer in a RCR car, Stremme, and Scott Riggs. I expect better things for Riggs next year. I'm not much of a Johnson fan, but nice job winning the championship. Next year, who knows what changes will happen. 3. We must say they served Ford well for the Ford sponsored weekend of racing at Homestead. We need also not forget that Roush Racing also accomplished something at Homestead last year that has never happened in NASCAR History and never may again-The team finished 1-2-3-4.My hats off to Roush Racing. 4. Also, congratulations to Matt Kenseth for remaining a contender right up to the end despite all of the bull shit and crappy luck. And finally, last but not least, Jimmie Johnson. Yes, Jimmie, I am one of your common detractors, but you did do a great job this season and your team only cheated for one race this season that I can remember. Now the praise that you get will at least be deserved, since you can stand alone as a NASCAR Cup champion, and not just simply a Jeff Gordon protege/clone. Speaking of Jeff Gordon, did anyone else notice that he was the only person during the entire broadcast to make a mention of this being NBC's final NASCAR telecast? The announcers said nothing and neither did the reporter who was interviewing Gordon. It was also funny (and comically sad at the same time) that Weber and Benny were seemingly struggling to say something to fill time at the end of the show. I think they repeated a version of the phrase "It's over, Johnson wins 2006" about three times. 5. Many notable drivers in this one so ill list them and why it was notable. truex:best finish so far, hamlin for a stellar rookie campaign,Stremme for a good run, elliot for a and im saying this loosely 'good" finish,Petty for a 35th place standings,Gilliland for a strong run spoiled by Benny Parsons,Montoya for having a strong car(back to him in a sec),and mayfield for his return. Im happy for junior...as usual, because he acually had a car to beat!(during the daytime...do not disagree, im sick of the criticsizing...I have my own opinion as a matter of fact.)Sadly it was spoiled by night time and hittin the wall. And the happiest thing is that Talledega did not effect his hopes(add martinsville and its a different story...but what can you do?)Good luck next year junior...WIN THE 500 AGAIN!WOOOOOOOO! How about Montoya!he was on a roll most of the way,But the crash....i cant describe it...one of the scariest crashes I have ever seen.I was very worried if he ws hurt.He will win a few races next year...I can tell by his showing at Homestead. Im surprised nobody mentioned this being the last NBC broadcast!YAY!NO MORE COMMERCIALS!YAY!I will miss Wally though....funny guy... A great season overall and now for my question to you all Who's gonna win next Year? I think either Hamlin,Stewart,Junior,or Johnston. 9. He needed it too, only winning one race prior before this one at Darlington about six months prior. It's amazing that Biffle was considered a threat to win the championship. Only two wins and fifteen top tens on the year, plus those 6 DNF's, all really hurt him. Not to mention the fact that early on in the year he lead the most laps in a few races only to end up failing to finish due to some type of problem or just losing the handle on the car completely and struggling to finish in the top ten. He finally started hitting his stride, winning at Darlington in a dominating performance and netting himself about five or six top tens in the next batch of races. Greg should be one to look for next year in the Cup. 15. Steve posted: 11.21.2006 - 9:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Greg also had just 5 Top 10s since Sonoma, and not many other decent finishes. Unbelievable struggle for a driver considered a favorite for the championship. Note to Brian France: The CHA$E failed again (like it did in 2004)! Without the CHA$E, Jimmie Johnson would have beaten Matt Kenseth by only 4 points, rather than 56! You flayed the skin off the closest championship margin, baby; you butchered it 6 ways to sunset! Wake up and smell the coffee! Or drink coffee! Maybe you won't get crash into another tree! Make some logical changes to the CHA$E, or get rid of it! Now I digress: Greg Biffle's 50th Top 10 in his 150th start (1st) Mark Martin makes his 617th consecutive and final start for Jack Roush (18th) Jamie McMurray's 150th start (35th) Juan Pablo Montoya's debut (34th) Kyle Petty stays in the Top 35! Had that panned out and Kenseth needed the position, I can imagine Bif would have been compensated quite well to brush the wall and have to pit the car on the white lap. I remember an RPM2Nite where the question came up about taking a dive for a teammate and they just so happened to have some Roush boys on and they all agreed they would only if it meant a teammate winning a title (Benson, Musgrave, Burton were maybe the ones they asked, I think) 35. Martinsville was dissapointing. Also Denny Hamlin didn't run that well throughout the chase, but they capitilized and finished races well. Interesting chase year. Jimmie ran the best and finished the races the best, therefore winning the first of his five championships. 50. Ameriquest took over as sponsorship the next year and then 3M took over. National Guard would move to HMS to sponsor the 25 car which later became Dale Junior's 88 ride. * Jimmie Johnson's only title driving the Chevy Monte Carlo for a full year, in 2007 they drove some of the season in COTs and the rest in the regular style. * Michael Waltrip does not qualify for the race, would be the last race for him and Bill Davis/Doug Bawel who sold him the ride. Michael was clearly looking for shelter from the storm and not a fulltime ride. Most of that team's assets were put into MWR. Bill Davis kept the 22 and ran it with Dave Blaney. * This would be Briann Vickers's last event with the 25 team and GMAC's last race as a sponsor as they would be an associate sponsor the rest of the year. * Last race for Coors Light as a primary sponsor, Lone Star Steakhouse would be the primary sponsor for the 40 and the last race for the "Silver Bullet" paint scheme used from 2001-06(although black was incorporated in 2006) * Last race Ryan Newman drove the black and white Alltel car, from 2002 onwards Newman always drove a car that was black and white(with some teal was added for 2006), in 2007 they opted to give him an all blue paint scheme. * Was supposed to have been Mark Martin's last race, but instead it was Mark's last race in the 6 which he had a great deal of success even though he did not pick up a title. Mark Martin would later resurface with Ted Ginn on a limited basis, Hendrick Motorsports for two years and then MWR. * Final time the GM Goodwrench car buzzsaw scheme was ran, a paint scheme that debuted in 2003 with Kevin Harvick, GM Goodwrench left as sponsor and was replaced with Shell/Pennzoil which ran a yellow and red car which Harvick would in the Daytona 500. They would still keep the small '3' on the door next to the 29. * Final full season anyway for the spoiler era of NASCAR, 2007 was run part time with the car of tommorow. Rear Wings were introduced from 2007-2010 before the spoiler returned in early 2010. * Last time the 01 would be owned strictly by Ginn Racing and MB2 and last time Joe Nemechek drove for the 01 team, Mark Martin would resurface and drive for them in 2007. * Last race the 42 was driven by Casey Mears and the last race for the black paint scheme used from 2004-06. Juan Montoya who was announced as the driver would get a slight alteration of the paint scheme the next year. * Jeff Gordon's final race in the paint scheme he drove from 2001-2006, in 2007 there was a slight alteration to the paint scheme with flames on the rear and on the front. * Last race Matt Kenseth drove his paint scheme he drove from 2005-06, the next year, it was painted all yellow with black stripes. 51. For example, Bill Weber went scuba diving with Jeff Gordon in 2002, Matt Yocum went on Jeff's boat to give fans a look at Jeff Gordon's personal life back in 2003. A few other pre-race segments showed Jamie McMurray meeting the Allison family in 2003 at the EA Sports 500 and unveiling the 1987 retro Havoline colors on Jamie's 42 he drove for Ganassi at the time. I actually liked their pre-race Countdown to Green profiling the latest on and off-track news. NBC and the other networks need to get back to that sort of thing, it "humanizes" the drivers and shows them as just regular guys making tons of money driving race cars for living and gives fans a better look into their personal lives. Certain networks want to get you closer to the action with in-race reporters and going all-access with the team or getting some badass narrator like a Clint Eastwood, or Blake Shelton or Denis Leary, or in other words "NASCAR in the way you've never seen it before", NBC made NASCAR, "the way you've always wanted to see it". 59. Unfortunately We got a manufactured points system that had a less intense battle. 62. joey2448 posted: 08.16.2016 - 4:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The last race for the "Tide Ride" until Sept. 2016, when Matt Kenseth drove a one-off paint scheme with Tide as the primary sponsor as a retro throwback. 63. Johnson won his 7th in his 15th season at the age of 41, while Petty won his 7th in his 21st season at the age of 42. Earnhardt's 7th came in his 16th season at the age of 43. 65. kup posted: 11.02.2017 - 9:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) UPS: universal points system. A little sad when you think about how that whole time he was carrying the torch for his late son, who should have had the chance to write his own story in that car. 69.
