Congrats to these drivers on good finishes. Mark Martin(Career high Daytona 500 2nd), Mike Wallace(4th), David Ragan(5th), David Gilliland(8th), Joe Nemechek(9th), David Stremme(11th). Toyota's debut ended up with Dale Jarrett finishing 22nd the highest. Great finish and congrats to Kevin Harvick winning on the exact date Dale Earnhardt died 6 years later. 3. Kyle Busch got loose on the apron in turn four, hit Matt Kenseth, and all hell broke loose. Clint Bowyer slid across the finished line upside down and on fire after getting hit by Casey Mears. The first 152 laps were damn boring. Then, there was the Stewart-Busch wreck. Then the Johnson-Raines-Hamlin-Green-Reutimann wreck. Then the edwards-Sorenson-Stremme wreck, which caused the Blaney-Schrader-Bowyer wreck. Then there was the McMurray-Rudd-Earnhardt Jr. wreck. Then the Sadler-Kahne-Gilliland-Nemechek-J. Gordon-Stremme-Yeley-Sorenson-Said-R. Gordon-Sauter-Marlin-Bowyer-Mears-Labonte-Ky. Busch-Biffle-Kenseth wreck. Juan Pablo Montoya got a good finish because he made it through the wreck, as did Dale Jarrett and the wounded cars of Edwards and Rudd. Oh yeah, Tony Stewart finished last. HaHa. At least he didn't blame it on Kurt Busch. 4. mcmurrayfan posted: 02.19.2007 - 4:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I was really disappointed to see Mark lose this one, I thought he was going to win (congrats to Harvick and Childress). It would have been cool if the #29 still had Goodwrench as the primary sponsor to win on the 6th anniversary of the death of Earnhardt. Johnny Sauter ran up toward the front all day and could have finished better. David Stremme also ran up front most of the race. Gilliland had a long day after a pit road accident with Robby Gordon but got the Lucky Dog and come back to finish 8th. 5. According to NA$COW's rules which FOX *CLEARLY EXPLAINED AFTER THE RED FLAG*, Martin would have won the race because his car was ahead of Harvick's. But I guess NA$COW needed a golden boy to win this one. Harvick is one of the whiniest, spoiled, drivers in the garage. He reminds me more of a cocky teenager than a grown-up. NASCAR threw the caution once the 07 flipped and Harvick was ahead, either way there was no point in ruining a good finish for a cheap caution, let Harvick and Martin go to the finish for the win, the guys behind the wreck are either going to be involved or get around it and finish the race, throwing a caution wouldnt have helped them around the wreck. Also Harvick becomes the 4th driver to win the Busch Series 300-miler and the Daytona 500 (Bobby Allison in 1988, Mr. Boogity in 1989, and Junior in 2004). Watching Tony Stewart's bad luck in the 500 must be like watching Dale Earnhardt's bad luck in this race. Both could win the Shootout (formerly the Busch Clash), the 125 (now 150), the IROC race, and the Busch race, yet come up short come money time. After 9 Daytona 500 starts: Stat...............Earnhardt...Stewart Laps Led.............101..........265 2nd place................1............1 engine problems....3............2 crashes..................0............4 Clint Bowyer: first non-Top 10 finish at Daytona, but just before flipping over he was in the Top 10 David Gilliland: first Bud Pole, first Top 10 (8th) Bobby Labonte: 475th start (21st) Mark Martin: first Daytona 500 in a Chevrolet, but not his first in a GM car; in 1982 and 1983 he raced a Buick, 375th Top 10 finish David Ragan: crashed on Thursday, hung out at the back, avoided trouble, and finished 5th! Also rookie of the race. Mike Wallace: almost didn't beat Sterling Marlin for a transfer spot on Thursday, and he finishes 4th (his best 500 finish) on Sunday! 8) Of course, the wreck helped a little bit. David Reutimann IS racing for Michael Waltrip Racing; he is using the OWNER POINTS from the #32 Cal Wells Chevy, in case qualifying is rained out and there is a benefit from that. Cal Wells does not own the car. 16. Itchyredpecker posted: 02.20.2007 - 1:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Steve, you are absolutely right. My brother and I made fantasy picks way back on February 8th for this race: Stewart and Kurt Busch. You wouldn't believe how loud we were yelling! The real tragedy of this race is that we never got to see how strong Kurt's car was. We saw that Stewart was able to pass Kurt under green and that Kurt was able to hold off Stewart under green for laps on end, but we were never able to see if Kurt could pass Stewart under green instead of pit road. I honestly believe if that wreck hadn't happened, the two of them would have still been out front to settle it Pearson-Petty style on the final lap. It just sucks, that's all. After they wrecked, I couldn't have cared less who won this race. Too bad for Martin, but I guess it was karma for saying this, and not the 17 previous years at Roush, was the best shot he had to win the 500. Jack didn't seem so pleased about that. 21. Roush Racing treated it as 1/36th of the season, and therefore didn't put extra work into it. 22. Thomas posted: 02.20.2007 - 6:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (4) Piece of crap 500. Brock posted: 02.21.2007 - 3:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I actually think because Mark Martin is classy is the reason he didn't win this race. When they came off turn 4, Martin didn't bump Harvick up the track like Richard Petty did to Yarborough in the 1984 Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Petty had the inside and when he blocked, he got the extra momentum and edged ahead for the win. Sure the aero package was different back then and there weren't any restrictor plates, but it's just as much about momentum today as it was back then. I'm not saying it's bad that Martin races clean or anything like that, but it certainly cost him this race. I have no doubt that if Harvick were on the inside of Martin that last lap, HE would have bumped Martin up the track. 27. I was cheering for Kyle Busch to pass Martin, but once it was apparent that wouldn't happen, I cheered for Martin. At least Kyle Busch didn't wreck Martin, thank God. Mark Martin should run the entire Nextel cup schedule this year, he still has enough skill to win a championship. It's probably too late for that to happen being Ragan Smith is supposed to run 14 or so races in the 01 car. And let's not forget, Mark Martin has earned around $60,000,000 for racing a car. I don't feel too sorry for him for never having won a championship. I also say Nascar, nor any announcers ever refer to the Daytona 500 as Nascar's Super Bowl. First off, the team which wins the Super Bowl are NFL Champions, whereas the Daytona 500 winner is not Nascar's champion. Also, by referring to it as Nascar's Super Bowl, they are only admitting they are not as popular as the NFL. No need to mention it at all. If Nascar puts such prestige into the Daytona 500, let them give the winning team an extra 100 points. It still gives the same points as New Hampshire, which I think is not too exciting of a track, no offense. Have a nice day. 31. But when they did throw the caution Harvick had already passed Martin and had obtained the lead without enough time for Martin to get it back so it didn't matter. Honestly saying that it "would've wrecked a good finish" is outrageous when it comes to driver safety. For Shame NASCAR! Also "NASCAR threw the caution once the 07 flipped"? The next day, I attempted to avert my eyes from the media tickers but failed, learning that Harvick had won and feeling not too excited but glad for him. However, on my way back to the hotel that night, I glimpsed a page from some newspaper's sports section lying on the ground, and saw that Harvick only won by mere INCHES over MARK MARTIN. When I watched the recorded broadcast at home for the first time, just then realizing how agonizingly close Mark had actually come to winning the thing, I almost felt glad to not have witnessed it live; I might have cried. I would have hated to seen Nascar throw a flag on what was the greatest finish of all time. You talk about controversy. You guys are right, though. Just because Mark has raced so many years doesn't mean he deserves it more. Maybe 2009 will be his year. Kevin Harvick has a heck of a resume': He has won out West, Midwest, South, North, and East. He has won a restrictor plate track, he has won on a short track, he has won on a road course, he has won on intermediate tracks, he has won on flat tracks, and high banked tracks. He has won the two most prestigous races in Nascar (Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400) He has won 3 truck races, 32 Busch/Nationwide races, and 11 Cup races. He has won an IROC championship. He has won two Busch titles. He owns his own truck and cars series. He is just amazing. He is a very versitle driver. Only thing missing is a Cup title. I wouldn't bet against him on that either. For all the people who think Martin got robbed, get over it. The wreck happened on the front straightaway and was in no way any danger to the leaders, and NASCAR made the right call by letting them race. 78. I love how people still insist nearly ten years later the only reason he won is because of NASCAR being inconsistent (not on here right now, but I've seen it on other places). And for a sport where people complain (as they should, and I admit I'm one of them) when NASCAR does throw the caution in this instance, like both Talladega races a few weeks ago, you'd think they would be happy that they let them race. Guess it depends more on who the winner is than actually caring about the integrity of the sport. Only two of them (the already established #22 of Bill Davis Racing and Dale Jarrett who was able to use the past champion's provisional) were guaranteed spots in the field--the other 6 tried to race their way in, and most didn't make it. But it took less than 10 years for every single one of those Toyota teams to cease to exist. Bill Davis Racing, Red Bull Racing, and Michael Waltrip Racing were all part of Toyota's entry into the sport, and now none of them exist. Instead, Toyota is now only with Joe Gibbs Racing plus the Furniture Row satellite team, along with the remnants of the old Red Bull team, BK Racing, which probably won't be around much longer itself. I had this realization earlier today, that these new Toyota teams that were fighting so hard to get into the sport were all gone within 10 years. It's pretty shocking. The packs were really spread out for quite a while which reminded me of the 2004 Daytona 500, and that race was really uneventful from about 70 to go until the last lap. I will say that the final 50 laps of the race were absolutely mental. Since Stewart and Busch were the two most dominant cars of the day, when they took each other out, everyone felt that they had a chance to win. The finish was wild but heartbreaking for Martin, especially when you consider that Mark had one of the best cars all race and Harvick had led 3 laps before the final one.
