Brock posted: 04.30.2007 - 7:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) Such an infuriating race. The latter part of the event was like a long setup to a terrible joke. First, the field raced single-file for nearly thirty laps. Then, just when the racing's starting to get good, the race gets forced into "overdrive" when NASCAR can't clean up after ONE CAR fast enough. The extra delay not only forces some to refuel a la New Hampshire 2006, but gets the drivers even more riled-up and they inevitably wreck before everyone can even get through turn one on the restart, forcing the race to end. And, best of all, it all ends with Jeff Gordon breaking Earnhardt's win record on The Intimidator's 56th Birthday. Not angry yet? Well, the crowd sure was! And, let's face it, there was plenty to be angry about. Some were angry that Earnhardt's win total was passed up. Some were angry just because Jeff Gordon won. Some were angry Junior lost his chance to battle his explicitly-named rival in the sport. On a completely different angle, others might even have just been angry that Gilliland hooked Stewart. But I suspect most of them, like myself, were angry that the race not only ended under caution, but did so before even completing one lap! Interesting that when NASCAR pulled out the red flag at the same point late in the Busch race THE DAY BEFORE, the result turned out far better! I'd recommend scrapping GWC and making a hard-and-fast rule about that. Why not just red-flag a race if a caution comes out, say, within five laps of the white flag. Then, maybe then we'd have a better chance at a green-flag finish by allowing the drivers to calm down, and preventing races from exceeding their scheduled distance! Just a suggestion. 3. daniel posted: 04.30.2007 - 12:06 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Gordon was faster than anyone 4. I am not kidding. But back to the point, I agree with Brock on the red flag idea, it definitley gives the drivers a chance to cool off.I honestly think that it would have helped. If it didnt, the I also agree with smartliberals idea. But they should only put it in effect with 2 laps to go or less. It really steams me over when a driver wins in the cheapest way possible (Under Caution) and they should find a way to always ensure a green finish or at least a shootout to the line.(Look at the 07 500 finish!)With that said I'd like to say that im proud of Gordon for passing Earnhardts win record (OH MY GOD THIS GUYS GONE NUTS!) I saw it coming and it was going to be broken one day,I just wish that it happened some other day, I wouldnt have been as bummed out if it was any other race.So good for you Gordon! Junior definitley may not have won, but I honestly have to say that he showed me that he still has one of the best plate rides (He got back into the lead draft all by himslef once!)He'll be the winner of the plate races again some time, and I think its this year! Lastly to all you junior fans: I was pissed to but I WOULDNT THROW S**T ON THE TRACK!Im really getting sick of those people who do that whenever Junior loses to Gordon or another Hendrick team at Tally, its really degrading to his fans. Notables- David Gilliland: Best carrer cup finish (4th) Jamie Mcmurrays strong finish (5th) David Stremme: Best carrer finish (8th) DEI: Good finishes for the 2 frontmen of the team (Junior 7th and Truex 10th) Kasey Khane: FINALLY a good finish! Brock posted: 04.30.2007 - 8:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's a valid point, Dan, but the problem was that when NASCAR threw the red flag back then, there wasn't a specific rule about under what conditions they should do so (consider 1999 Sears Point, 2002 Daytona 500). That, along with fan backlash, is why they went for the simpler-to-enforce GWC rule. 9. If we're gonna compare racers to Hollywood celebrities, let's start with Mr. Gordon. He is the Mel Gibson of NASCAR. Several years ago, popular opinion of both men was that they were level-headed upright people, and there was nothing to make anyone think otherwise. That is, until both men did something stupid and irrational, and showed no remorse. I'm glad to see that my opinion of the finish is shared by the majority of you. David Reutimann's engine breaks (tough break, because he was in the Top 10) in the tri-oval. Jamie McMurray is CLEARLY leading the race. NA$CAR withholds the caution flag until "they ae sure that oil is on the track". When an engine blows, there's a 99% chance that oil has been dropped on the track! No, I didn't want to see Gordon win (I can't remember the last time I was glad to see him win, and I especially wasn't on this particular day), but that's not what upset me. It's that McMurray was leading, but the caution wasn't thrown until the leaders were in Turn 2; by then Gordon was the new leader. Am I supposed to think anything else besides that NA$CAR waited for Gordon to take the lead before the yellow flag? I haven't watched the Brian France $erie$ lately for reasons just like this; stupid rules changes or race calls by the governing body. The race up until lap 158 was great, alot of lead changes, 3-4 wide racing, no one driving to stupid. Then everyone decided to get into one big line and once they did everyone was scared to pull out. Finally Johnson, Gordon and Stewart grew some balls and pulled out. The racing got great for like 4 laps until David blew up which sucked (im sure darrell waltrip will agree with me) but nascar waits till gordon has the lead to throw the yellow. Then on the GWC they get up to about 150MPH, just enough time for that damn 48 car to get into 2nd and Biffle pulls the dumbest stuff ive ever seen to end it under caution. Whoever said the last 30 laps were a setup to a bad joke hit the nail on the head, i wasnt as mad that Gordon won, i was just mad that i hyped myself up for a crazy dega race, when the finish (if u wanna call it that) SUCKED now i gotta wait till October. Any more than say, 47 cars on a track at once poses an extreme safety hazard. There'd be at least 20 cars not up to pace making laps around a track. Not to mention, should a wreck happen at Dega or Daytona, the magnitude of it would be much, much worse. The reason NASCAR ran large fields in the pre 1980s era was that the majority of the cars would drop out before halfway, and even then drivers complained that it was a hazard on superspeedways. 26. Apparently, Harvick slammed into McMurray on the white flag lap. He said that he thought McMurray caused the Stewart wreck, and he let his hothead side decide what to do. McMurray then swerved around Harvick to get his position back, prompting NASCAR to punish both of them. They both joked about it, but it's $25,000 down the drain. There's so many reasons this is silly some of which are pit stalls, backmarkers creating traffic(which is part of racing but not to the degree of having to start lapping cars 5 laps into events), the purse(race winnings) don't add up for what you guys what, and drivers and car owners aren't going to want to split winnings even more then they do already, just to finance Kirk Shelmerdine's lack of talent(calling it like I see it). 33. biffle16 posted: 05.09.2007 - 12:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Just another reason why Kevin Hardick is my least favorite driver. 34. This was the first year NASCAR turned into what it is today, after Sprint and Nextel merged all it became was the sanctioning body wanting to make a quick buck. In the fall, the Car of Tommorow debuted for plate racing...which IMO should have been debuted at Daytona. The 2007 season was lame because the teams had to build two different race cars. This basically prompted some of the teams that were mainstays such as Ginn Racing to merge with Dale Earnhardt Inc. and MB2 to merge its efforts with Ray Evernham. The COT basically was meant to be a cost cutting measure instead it ran a lot of competitive teams out of the series and newer teams had a tough go of it. 44. NASCAR won't always throw a caution for an engine failure. They were hoping he would get down out of the groove quickly, and when he didn't, NASCAR had no choice but to throw the caution flag, and that wait for him to get off the surface is what allowed Gordon to take the lead. What no one ever brings up, is similarly to at Fontana last year, NASCAR held off on throwing the caution until the driver they wanted was in the lead or in the case of Fontana the driver they didn't want to win was out of the lead. In this race David Ruettiman(sp?) blew his engine with a few laps to go in turn four while Jamie McMurray was leading the race. NASCAR waited until the cars were in turn one to throw the caution, at which point Gordon had passed McMurray. Since no one else is calling BS here, I'll be the first. And, before I get called a hater or a conspiracy theorist or anything, I'll have you all know Jeff was one of my drivers since I started watching NASCAR in 2000. Just calling it like I see it. 56. When Jimmie Johnson does it however, he's such a class act, the greatest of all-time, a great ambassador for NASCAR, blah blah blah. Stay mad Junior/Senior fans, stay mad. It must suck knowing Dale Jr is the definition of average and that Jeff was every bit of good as if not better than the old man. You people are seriously paranoid. 58. chevyfan98 posted: 08.07.2016 - 7:50 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Average drivers don't win 26 cup races and finish in the top five in points on multiple occasions. But that's none of my business. 59. Rev posted: 01.12.2017 - 3:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (5) He's average. He's made an entire career off of his last name and is mega popular because his father died and all of his fans lost their hero. He's never won a championship. Sucks you can't accept it. 60. Average would be more along the lines of drivers like Brian Vickers, Mike Skinner, or Elliott Sadler. I think Junior is certainly a few tiers over drivers like that. 61. chevyfan98 posted: 01.12.2017 - 7:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) LOL. If not winning a championship makes a driver average, then I guess these following drivers are average: Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson, Ernie Irvan, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Harry Gant, Fred Lorenzen, and Tim Richmond. Oh wait, they never had fathers who won 76 races and 7 championships and therefore no matter how good they became they're still a failure because they couldn't measure up to daddy. And his dad was so popular that he never won MPD during his lifetime. 62. Most of us know that whether or not a driver is good is not solely determined by whether or not the driver wins a championship. And from 2014 forward, that is even more true, with NASCAR's championship format being so random. 63. However would Dale Earnhardt have been proud and happy for Jeff Gordon, I think so. I also think that Dale Earnhardt would been upset at the way the fans acted. 64. I enjoyed this race very much, especially when all of the Dale Earnhardt, Sr./Jr. fans threw crap on the track in disgust because they couldn't stand Gordon winning the race. I was glad when they interviewed him in victory lane and he basically said he was there to win races and that he has a lot of fans that want to see him win, and he's not just going to pull over because Earnhardt fans think everything should be handed to them. Jeff was the man on restrictor plate tracks. 12 wins total, the most all-time. 68. Mannoroth posted: 10.13.2017 - 7:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 67. And in 2016, Jimmie Johnson got his 77th win at Fontana and it was absolutely okay that he surpassed Dale Earnhardt. No one complained... Would it be different, if Jimmie Johnson raced against Earnhardt in 1990s and was beating him almost every race like Gordon did? I think so... 69.
