Someone is about to get the hook in the DEI engine department. I think Mike Wallace might have had something for the leaders at the end if he hadn't have punched the wall near the end. The COT will definitely need a little tweaking with. Lots of right fronts blowing when you should have been able to run all 188 laps and not change tires. 3. But Once agian Jr. fans start to get a little excited and hopeful because he comes outta the box and leads some laps and looks like hes gonna be in contention and once agian his day ends in smoke along with Truex. Im frustrated because it seems like DEI/Childress engine package is crap. And I hate how Gordon & Johnson pussy around for 160 laps and then catch a break and then win the damn race.....hey Jeff its a race not a pussy sunday drive....Oh and awesome to see Raines & Sauter have a good run. I thought Mikey had a top ten run till more bad luck and Rabbit Release Sadler gets caught up in someone else's screw up....agian. And The COT actually put a decent show but they need to go back to the 2000-2002 aero package 4. DaleJrFan16 posted: 10.08.2007 - 12:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race reminds me of the 00-01 aero package to some extent. Perhaps if the drivers werent so afraid to pull out of line and actually go 2-3 wide this could have been better, But hey, 22 drivers led a lap so its all good. Oh and my thoughts on TEI's engines....F^$# THAT PACKAGE! You'd think after 6 engine failures they would try a different one. >:( I was really pulling for Blaney at the end. Good run none the less. BTW on a totally off topic but sadder note, my great grandmother had a massive stroke this morning and the doctors say she probably wont make it. I need some support here to make it through this difficult time. 5. Darrell posted: 10.08.2007 - 2:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First Cup start for Jacques Villeneuve. I too, would have liked to see Blaney win. One more lap and he might have done it. Not complaining about Gordon though. 6. It says only McMurray and Mears did, but so did Jacques. :) I wanted Blaney to win, but oh well. He really pushed Gordon to the front, so good job to him. DEI-RCR engines went six for seven on the day as Bowyer was the only one who survived without any incident. Another top ten for Mears... jeez. And this Chase is a joke. Just give Gordon the title already. Fourth place is 150 some points back? Are you serious? Another championship for Hendrick in 2007. I guess they deserved it for being so dominant all year. 7. Anonymous posted: 10.08.2007 - 7:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Villeneuve did a decent job, after a lot of the drivers expected him to run into everything but the pace car. Three of the drivers who DNQ'ed (Allmendinger, Riggs, Said) were faster than any of the locked-in cars. NASCAR needs to fix this fast. Nice to see Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip, and Dave Blaney up front a little. Of the seven RCR/DEI engines in this race, two finished, and one of those (Harvick) was on seven cylinders at the end of the race. Of course, Paul Menard's DNF wasn't because of the engine. 8. The 11 fastest qualifiers were "go or go home" cars, and had the old qualifying procedure been in place, all of the non-Top 35 cars would have made the race! David Ragan, David Gilliland, Reed Sorenson, Johnny Sauter, and Ken Schrader would have failed to qualify! Jacques Villeneuve stuck to his word and did not "try to be a hero" in his debut. It seems that a car owner could put any schmuck of a driver in a car (some obscure driver like Kip Stockwell or Jim Inglebright) and they'd be in the race, yet a proven talent like Brian Vickers (without proper owner points) could fail to qualify. This is just one of the many things I dislike about the "improving and progressing" NA$CAR. Blaney would be up high with drafting help from Wallace, Johnson, Villenueve, Vickers, Kyle Busch,J.Burton & Casey Mears. Then, coming out of 2,around 10th, Jeff Gordon would be shoved into the grass. He would then hook up with a draft going around 205. Blaney would then apply the spurs to the 22 and wind up wheel-to-wheel with Waltrip. Then, Nemechek would make a banzai 5- wide move for 10th. Then,in a battle for 15th, Montoya clips Edwards, which flips him over over. 4 others are involved in the melee. He slides on his roof until about the last 250 ft. of the backstrech. He then rolls back onto his wheels and continues on. That sets up a race to the flag. Waltrip and Blaney then make contact in 3 & Blaney gets run up the track. Gordon then comes between them to make it three-wide out of 4. Then, in the homestretch, Villenueve goes WAY below the yellow line to come to fifth with Vickers for help. And NASCAR ACCEPTS it!!!!! Then, Blaney, Gordon & Waltrip come to the stripe with Blaney winning it by .001. The ESPN announcers would be yelling themselves hoarse and blowing blood vessels to be heard over the deafining roar of the crowd!!!!!! Over half of America would be watching on ESPN!!! The equipment was horrible to the point of the cars being off the pace. The first fulltime Toyota teams struggled mightily in 2007. It did not take until 2008 when Joe Gibbs started running Toyotas that Toyota's success started taking off but they still suck as far as engines go. JGR has been successful because they had good structure through 2008-2010 but with them switching to a factory engine on all Toyotas in a cost-cutting measure could prove to be the downfall. * Waltrip started the season with a lot of optimism so it was nice to finally see him win a pole to get something out of a lousy season that started him in the red(negative) as far as points go for the water in the fuel fiasco at Daytona. 41. ii posted: 03.11.2012 - 12:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The top 3 DNQ's could have qualified in the top-15. Gordon did not win his 11th until his 58th. Earnhardt's domination and breaking the draft is something that was simply unheard of (leading by 30 seconds in the 1990 Daytona 500? Driving from last to first in the Busch Clash after the inversion in less than two laps? Winning races against cars who were probably cheating? Greg Sacks in the 1990 spring Talladega race/Jimmy Spencer in the 1994 Talladega race). Nobody controlled plate races quite like Earnhardt in his heyday, particularly the 1991 summer Talladega race, where he managed to rattle all the Ford teams so much they ended up fighting each other rather than going after him. Earnhardt's level of consistency on plate tracks was also unheard of and unlike anybody else, for something that is frequently so much of a crapshoot. Admittedly, it became MORE of a crapshoot after Earnhardt's death in much of Gordon's later career, but it doesn't say a lot for Gordon that he very rarely contended for any plate wins after 2007. Honestly, I can't think of a whole lot of plate races for Gordon that he SHOULD have won but didn't, while we can all think of several for Earnhardt. Gordon was a better road racer than Earnhardt, yes, but not a better plate driver. 54. Heck, even before RP's, he was putting up great to dominating performances on superspeedways. Nobody, before or since, has matched his dominance at Daytona and Talladega. He was consistently the favorite to win not only in Winston Cup or in Busch (before he stopped running BGNS races), but in IROC, as well. I think his success is even more impressive considering that he dominated most of those races while with Childress, too, and not with Hendrick, who was consistently the best organization of the 2000s. 56. True, but RCR was one of, if not the best team in the late 80's/early 90's. Even with Jeff as my favorite I too think that Earnhardt was better at plate tracks, as he was almost always a contender to win. Having an average finish of 10.7 and 12.4 at Daytona and Dega respectively is quite remarkable considering how much of a crapshoot those tracks can be. But with that said, I think RCR had a great advantage at plate tracks almost like DEI in their heyday. My proof? Mike Skinner. In 16 plate starts with RCR from 1997-2000, he had 4 top 5's and 8 top 10's, and for the most part he was average to below average for RCR standards everywhere else. But he looked really good at those two tracks, which tells me that RCR naturally had good cars there. But that shouldn't take away from what Earnhardt did, as Jr., Jeff, and Jimmie looked unbeatable when they had great plate cars at Hendrick and DEI, but often looked lost without them. But yes, Earnhardt is the best at plate tracks imo because he was always a threat to win no matter what. 57. redford posted: 02.28.2017 - 10:34 pm Rate this comment: (2) (2) Why is that when everybody else wins at/is good at restrictor plate racing it is considered a crapshoot but when Dale Earnhardt Sr. or Dale Earnhardt Jr. does it, it is this amazing achievement? I'll give you Earnhardt Sr was probably the most skilled at it, but Jeff is a very underrated plate racer. And I mean c'mon, we're counting Busch Clash and Twin 125 races? 20-25 lappers where the race is essentially over before it starts? Dale Earnhardt won 1 Daytona 500 in his career. 1. Richard Petty has 7. Jeff Gordon has 3. Jeff Gordon has the most wins in history in the spring Talladega race which is considered one of NASCAR's crown jewels. Dale Earnhardt was good on restrictor plate tracks, Atlanta, and Bristol. Jeff Gordon was good everywhere. He was weaker on 1.5 tracks, but on short tracks, superspeedways and road courses he was head of the class. 58. Dale Earnhardt sr. was a very well rounded driver at tracks less than a mile. Dale Earnhardt won 9 times at Darlington and the only cup driver that has more wins than that on the track is David Pearson. Jeff might've had as many Darlington wins as Dale or David if NASCAR gave that track 2 dates in a season after 2004. I'm shocked you forget about good Dale was at Darlington considering the amount wins there and was the best Darlington driver of his era through 1995. Dale Earnhardt was one of the greats at North Wilkesboro. While he only had 5 wins there, he had 32 top 10's and 21 top 5's there in 36 starts. Dale Earnhardt had 5 wins at Richmond. He also had 25 top 5's and 33 top 10's there in 44 starts. Dale also had 6 wins at Martinsville. He had 18 top 5's and 24 top 10's there in 44 starts. 59. The top 35 locked in teams basically qualified with their race setups so that they were ready to go for the race, while the go-or-go homers ran true qualifying setups which were a lot faster, but not as great in the race, knowing their first job was to get into the race. Had this race had a normal event schedule, everybody would have run qualifying setups, with more normal and predictable results. 61.
