He got a bit loose and over corrected it to the right sending his car head on into the wall. He got airborne and rolled down the banking close to 10 times. If you look closely he was moving as soon as the car stopped. Nice to see him get out. COTs are safe thats for sure. 2. WallceFan posted: 04.06.2008 - 7:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Oh yeah, the race? It was alright..some good racing closer to the end, bt nothing to get excited about. Too many tracks like Texas, California and Las Vegas that are just boring. Anyways Great job to Cousin Carl on his 3rd win on the year in just 7 races. Jeff Burton still holding the points lead. Good Job 3. samfan08 posted: 04.07.2008 - 12:42 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) That McDowell wreck was one of the worst I've ever seen. I honestly didn't know how anyone could live through that, much less race 2 days later. Kudos to NASCAR for all the safety improvements since 2001. Pretty forgettable race. Gordon finishes last for just the 2nd time in his career. And both Yates cars come to Texas without sponsorship. You gotta wonder how long they can keep both teams going. Hopefully they find sponsorship, cause they're running pretty solid. 4. While safer, the racing action with the COT has gotten painful to watch. 190,000 as the posted attendance? There were a LOT of empty seats there. That number seems inflated. 5. These COT races are so boring, I don't watch to see wrecks but I watch to see them race not ride around all day. It also isn't fun seeing your guy stall on pit road and lose 2 laps which now meant a sub 40 place finish since cars don't fall out of races anymore.... I have better things to do on Sundays than watch anymore, I watched the finish but couldn't really stomach the boring parts... 7. DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.07.2008 - 2:02 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Martin Truex just can't catch a break. Yeah, 7-8 years ago, bye bye Michael McDowell. Thank the Good Lord for all the safety improvements. That was such a great feeling of relief to see him get out THIRTY SECONDS after taking an awful wreck. And yeah, the race was boring. But Texas always is. Some good finishes, but awful racing. I'll take tiny old Martinsville Speedway any day over these flashy, modern intermediates. They are all bells and whistles, but not racing. 8. Mamorese posted: 04.07.2008 - 5:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kick ass green flag run in the middle portion, even if it was ended by invisibris. Longest green flag run on a 1.5 mile+ track since 2004. Oh and this is actually the 4th time Gordon has finished dead last. He finished last at Atlanta in 1997 and last at North Wilkesboro early on in his career. 9. most posted: 04.07.2008 - 6:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) btw, haha at Jr. not winning! I am not wanting to see Phoenix, since every Jr. fan will be sure it is his race to win since he won there 2 times..... I like how we can assume someone will win a race somewhere because they won there before (like how everyone will be talking about Bowyer at Loudon and Truex at Dover). Everyone assumed Dale would win Texas just because he won there 10 and 8 years ago, things have changed in that many years! 10. I knew he finish last (42nd) at Atlanta in 1997. 14. Dodge posted: 04.08.2008 - 1:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hope it is Mayfield's final Cup race. He had a good thing going at Penske and got himself fired and same at Evernham. At BDR, he really lost a chance at a top ride with another team if he could of been slightly higher finishes and he hoped that since Haas/CNC Racing gets EVERYTHING from Hendrick that would turn his career around but he should of seen the results on the wall from that team last year. 15. Even FOX seemed to make it sound like he'd only finished last twice. But to make it clear, this was his 2nd 43rd place finish in his career. 18. Dodge posted: 04.09.2008 - 7:52 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I predict that the next driver to lose his ride will be J.J. Yeley. His finishes barely have him in the top 35 in owner points. At least Tony Raines had finishes in the top 20 to 25 most of the time. Last year Yeley was always behind his teammates with the same equipment, and look what Kyle Busch is doing with it. If Yeley couldn't handle a good team then what was HOF Racing thinking since their cars are a step behind. They would of been better off probably offering the ride to Ward Burton, Steve Park or Kenny Wallace, who is a great person for sponsors. 19. Jess posted: 04.09.2008 - 12:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) J.J Yeley is a great driver, he just has to much bad luck! Anyone could do better in the #88 car than Dale Jr. is, he has the best car out there, he just can't drive it! Congrats to Carl! and glad to see Michael was able to race after that wreck. 20. DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.09.2008 - 1:53 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Dale Jr and Tony Jr have the act of adjusting their way out of wins down to a science. How many times, this year and previous years in the 8, have they looked so good early on just to be junk by the end. How long until Hendrick cans Tony Jr and gives him a real crew chief? But I was also glad he didn't win. I've had enough of this Dale Jr obsession. He hasn't deserved it. He is good, but not great. He can be really good from time to time, but is woefully inconsistent. Yeah, Mayfield may be on the outs for good now, at least as far as top tier teams go. He'll probably make more Cup starts, but in field filler entries and one off starts. He really screwed up at Penske and Evernham. I wouldn't want him on my team. He points the finger WAY too much. He had a moderate amount of talent, but not nearly enough for the headaches he causes. I was totally shocked JJ Yeley crashed while running all by himself in the middle of the pack (not really). He just hasn't adapted to stock cars at all. I can't believe he hasn't figured out that he isn't on dirt anymore yet. How many times will he do this before he learns? I don't have the official stats, but I'm pretty sure he has wrecked more than he has finished in the top 15. 21. DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.09.2008 - 1:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just looked it up. 18 Top 15 finishes and 12 official crash outs for JJ Yeley. That doesn't count the times he has been limping at the finish many laps down with a torn up race car. That is still pretty darn pathetic in my opinion!!!! (I'm starting to sound like Chip Ganassi) 22. Nuck Chorris posted: 04.09.2008 - 8:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Only 12 official crash-outs for Yeley? DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.10.2008 - 1:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah Nuck, I was surprised Yeley only had 12. He's crashed way more than that, but I guess the talented folks at JGR got him out there to finish the race. But 12 in just over 2 years still isn't very good. 24. sheet metal posted: 04.10.2008 - 8:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I know the economy is in shambles, but it's still rather sad that neither Yates car has a full-time sponsor. They've been running solidly in the top 25 all season, yet no one seems to notice. Everyone is right on with Yeley. He's never even been a factor in any race up to this point, and no, his fuel-mileage assisted 2nd place finish at the Coke 600 doesn't count. Kenny Wallace would be the perfect driver for car sponsored by a TV company such as the #96. 25. Gordon Smiley and Michael McDowell both came from a road racing background and both of them suffered similar qualifying crashes, Smiley's in 1982 at Indy and McDowell's. Both drivers got loose entering the corner and overcorrected. Both cars suddenly regained traction and hit the outside wall head on at 180mph. The only difference? Smiley's car was completely disintegrated, he broke every bone in his body, was killed instantly, and was partially decapitated by the debris fence. McDowell walked away without a scratch. 30. Yes aero push stinks and whatnot, but I'd pick this aero package over the COT any given day. 46. Rusty Wallace said in 1995 it was already a problem when he couldn't pass Earnhardt in the final laps of the Brickyard 400 despite having a fast car in those last laps. I've seen references to aero push as early as 1992. 47. TTaylor944 posted: 09.24.2019 - 10:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The advancements in technology haven't really had much to do with aero push. You hear about it more and more today because the teams understand it better. Follow Brian Keselowski on Twitter and he'll go through this in great depth with anyone that wants to learn how much their knowledge and understanding has changed in the last 30 years. 49. Tarheel posted: 09.24.2019 - 11:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Aero push was definitely a factor years ago, I remember Bobby Hamilton talking about his dominant race winning car at Martinsville in 1998. However, it wasn't nearly as bad then as has become in the last 10-15 years. Before then, the chasing car was more likely to loosen up the car being chased, whereas now the car doing the chasing loses the air on the nose. When they got to the point where all the cars noses were practically sealed to the track, the aero push problem seriously intensified, and the racing got worse. 50.
