Yeah, everyone causes wrecks every now and then, but McDowell seems to cause the really dangerous ones. First his spectacular barrell roll at Texas (which will undoubtably be the highlight of his career) and now this. He will hurt someone eventually. I'm not a huge Dale Jr fan, but they need to get him a real crew chief. With the way that car has run all year, they should be doing much better and have more wins. From blowing any chance of winning the Daytona 500, to constantly having the car much worse at the end of races as compared to the start, to electing not to pit at Indy with tires disintegrating every 10 laps, to this week. Tony Eury Jr is awful. Period. He needs much better. What did they have to gain by staying out?? Not only were they losing valuable time on the track with old tires, they set themselves up for that last caution which buried them. 22nd with a top 5 car. Unacceptable. And his interview was totally ridiculous. Everyone knew he was making a mistake. Just pathetic. Outstanding run by the Awesome Aussie. From dead last to third with few cautions. By the time the first caution flew past the halfway mark, he was up to around 15th. That is an incredible drive. I think had there been no cautions at the end, he might have had a shot at it. What a great weekend for him. Is it just me, or has AJ Almendinger clearly outperformed Brian Vickers over the last month?? Ever since he got Jimmy Elledge, they have been a Top 12 car. Maybe he has a future in stock cars after all. I would never have said that before recently. 2. He will win on a road curse by the time his cup career is over. The Wood Brothers got their best finish since Ricky Rudd finished 2nd at Infineon Raceway in 2005. I hope Bobby Lobonte wasn't hurt too bad in that big wreck. Speaking of that wreck, Michael McDowell showed us again why he shouldn't race in cup. This is another reason why Michael Waltrip shouldn't be a car owner. McDowell won some races in Arca, but so did Steve Wallace. Michael McDowell needs to go to Nationwide or the Truck series full time for a couple years. The good news is Michael McDowell is not expected to be back at Michael Waltrip racing next year. 3. Great run for Marcos Ambrose in the Wood Brothers Ford. ... and hat off the Michael Waltrip for getting his 1st top 40 in 3 weeks with a 39th place finish. He just sucks. I'd like to see Kyle Busch just go on a streak where he drives like crap for 5 or 6 races, I'm sick of seeing him up front every single race. What a great job by Marcos Ambrose - dead last to 3rd! Wow! Allmendinger, Fellows, and even Boris Said (considering Petty's cars aren't worth anything) had good runs. Michael McDowell may be just as much of a wreck machine as Steve Wallace and he needs to go back to Nationwide until he's ready for Cup. Bobby Labonte was sent to the hospital because of McDowell's stupidity. 6. New88Fan posted: 08.10.2008 - 8:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I missed most of this race due to being at church. Kyle Busch becomes the first driver to win three road course races in a single year. The McDowell/Gilliland wreck included some of the hardest hits I've seen all year. Sam Hornish Jr. went driver's side into the water barrels yet still finished on the lead lap. Bobby Labonte, Dave Blaney and David Gilliland all got rattled pretty good, thank goodness no one was injuried. As mentioned before, Dale Jr. definitely needs a new crew chief, that team is running too well to have only one win this season. And a at-a-boy to Marcos Ambrose coming from dead-last to third with very few cautions, that's what I call driver skill. 7. He drove the 21, a team known for missing races and poor finishes, from last to 3rd. I think he has the potential to be a star someday. If it wasn't for the Toyota chinks, he would have won. He really has talent. I'm sick of Kyle Busch dominating. I hope he gets suspended or something so others can have a chance at winning. AJ Allmendinger never ceases to amaze me with his amazing lack of talent. He Can't get a top ten unless there are restarts every ten laps. 10. With around eight laps to go, one of the toughest wrecks I've seen at the Glen took place. Bobby Labonte appeared to have gotten hurt from the wreck, but was thankfully able to walk away from the car on his own, despite grimaces of pain. Bobby was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and I believe he was released without any serious injuries, and cleared to resume competition. Bobby has experienced other race related injuries in the past (such as a broken collar bone in 1999)and thankfully nothing serious was caused by this wreck. Bobby is a great driver and a trooper. I'm sure he'll be fine in time for next week's race at Michigan. 12. #20 (soon to be #14) fan But #48 hater posted: 08.10.2008 - 10:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) CMON Tony Your Gonna Get One SOON! Sad thing though, is that Jr. is so over-rated. All you people saying Eury Jr. needs to be relieved, 2 things 1 No criticizing at Michigan when he won and 2 there is no I IN TEAM. What Kyle should so is hold up one finger showing how many times his replacement has won and then hold up eight to show how many the old Hendrick driver has. Gotta wonder how much Hendrick is kicking himself for keeping Mears and not Busch? DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.12.2008 - 2:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This will sound insane, but I really don't think Rick regrets letting Kyle go that much. I think he knew what he was doing. I say this because everybody has known from the second his NASCAR career started just how ridiculously talented Kyle is. But they also knew how ridiculous he can act when things don't go his way. Let's face it, Kyle hasn't encountered very much adversity this year. With the way those JGR cars have handled and with their incredible horsepower, almost everything has gone right. But the few times they haven't been up to par with the leaders, they have made costly mistakes. At the first Pocono, he trashed two cars of his own doing and finished dead last. At Indy, he drove the tires off the car and got EXTREMELY lucky with a caution flag with a flat rear tire. At Loudon, he got in a shoving match with Montoya, and got wrecked. He gets frustrated and becomes completely counter productive. When pressed, Kyle will make mistakes more often than not. I think Rick saw last year's race at Texas as the final straw. When Kyle wrecked and stormed off and couldn't be found, he realized this isn't somebody that is always good to have around. He needs people like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson who actually raise their game to another level when adversity strikes, not Kyle who makes things worse (Tony Stewart does the same thing). I don't think this was about keeping Casey Mears and not Kyle, or replacing Kyle with Dale Jr, I think he just plain wanted to get rid of Kyle. He knew good and well what a talent Kyle is, and how spectacular he can be when things are going well. But he also knew how much he hurts a team when things don't go well. And he knew HMS would eventually have a down year, at which point he would have to deal with Kyle. Look at the way Hendrick has performed this year. What would Kyle Busch be doing if he had to drive those cars? He would make things 10 times worse. It is actually paying off for HMS this year. Yes Kyle will most likely win the championship this year (if he doesn't it is the biggest choke ever), but eventually JGR will have a down year. Watch what happens then! I think Rick made a good move for the future. 30. Anonymous0 posted: 08.12.2008 - 6:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow DaleSrFan,someone who actually speaks the truth on this. It's his attitude, he's having one of the greatest years in NASCAR history yet you've still seen what he does if things don't go his way. And like DaleSrfan said, what will happen when things don't go his way . JGR will have a down year, it's just a matter of when. 31. The fans and other drivers(Gordon and Johnson) are all trying to get under his skin and in his head, but he doesn't let it shake him one bit. He turns around and with one simply gester he can so easily get under your skin and in your heads. He's just making a point that you all, and the driver trying to play mind games, are really the weak ones out there. He's got his sites set on that trophy and no boos or mind games from jealous and scared drivers are going to shake him off the path to that Championship. 32. So far this year he has scored 16 victories in the top three national touring series sanctioned by NASCAR. Early in the year there was talk that he might try and run for the championship in all three divisions, but he has since cut back on his schedule and focused most of his energies on the biggest prize, the Sprint Cup championship. Inevitably the discussions turn towards Busch??s place in history and one of those discussions will center on breaking the record that most people, including this writer, have thought for years would be unbreakable: Jeff Gordon??s single season victory record of 13 races in a single NASCAR Cup season. After scoring his eighth Cup victory this weekend, it seemed like an appropriate time to take a milestone check and see where Busch ranks in comparison to Gordon??s miraculous 1998 season. In looking back at Gordon??s season the first thing that comes abundantly clear is that this season for Busch will never come close to the overall domination that Gordon poured on his competition. Gordon started the year unceremoniously with four finishes of 16th or worse in the first seven races, but scored two wins and a second in the other three. In the next six races, Gordon started off with an eighth place finish at Martinsville, four straight Top 5 finishes at Talladega, California, Charlotte and Dover, including a win at Charlotte, and a 37th place finish at Richmond. After that point in time, Gordon was simply unbelievable. In the next 20 races Gordon finished outside of the Top 5 ONCE, and that was a seventh place finish at Phoenix in the 31st race of the season. His final totals, in 33 races included 13 victories, six second place finishes, 26 Top 5 finishes and 28 Top 10s. 39% of the time that Gordon took the green flag that season, he was the first driver to see the checkered flag. 79% of the time he came home in the Top 5 and 85% of his races were Top 10 efforts. In the modern era of NASCAR Cup racing, 1972 through present day, there have only been two drivers who have had better numbers than Gordon, but they didn??t have the total package. In 1972, Bobby Allison scored 25 Top 5 and 27 Top 10 finishes during a 31 race season which translates to an 81% and 87% Top 5 and 10 finishing percentage. However, he was only able to win 10 races that season which was a 32% winning percentage. The following year, Richard Petty posted the modern era victory record, which was equaled by Gordon, of 13 victories in a season, and did that in three fewer races. That meant that Petty won 43% of the races he entered that season. However, he only scored 21 Top 5s and 24 Top 10s, so his percentages were 70% and 80%, which both fall short of Gordon??s numbers. Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip also had seasons in the modern era that were close to Gordon??s level of proficiency, but both fell short of Gordon??s impressive numbers. The only other driver who would have had a shot at Gordon??s results was David Pearson. Pearson only ran 18 races in 1973, but won 11 of them, which is a remarkable 61% of the races he entered. He scored 14 Top 5s and Top 10s for a 78% clip, but Pearson didn??t run all of the races for that season, so his numbers are more for speculation of what might have been versus what actually was. While he has not been mathematically eliminated from equaling Gordon??s Top 5 numbers, Busch would have to finish in the Top 5 for all of the remaining 14 races on the schedule and that would still leave him short of the Top 10 percentage. However, Busch is on pace, at this point in the season, to surpass Gordon??s victory numbers. In 1998 Gordon won his eighth race of the season the week after Watkins Glen at Michigan, which happened to be his fourth win in a sequence of four consecutive victories in the middle of the season. It was the 21st race of that season versus the 22nd race of the season that Busch just won this past weekend at the Glen. Busch would need to win six of the remaining 14 races on the schedule to surpass Gordon??s single season record. To save you from pulling out your calculator, that is 42.8% of the races left to be run. So far this year, Busch has won 36.4% of the races, which roughly means if he can slightly increase the pace that he has established already this year, he will indeed beat Gordon??s record by a single victory. Throughout NASCAR history there have been historic runs and record breaking seasons. This season it is Kyle Busch that is on the run that everyone else is envious of and, if he can add just a bit more to his pace, he??ll write his name in the record book alone next to the title for most victories in a single season. 45. A lot of other craptastic drivers have done the same thing. See Michael's driver comments for my list of superstar NASCAR drivers who only won at Daytona or Talladega. It took Michael 462 starts to get a win. He hasn't had a win in the last 148 starts. Now imagine Michael as a rookie today...with the last name Smith. Would any team in their right mind put up with that kind of performance? Don't think so. 46. Under the old points system he would have finished 3rd. 47. Rob McKeever posted: 08.08.2011 - 12:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Very untimely debris caution on lap 65. Don't recall what the debris was, but given that there had been no wrecks before that point, really hate for NASCAR to throw debris cautions in the middle of green flag stops. 48. Teams are permitted to enter a fifth car for a maximum of seven races for a rookie to get the driver familiar with Sprint Cup competition. 51. Competed in 4 races (Mexico City and Watkins Glen in Xfinity, Sonoma and Watkins Glen in Cup), won 3 of them and finished second in the worst car he has ever driven in the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen (#92 Toyota of D'Hondt Motorsports). Probably the best performance ever on road courses in one season. 55.
