NASCAR sets the lineup at 2:30 on Friday when qualifying wasn't supposed to start until 3:30. No effort made to dry the track or reschedule qualifying. The #48 team starts up front at a track which they own, and they get the best pit stall at a track where passing is difficult. No surprise as to who's the winner of this one. - Jamie McMurray's awful luck bites him again. Had a top 5 car, ran up front all day long and finishes 38th because of a mechanical problem. Same situation as Dover. - AJ has a great race in the #10 Dodge, finishing 15th. - Last race for the 00 team this year I believe. - This race also featured 3 blown tires all at once...wow. 2. Jimmie Johnson has a great history here. Dale Jr doesn't have win at Martinsville, but has 8 top 5's in his last 14 races here. Jeff Gorden has a great record here. This proves Hendrick having 3 drivers in the top 5 at Martinsville is not fixed or a fluke. Martinsville is a track based on skill by a driver then equipment. A driver has to go fast, but has to save his brakes here. There is no reason for Hendrick motorsports to cheat here as a result. It is a shame that nascar will not do any major changes with the current car. All the tire problems today was caused by the design of the car. The COT has a history of using more brakes at race tracks. Martinsville always been a track that a driver uses a lot of brakes. Martinsvile and the cot does not mix as a result. A.J. Allmendinger did a good job today. I think this proves Red Bull made a mistake getting a ride of him for Scott Speed. I think Allmendinger hasn't reached his peak as a driver. Bill Elliott has best finish of the year. 3. Someone different needs to visit victory lane, and soon. Jimmie better blow it on the first lap with Burton, Biffle and Edwards finishing 1-2-3 (in any order) if antyhing exciting is gonna happen in the next 4 races. 4. And I would expect someone named Common Sense to know the fact that a race can't be very exciting to watch when you have one guy leading 2/3 of it with no one else able to get by. Also you know it's going to be a boring race when NA$CAR puts the 48 on the pole because of the points, did anybody think he was NOT going to dominate and win? 9. I love going to Martinsville, it is like a county fair atmosphere. It is in a beautiful location tucked into the mountains. And most importantly the racing action is great. Everything is right in front of you, you feel like you are on top of it. I never get this feeling when I go to Charlotte. Even in an event so totally dominated by one driver like this one, there was still a lot of really great action going on throughout the pack at all times. The problem is that TV never shows this, especially during the Chase. If it isn't in the Top 5 on track or between drivers in the Top 12, it never gets shown. In the old ESPN Speedworld days, they showed where the action was, even if between cars not on the lead lap. Now they don't do that and the viewers miss out on great action. Scott Speed looked hopeless out there while Allmendinger did respectable in his first event with GEM at a tough track. Considering how that car has done everywhere else this year, it was a good run. If Michael Waltrip and Juan Montoya raced every lap like they race when they are about to be lapped, they would do a lot better. I was happy to see a few long runs. Sometimes at Martinsville, I feel like half the race is run under caution, but I didn't feel that way this time. Nice to see the race done in less than 3 and 1/2 hours. 14. "he will have the most championships and wins, no disrespect intended to the legends." I doubt it. For one thing, I don't consider a chase championship with as high of a standard as the traditional points championship. That, and I don't think Johnson is going to have another season like last year again. Just look at Gordon, he never duplicated 1998. 15. Great runs for McMurray, Mears, Bill Elliott, Almendinger, and of course the Hendrick guys who just dominated. "the last race for the 00 car" Sortof. Marcos Ambrose will finish the year driving for MWR - they will use the 00 owner points and team, but swtich to #47. Next year Reutimann will take the 44owner points but drive a #00. 16. 18fan posted: 10.20.2008 - 2:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle's best season by far and he has piece of crap luck in the Chase. Anyone know what happened to Sorenson because he was in the top 15 and then crashed 17. 18fan posted: 10.20.2008 - 3:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One more thing. Besides Matt Kenseth being caught up in wrecks, Kyle is the only Chase driver that has had problems. The Chase is crap. It makes the first 26 races meaningless. Jimmie would have about the same lead with Carl second and Kyle third. Kyle had a melted bead THREE times. Beads should not melt after fifty laps on a short track 18. He told him to "stick to the plan". And damed if the boy had not just passed every car on the track in a true manner, but approaches the leader J.J. and to have that whispered into your ear. He had no choice but to let off the gas and let J.J. win. Least we not forget this is the place where lil Rickie Hendick, who hired J.J. and a few others died in a plane crash a few years back, and to have anyone else beside J.J. win the race would ruin the sport and the track.I mean it's bad enough that J.Burton took the victory at the "House that Jimmie built"just a few weeks ago.Come on now didn't you guys hear the team orders? hehe 20. They bought one race worth of primary sponsorship at a discount from Yates. The military has a large budget to promote recruiting, which it does with racing sponsorships. As for Jimmy Johnson, he may tie or even break Cale Yarbrough's title streak, but Jimmy Johnson is no Cale Yarbrough. Cale had more talent in his right hand then all of Jimmy's body. 21. b4il3y posted: 10.20.2008 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kurt Busch may just be the biggest whinebag in the history of NASCAR. Most NASCAR fans probably aren't aware of him yet, or his antics. But I think once they are, he will get booed. 18fan, even under the old system, Kyle would be out of it. I agree with some of your points about the Chase, but he wouldn't win it under the old system either. Yes it has cost him a Top 5 points finish, but not a championship. And the tire problem is a result of Kyle being too hard on the brakes. Everyone knows that with the COT the brakes get really hot, but Kyle kept barrelling into the corners way harder than anyone else, and promptly blew out a lot of tires. But I agree there are a lot of drivers he should finish ahead of this year, but won't. Namely the three RCR cars. I am an RCR fan being from Lexington, NC but I hate their approach to the Chase. Don't be aggressive at all, just hang back, take advantage of attrition, and collect weak Top 10s. That is why I was so excited about the #31 team's pit call at Charlotte. They need more of that. But they almost never do that, and it ain't real racing. I'd love to have seen them tell Earnhardt to do that. He'd probably walk out the door. Yeah, great show of maturity from Kurt Busch. That just shows he hasn't matured. There was a discussion about this on his driver's page, and this shows he hasn't improved. Real racers and real competitors NEVER give up, EVER!! Did Earnhardt give up at Daytona in 1997 after his car FLIPPED?!? No. Did Benny Parsons give up at Rockingham after having the whole side of his car torn off? No. Kurt Busch's 2004 championship was a fluke. That was Jimmy Fenning's championship, Kurt just happened to be in the car. On a better note, this was probably the last time I'll get to see Bill Elliott race live. I am glad to say I took a few moments to appreciate this. Although I was never a die hard Awesome Bill fan, I always appreciated him and have a huge amount of respect for what he accomplished in this sport and his incredible classiness. He reflected on this sport so well. With young punks on the horizon like Scott Speed, Denny Hamlin, and the Busch Brothers, he will be missed. But I took a few moments to watch his car go around the track, even though he was hopelessly out of contention in the Wood Brothers jalopy, and appreciate watching Awesome Bill for the last time live. We'll miss ya! 24. While he may give Petty and Earnhardt a run for their money with most championships he will _NOT_ beat Richard Petty's 200 wins. That record will likely NEVER be broken. Not enough races in a season, and the competition is much better than it was during Petty Enterprises heyday. Sorry, just not gonna happen. Even if he were to be a consistent winner until he's 50 he'd have to average almost 10 wins a season. 27. Back in the 60's and 70's when production sheet metal was required, it was a common practice (Smokey Yunick was probably the first), since it was the only way to modify the production parts. Today, with all the parts fabricated specifically for racing, anyone with sense would just start with thinner steel. 42.
