Great race for Ragan and AJ! Definitely gonna watch out for them net season (hopefully AJ gets a full-time ride!) Pleased to see Carl win! 2. I'm not a fan of the 48 team, but I respect the way they continue to go for it rather than play it safe. But big time kudos to Carl for that pass on the outside of Denny at the end. I wish he hadn't have had that mechanical issue at Charlotte. It would be awesome to see those two teams be in a close points battle down the stretch because neither will ever stroke for points, but it is all Johnson's now. But as far as the race itself goes, it was a typical COT race on a 1.5 miler: a clunker. Almost zero racing. I know it wasn't great with the old car, but it wasn't this bad. You can blame the tires all you want, but with this new car, it just ain't happening. And NASCAR says that no rule changes will happen next year. that is a shame. Another year like this one. I'm already dreading next year, and this one isn't even over yet. For someone like me that has been obsessed with NASCAR since he was six years old, that is saying something. Funny thing though, Tony Stewart finished 2nd in the spring here and completely ripped GoodYear. They changed the tire and he was totally out to lunch. I bet he feels stupid. 3. The top two from this race were the opposite of last year's fall Atlanta race. - Proof that NA$CAR's Cha$e fails miserably is the fact that the points battle is much tighter using the old system. - AJ beats both of his Dodge teammates as well as his former teammate and the loser who replaced him for the second week in a row. AJ has too much talent to not have a ride for next year yet and he's putting Reed to shome. - Montoya ran in the top 10 the whole race, and got caught up in a wreck and Waltrip ran well to but had tire problems. 4. He came into Atlanta Swept the weekend and let Jimmie Johnson know that the Roush boys are gonna give him a run all the way to Homestead. And now we head to Texas next week where Edwards beat 2nd place Johnson under Green-White-Checker conditions earlier this year. It's a shame that Edwards has 7 wins to Johnson's 6 ,16 top 5's to Johnson's 14, and 24 top 10's to Johnson's 21. Who should be at the top of the points standings? It would be bitter sweet that Edwards come back even after a 100 point penalty, and capture the Championship? Now don't you Hendrick fans start saying that a cheater should not be a Champion, cuse those Hendrick boys have not had a championship season where they have not been convicted of cheating. Least we not forget that Johnson overcame a 100 point $100,000.00 penalty for cheating last year to came back and get the trophy. So if we live in glass houses we should not cast stones. So stay tuned to the final three races. What may be interesting is Homestead where niether Edwards or Johnson has a victory? 5. Juan Pablo Montoya had a great run before problems happened with the 42 team. Right now it looks like Red bull made a big mistake replacing A.J. Allmendinger with Scott Speed. Scott Speed is being rushed into cup. He is underperforming in the 84 car. Scott lacks stock car experience. I think that is his biggest problem right now. I think he looks lost in the car. He doesn't wreck, but finshing 30th or worse in his two starts in not a good sign considering how good A. J. did in the same ride. A.J. did a great job today. The 10 car didn't have back to back top 15 finished before today all season long. He deserves a good cup ride. 8. petty43 posted: 10.26.2008 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) amazing job from jimmie and crew chief chad knauss to finish a close second after being 12th with 10 laps to go. Carl was so surprised to find out jimmie finished 2nd in his post race interview, it was priceless, he must be so frustrated. but he did win both races and gain some ground in both series. in his 1000th nascar race waltip caused 3 cautions i believe. juan pablo found out again how hard it is to race 500 miles instead of 200, and AJ got a decent finish with a bad team. it is starting to look like kenseth and gordon will go winless this year. who saw that one coming. pretty boring race again and so far this has been the least interesting chase for the cup. look for jimmie to finish top 10 at texas and then win phoenix and clinch the cup there. o yes and kyle busch is officially eliminated mathematically. but really so is everyone unless jimmie has a 30th place or worse finish. 9. I'm a huge Carl Edwards fan and I tell you he impresses me more and more. He has 14 wins in 11 starts which is pretty good to say the least. He's putting a lot of other drivers to shame. I'm disappointed in Dale Jr. I thought he would do better than 11th. 11. petty43 posted: 10.26.2008 - 10:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) chevy now has a 1 point lead over toyota for manufactures cup, in case anybody cares. i hope chevy wins it. 12. With 3 races left, the #47 is only 80 points back from the #84 in owner points. I think there is a realistic chance that the #47 can reach 35th spot by the end of the year, meaning that Marcos Ambrose would become the first ever Australian to race in the Daytona 500. 13. Anonymous posted: 10.26.2008 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also this is the last fall race for Atlanta, because apparently California's record for putting on boring races means they get a Cha$e date and Atlanta gets moved to Labor Day weekend. Talladega will be in this slot next year, meaning whoever has a bad race there only has 3 races to recover. This is another stupid part of the Chase, the fact that they keep changing the tracks, once again showing how incon$i$tent NA$CAR is. 14. I wonder if Hendrick is starting to consider pulling the plug on Eury Jr. A great comeback for Jimmie Johnson. It shows once more how good this 48 team really is. Great win for Carl Edwards, he deserved this one. 15. RE61 posted: 10.27.2008 - 7:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kit for once I can appreciate what you have to say. It's pretty funny how everybody jumped the gun and said Kyle Busch is the best driver to race in a long time and yet when the pressure is really on neither him or his team are performing like champions. I also agree with DaleSrFanForever, the racing is horrible. I feel bad for whoever has paid to go see some of the races this year. There have been some decent ones this year but overall they lack any racing. I feel like I am watching F1, maybe they should just put a two hour time limit on the races until they figure this new car out instead of wasting an entire afternoon. If you want to see real racing for the most part watch the truck series, there may be a lot of has beens or never will be's but at least it's racing. 16. bigmike 90 posted: 10.27.2008 - 10:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) good run for juan pablo montoya had a top 5 finish until his late race wreck. looked like carl was gonna pick up lot more points on jimmie until the final restart when he came from 8th to 2nd on the final restart. John Royal posted: 10.27.2008 - 11:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) petty43, I think that hows NASCAR is today nobody (fans I mean) really cares about manufacturer points. Those points had some meaning when these NASCAR vehicles looked like cars. --- You know the racing is really bad when you starting to convince yourself that the shitty racing you watch is not that bad: "there was a pass I saw it - this could be worse - maybe something happens next - something always happens - this driver has a good car and comes from back of the pack and wins it all". NOT. With COT NASCAR did the same thing which once killed Formula One. Made cars harder to drive bumber to bumber, thus making overtaking much harder. I am 100% convinced that all the good things in form of professional auto racing eventually becomes shit. That has happened to everything and every series in some way. That is just something which is inevitable. NASCAR was one of the last dinosaurs (in a good way) to battle against global autoracing depression, but even that has pretty much gone now. Usually I hear people saying that things change and that is normal and you shouldn't whine about how things were better in the past. I agree, change is always normal thing, but I don't understand why change has to be always bad thing? Lets take example - Alan Kulwicki's championship. In 1960's that would not been a big thing to win championship and be a one car driver/owner at the same time. In 1992 that was a very big deal when Kulwicki did it. Ricky Rudd had maybe the best opportunity after that, but I am sure that NO ONE excepts anybody to do that ever again. Today, somebody one car team owner/driver winning race? - It is big deal if somebody other than GIBBS, ROUSH, HENDRICK driver wins a race!! Not to talk about races being overall boring, cars looking boring and even stupid (COT or crooked 2006-07 old cars...), tracks being boring (dates are been given to shitty tracks and good tracks gone or rebuild into shit - Atlanta, Bristol), drivers being boring and commercial puppets. I'm not surprised about this progress of the sport, but yes, as a true hearted fan I am very saddened about it. When Formula One screwed it's own series up, I searched for better racing and NASCAR was the right answer. And now the NASCAR is doing exactly what Formula One did. But I am not leaving this sinking ship because I love everything about NASCAR more than I could ever love anything in autoracing. I love it like I'd love my handicapped child. Well... thats about all it for now. 18. DaleSrFanForever posted: 10.27.2008 - 12:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Echoing what everyone else had said, a great run for Almendinger. These last two weeks are by far the best that #10 car has looked all year. I bet they wish they had hired AJ for next year instead of Reed. And like you guys said, huge mistake putting Scott Speed in there. The 84 team is back at square one now. I also agree with what is being said about the Chase. From the stupid date changes (Cali won't attract any more fans in October) to the fact Carl would be much closer the old way, it was just a horrible idea. They fixed something that wasn't broke, and made it worse. They needed to park the 55 car and make them put the quarter panel on correctly instead of letting them put tape on an entire section of the car which never goes slower than 155 MPH under green conditions. They should have known better. 19. DaleSrFanForever posted: 10.27.2008 - 4:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That is a great post John Royal. I agree with everything you said. It has become little more than a Hendrick, Roush, and Gibbs show. It seems like every single week cars from those three teams are fighting for the win (Edwards, Johnson, and Hamlin this week) with RCR occasionally stepping up to contend for more than a 7th place finish, but not very often. They are the only three who can keep it going week after week. Other teams rise up briefly, but then fall back. Look at Kasey Kahne. they looked lost at the first of the year, had that one really good stretch where they swept Charlotte and dominated Pocono, and have looked lost again ever since. They now look like they will have to merge with BDR to survive. DEI showed signs of life last summer with Truex, but now appear on the brink of folding or merging. It is just so monotonous. But like you, I will continue to watch. I hate it when people say stuff like "if you hate it so much, then why don't you quit watching it". Because NASCAR is what I watch. I've watched it regularly since I was 5 years old. In 1990, at the age of six, I went to my first Winston Cup race at North Wilkesboro and have been to well over 50 Cup events since. For me, it is a tradition that is hard to break. But that is the difference between real fans and the bandwagon fans that NASCAR wants so badly for some reason. If I don't like the direction the sport is taking, and I don't, then I just complain about it and keep watching. Bandwagon fans find something else to do, and it hurts NASCAR's attendance and TV ratings. Yet NASCAR continues to crap on us traditionalists (funny to call a 24 year old a "traditionalist". That should tell you something about this sport). It is wrong and it will cost them. The problem is that I am finding it harder and harder to stay attatched. John, you compare it to loving a child, I compare it to a relationship. Right now, I just want this season to be over. I don't want to watch anymore races this year, but as long as they are on TV, I feel like I have to. I am stuck in a bad relationship. I don't like her right now, and she keeps trying to distance herself from me. I am waiting for her to quit treating me so bad and go back to loving me the way she did in the beginning. Unfortunately, I have been in real life relationships like this before, and it NEVER turns around. I am afraid this one won't turn around either. 20. They had been a sponsor since they sponsored Eddie Bierschwale in the 1986 Daytona 500. After 18 years as the sponsor of the Morgan-McClure #4, the long-time partner left. In that 18 year span, they won 7 races with Ernie Irvan, including the 1991 Daytona 500, 6 races with Sterling Marlin, including back-to-back Daytona 500s in 1994-95, and 1 more race with Bobby Hamilton at Martinsville in 1998. After 2003, they left for Doug Bawel's #77 team for 2004, with Brendan Gaughan, and Travis Kapil in 2005, before disappearing in 2006, only to re-emerge on a limited basis with Ryan Newman in 2007-08. I loved the Mike Skinner #4 in NASCAR Thunder 2004, and it will always be one of my favorites. That scheme was easily one of the most iconic from the 90s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
