Congrats to the #2 team for a dominant car and to Kurt for running right next to the wall all day and only hitting it a few times. Mark Martin's horrendous luck continues. They really can't afford any more bad races if they are to make the cha$e. Considering that there are 22 races still left before the cutoff, good luck with that. We may never see a feel good champion again. Sam Hornish tries his best to wreck for 200 laps and finally accomplishes the job while taking out Awesome Bill in front of his home state Georgia fans. Maybe after the race he'll go up to Bill's museum in Dawsonville and take a leak on the side of that old #9 Coors T-Bird. I don't know who that crew member was that all but went on the race track- UNDER GREEN- to get that tire, but he needs to be banned from the race track for a while. That was just about stupid. 5. Kurt led more laps in this race than he did all year and this is the most laps anyone has led on the current Atlanta configuration. He now has more wins than Dale Jr. and Kenseth. Two major heartbreakers in this race. First Bill Elliott got wrecked by Sideways Sam for the second straight Atlanta race and Mark Martin has bad luck for the third week in a row and is almost out of the top 35. Another great run for Gilliland. He is higher in the points than both Menard and Kvapil. 6. dUDE gUY posted: 03.08.2009 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a dominant win by Kurt Busch, leading 234 of 330 laps! Funny how everyone made a stink about it in 2007, yet no one even mentions it today. I must say I've lost all hope in NASCAR returning to its 1990s form. The race was a classic snoozefest. Every time the field settled into a run the caution would come out for some rather benign reason. The only eventful occurance other than the last ten laps was the pit road debacle, which canned most driver's chances of competing for a win, and Sam I Am completely forgetting how to drive a race car. It gets to the point where 1.5 mile races are just a repeat of the one before, with the occaisional different winner. Though I'm sure because of the finish this 4/10 race will be chalked up as "one of those classic atlanta races" 8. This is the first time Penske won Atlanta under the new configuration. Penske usually doesn't win at 1 1/2 mile tracks without fuel mileage. Mark Martin has terrible luck this year. My other thoughts are: 1.) The tire changer of 47 shouldn't be allowed on the race track again for being a safety hazard under green. 2.) Sideways Sam needs to go back to racing Indy cars. 3.) Dale Jr and his team needs to be taken to the woodshed after today's race by Rick Hendrick. Dale Jr. threatening to hit members with his team with hammers is out of line. His pit crew made mistakes today, but that is no excuse for the way he acted. His team had to put up with Dale Jr's mistakes in the first 3 races. Dale Jr. should do the same. 4.) Red Bull racing screwed with Scott Speed. 5.) David Gilliland deserves to be on a well funded team after what he did for the last 2 weeks instead of Paul Menard. 13. But, his team needs a change. The crew chief needs to go and Jr needs to step up. The equipment isn't the problem. Clint Bowyer is 2nd in points with a new team while Casey Mears makes the 07 team a field filler. As for Kurt's backwards victory lap: that was pretty retarded but it made me laugh because it made me remember a funny story. When I was in high school I had a friend, nice guy but not the sharpest knife in the drawer, who one day decided he would drive down a road in reverse just for the heck of it. So of course he ended up in a ditch and had to call a wrecker to get him out. When a police officer showed up to see what was going on, my friend told the cop he was backing out of his driveway and the throttle hung. The officer looked at him and said "I smell shit!" So, even though I don't like Kurt, hopefully he will continue doing reverse laps in honor of my buddy. 23. 18fan posted: 03.09.2009 - 2:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bliss, Blaney, and maybe Nemechek (Junior had the same problem at Homestead) start-and-parked. I heard NASCAR is looking into discouraging start-and-parking by taking harder looks into what caused the cars to fall out of the race. They are not going to change anything in the Trucks or Nationwide Series. That's good, because guys like Riggs and Mayfield, who would run the whole race, miss the race when the teams like Blaney, Bliss, and Nemechek set up their cars to run fast for one lap and then make their cars unable to run the whole race. 24. Joey Logano is an 18 year old kid...some of these guys have been racing longer than he has lived. He is doing exactly what he needs to do right now running laps and learning the equipment...he was never expected to compete this year. During some races him and Tony Eury Jr. act like they're in a flag football game. "And, people are saying he is done after four races. Wow, just wow. Some of his better tracks are coming up." And what did he do last year in a Hendrick car? This is after 40 races in a Hendrick car. It's becoming apparent that equipment isn't the issue. "You are all being harsh on Joey Logano and even Scott Speed. They are rookies with very very very little racing experience." Well, then why is Logano even in a Cup car if he has "very, very, very little racing experience?" He was rushed in way too fast. "I dunno what Childress was thinking" He wasn't. I'm mean, anybody could win a major national touring series race in only their second start, and it would be a cake walk to be the first American driver in F1 in a dozen years, would it not? Putting sarcasm aside, I do think that both drivers have talent, but were probably pushed to Cup way too soon. That doesn't mean they'll suck forever, but I do expect a lot of growing pains for both drivers. Look at today's winner as a great example. Busch didn't even spend a year in the Truck Series before being called up to Cup. He struggled a great deal his rookie year. But, he figured out what it took to make it, and he's got a championship for it. Everybody wanted to fire Allmendinger and Ragan when they first started. Patience will be the key. He could have whipped ass in those series, gained momentum, and carried it over to Cup. Instead he has been thrown into a sink or swim situation. Of course he should have known better himself. "Busch didn't even spend a year in the Truck Series before being called up to Cup." Kurt Busch wasn't 18 when he started racing in Cup AND he at least ran a full season of Trucks. Still, his 2001 Cup season pretty much sucked. You can't really compare drivers like that anyway because their needs are different. 38. True, but remember that in 2001 Kurt's teammates sucked too, and he was paired with what was essentially an average team, not a championship caliber team that Moldy bread has. So far him and Scott Slow are getting Regan Smith and Sideways Sam results with equipment that is 100 times better. I hope they boot Moldy Bread out of the car at the end of the year and put in someone more deserving. 39. He has actually got off to a much worse start than he did last year. The first half of last year they were fast everywhere but couldn't make adjustments as the race went on because Dale Jr and Tony Jr are having a personal battle to see who can act the most immature over the radio during a race with millions and millions of dollars and a spot in history at stake. This year they haven't been competitive at any point, and Dale seems to be regressing as far as making mistakes. That is saying something considering the pure bulk of mistakes he has made in the past, even during his successful seasons (Charlotte, Chicago, Dover in '03, Talladega, Atlanta, Homestead in '04, Martinsville in '06). Something needs to give. Dale has the talent, but he obviously doesn't give a shit. He needs someone to put the fear of God into him, like his Dad used to. Because his clock is running out. He is getting older and he is getting more and more burned out by the minute. With the demands on the current Cup drivers, 40 is the new 50. 40. Yes, I mentioned that in my previous post, I agree with that statement. Here's my point: there is a difference between saying someone was put in Cup way too soon (which, again, is a valid point), and saying that they suck as a driver, and that they should be fired. It 4 races in to a 36 race season. I mentioned Kurt Busch because there were many of the same opinions of him that people now have of Logano and Speed. Busch was only 22 when he debuted in Cup. Busch ran 22 races in CTS before going into Cup. There's an rpm2nite (RIP) interview with Kurt Busch from 200 on Youtube. When asked about his future, Kurt said Cup was "7 or 8 years down the line". While Roush did struggle in 2001, Busch's season was a major letdown. Martin, Burton, and Kenseth finished in the top 15 in final driver standings, while Busch ended up 27th, even missing a race. Looking at Logano and Speed: Logano had about 15 Busch starts, and Speed had one ARCA season and some Truck starts. Of course, you can't directly compare those two drivers to Kurt, but they have similar circumstances. BTW folks, "Moldy Bread" and "Scott Slow" are about as witty as a Larry the Cable Guy joke. 41. Phoenix Racing didn't park from 2005-2008 very much. Hopefully this isn't a repeat of 2004 when they would barely run 10 laps and park the car. At least Prism Motorsports, the sister team the the pathetic MSRP Motorsports, finished the Daytona 500. Even Morgan Shepard, who has start-and-parked for years, is finishing races in the Nationwide Series. Start-and-parkers basically mean there are only 38-40 cars in the race that actually try to win. He wouldn't dream of saying some of the things he says to Tony Jr to Tony Sr. He would have to just stay focused on the car. Rick is trying too much to be the kind, gentle father figure. That doesn't work with Dale Jr. He needs to scare him. But that is another problem: what can he really do to him? If he fires him, Dale will be scooped up in about a nanosecond by somebody wanting that sponsorship money. It is all up to Dale Jr. He can be as good as he wants to be in HMS equipment. 57. Dale Jr. might stay as untapped potential but there is no way he could ever be another Waltrip. At least Dale Jr. has talent." Yeap, but it's untapped talent though.Like DSFF said, some one needs to put a new fire under his butt so he can get his head back in the game cause the longer he plays around, the further behind JJ,Carl,Kyle, and Jeff Gordon he'll fall cause.Since it seems unlikely that Rick is willing to do that,I don't think there's anyone else who can.Tony Eury Sr. kept him motivated, but I doubt he's gonna want to come back to the cup series. 58. austin posted: 11.23.2010 - 6:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gordon finishes 2nd for a second time in 2009. 59. Bliss, making his first Cup start since last fall's Tums QuikPak 500 at Martinsville, squeezed his way into Sunday's field with a speed of 182.645 mph, just enough to beat four "go-or-go-home" drivers and start 43rd. The race marked the first start of the season for his team, Phoenix Racing, which had missed the first three races of the season with drivers Brad Keselowski and Sterling Marlin. In the race, Bliss remained near the back, but was up to 3rd during the second caution on lap 12 when he stayed out an extra lap with Joe Nemechek and Dave Blaney. However, on lap 21, not long after the race restarted from that caution, Bliss was on pit road, then behind the wall with an overheating problem. The race was Bliss' first last-place finish since the 2000 UAW-GM Quality 500 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, when a crash on lap 5 put his #27 Viagra Pontiac out of the race. His only other last-place finish took place with that same Eel River Racing team at Dover two weeks before the race. It was the first last-place finish for both the #09 and Phoenix Racing since Sterling Marlin crashed out of last summer's Sharpie 500 at Bristol. 2009 RANKINGS 1st) Mike Bliss, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Joe Nemechek (1) Visit http://brockbeard.blogspot.com/ for more. 63.
