The Dinger gets to laugh even louder this week at the fact that Scott Slow couldn't live up to his last name during qualifying. Feel stupid yet, Red Bull? You should. Also worth mentioning is that the Aaron's Dream Machine car which got smashed to smithereens last year sat on the pole this time with the Reut driving. I am so happy to see him continue to remain in the top 12 in points. And Jeff Gordon finally breaks his winless streak, after finishing dead last in this race last year. Menard got a rare lead lap finish, and Hornish and Stremme both finished on the lead lap despite spinning and hitting the wall separately. And Gilliland continues to impress driving the 71 car despite not having sponsorship. 3. Dodge posted: 04.05.2009 - 7:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gordon was lucky that Carl's crew screwed up. Mark is continuing a great comeback after a bad steak of luck starting out the year. Brad Keselowski didn't have a bad day. Paul Menard had a surprising good day today with it being his best finish of the year. Edward's pit Crew and Kenesth's pit crew let them down today. Scott Speed misses another race. Good run by David Reutimann. All I have to say about the 88 team is there was a 3 ring circus out there today. That team made too many mistakes today. Thankfully I am not an owner in Nascar. I would fire everyone on that team today. Here were the issue today: 1.) Missing lug nuts. 2.) Jr.'s pit sign was on the ground before he pitted to put the missing lug nuts on. 3.) Eury gave his cousin two tires. Jr. hit the well because his tires were losing grip after a while. The 83 team made the same mistake as the 88 team did and those lost ground. What happened to RCR today besides Jeff Burton finishing in the top 10? If Martin Truex, Jr.'s contract stated he could leave if doesn't have two teammates, he needs to go to the 07 team. It sounds like the 8 team will be gone after today's race. That means EGR will be trouble with Bass Pro Shops would leaving the 1 team also. It is stated in the contract that the 1 sponsor could leave if Truex doesn't have at least 2 teammates. Mears being gone would solve one of RCR's problems. 5. He didn't qualify well, but fought his way back up to finish in the top ten. The 88 team is a circus. Otherwise, great day for Hendrick. Bad day for RCR. Harvick ran in the 30's most of the day before finishing 27th. Kyle's temper cost him. Swerving to hit Andretti out of frustration and flattening his own tire put him behind. David Ragan had a top 5 run going until his engine overheated. Elliot Sadler scores another 30 something finish. 9. The 88 team made complete fools of themselves out there. Some one seriously needs to put the fear of God into 'em(espeically Dale Jr.)otherwise the 88 will continue to be the laughing stock of Hendrick Motorsports. DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.06.2009 - 12:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) That was a boring race. When you combine the COT with these 1.5 mile quad-oval tracks, the result is barely watchable. TMS needs to be thanking their lucky stars Gordon broke his winless drought in this race, it takes attention off the fact that this race sucked a big one. Joey Logano looks totally lost out there. If the #8 team shuts down, they need to put Truex in that car. The EGR organization is a joke (althought Montoya did alright today) and Martin deserves better. I think it would be a perfect fit. Its been mentioned before, but I'm gonna pile on here. Scott Speed misses the race while The Dinger is 20th in points with a team put together about one month before the season started. Still think NASCAR is easy Scott, you feminine jackass? Casey Mears has taken a Top 10 team and turned it into a backmarker. And Elliott Sadler continues to prove RPM right for trying to can him in the off season. Those two need to step aside for some new blood or some old proven blood. Kyle Busch totally trashes his team for their mistakes then goes out today and takes himself out of contention with a stupid move. The shame of it is that he was driving a retro Interstate Batteries paint scheme to honor Bobby Labonte. Kyle Busch should NEVER EVER EVER EVER be tied to classy Bobby Labonte in any way, shape, or form. 19. Bronco posted: 04.06.2009 - 4:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "That was a boring race." I actually thought it was a good race, although I only saw bits and pieces of it. This race had more lead changes than any other race this season and no driver really dominated. How much does Moldy Bread suck? Consider this. Last year after seven races Hornish had 502 points despite not having any stock car experience. Regan Smith had 496 points while driving a very underfunded car. Moldy Bread on the other hand only has 510 points despite driving for a top notch team. I wonder how much longer they're going to continue this disastrous experiment before they realize he's not their guy. Looks like Dale Jr's slow start to the season continues. Consider this. This is the deepest he's gone into a season without a top 5, he hasn't qualified in the top 10 even once, and he qualified 20th for this race when his worst start previously was 15th. Last year he was fast as hell during the early part of the season but didn't win. This year he hasn't shown any speed at all It seems like every week his pit crew, his crew chief or Dale Jr himself makes a silly mistake, they never put it all together. 20. Hmm, I really don't understand your comments. First you complain about NAPA sponsoring Waltrip because of his on track performance. And now you're also complaining about M&Ms and Miller Lite sponsoring the Busch brothers despite the fact that they win races all the time and are in the top 10 in points. Can you say contradiction? Racing is all about winning, and as long as they keep doing that I dont know how anyone could not sponsor them. New14&88Fan, Ok so Kurt got a little mad, so what? Yes, on track performance should be a prerequisite for sponsorship, but you should also not have a driver that is almost universally hated. Drivers who don't pitch childish fits every single time things don't go their way. If we acted like that in our lines of work, we would get fired. But at the same time "loveable" drivers who win 4 restrictor plate races in over 700 starts shouldn't get sponsorship either. 29. Would you rather sponsor someone a nice guy like Casey Mears who doesn't win races, or someone like Kurt Busch, who's a proven winner? "If we acted like that in our lines of work, we would get fired." True, but that's because most of us are expendable in our lines of work, while a talented driver isn't. You think Kurt or Kyle are going to go lose their rides because of their behaviour? And speaking of losing rides, it sucks that the 8 car and Almirola are pretty much done after this race. There is no need for teams spending tens of millions of dollars per year to race when the cars are not going any faster on the track than they did 20 years ago. Hell, I think Alan Kulwicki won a championship only spending a few million AT MOST. And the racing was better back then! Because the sponsors have to shell out so much money now, they want more for their dollar than just race results. They want the drivers to do their marketing for them. This is why unsuccessful drivers like Waltrip are still in the show: they are paid to promote products, not race to win. 34. "And speaking of losing rides, it sucks that the 8 car and Almirola are pretty much done after this race. Almirola has potential, a lot more than someone like Moldy Bread..." DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.09.2009 - 9:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You are right Kit. The result is that the drivers have become prima donnas. They have somebody kissing their ass at every turn and doing everything for them, they expect the whole world to defer to them the same way, and when they don't, they pout like children. You mentioned Alan Kulwicki, if the drivers today had to try to make it the way he did, they would shit their pants. Imagine the Busch Brothers or Harvick or Stewart trying to build a CUP SERIES team from the ground up as a no name trying to attract sponsorship and hire people to go racing. He didn't get to make a name for himself in somebody else's organization and make himself a brand name, like Stewart. He was a nobody, and still made it work. The drivers today just couldn't handle it. 37. Bronco posted: 04.09.2009 - 10:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To add a bit more about Almirola, I think it sucks how Mark Martin cherry picked his schedule for the past two years, choosing all the big money races (Daytona 500, Coke 600, Brickyard 400) while Almirola and Smith had to fight for whatever was left. And now when it's time for them to have fulltime rides, there's basically nothing left. The whole part time schedule idea is ridiculous. Either run the whole schedule or retire, or go drive for a part time team like the 21 or 78. I hope Mark doesn't do the same thing in 2010. "The result is that the drivers have become prima donnas. " True, but thankfully we have guys like Labonte, Reutimann and Ambrose who just focus on racing and nothing else. These are guys who earned their way in through hard work and talent. Anonymous posted: 04.09.2009 - 11:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kit, A small part of the cost to run a race team is caused by the salary of a driver. Ricky Craven said sometime last month on a Yahoo video that there is no such as thing as an overrated driver, but Overpaid drivers. Craven mentioned in that video that salaries are getting out of hand for drivers. He said they should paid based on Craven claimed there were cup drivers that are making at least a million dollars a year and never won a race. Juan Pablo Montoya made over 6 million dollars a year in annual salary according to 2008 Forbes article. It is found at http://www.forbes.com/2008/06/11/top-earning-nascar-biz-cz_ps_0611topearningdrivers.html . Remember the highest paid 2 driver in 2007 were Jeff Gordon andDale Jr. In 2008 Dale JR. was the highest paid driver according a Forbes article. The source is http://www.forbes.com/2009/02/09/highest-paid-drivers-business-sports-nascar09_0209_drivers.html . According that article 10 cup drivers are making at least 5 million dollars in Salary including 4 that signed a contract for 5 million dollars a year. Kyle Busch and and teammate Denny Hamlin have $10 million annual guarantees in their contracts. Think some of you can determine what drivers are overpaid. The salary before merchandise is a problem in Nascar. If a driver like Kyle Busch is getting guaranteed 10 million dollars a years, think what the salary of a driver will be in the future. The bigger problem right now is Hamlin. He is not getting the biggest bang for your buck on the race track for wins. After his rookie year, he got 1 win each year. How does a driver with 4 career wins get a guaranteed 10 million dollars a year? Hamlin is a good driver and has made every chance since he became a full time driver. The question is he worth the guarantee money that he is making though? Gibbs gave Hamlin and Kyle Busch a lot of money based on potential. Kyle has lived up to his deal based on the amount of wins he already has with Gibbs. Dale Jr.'s overpaid, but it's more on endorsements and licensing royalties. His guaranteed money on his contract is less than Hamlin is in salary without mentioning endorsements and licensing royalties. Dale Jr.'s salary and race earnings last year was 12 million dollars. He got almost 6.5 million dollars on salary if my math is correct. He made almost 5.5 million dollars on race earnings in 2008. The way to stop the guarantee money madness in cup to make the salary before endorsements and licensing royalties performance based. 40. On Friday, Blaney squeezed himself into the Texas field with a speed of 186.111 mph. Blaney's lap time was just enough for Blaney to beat five 'go-or-go-homers' with Joe Nemechek, the fastest of them, missing Blaney's time by just 12 thousandths of a second. Blaney started 43rd on Sunday, but the long green-flag run at the beginning of the race taxed his car's equipment. The #66 made at least three green-flag stops in the first 45 laps and, after completing just 48 laps, fell out of the race with a brake problem. For both Blaney and team, it was their second last-place finish in three races.
