Joey got lapped from going so slow and got the lucky dog, and gambled. He has run like crap all year, only to be bailed out by Zippy. His whole racing career he has had the best cars money could buy. He has never had to struggle in lesser equipment. He hasn't had to earn anything. I'm just totally disgusted right now. Kyle Busch causes a huge crash. Dale Jr spins his tires, Truex checks up, and Kyle just runs right through him taking out a lot of cars. I like the TNT crew, but they were dead wrong about that one. Kyle turned him, and only then did Martin go across Kyle's hood. That wasn't just a racin' deal. It was yet another case of Kyle having no respect for anyone on the race track. and then they pulled the "all you Kyle haters" crap. this isn't blind hate. we didn't just randomly decide to dislike Kyle. We have legitimate reasons for feeling this way. I like the double file restart, but they need to figure out this wave around crap. Nobody will ever go a lap down now, especially on the shorter tracks. They just don't pit, go around, and wait for another caution to fall 20 laps later. On a positive note, I'd like to give a shout out to all the fans in New England. They always pack that place, even when they ran that race the Friday after Thanksgiving. And now, with the economy in the shitter, they still packed it. And a shout out to Sideways Sam. He looks like he is starting to get it. 3. Just another race that proves the clowns are more concerned with the "Show" and not the race. All the attention from a 19-year old rookie winning his first incomplete race is definetly better than Jeff, Kurt and Tony locking horns to the run for the finish. What a lackluster and boring finish. Don't even bother to wait it out. "Oh, it looks like its going to keep downpouring." No! Wrong! Bad weather is quite unpredictable. A short break could have occurred to finish the last few miles. What a complete joke! Let's just take the easy way out and give to win to driver with a crack of fuel left. That decision was absolute insanity. ----- Gordon and Stewart continue to compile a ton of runner-up finishes this year. 8. Anonymous posted: 06.28.2009 - 8:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have to give credit to Joey's Crew Chief. Joey was lucky that he didn't ran out of fuel like Ryan Newman did. Sam Hornish Jr. had a great run all day. I have to admit that Dale Jr. was doing better than his finish stated and I am no Jr. fan. His team wasn't using the same pit strategy as the 20 team and some other teams did. Jr.'s car was in the top 10 most of the day. Dale Jr.'s Crew chief was right for making the call, Most teams that pit a couple cautions after the 88 team did was forced to pit because the rain didn't come yet. Dale did made a mistake by spinning the tires. He is partly responsible for the big wreck that took Truex out. 9. I know fans usually pack the stands, but I have to say I've never really cared for New Hampshire. I also don't see it as a good place to open a hyped up thing like the cha$e. "His whole racing career he has had the best cars money could buy. He has never had to struggle in lesser equipment. He hasn't had to earn anything. I'm just totally disgusted right now." I totally agree. Watch, tomorrow all the racing pundits will shower all this praise on him, as if he's the second coming of Tim Richmond. I don't mean to take anything away from him, but I never saw what was so special about him for him to get all the praise and hype that he has. To me he's no more talented than Brian Scott, Stephen Leicht, Erik Darnell, Justin Allgaier or any of the other young drivers trying to establish a name for themselves. It's just that he has always the best cars and equipment money could buy. Harvick is now 27th in points with an 87 race winless streak on his shoulders. I used to hate the guy for all his cockiness, but after the racing gods humbled him the last few years, I actually feel sorry for him. Plus there's rumors that he might be losing his sponsorship this year. I have to say it breaks my heart to see the fact that Sideways Sam and Stale Bread have more top tens than Dale Jr. I pray for a dominating win at Daytona next week, but at this point I'll be happy with just a top ten. 10. It just irks me to no end when a completely undeserving driver wins a race. With the lucky dog, the wave around, and debris cautions, it seems like NASCAR wants to keep every freaking car on the lead lap, apparently for contrived entertainment value. And that leads to bullshit finishes like this one where an also-ran steals the win because NASCAR's welfare system kept him in the mix even though he proved throughout the race that he was not worthy. Anyone who's slow enough to get lapped under green does NOT deserve to win the race, period. As far as I'm concerned, David Reutimann and Joey Logano are still winless in Sprint Cup competition. 14. Congrats to Joey - his strategy was perfect and he really has been working hard to get a victory. Strategy deserves to win; it's just a shame because, yes, Jeff, Tony, and Kurt were going to have a whale of a duel. Excluding that, this was by far one of the best races NASCAR has put on this year. The double-file restarts finally really shook up the race and made for some really intense, heart-pounding action. Even the long runs were marked by pretty close quarters racing. I actually really like NHMS; it is hard to pass but I believe it is one of the better races in the Chase. 15. There is no way Joey won that vote. They could have kept racing until the end. I was at Martinsville last year and it rained the entire race, but they never threw a rain caution. As long as the cars keep running on the smaller tracks, it doesn't get wet. It was all to appease Home Depot, who has had to watch the Lowe's car dominate recently. "A win is a win. I remember Bill Elliot, in 1992, who drove like crap, was a lap down, caught a yellow after everyone pitted and won the race." Wow. Where to begin on this one. First of all, Bill has 4 other wins at Atlanta, and more than 40 other wins in Cup. He deserves to be called a winner (not to mention a champion and a legend) unlike Logano. He has run like pure crap in every race in which Cale Yarborough didn't give him a private tutoring lesson. Secondly, that was in the middle of him winning 4 races in a row. Joey hasn't finished on the lead lap in 4 races in a row. But most importantly, Bill wasn't kept in contention artificially by NASCAR like Logano was. That was 1992 and there were no lucky dogs, wave arounds, or debris cautions (unless somebody's bumper was laying right in the racing groove) back then. It wasn't a socialist sport back then. He had to earn his way into a spot to get lucky, unlike Logano. Plus, Bill had lost many races up to that point on strategy that he was in contention to win, unlike Logano. Though it wasn't a conventional win, it's kinda neat to see him take his first Sprint Cup win at his home track. Reutimann, Keselowski, Andretti and couple others gambled on the rain as well and also got some solid finishes. On the Lap 176 restart, Jr. spun his tires, which isn't that bad on it's own, but it caused Truex Jr. to swerve to try and avoid Jr's car. Unfortunately Truex got spun out by an over-eager Kyle Busch and then Truex gets rammed by Jeff Burton, who would have made a nice move on the inside if Truex hadn't been spun into his path by Kyle Busch. Oh well, that's racing I guess. Anyways, the ensuing chaos takes out five or six other cars, half of which could have used the good runs they were having at the time. I know that it was an accident, and I know that Kyle Busch generally does not mean to cause wrecks (though he does unintentionally cause a lot of them), but it still could have been avoided if Kyle Busch had been cautious on that restart and decided to pay a little more attention to what the cars around him were doing. Oh well, hopefully Truex, Burton, Vickers and Harvick (not a fan of the #29 driver, but he's had a horrible season this year) will do better in the upcoming weeks. Speaking of Kyle Busch, Kyle Busch is a trainwreck this year in Sprint Cup. Yeah, Kyle Busch is dominating the Nationwide series and runs superb in every Truck race Kyle Busch enters, but Kyle Busch's Sprint Cup season has been very up-and down. UP: Kyle Busch has won 3 races this year. DOWN: Kyle Busch has only scored three other top tens this year, one of those being a top five. So, that's a total of 3 wins, 4 top fives and 6 top tens in SEVENTEEN races this year for Kyle Busch. I could be wrong, but by the looks of it Kyle Busch is diverting most of Kyle Busch's energy and Kyle Busch's focus into the Nationwide and Truck series, and the resulting disaster is what you see driving that 18 car every Cup Race. I'd like to see Kyle Busch focus on the Cup Series - mainly because I really enjoy watching Kyle Busch wheel that 18 car in the Cup races when Kyle Busch's into it, but also because I enjoy, you know, seeing other people in other series winning. Just a thought. Aaaanyways, Kyle Busch is an impressive driver, and watching Kyle Busch's unique style of racing really adds some excitement to the Cup Series. I just wish I could watch Kyle Busch go all out and race the other Cup guys on a regular basis. I doubt that will happen, as Kyle Busch insists upon wearing himself out every weekend dominating all the Nationwide and Truck races Kyle Busch enters, just to end up being very hit-and-miss in the Cup series. I'll be honest and say that I don't like Kyle Busch as a person very much, but I honestly miss the excitement I had in '08 watching Kyle Busch tear it up on the Sprint Cup circuit weekend after weekend. Kyle Busch was so exciting to watch in '08, but this year it's all about how great Kyle Busch is in the Nationwide and Truck series, while he falters in his Cup car. Despite the lackluster finish and that somewhat scary lap 176 restart, I really enjoyed this race. There was a lot of great racing on the track, and my two favourite drivers (24 and 48) led over half of the race today and both had top ten finishes. A shoutout goes out to Sideways Sam Hornish, who did a damn fine job racing yesterday, running in the top 5 for awhile before finishing 8th, his fourth top ten this year. 47. All of Nascarâ??s ridicules rules specifically designed to inject manufactured excitement into the race came together to form the perfect storm. The Lucky Dog, wave by rule, and throwing a caution to bunch up the field after Joeyâ??s incident all played a major role in the end of this race. Iâ??m upset that the rain robbed us of a potentially great finish, but I could get over that if someone who actually ran somewhere near the front all day ended up in victory lane. Iâ??m not mad at Joey, Iâ??m furious with Nascar for creating all of these asinine rules that allow things like this to happen. The teams that rolled the dice never should have been on the lead lap and had the opportunity to do so. One other point I donâ??t think anyone has made yet is the start times of these races. If Nascar wasnâ??t so concerned about catering to the west coast viewers for an east coast race, both yesterdayâ??s and last yearâ??s races at new Hampshire would have finished before the rain ever came. I can think of many races in the 1990â??s (including the 1998 Daytona 500) that would have been rained shorted if Nascar had the same ridicules start time policy it has now. 53. Matt G posted: 06.29.2009 - 8:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One other thing. While Iâ??m not happy that Joey Logano won this race, I do believe that he is on his way to becoming a contender in the Cup series. It is important to remember that he is a 19 year old who has only competed in 20 cup races and was rushed into a type of car he had never been in when Stewart departed last year. (Gibbs did not put Logano in this position because he thought he was ready; he did it because Stewart left him with no other options.) The other thing Logano has working against him is Nascarâ??s no testing policy. That track time is invaluable to rookies. Taking all of this into consideration, Logano has shown remarkable improvement this season. After 7 races, Logano had 6 finishes outside the top 25, and was 35th in points (325 points out of the chase). In the last 10 races, Logano has finished in the top 25 every single week and has climbed from 35th to 21st in points (308 points out of the chase). While these numbers are not earth shattering, they do show that he is headed in the right direction. If you want to tell me Logano moved up because of the win, he gained 11 of those 14 positions before this race. In addition, the fact that he has gained 17 points on 12th place in the last 10 weeks shows that a 15th place finish in points is not out of the question; especially when Logano starts going back to tracks for a second time. All things considered, thatâ??s pretty solid for a 19 year old rookie. 54. Red posted: 06.29.2009 - 9:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Part of winning a race is strategy. If you cannot realize Reutimann at Charlotte and Logano at NHMS today was their strategy working out when all others failed." They only made these "strategy" moves because they were buried deep in the field and had nothing to lose. In the Coke 600, if Reutimann had been leading the race, you really think he'd have stayed out? Get real. Remember when Ryan Newman won all those races in 2003 by stretching his fuel during the final run? In many of those races, he was already the last car on the lead lap, so he could afford to top off his tank right before the restart. If he had actually been up front, he wouldn't have taken that gamble. "Geez, what did Logano ever do to you all? Yes, he's still not completely ready for Cup, but tell me you would deny the chance to drive the car previously driven by a 2-time champion. Let the kid enjoy his win!" Honestly, I have less of a problem with Logano winning than I do with NASCAR's idiotic rules allowing this sort of fluke victory to occur in the first place. 55. TV Networks are the ones that decided the times for the Nascar Races, not Nascar anymore. The stations care about TV ratings, not finishing a race because of weather like Fox's David Hill. If David Hill had his way, every race Fox covers is a night race. He admitted that earlier this year according to the Daly Planet website. David Hill also was responsible for Digger. 56. What Joey and Greg did was smart and if I was them I would have done the same thing. EVERY OTHER DRIVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN AND DIDN'T CAPITALIZE. Of course they didn't have the best car but they played the right strategy. Yes the Lucky Dog helped them a lot too but it helps out good drivers as well. Every driver was happy for Joey and I am too. I would have rather seen a three way battle for the lead too but that's not what happened so thats too damn bad for me and everyone else. So it's not like he took a terrible car and won with it at the end of the race. Plus fuel mileage is different than rain. Fuel mileage does take strategy, along with some skill on the part of the crew and the driver to do the math and save the fuel needed. I'm happy for Logano and think this will still be the first of many wins in his career. But I agree with everyone complaining about NASCAR rules. I missed the end of the race(had to quit shortly after his spin). I was shocked when I heard he won and figured it had to have been some fluke thing. Then I noticed he got 2 lucky dogs during the race. A win is a win and Joey should be happy with it. This really doesn't involve the weather, it's more about how NASCAR has been manipulating the outcome of the race. Logano fell off the lead lap TWICE during the race. NASCAR then moved the #20 back on the lead lap. The Lucky Dog rule has never been racing. I don't think drivers should be moved a further distance ahead on the race track just because NASCAR makes it so. That defeats the point of racing. That is a noticable pattern. I have one other one. Watkins Glen in 2002. He jumped the final restart by half a mile, but NASCAR let it go. The restart cone was on the front straightaway, and Tony took off right after the second to last turn, the left hander. This was the week after The Official Home Improvement Warehouse had terrible publicity after Tony punched a photographer. If they would have made that call, not only would Tony not have won, but Mark Martin would be the 2002 champion (this was before the cha$e). They black flagged Rusty at Martinsville once before for a restart way better than that one. 70. Bronco posted: 07.01.2009 - 4:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Are you kidding me Bronco? Brad Daugherty was a Busch Series and truck series owner back in starting in 1989 with Robert Pressley. Kevin Harvick even raced for him in the Truck series. He even built a car and was crew chief for Robert Pressley. Besides that, Brad even built stock cars back in back in the mid 1980's when he was in college. One year, the cars he built won 38 late model stock car wins. Espn hired him because of racing background. Although I admit it is an artificial gimmick, it is superior to what happened before it was introduced, when the leader would inevitably slam on the brakes approaching the caution flag frequently allowing ten or fifteen cars past just so a teammate could get a lap back. Now you can say in that sort of case it was the leader's decision to do that, but pretty much in every caution circa 1999-2002 the leaders let some lapped cars past coming to the caution. I think the average lead lap would actually be larger if the gentleman's agreement were still in place than with the Lucky Dog, especially with the even-greater increase in multi-car teams since then. And I'm sorry, I find slamming on the brakes to give your teammate a lap back more gimmicky than NASCAR letting one car have a lap back... Most of the recent rule changes bother me; that really didn't. Logano probably would have gotten his lap back both times under the gentleman's agreement system anyway. I would do away with the Lucky Dog now however given the double-wide restarts and letting cars get their lap back while the leaders pit. Adding a Lucky Dog to the wave-around is I admit totally superfluous in that situation, and may have contributed to this one instance. While there was nothing impressive about Logano's win from a driving standpoint, I would argue I was more impressed with how he won than how Reutimann did at Charlotte. Logano was much closer to out of fuel than Reutimann was. Logano had to drive on the track ten or fifteen green-flag laps nearly out of fuel while Reutimann just stayed out of the pits when others pitted and drove around a few caution laps. Logano also had to beat all those other cars in front of him that eventually ran out of gas like Newman, which he was able to do because he was off-sequence. It's not like there haven't been people who have won races by staying out of the pits when it rained before. It's just more likely to go to a mid-pack driver now that there are regularly 20 cars on the lead lap. People want to blame the Lucky Dog exclusively for that, when really I think the cars that get laps back that way is comparable to the latter era of the gentleman's agreement. I would blame the sharp increase in caution flags for the increase in the average number of lead lap cars than I would the Lucky Dog. Yes, there is a Lucky Dog at each caution, but the real reason the lead laps are much bigger is because the field gets compressed at consistent intervals throughout the race, and the leader doesn't get to lapping the 11th-20th place cars much. Go back to 6 cautions a race like the old days and you'll start to get a lot more 10-15 car lead laps and fewer mediocre strategy winners. As for giving Logano the win due to being the "hometown boy", I don't really see that. I certainly believe NASCAR makes biased calls, Regan Smith v. Tony Stewart for instance. But they've called rain-shortened races at Loudon before (won by Stewart, Newman, and Kurt Busch) which were also typically not far from the end. I think NASCAR doesn't really want to try to race in the rain and when it starts raining enough, they have been choosing to err on the side of caution (that's the polite way to argue for the sharp increase in cautions I suppose as well). Loudon doesn't have lights either, and it was almost 6:00 and I think it's kind of unreasonable to race there without lights past 7:00, even near the summer solstice. I don't think I agree with racing in even a light rain just so there can be a more deserving winner. The anger directed towards Logano kind of astounds me. Yes, he has been elaborately hyped, but he seems to be a pretty nice guy and not somebody who actually thinks he is the greatest driver ever...his teammates are probably better examples of that. Was he a deserving winner? No. But for once I like something other than the same old, same old Hendrick show. I was happy when Reutimann and Logano won, even though Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon were the deserving winners respectively, because it was something DIFFERENT. 77. The leader was under no obligation to do this and he should be slowing down anyway for the caution. 79. "it is superior to what happened before it was introduced, when the leader would inevitably slam on the brakes approaching the caution flag frequently allowing ten or fifteen cars past just so a teammate could get a lap back." That's an exagerration. Rarely would more than 2 or 3 cars get a lap back, and they almost never did that late in a race. "I think NASCAR doesn't really want to try to race in the rain and when it starts raining enough, they have been choosing to err on the side of caution " Try telling that to those of us who went to Martinsville last year. It rained for almost the entire race. And it was 35 degrees outside too! But they kept racing and gave the fans a full race. That is the good thing about tracks one mile and under. As long as they keep racing, and keep heat in the track, you can race unless it starts pouring. When they threw that caution, the track was still gray. They could have raced until the end. "Yes, there is a Lucky Dog at each caution, but the real reason the lead laps are much bigger is because the field gets compressed at consistent intervals throughout the race, and the leader doesn't get to lapping the 11th-20th place cars much. He was able to build Joey's sister an entire skating rink for her figure skating career. Of course he won a lot of races as a youngster, he had the most expensive stuff there. Plus he had a family that could haul him all over the country. Then he gets to drive Joe Gibbs cars in the Busch North Series, the Nationwide Series, and now the Cup Series. You always want to project a little bit of yourself into whoever you pull for. Unless you were born with a silver spoon, you can't find that in Logano. 80. Why did the Bud Shootout format change from pole winners to manufacturers? Because Budweiser wanted to snub all the Coors Light pole winners from the previous years, resulting in Scott Slow and Stale Bread and many others lucking their way into the race. But because Office Depot and Old Spice were left out, they created the ridiculous "wild card" to allow Tony Stewart to race. Then there's also Sprint kicking AT&T out of the sport, and Nationwide doing the same to GEICO. And let's not forget Sunoco demanding a smaller Shell logo on Harvick's firesuit. The reason why sponsors are running the sport is because they are paying so much. If there was some sort of a spending cap or if NASCAR didn't demand a truckload of money to be an "Official Sponsor" maybe something would change. 82. Now a big name and big money sponsor, AT&T, which actually wants to be a part of the series, is black balled. Real smart! And they won't let Verizon (which bought Alltel) on the #12 car. When cars are being waved around by staying out of the pits, that's enough cars getting back on the lead lap. And yeah, I was being a little overdramatic about the gentleman's agreement. It's just certain races stand out such as summer Michigan '97 when Jeff Burton slammed on the brakes to give Mark Martin a lap back after he cut a tire (allowing 10 or 15 cars past), then Martin won, or Jerry Nadeau doing the same thing to give Jeff Gordon his lap back at Atlanta '01 before Gordon lost to Harvick in the photo finish. Gordon was not CLOSE to Nadeau, and Martin was not CLOSE to Burton. It's those kind of abuses that led me to not hate the idea of the Lucky Dog. (Mind you, I'm right with you on things like the chase, aero push, removing races from Darlington and Rockingham, debris cautions, and bogus officiating...) Even so, I would still say that on most cautions in that era 2-4 cars got their laps back, not just 1. You're probably right that it didn't happen at the end of the race. I agree that there are drivers who are more talented than Logano in weaker cars, and there are a LOT of drivers I think deserve Cup rides who have gotten raw deals: Travis Kvapil, Johnny Sauter, and Scott Wimmer naming a few off the top of my head who have never had good equipment but deserve it. I'm just not bashing Logano yet because he seems to have been pretty humble about his success so far. If he was bragging about how he was the best driver who ever lived or something on the basis of this one race, then yes, fire away. It's the *media* who have been talking about him as if he were the greatest driver ever, not Logano himself. But although he has been spoiled, apart from his dumb move at the Toyota Showdown last year, he seems to have be a pretty nice guy, a rarity among recent rookies. With Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin as models, that could change. 87. Kit posted: 07.04.2009 - 5:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Oh boo hoo, someone call the Wahmbulance." I guess it is just the fact that the "gentlemen's agreement" was decided by the drivers on the track, not the suits in the tower like the Lucky Dog is. They control WAY too much of the sport as it is. They need to put it back in the hands of the drivers and mechanics. "And seriously guys, trust me, the rain wasn't letting up enough. But y'all are so ignorant to remember that NH doesn't have lights." They could have kept racing until the end, the track was still gray when the caution was thrown. NASCAR has been WAY too quick to try to end races. In the past, they waited until the last possible minute. I was the Charlotte race in 1997 that ended at 2AM after three rain delays. Once at Pocono they waited out a 3 hour storm. "Haha, if Dale Jr. drove one of those, he'd slide past the emergency room entrance." HA! Or he'd miss the road leading to the hospital completely. "Aw hell!! There were just so many road signs that I missed it." 90. "It's the *media* who have been talking about him as if he were the greatest driver ever, not Logano himself." But Logano signed the contract to drive the #20 car. "HA! Or he'd miss the road leading to the hospital completely. "Aw hell!! There were just so many road signs that I missed it." He'd get into an argument with his hospital over the radio while other cars are passing him. 91. When I look at the results, it shows Joey Logano won and took home the winners paycheck. That's all that matters. Great job to Joey and the entire 20 team! 92. Well, NASCAR says it's a win, and their opinion on it is the only one they're gonna consider. 100. Carpentier, the defending polesitter of the New Hampshire event, was making his return to the #36 for the first time since his last-place finish in the Pocono 500 three weeks before. On Friday, a track bar problem prevented him from competing in most of the opening practice session. Still, when rain washed out qualifying, Carpentier secured the 41st starting spot. Carpentier was hanging tough in Sunday's race when, on lap 14, his brakes locked entering turn three, bouncing him off the outside wall and bringing out the first caution of the race. Carpentier was uninjured and, while the contact was not too severe, the #36 did not return to the track. Carpentier is the fourth driver to finish last in a 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup point race because of a crash, the last being Dave Blaney's early wreck in the Crown Royal Presents the Russ Friedman 400 at Richmond last month. With the second last-place finish for driver, number, and team in 2009, Carpentier now makes it a four-way tie for 2nd in the 2009 last-place standings behind overall leader Dave Blaney. 2009 RANKINGS 1st) Dave Blaney (3) 2nd) Mike Bliss, Patrick Carpentier, David Gilliland, Tony Raines (2) 3rd) Todd Bodine, P.J. This was just a lucky win, nothing else. His first true win came in 2012 at Pocono. 109. In 2008, Regan Smith, a rookie in 2008, would have won the race at Talladega if it wasn't for that stupid double Yellow line rule, and in 2004, Kasey Kahne was close to winning a couple of races (Kind of like Larson in 2014) but he couldn't get the deal. 112.
