Thought JR was gonna win, but at least Vickers won it, not any Hendrick or Roush or Gibbs team. Also the first "Official" victory for Red Bull Racing and only the 3rd Toyota team to win a race (Gibbs and MWR are the others). 2. We had a David Ragan sighting today. But he got spun out twice. We also had a Dale Jr sighting. Good pit call by McGrew. For most of the day he was the 5th running Hendrick car, as usual. 3. Congrats to the Red Bull team, they've had some troubles and copped a lot of criticism in their short existance so far. 4. I don't know what Mark Martin's crew chief was thinking in not pitting under the last caution. Mark is to close being out of the chase to do that type of a gamble. Dale Jr. gets his best finish since Talladega. I have to give his crew chief credit for his call for making Dale Jr. pit. Casey Mears gets his best finish of the year. I know there are rumors of Sadler taking over for Mears, but Richard better not do it. Elliott Sadler is not an upgrade to Mears. 5. Second straight race he leads a ton of laps and has nothing to show for it. Although I can't feel too sorry for him since more often than not he has Lady Luck on his side. Even though I dislike Vickers and TRB for stupidly firing Allmendinger, they deserved a win. I knew when the team started up in 2007 that they had a lot of potential despite all the DNQs. If they would finally get in the top 35 and sort out other things they would be able to run good each week. It looks like Brian's move has finally paid off for him. Now all TRB needs to do is toss Scott Slow on his ass and hire a halfway decent driver for the 82 and they would have even more success. I was thrilled to see Dale Jr finally have a strong run, and it wasn't with fuel mileage either. This was his first laps led and top 5 since Talladega in April. Since 2006 he has done really good at this track. Sideways Sam scores his second top 5 and sixth top 10 of the season, yet he's buried in the points because of several other poor finishes. His other teammate nearly caused a pileup on the frontstretch but still finished 13th. Fourth time this season that a time has scored their first win. Phoenix racing won at Talladega, MWR won Charlotte and SHR won Pocono. 10. Vickers broke his 100 race winless streak. Dale Jr's 350th career start in Cup. Tony Stewart officially clinched a spot in the Chase and finished out of the top 10 for only the fifth time this season. David Stremme ties his best finish of the season after spinning out earlier in the race. Casey Mears scored his best finish of the season and first top 10 since Dover in June. Joey Logano gets his first top 10 since his rain-shortened victory at New Hampshire. Jimmie Johnson remains winless at Michigan after leading 279 laps out of 400 laps at the track this year. 11. The top 10 is mostly filled with drivers who normally don't finish that high. "I was thrilled to see Dale Jr finally have a strong run, and it wasn't with fuel mileage either." Jimmie and Mark would have had 39 laps and fresh tires to drive back to the front, and instead they run themselves out of gas. Just Dumb. The #5 team has made horrendous pit strategy calls all season long, and if Mark misses the Chase, that will be the reason why. I'm very pleased to see Brian Vickers win. Leaving Hendrick for an upstart team was a ballsy move, and it's nice to see it finally pay off for him. As far as I'm concerned, Casey Mears and Elliott Sadler are one in the same: overrated drivers who don't deserve a ride in Sprint Cup. I don't know what Richard is thinking if he hires Sadler. More proof that Alan Gustafson is a bad crew chief because he should not have taken the chance of Mark running out of gas. Jimmie runs out of gas at Michigan yet again. Third time's the charm. Vickers's third straight Michigan pole translated into his first uncontroversial win, Toyota's first win at Michigan, and the first win at Michigan for the pole sitter since June 2006. 19. Well it's sticking so far -all of suddenly it looks like Edwards might be the only Roush guy to make the chase. Before there was only 13 guys in the battle for the chase, meaning both Kenseth and Biffle couldn't miss. His crew chief brought him in to pit." And that's exactly the sort of smart calls and smart driving that fans want out of Dale Jr and his 88 team. For the first 150 laps they were about a 15th to 20th place car, and nearly fell off the lead lap with an unscheduled pitstop. But they worked on the car, Lance made good decisions on pit road, and Dale Jr didnt smack the wall running the high line like he did in this race last year. This race was a good example of picking up spots as the race wore on and I hope to see more of it. Awesome Bill qualified in the top 10 for the third time this year. Put him in good equipment and he would run door to door with Stewart, Johnson, Gordon and any others. With Brian winning and running so well this year, it really puts Scott Slow in the hot seat. Hopefully he gets fired and replaced with someone more deserving like Jamie McMurray, Regan Smith or Aric Almirola. 22. Leaving Hendrick for an upstart team was a ballsy move, and it's nice to see it finally pay off for him." He's got a long way to go before it "pays off". Ever since 2007, their first year without BV, HMS has been dominating like no team has since Petty Enterprises in the 1960's. They have simply had no equal. Even cars that just rent their chassis and motors are winning regularly. Look what Phoenix Racing did at Talladega with a Hendrick car, motor, and driver. They usually start and park. The car he left (the 25/88) has even won twice in those years despite having two drivers that haven't done much of anything lately. And let's fact it, if it doesn't come down to fuel mileage, JJ wins easily. And if 15 crew chiefs don't totally lose their heads and decide not to pit on the last caution he doesn't win. So he needs to win a lot more, maybe even a few wins where he doesn't gamble on fuel or wreck the leaders, before leaving the dominant organization of the last 15 years pays off. "-looking how Dale jr. charged up the field with the fresh tires and able to go full throttle, if Johnson, Martin, Gordon and maybe Edwards or Kenseth would of pitted that last caution and put themselves in jr. position, they likely would of won. This is Michigan, cautions don't come very often. If the 18th place car (Jr) can drive up to third with fresh tires and not having to save fuel, JJ, Mark, and Kenseth for sure could have finished 1-2-3. I don't know what they were thinking. 26. Are you that clueless why Jr got a top 5? He only got a top 5 by a call of a crew chief. The driver had nothing to do with it. Usually a car with fresher tires is faster than cars with older tires, unless the car is junk. Also Drivers were holding back speed to save fuel. Common sense says the driver with more fuel should go past a driver that is saving fuel. 30. He had 20th place cars in both, but timely cautions and pit strategy got him in the top 5. It's what a team that's trying to get better every week needs to do from time to time, but he's still got a ways to go. Jr. had a great finish. Good for him, he needed it. But he's far from back. Bristol is coming up and he has run well there in the past. I want to see him run top 5-10 this weekend before I even think about saying he's back. Matt G posted: 08.18.2009 - 9:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think this race could be bad news for Biffle and Kenseth. This is a track that Roush has historically dominated and they were spanked by both the Hendrick Chevys and the Red Bull Toyota of Brian Vickers. If the Roush cars, which are now winless in the last 21 races, are not a factor for the win at Michigan, then they could struggle big time at Bristol and Richmond. We all know how well Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer run at those tracks. This could get very interesting. 38. Matt G posted: 08.18.2009 - 9:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, I'm hoping that the double file restart rule injects some excitment back into the Bristol night race. Although there are now two groves instead of one, the double file restarts will leave both lanes clogged with equally matched cars. If there is nowhere for anyone to go, drivers might get impatient and cause a huge wreck. When the lapped cars started on the inside, the leaders could clear them single file and then choose which lane they wanted to use to pass. That extra room to play with may not be available until several laps after a restart now. 39. Anonymous posted: 08.18.2009 - 9:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bronco, How is it the driver that something to do with 88 car's finish this time when it was 15- to 20 place car before the crew chief made the call to go in the pits when most cars stayed out with older tires and less fuel than the 88 car? Take a look at the following facts in race: 1.) Fresh tires beats older tires unless the tire compound doesn't give up much in speed during a run. Teams before the final run tried to do 2 tires and they felled back like the 25 car earlier in the race. That means the 88 car had an advantage of having fresher tires. 2.) During a fuel Mileage run, drivers are expected to save fuel by not running as hard. That means a driver that is good on fuel is supposed to pass them with fresh tires like the 88 car did. 40. Anonymous posted: 08.18.2009 - 10:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bronco, What is the idea of call a Dale Jr. hater when I am neutral on him? I am willing to give a driver credit, but when it is by the crew chief I don't. This is different than Micheal Waltrip 4 wins. There was no difference in tires during those 4 plate wins and no car on the track saving fuel. Micheal Waltrip's crew chief didn't have to the decision of not staying out during a caution. Like I mentioned on a post that I just posted, there are some common sense things in racing like having a bunch drivers that not pitting and a closer on field. 1.) Teams that stayed out don't go full throttle when saving Fuel. Drivers that stayed out are supposed pass them. Duh! 2.) cars with older tires are not usually faster than cars with newer tires due to tire wear. 8 to 10 laps difference on tires means a lot in racing and that is where the 88 team had an advantage. 3.) 88 car didn't pass the other 2 cars because his tires are no longer as fresh they were and is possible for tires that are 8 laps older to produce equal tire times after a while like the announcers said on past Nascar races. If the 88 car started 14th or 15th after taking fresh tires and fuel, he had a better chance to win. 41. The 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, Bobby Labonte's inaugural season with Yates Racing's cooperative with Hall of Fame Racing has been marred by several poor finishes. Aside from a strong fifth-place finish in last March's Shelby 427 at Las Vegas, Labonte has finished in the top 15 just one other time, in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway. Coming into Michigan last week, Labonte was 27th in points. He qualified 33rd with a speed of 183.290 mph. In the opening laps of Sunday's race, Labonte's Ford was off the pace, struggling with an engine miss that kept him in the back. When rain brought out the first caution on lap 7, Labonte came down pit road early for the crew to check his car. David Gilliland's #71 went behind the wall that same lap, just before the red flag stopped the race for 19 minutes. When the race resumed, Labonte's hood was up on pit road, his crew changing the spark plugs. The race restarted on lap 12 and, on lap 19, last-place leader Dave Blaney went behind the wall. Gilliland returned to the track, 9 laps down, by lap 26, and Labonte came back on the track on lap 30. Still running in last, Labonte had hardly completed 18 laps when he pulled behind the wall a second time with a blown engine. Though he tied Blaney's 18 laps completed, Labonte remained the last-place finisher of the race. The race marked Labonte's first last-place finish since he drove the flagship #43 for Petty Enterprises in the 2007 Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville. The #96 had not finished last since then-rookie Andy Houston crashed out Cal Wells' McDonald's Ford just one lap into the 2001 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. The Hall of Fame Racing team, which once owned the #96 team in its entirety, had never before finished last.
