Kyle Bush has himself to blame for not being in the chase. You could pin point this on 2 races this year before the chase for him. The race that he tried to blow up his engine and the 2nd Daytona race this year. The 18 team also had getting into the top 10 at cookie cutter tracks this year outside of Auto Club Speedway, and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The first time Harvick had back to back top 10's in cup this year. 2. If he had better luck in his career, this would have been his 3rd win at the track and probably his 10th win overall. Regan Smith scores the first DNF of his career with a crash. McDowell makes his first start in almost a year and does a start and park. Shrub misses the cha$e despite a valiant 5th place effort. If he had held his line at Daytona this year instead of blocking, he would be in. Kenseth misses the cha$e for the first time ever but he didn't deserve to be in anyways. Last Row Joe Nemechek runs only his 3rd full race of the year. 3. Mark Martin - has a chance to win the chase if he continues to finish in the top 5 and other teams get a bad finish or 2. The only things that the prevent Mark from getting the Championship is the fact Mark costs himself wins not being aggressive enough and Talladega is wild card. Jimmie Johnson - He is one of the favorites to win the chase because of his past in it. The only things that could prevent him to win the chase is the team beats itself and Talladega. Tony Stewart - Don't like his team going into the chase. Team has been slumping since the win at Watkin's Glen. Denny Hamlin - I don't know if Hamlin could keep up his hot streak going. If he does, he is a favorite. Hamlin is great at mile track or less throughout his cup cup career and will help him in the chase if the pit crew doesn't mess up. The key for Denny Hamlin for the chase doing well at Cookie cutter tracks and not being in the big one at Talladega. Jeff Gordon - Jeff has been very steady this year based on top 5's and top 10's, but isn't the same driver as he was in the past. He has a chance in the chase because he is steady, but winning it will be hard for him. The key for him winning the chase is other chase drivers having bad races and not being in the big one at Talladega. Kasey Khane - I don't see him winning the chase this year. Team isn't strong enough for that. Brian Vickers- I don't see him winning the chase. Red Bull is not at the level as Hendrick is yet. Vickers is having a career year. The problems with him for the chase is the fact he struggles at tracks that 1 mile or less in his cup career. His 7th place finish at Richmond was a fluke. Kurt Busch - team has no chance in the chase. I don't like teams that have lame duck crew chiefs in the chase like Kurt does. His crew chief is leaving the 2 for being crew chief of Martin Truex Jr. at MWR after this season. Kurt at times has been hot or cold this year at cookie cutter tracks besides having a lame duck crew chief. Carl Edwards - slim chance for winning the chase. Roush is having a down year as an organization. His fracture isn't doing him any favors either. Carl needs other teams to have 2 bad races in the chase in order to win the chase. Greg Biffle - slim chance for winning the chase. Greg being in a racing organization that having a down year is a bad mix for him since he is a streaky driver. Juan Pablo Montoya - I don't see him winning the chase. It is his first time in the chase and he became to much of a points racer besides being on an organization that isn't on the same level as Hendrick. Ryan Newman - Has no chance winning the chase - 39 team has been too streaky this year. 5. 18fan posted: 09.13.2009 - 10:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) This race had some of the worst coverage ever. For every lap they showed the lead they seemed to show ten laps of Kyle and Brian. I am disappointed that Kyle missed the chase, but at least he put up a fight, unlike Kenseth. But Kyle was way to inconsistent to deserve to be in the chase. Denny Hamlin crushes the field to finally win on his home track. He and Jeff Gordon led all but four laps of the race. Kurt Busch got no attention for most of the end of the race while he was running third. Everybody that finished in the top 5 has made at least two chases. I don't think Tony will be a top threat to win the title. He will be competitive, but, like Kyle last year, has slumped after winning Watkins Glen. If he can keep it up, I actually like Denny's chances. Eighth last place finish for Blaney. This team and MSRP should be banned from NASCAR. I think there were at least two phantom cautions. Just like Marcos Ambrose this year, Brad Keselowski can't run for rookie of the year next year because last night was his ninth start of the season. 6. 18fan posted: 09.13.2009 - 10:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I know Montoya took a crappy team and put it in the chase, but I don't like how much praise he got for running 7-15 every week. I was so torn between pulling for him since I needed a good finish, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted him to miss the cha$e. He finished 5th and still missed it. YES!!!! I hope he enjoyed running Bobby Labonte's Championship Interstate Batteries scheme at Texas this year, because that is the only championship paint scheme he'll be in this year. What goes around comes around. BTW, he also cost himself in that Texas race by bumping somebody that slid into him and he cut his own tire. He also screwed up at Chicago, the Daytona 400, Talladega, Sears Point, Darlington, and Martinsville. He cost himself. Have fun being one of the also rans, you asshole. It was so odd to see the #17 team implode like that. Even Matt Kenseth, Mr Cool, pulled a Dale Jr at one point by missing his pit stall, then blaming his crew for it. Hard to believe he won the first two races. What the hell happened to Roush this year? I know they have always been streaky, but this is pathetic. I'll give credit where credit is due. Brian Vickers, one of the worst short track drivers ever, gets a good finish when he absolutely needs it. He usually crumbles under pressure, but he didn't for once. 8. You might as well take a seat on the couch Kyle. And he would have had the points lead had he got in! Later Kyle!!!!!!!! And yes, Brian Vickers who absolutely sucks at short tracks and at Richmond RACED his way into the playoffs... Should get a big atta boy from everyone!!! Juan Pablo Montoya- Congratulations! I would have never thought at the beginning of the year that after a merger and car-make change that this guy would be running very competitively and into the playoffs. It doesn't matter what you put this guy in he races every lap like its his last. No he did not win a race (eventhough he should have at Indy, but Nascar had other ideas), but he did what he had to do all year and he reached his goal of making the playoffs. Atta boy Pablo. I will definitely be pulling for Vickers, Martin, and Montoya in this Chase. 9. There's always pressure when you're Dale Jr. He absolutely has to win a race this season, whether by rain, fuel mileage, wrecking the leading, dominating - whatever. With all his teammates in the cha$e he has to step to prove he belongs in the #88 and to avoid being outside the top 20 in points for the first time in his career. Talladega is obviously his best shot at a win, but he could pull something off at Martinsvile, Texas or Phoenix as well. He will be back in 2010 for sure. And what a weird season it's been for Shrub. He's led a ton of laps this year, yet he has the same number of lead lap finishes as Jamie McMurray. He has four wins but only 3 other top 5s. And WTF is up with Elliott Sadler? No mechanical failures, no wrecks, nothing bad happening yet he finishes 4 laps down?? Sideways Sam gets his 7th top 10 finish of the year although like I've said earlier, I don't ever see him winning a Cup race. 10. Like everyone else said, Kyle has nobody to blame but himself on this one. I was a little dissapointed that he didn't whine about it though at the end. But lets talk about the man of the hour, Brian Vickers. Was 17th in the standings most of the season, and then out of nowhere, BAM! 7th at Daytona,7th at Chicago, 5th at Indy, 6th at Pocono, 11th at the Glen, 1st at Michigan, 12th at Bristol, and two 7th places at Atlanta, and Richmond. This is the comeback kid we've been looking for for quite a while. I hope he wins the championship but I'm not holding my breath. My actual favorite to win is easilly Mark Martin. If anyone deserves to win it this year, it's him. If you disagree, then I don't know what you are but you're not from this planet. And last but not least, COME ON JR! What happened to your hot streak? 11. Anonymous posted: 09.13.2009 - 12:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DaleSrFanForever, You can't call Kyle Busch an also ran because he could play a big factor in the chase despite not being in it. Remember Kyle Busch said that he will help to Denny win the chase. That statement by Kyle may mean that he could take out drivers in the chase to help his teammate. Kyle is good at tracks that are less are not a 1 1/2 this year. That means he could take chase drivers out at Dover, New Hampshire, and Phoenix. 12. No, he's making as high of finishes as he can. Greg Biffle has actually had a better season this year and Biffle's been invisible. I don't see JPM as a threat for the championship at all. So, what's going on with Dale Jr.? He continues to suck. "Jeff has been very steady this year based on top 5's and top 10's, but isn't the same driver as he was in the past." You're right. Nowadays he's taking top 5s in races he normally used to win. He's gotten a lot more conservative. I don't think he's going to be racing full-time in Cup much longer. It's hard to believe how bad the #17 team has gotten. As far as Denny Hamlin, he comes off as kind of a douche. 15. I think he should have been in the fourth Petty/Yates Ford next year instead of Menard, I guess the money from the Menards kept him in the ride. After listening to the in car audio last night Matt had with his crew chief, I now see Ed was telling the truth. Calling out his crew chief and telling his team "we're screwed" before the race was over when there season was on the line, WOW no wonder Roush wants Carl and not Matt, despite his championship, as the face and leader of Roush Racing 21. Talon64 posted: 09.14.2009 - 4:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) For the first time in the last 6 years there wasn't a real surprise finisher in this race. In 2004 it was both Mike Bliss finishing 4th in the 08 3rd JGR car and Mike Wallace leading 45 laps and finishing 4th in the 09 Finch car. In 2005 it was Terry Labonte finishing 9th in the 11 JGR car after Leffler got canned. In 2006 it was Dave Blaney with a top five driving for BDR. In 2007 it was Johnny Sauter getting Haas Racing it's first ever top five finish. Last year it was David Reutimann leading the most laps and finishing 9th. I guess Hornish is the closest thing but he finished 6th in the first Richmond race and he's been running well enough anyways that it wasn't really a surprise. BTW if Kyle wanted to make the Chase all he had to do was win at Richmond, one of his best tracks. The fact he couldn't is really the only reason he didn't make the Chase, everyone throws away points during the season including Vickers and Kenseth and they were all close enough in points that the rest of the season didn't matter, they were all in the same boat with an equal chance of making the Chase. So congrats to Vickers for maybe the race of his career, without that late caution he would've had his first top five at a short track. And big congrats to Hamlin for winning his home track, he's my pick to win the title and Kyle missing the Chase probably helps because he'll have the 18 and 20 helping the 11 in their championship hopes. BTW this is the 2nd time in the last 4 years that Hamlin is the only JGR driver to make the Chase. Jimmie, Jeff, Tony and Hamlin will be the guys who contend for the title. Mark and Carl will have outside chances while the rest will be just trying to make the top 10 in points. Newman will be the guy who ends up last in 12th. 25. 18fan posted: 09.14.2009 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wonder if Kyle means he'll let Denny lead laps and run second, but I don't think he would sabotage his own race to wreck somebody. Also Kyle seems to perform better without a lot of pressure on him. 2005: As a rookie, he was one of the best non-chase drivers and won two races 2006: Picked as one of the favorites to win the chase, choked and finished 10th in points 2007: Was a lame duck driver and was under the radar of his two teammates. Could have finished higher, but was involved in wrecks at Talladega and Kansas. Finished fifth in points. 2008: Won eight races in the regular season, led the points going into the chase, picked to win the title, choked, finished 10th in points. I just noticed something interesting about Kyle, he performs better with less pressure on. Most drivers would be thrilled with a top 5 at Richmond, but that is mediocre for Kyle given his record there. 26. Anonymous posted: 09.14.2009 - 10:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here is my predication on where the chase drivers will finish: 1.Jimmie Johnson 2.Mark Martin 3.Denny Hamlin 4.Jeff Gordon 5.Kurt Busch 6.Carl Edwards 7.Tony Stewart 8.Kasey Kahne 9.Juan Pablo Montoya 10.Greg Biffle 11.Ryan Newman 12.Brian Vickers Here is my reasoning for each driver in terms of standings: Jimmy Johnson is strong at every chase track except for Talladega and should be the chase winner since he wins races races and isn't a true points racer like Mark Martin. Mark Martin is a points racer, but he will get bonus points because he is doing a great job of qualifying this year like like his 6 poles show. He is good at every track, but Talladega is his weakest track in the chase. His problem will be the fact he should be getting wins in some races, but can't deliver since he isn't aggressive enough. Hamlin is great at tracks that not Cookie cutter. He will finish 3rd because he never won at a cookie cutter track. Jeff will finish 4th because while is steady and really doesn't have a weakness, he is not as a aggressive as used to be. I think Kurt Busch will finish 5th despite the crew chief leaving end of the year because some of the tracks fit into his strengths like New Hampshire. Kurt has the same capabilities as his younger brother does in being very good at tracks that are 1 mile or less. His downfall is cookie tracks. Penske is up and down this year with them. I think Carl will finish 6th because he is still very good at cookie cutter tracks despite Roush being a little off. The problem is Carl is not a great plate racer and Roush has problems are tracks that are less than a mile this year. Tony Stewart will finish 7th because he is entering the chase without a top 10 since Watkin's Glen. It seems like the team already peaked and something is missing with the 14 team and I can't pin point it. Kasey Khane will finish 8th because I think RPM will be focusing on 2010 since their moving to Ford. That will Hurt Kasey on the cookie cutter tracks some and Kasey Khane isn't the best at track that are 1 mile or less. Kasey's other problem is his best non cookie tracks are not in the chase like Pocono and Indy. I think Juan Pablo Montoya will finish 9th because the organization he races for isn't that great and he doesn't get a lot of top 5's. The other problem is Juan Pablo Montoya has only one top 10 in his career in 1 mile tracks that are on the chase schedule. He will get top 10's in the chase, but may not get a top 5. I have Greg Biffle finishing 10 because he is a streaky driver and Roush equipment is down right now. The other problem is Biffle is weak at Martinsville and Talladega. Ryan Newman will be finishing 11th because the 39 team is extremely hot and cold and this year. That teams bad races are really bad like having 8 finishes that are 20th are worse. I could be wrong about the 39 team in the chase, but that team is capable of finishing worse than Vickers could. Brian Vickers will finish 12th. Vickers only has 3 top 10 his short track career in cup. That is a problem at Martinsvile for him. Vickers also isn't that great at Dover, Phoenix, and Loudon. At those three tracks, he only has 3 top 10's in his career combined. He is at his best at cookie tracks that are in the chase, and he is good at Talladega at times. The problem is he isn't great at the other 4 tracks in the chase. Until Vickers gets better at 1 mile tracks or short tracks, he will not be a true threat in the chase. 27. 18fan posted: 09.14.2009 - 11:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I like the picks the user who posted their opinions about the standings. I think Newman will either finish top 5 or 12th. If that team is hot, they can win races and be a solid contender. If they're cold, they'll be out to lunch. Hey, Vickers finished seventh at Richmond, so he could do something similar at New Hampshire. 28. DaleSrFanForever posted: 09.15.2009 - 11:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I just noticed something interesting about Kyle, he performs better with less pressure on." Exactly. I think the problem is that he buys his own press once he starts doing well and thinks he's invincible. In the first 2/3 of last year and the first 1/3 of this year all the media was already ready to proclaim him one of NASCAR's all time greats. They raved over his car control. So he thought he could do anything and would win every race. So when the car wasn't handling just right, he got extremely pissed off and became totally counter productive. Worst of all, he expected everyone else to just roll over for him. He truly believed it was nothing more than the Kyle Busch Invitational and everyone else was just role players. In the Nationwide races at Watkins Glen and Michigan, he got pissed because people actually raced him for the lead. That is totally ridiculous. He needs to quit believing his own hype. Everyone raves over his multitude of wins in all three series, but guess what. He is the only person trying to run all three series. If the other greats tried to, they would have more overall wins than him. With the equipment he has had in all series he SHOULD be putting up those numbers. JGR is totally in a class by itself for the last 2 years in Nationwide. Look at Logono. He tears it up in Nationwide, then runs 25th every week with a muti time championship team in Cup. All of Kyle's Busch and Cup starts have been with Hendrick or Gibbs equipment. He is not who he thinks he is, and until he realizes that, he'll never live up to his incredible potential. BTW, if your looking for the true "triple threat driver", it is Mark Martin. He destroys Kyle. 39 Cup wins, 48 Busch wins in just 231 starts, 7 Truck wins in just 23 starts, and even 13 IROC wins in 47 starts with 5 championships. Imagine if Mark tried to run a full Busch schedule with that Winn Dixie car (if the schedule allowed it back then) or half the Truck races for a bunch of years. Kyle wouldn't even be in the discussion. Besides, Mark has as many wins in the #5 car with Alan Gustafson in 26 races as Kyle had in 3 years. Kyle Busch, Stand The F*** Down!!!!! And quit buying your sunglasses from the women's section. 29. Smokefan05 posted: 09.15.2009 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 100% agree DSFF. Kyle isn't who he thinks he is. I generally dislike Hendrick, but I hope Mark wins the championship to truly cement himself as one of the all time greats. No, he never got that championship but he was 2nd in 1990, 1994 and 1998. And Jeff Burton finished in the top 5 from 1997-2000 and won a bunch of races as well, before his team went south. But in this decade I agree with you. It seems like they win races one year, and look completely lost the next. 40. You are right, From 1997 to 2000 Jeff Burton was amazing. "I'd rather see Busch disappointed than Jack Roush." I agree. The funny thing is that now everyone is saying "Watch out for Kyle, he doesn't worry about points now, just wins." Um, he has been doing that all year, and that is why he is out of the cha$e. 43. redbyron posted: 09.18.2009 - 6:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) rumor has it montoya is on the pole in new hampshire 44. LASTCAR posted: 04.24.2013 - 12:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dave Blaney picked up the 13th last-place finish of his career in Saturday night's Chevy Rock 'n Roll 400 at the Richmond International Raceway when his unsponsored #66 Prism Motorsports Toyota fell out with brake problems after completing 36 of the race's 400 laps. On Friday, Blaney qualified 32nd with a speed of 124.372 mph. During Saturday's race, Blaney was running in a tight pack of traffic, and while he stayed on the track when Scott Speed's wreck brought out the first caution on lap 5, he dropped out under the ensuing green-flag run with brake problems after completing 36 laps. With his third straight last-place finish, Blaney is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver ever to finish last in more than two consecutive races. He is also just the third driver to finish last in both races at Richmond: the other two were Tommy Gale in 1983 and Harry Gant in 1990. By increasing his career total to thirteen last-place finishes, Blaney is also tied with Todd Bodine and Derrike Cope for the most last-place finishes scored since 1998. Blaney's eighth last-place finish of 2009 has put Phil Parsons' Prism Motorsports team just one finish away from tying Means Racing's season record of nine last-place finishes scored in a single season. Unlike Blaney, Prism Motorsports is not the first team to finish last in three consecutive races: that statistic goes to Geoffrey Bodine's owner-driver operation, which pulled that feat in May of 1997. Back then, two straight engine failures forced Geoffrey's #7 QVC Ford to finish last at the Infineon Raceway and at Talladega Superspeedway. When Geoffrey was injured before the next points race, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, brother Todd Bodine was tabbed as the relief driver. Todd then finished last in the 600 after an early crash. The #7 team's streak ended the following week in the Miller 500 at Dover, but just barely. With all cars still on the track on lap 240, Geoffrey Bodine got in a wreck in turn three with Bobby Hillin and Dick Trickle. While all three cars retired from the race, Trickle finished 41st with 238 laps completed, Bodine got 42nd with 237, and Hillin, the last-place finisher, completed 234. 2009 RANKINGS 1st) Dave Blaney (8) 2nd) Mike Bliss, Patrick Carpentier, David Gilliland, Joe Nemechek, Tony Raines (2) 3rd) Tony Ave, Todd Bodine, P.J.
