I feel bad for Dale Jr. Started off the race great and pulled away from the field, but the pit crew takes him out of contention then he has an engine issue. The performance is getting better but their having terrible luck. 2. kb 09 champ posted: 10.04.2009 - 7:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (4) Stewart got lucky again, all his wins have been luck and kurt busch will come back and win the championship with pablo 2nd. 3. Then he looked to have a strong car, until his stupid pit crew screwed him over, and they could never recover from that. Finally the engine lets go to put him out his misery. Its stupid shit like this which has him buried in the points, because they've run a lot better than it shows. I'm have to question the quality of Hendrick equipment on the #88 when one of their cars has 3 engine failures this year. In 2007 and 2008 combined they only had 2 failures among 4 cars. Sucked for Kenseth also to lose an engine while having a good run. The Biff once again leads a lot of laps, yet can't seal the deal on a win. JPM gets his third straight top 5, proving once again that he is for real. Good run for Awesome Bill and Erik Darnell scores his best career finish. 5. I completely agree. Of course the Jr haters will try to twist it and put the blame on him. 6. 18fan posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Anybody notice that right after Jr's pit crew's mistake, they showed that Jr's crew is leading the fastest pit crew award. Too bad Jeff couldn't run down Tony at the end. JPM's luck will end before too long. Both the Busch brothers made huge moves, but neither finished in the top 10. I lol when Jerry Punch mentioned the possibility of Joey winning and then spinning out on lap two. It's called karma for Vickers, he'll finish twelfth. 7. rw posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Props to Brad K, for getting a solid Top 15 and leading a lap after starting 3rd, really can't wait to see him drive in Cup full time next year! Biffle clearly should've won the race but just sometimes tell you he can choke but oh well good run for him. I may not like Juan Pablo but he really is impressing me with his strong runs and momentum and he has yet to DNF this year which is truly a great accomplishment if Nascar had Comeback Driver of the Year (which they should have every year) he would win my vote easily even if he doesnt win a race. Now this is just sad hearing Jr once again having a decent run then the engine blows up, it just makes you wonder what is going on in the 88 camp or then again at Hendrick cause if Jimmie,Jeff and Mark, (maybe Brad) can all finish in the Top 15 but not Jr then there has to be something going on in that garage we dont know about. Good race I must say had a lot of different leaders. 8. Anonymous posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Jr. can't be blamed for his finish today. Anyone including kit would be considered morons if they blame Dale Jr. for today's finish since his pit crew screwed up on the pit stop before blowing up. Dale was also on Pit road while Vickers car spin during pit stops and caused a caution. Dale just had bad luck today and it really wasn't his fault. I usually wouldn't say that because he causes his own this year. Sometimes this year, Dale Jr. has to be blamed for his bad luck. Dale blew an Engine at Indy because of how he left the pit. Dale Jr. also screwed up for pitting in his pit box multiple times this year. A driver can't be blamed for being a lap down due to a pit crew member screwing up during a pit stop. A driver can't be blamed for getting lapped during a pit stop because a caution came out out during pit stops. 9. redbyron posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) bronco says"JPM's luck will end soon" some of you amaze me, you rip the guy when he was doing what he needed to do by "points racing" to get into the chase, which he did.....now, he drives his butt off and gets 3 straight top 4 finishes....at least he doesn't quit like the 18 has done on numerous occasions this year whenever the car isn't right....you make your own luck in this sport, johnson hasn't been "lucky" these past 3 years, and kyle wasn't "unlucky" to miss the chase, the fact is he ran like crap in the 10 races before the chase....on a different subject, anyone notice how many chase drivers finished in the top 12??? it looks like a lot of guys have packed it in for the year, and with the possible exception of talladega, i don't see the upcoming races being much different that today....the top 10-12 cars will be the same you saw today, especially with most of the tracks being similar... 10. redbyron posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) sorry bronco, i meant to say "18 fan says JPM's luck will end soon" 11. potatosalad171 posted: 10.04.2009 - 8:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Even without the pit road issue, Dale Jr. would've screwed up somehow again. Anonymous posted: 10.04.2009 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) When is the last time Micheal Waltrip wasn't involved in a caution? Mark Martin didn't take advantage of Jimmie Johnson finishing 9th as much as he needed to. Mark leading laps helped him today since Jimmie lead laps also before fading to 9th place. Mark needed a top 5 today and didn't get it. Jimmie is going to be tough at tracks like Martinsville. Martinsville is Jimmie's best track. Jimmie usually gains points at Martinsville on other drivers based on the fact he hasn't finished in the top 5 there since the spring race of 2005. Stewart needed this win since he didn't get a top 5 since August. Montoya is going better than I thought in the chase. Vickers is running like I figured. 14. Oh, and he has three other wins this year. "Props to Brad K, for getting a solid Top 15 and leading a lap after starting 3rd, really can't wait to see him drive in Cup full time next year!" Me too, I really think Brad is going to be the real deal. I expect a top-20 points finish and a couple of wins in his rookie year, then he can shoot for the Chase after that. The fact that he won a Cup race already with that slow #09 car (even with HMS gear it was SLOW), and has had a top-10 in a PART-TIME Hendrick car at Darlington, one of the toughest tracks on the circuit convinces me he is ready to race. 15. If Kurt Busch only has one win this year and only 4 others in his time in the #2 car, what makes you think Brad will win multiple races next year? A top 20 points finish sure, but forget about the multiple wins and the cha$e spot. People had the same expectations about Rollgano and look what happened. His "win" this year was a total fluke, the fact that he has no top 5s before or after is proof of that. And speaking of rookies, next year it looks like there may not be any rookies at all. Omg lol. Ridiculous. I had something else to say but forgot it. Oh yeah, it was about the fastest pit crew award. JR is leading the points, but he has had one of the worst pit crews all year, and this race showed it. Why is he leading the points, you ask? Because its a fan-voting. Junior Nation voted JR's crew the fastest, thus he has the most points. Jeff Gordon is the 2nd most popular driver, naturally he's 2nd in the points. It is by no means a comparison of who has the fastest pit crew, its 100% a popularity contest. 19. Dodge posted: 10.04.2009 - 10:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How many of you Junior fans are perfect that you don't make a mistake? It was a mistake on the crew man and the saying goes "You win and LOSE as a team." However, I knew he would have issues sometime, just didn't expect the crew to make it, expected the driver to. If you don't like my comment, get over it. I, too, believe its only a matter of time before JPM has trouble, he drove all over Keselowski who was as high as he could realistically could be and Juan sideswipes him. Finally, from 5th to 11th is ONLY separated by 99 points so I believe Kasey still has a shot to get top 5 in points. 20. I know you're a Dale Jr. fan and all, but until he starts winning races, there's no point of giving him any attention. Even when he has no problems on the track he can't capitalize on it. "I'm have to question the quality of Hendrick equipment on the #88 when one of their cars has 3 engine failures this year." You can question all you want, but there's two Hendrick cars in first and second. Unless you're trying to say that Dale Jr. is getting second-tier Hendrick engines because he's an underachiever, which is a possibility. If you're a team owner, are you going to give your best engines to drivers who have passion like Johnson and Martin, or guys just making laps like Dale Jr.? "JPM gets his third straight top 5, proving once again that he is for real." He has no wins this season compared to drivers who have several. Until this guy starts flat-out dominating on the track like other drivers have done, he's lukewarm to me. He just can't seal the deal. "Anyone including kit would be considered morons if they blame Dale Jr. for today's finish since his pit crew screwed up on the pit stop before blowing up." Personally, I don't give a shit about where Dale Jr.'s finishes. He's not a factor this year at all. It's hilarious how you all are constantly pointing out where Dale Jr. has finished and how his race went when he's only been churning out 25th place finishes race after race. Even when he has races in which his engine did not blow up and his pit crew did not screw up, he's still finishing 25th. Then you all are like, automatically defensive about the guy. Who cares? He's the new Casey Mears. "Even without the pit road issue, Dale Jr. would've screwed up somehow again. He's just not competitive anymore." Exactly, thank you. "at least he [JPM] doesn't quit like the 18 has done on numerous occasions this year whenever the car isn't right" Agreed, but JPM does have his dumbass moments, which is why I don't care for the guy. With the talent he has, if he had an IQ greater than 85, he'd have more than one win. "When is the last time Micheal Waltrip wasn't involved in a caution?" The last time he wasn't in a race. It'd be interesting to see how many cautions Waltrip has brought out in his "career." "Lol, are you kidding me? If Kurt Busch only has one win this year and only 4 others in his time in the #2 car, what makes you think Brad will win multiple races next year? A top 20 points finish sure, but forget about the multiple wins and the cha$e spot." What makes you assume that Brad isn't as good of a driver as Kurt Busch? This coming from a guy who wants to blame Hendrick for Dale Jr. not winning... at least Brad won a race this year. "People had the same expectations about Rollgano and look what happened. His "win" this year was a total fluke, the fact that he has no top 5s before or after is proof of that." Open your f**king eyes, Brad K. is a much better driver than Logano. Brad's also older. It's hard to compare an 18-year-old with barely any Nationwide experience (compared to Brad) rushed into Cup to a 24-year-old Nationwide regular who won a full-length Cup race. 21. Genius, I care and so do several others. Hard as it may be for you to believe, a lot of people don't give all their attention to drivers who win races. If we did, we'd all be Jimmie Johnson fans. "If you're a team owner, are you going to give your best engines to drivers who have passion like Johnson and Martin, or guys just making laps like Dale Jr.?" Who says Dale Jr doesn't have passion? This has nothing to do with passion you dimwit. As a team owner, you should be spreading the wealth among your 4 teams which clearly isn't happening. "Agreed, but JPM does have his dumbass moments" Haha, this is probably the most hilarious part of your post. Care to name any of JPM's "dumbass moments" apart from Indy? "He has no wins this season compared to drivers who have several." Neither do his fellow cha$ers Newman, Biffle and Edwards despite driving for better teams. Wtf is your point? You probably think Reutimann is better than JPM because he has a 1 in the win column while JPM doesn't. "What makes you assume that Brad isn't as good of a driver as Kurt Busch?" I don't know, maybe the fact that Brad is an unproven driver in Cup compared to Kurt Busch? Don't start with his Talladega win, it was nice to see an underdog win it, but it was ultimately a fluke. Restrictor plate racing at Talladega with the CoT has caused many surprising names to run up front and finish in the top 10. Heck, Scott Slow of all people got a top 5 this year, and Greg Biffle finished in the top 10 for the first time ever. Last year you guys like Menard, Riggs, Labonte, Robby Gordon, Kvapil finishing in the top 10. "Open your f**king eyes, Brad K. is a much better driver than Logano. " Dumbass, all I'm saying is that its foolish to be predicting that a driver is going to be winning multiple races a year with a mediocre team and organization. The fastest pit crew award is a dumb joke much like a lot of things in NASCAR. How is At&T allowed to air their commercials when they were banned from sponsoring a car? 23. Kit posted: 10.05.2009 - 2:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) hyperacti, you would think that the fastest pit crew vote would be based on time, not a fan vote. Thanks for pointing that out. "Genius, I care and so do several others. Hard as it may be for you to believe, a lot of people don't give all their attention to drivers who win races." You mention Dale Jr. Every. Single. Race. I just don't see why we need to comment on Dale Jr. for every race when he's been a backmarker for about every race this season. I mean, damn, might as well talk about Casey Mears and Paul Menard every single race, too. What the hell has he done this season to warrant this much attention? "If we did, we'd all be Jimmie Johnson fans." "Genius," Jimmie Johnson hasn't been winning every race this year. Take a look: Kenseth Kurt Busch Kyle Busch Gordon Martin Keselowski Reutimann Stewart Kahne Logano Hamlin Vickers That's quite a list on drivers not named Jimmie Johnson. "Who says Dale Jr doesn't have passion?" I do because he really hasn't done shit since 2004, especially for someone who's last name is EARNHARDT. I hear people blaming DEI for a lot of it, and they're right to an extent, BUT there's been drivers who have done more with less equipment. If he really had that much passion, he would have cut times with Eury Jr. long ago. Instead, it's like racing is a necessary evil for him to maintain his celebrity status. Now, I don't think that's true, I think he loves racing, but that's the way his attitude has leaned towards. I think his real problem is that he's not mentally strong enough to be a dominating, top competitor, which would explain the aforementioned attitude. "This has nothing to do with passion you dimwit. As a team owner, you should be spreading the wealth among your 4 teams which clearly isn't happening." Clearly you've never taken an economics class. If there really is a difference between engine packages at Hendrick, the best engines are going to go to the drivers that show the most potential. Why would Hendrick give an A-grade engine to Dale Jr who isn't grinding good finishes instead of Tony Stewart, who is? Stewart would be the best optimality in that case because he's driving better. If there is a limited amount of "wealth" (your terminology) available , Hendrick is better off giving the most to the drivers who will utilize it the most instead of making everyone worse off by spreading too thin. This is why Ganassi went to shit after 2002: he "spread the wealth" to Casey Mears' team. But realistically, aside from an engine failure or two this season, equipment is NOT the issue with the #88. Dale Jr. has sponsorship that I'm sure is well in excess of $20 million plus I'm sure they share notes with the #48 and the #5. He's on the best team in the sport. I've been hearing these bullshit excuses about Dale Jr. having equipment issues since 2005. It's getting old. A few races here and there, sure, but not two whole f**king seasons in the #88. "What everyone is pointing out is the fact that Jr HAS been getting better, but he keeps getting screwed over by small things whether it be a wreck or a shitty pit crew." He shouldn't be bad in the first place! This is a driver with 18 wins and strong point finishes over five years ago. This isn't Joey Logano we're talking about. Even when things go well for him, he's still making shitty finishes with a team that's probably in the top five of the sport. It's amazing how we had drivers like Alan Kulwicki and Bobby Hamilton who could overachieve in second-rate cars, and now we have a driver like Dale Jr. who was born into Earnhardt family, has MILLIONS of sponsorship dollars, is on the best team in the sport, and still can't do shit. Anyway, I'm tired of talking about him. 26. John Royal posted: 10.05.2009 - 2:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) These few races have shown that right set of drivers are in the chase, that is nice. 27. We're all free to root for whoever we want to, even you. "But realistically, aside from an engine failure or two this season, equipment is NOT the issue with the #88." Explain to me then why Lance McGrew took over at Dover, yet the first car that was built under his supervision didnt hit the track until Indy? That means that from Dover to Chicago, the #88 was taking cars to the track which had been run before, which would be ok if they were top 10 or winning cars, but they were shitty cars to begin with. " I've been hearing these bullshit excuses about Dale Jr. having equipment issues since 2005. It's getting old. A few races here and there, sure, but not two whole f**king seasons in the #88" I never said he's had issues since 2005. 2006 he had a great year, even though he only once and didn't lead as many laps as he did before. In 2007 DEI forgot how to build an engine to last 500 miles which is why he missed the cha$e. In 2008 they were one of the best teams the first half of the year and led lots of laps, but I'll be the first one to admit that they should have had one more than just one fuel mileage win to show for it. In 2009 it all went south. And I'm still what JPM's "dumbass moments" are? 30. Neal posted: 10.05.2009 - 1:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kit - Speaking of Kulwicki, I was just thinking about all the buzz concerning the potential of Tony Stewart winning the championship as an owner-driver and how completely unlike AK's 1992 championship it would be. Let's not kid oursevles. Tony Stewart is an owner on paper only. This is a Hendrick satellite team. The chassis, the engines, and hell even some of the crew members have Hendrick's fingerprints all over them. He needs a new engine, Tony calls up Hendrick. Contrast that with AK Racing. Kulwicki's team was assembled from the ground up. He didn't have an engine alliance with Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Jack Roush, or the Wood Brothers. They built their own chassis and their own engines and Alan's driving ability had them consistently up front on a considerably smaller budget than the big boys at the time. Bottom line, people making a big deal about Stewart winning the title as an owner-driver are kidding themselves. The last true independent champion was (and likely always will be) Alan Kulwicki. 31. Agreed, although both their wins are fluky and they still need a win that isn't at an RP track or rain-shortened to prove themselves further. I think Logano's shown what he can do based on how he's been more of a winner in Nationwide this year than Kyle by getting to the front when it matters instead of leading tons of laps but finishing 2nd a lot. Even Scott Speed has done well driving for MWR in that series so it all comes down to adjusting to the COT and that's why Logano will be a lot better next year when he was SUPPOSED to replace Smoke and drive the 20 car. He might even better off for having an extra full season of experience. Speaking of Smoke, he had a top five car, they did the right strategy at the end and got a much deserved win. If he wins the championship it'll be because they were able to come back from problems in the first two races to salvage decent results unlike the 18 team last season. It was too bad about Dale Jr. though, he had a good car but the stupid pit mistake and then the engine problems cost him. Max Papis finished 32nd which is his best finish at an oval other than Talledega. Speaking of inexperience with the COT... Elliott Sadler finished 19th and 20th! er, I mean Bill finished 19th and Elliott finished 20th. Casey Mears had his 3rd straight finish of 17th or better and is up to 19th in the points and is only 69 points behind Jeff Burton for 2nd among RCR drivers. Ambrose had his 2nd straight 14th place finish, his 17th top 20 finish in 29 races. He can definitely adapt to different cars very well, like Montoya. Carl Edwards got his first top 10 in 6 races. But it was only 10th and he's still in the bottom 3 of the Chase drivers. Meanwhile his teammate Biffle had the car to beat but a pit strategy mistake cost them the win. Biffle leads all Roush drivers in top fives, top tens and laps led. Kahne had his 2nd straight top 10 after his blown engine at New Hampshire. If it weren't for that he probably could've had 3 top tens to start the Chase and be in the top 5 in points. 36. "If Kurt Busch only has one win this year and only 4 others in his time in the #2 car, what makes you think Brad will win multiple races next year?" Because Kurt, like his brother, is an immature dolt. Like Kyle, when his car isn't working just right, he spins out, hits the wall, or finds some way to screw up. In NASCAR, talent (which Brad has plenty of) is only half of the equation in the driver's seat. We forget just how bad Kurt is because his brother is even worse (which I never thought would be possible), but for the most part his car has to be perfect for him to win. Brad has proven he can grind out races and wins in both series. The only time Kurt has ever grinded races out was the last 10 races of 2004. "And I'm still what JPM's "dumbass moments" are?" At an aero sensitive track like Kansas he totally door slammed Keselowski, messing up the side of his car. With the COT, the right sides are crucial for aerodynamics. "Let's not kid oursevles. Tony Stewart is an owner on paper only." Exactly. Rick found a way around the 4 car team limit. "Contrast that with AK Racing. Kulwicki's team was assembled from the ground up." One of the biggest things people need to realize is that Kulwicki was a nobody when he started his team. He didn't have the name recognition Tony had when he started his team. He had to scratch and claw his way for money. Hell, he started out 1991 unsponsored. One year later he was Winston Cup champion. 37. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SHITTING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE TOTALLY SHITTING ME!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE STRADLING ME SHITTING ON MY FACE!!!! That is the biggest bunch of bullshit I have heard in a long time. Even by NASCAR's incredibly low standards that is a pile of steaming hot shit. That royally pissed me off. It's called racing you overpaid assholes in Daytona Beach. Brad had every much of a right to race for the win as everyone else. NASCAR just doesn't want to be embarrassed by a part timer non cha$er winning and showing that their "The best 43 drivers in the world" is an equally steaming hot pile of shit (especially with drivers like Mikey and Paul Menard in fully sponsored rides). It's racing. It would be like if they called a roughing the passer penalty against somebody that didn't even touch Tom Brady. Oh wait, that actually happened too. The other half of the equation is equipment, and I don't see Penske being very good in that department. Penske and Ganassi have always had strong teams in CART/IRL and in sports cars, but that has never translated to the Cup series. You can grind out a top 10 or top 15 from a 20th place car, but you don't grind out wins from 20th place cars, not unless you're at Talladega. "At an aero sensitive track like Kansas he totally door slammed Keselowski, messing up the side of his car. With the COT, the right sides are crucial for aerodynamics." That was yesterday. What about the 28 prior races? You don't end up 3rd in cha$e points and 7th in traditional points, along with no DNFs by having dumbass moments. I find it funny how some of you bashed JPM for points racing in the first 26 races, and then he rips off 3 straight top 5s and you still say stupid things about him. "According to one of the ESPN's pit reporters a NASCAR official went over to Brad Keselowski's pit (while he was still solidly in the Top 5 before that caution lapped him) and told his team to tell him not to race the cha$e racers so hard." That right there pretty much sums up why I and many others detest the cha$e, and why sponsors are fleeing NASCAR. If that's isn't proof that NASCAR doesn't give a shit about the other 31 drivers out there then I don't know what is. It also shows how dumb the idea of a "playoff" really is. If the cha$e really is a playoff, then the top 12 should race again each other without interference from anyone else. If not, then everyone else should be allowed to race however the hell they want without recieving stupid warnings. Speaking of Brainless Brian and his Band of Bumbling Buffons, I just remember that today marks a full year since poor Regan Smith got screwed out of a well earned Talladega win. How appropriate was it that at the very next Talladega race, Brad showed the destruction that happens when you hold your position and let the guy blocking you spin off your nose. This race also marks a 100 points paying races since Harvick's last win. 41. I'm hearing this from the people who said that this wasn't going to work. You can't say "he did better than I thought he would." That might require admitting you were wrong. We've gotta have a bitch fest! It's always "he couldn't do what Kulwicki did". Guess what? Alan Kulwicki couldn't do what he did in 1992 in 2009. Budgets have skyrocketed over the past 17 years, and the way racing is structured makes it pretty much impossible to have a successful single car, independent, owner-driver operation. JPM running third in the points? "His luck will end." 11 top yens in the last 16 races is a bit more than "luck". "According to one of the ESPN's pit reporters a NASCAR official went over to Brad Keselowski's pit (while he was still solidly in the Top 5 before that caution lapped him) and told his team to tell him not to race the cha$e racers so hard." NASCAR has pretty much given up its right to call itself racing. "Entertainment with motors and tires" maybe, but not racing. NASCAR realizes its playoff has been an abysmal failure, and is trying to make the Chase somewhat relevant. What those clueless empty suits don't realize is that part of NASCAR's appeal has always been the idea that an "underdog" can pull off an upset once in a while. There are more than 12 drivers that people actually care about. Remember, these are the same people that pretty much forced Carl Long out of the sport for having an engine a fraction of an inch too big in a non-points race (a race that he ran for a grand total of three laps in). Then, they wonder why nobody watches their shitty races anymore. 42. redbyron posted: 10.05.2009 - 7:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "montoya totally door slammed kesolowski" really?? aren't you the same guy who defended kasey for doing the exact same thing to jpm at pocono and michigan?? anyway....no way that kulwicki was better than stewart, davey allison, ernie irvan, rusty wallace, bill elliot, etc etc etc. he was a great guy and a good driver, much like terry labonte in his prime... No one seems to be a fan of Erik Darnell in the #96 and while he hasn't been competitive (though decent by HOF standards), he's kept out of trouble and think he's giving a fairly good accounting of himself. People aren't fond of Casey Mears here either but I think he's done a fairly good job this year. Best of RCR today. He just hasn't had the flashy runs this year is what is killing him. However, he's usually the 2nd best RCR car in any race and usually around the 15th-20th range. Which is pretty good considering how bad they have been this year. And per usual, A.J. That was an incredibly dangerous and stupid thing to do and NASCAR let him off easy with the 100 point penalty. It should have been at least 200 points and a one race suspension. 2) He didn't "grind" out those wins. He set a record for most laps led at Pocono and led almost half the laps at Michigan. Just like pretty much every win he has had since 2004, he dominated those races. Oddly enough, Almost all of his grinded out wins are his 5 victories at Bristol, the track that requires the most patience. If he would take that attitude to every track, he could be a legend. 3) Penske was really good that year. Ryan Newman had a lot of Top 5s and could have had about 3 or 4 wins, but he is an overrated driver (I didn't say "bad", I said "overrated"). We should have known when they showed up with the "Hollywood Hotel" (I hate that freaking thing) in 2001 we were in for trouble. Even he was able to get a win this year after running up front a lot, and he is not a very good racer. And one last thing: If it wasn't for Roush and Childress having such crappy ass down years, JPM would have never made the cha$e. Yes, that isn't his fault, but if they were up to par with where they usually were, he wouldn't have made it. He needs to get a win before the year ends because this might be his best shot. I had actually posted that race up on YouTube two months ago and nowhere did he say Bobby wanted it more. 2) In the Watkins Glen race page some time ago I questioned why Terry Labonte was a 20th place driver in Hendrick equipment from about 2000-2004. You said the Intimidator's death scared many older drivers into being more conservative on the track and that many of their careers went downhill. That is complete bullshit since in 2001 alone six 40+ drivers won 11 combined races (Hamilton, Jarrett, Rudd, Elliott, Marlin, Wallace). So fear isn't an excuse for Terry's average performance. 3) You've criticized JPM for not having a win this year and for choking away the only chance he had. Yet you seem to have no problem with Newman, Edwards or Biffle not winning this year either. You also don't think its impressive that a guy with no stock car experience three years ago is sitting 3rd in cha$e points with three straight top 5s and no DNFs with an average team. Everyone you mentioned has/had raced in NASCAR for at least 10 years while this is just JPM's 3rd full season. And I don't know how Indy this year can be strecthed into "a bunch of choke jobs" because that's the only significant one I can think of. If anything you're acting like he's a shit driver and you need to get a grip on yourself. "JPM is only getting attention because of what he did in an entirely different sport. He doesn't deserve all the TV coverage, he doesn't deserve all the praise, and he doesn't deserve to be treated as one of the sport's best." Different sport? I thought racing was racing since RACING-reference.com has stats for a variety of series now other than NASCAR. He's excelled in everything he's driven and in a series that's seen many other open wheelers come along and fail over the last 3 years due to the lack of experience he's adapted the best of any of them, he's deserving of the attention whether you or Kit think so or not. But speaking of adapting Ambrose deserves a lot of credit for being the best first year driver in the last 3 seasons, I think he's better suited to the COT than he was the Trucks or Nationwide cars which is amazing. I'm sure he'll get as much attention as Montoya when he makes the Chase in the next couple seasons. 61. DaleJrFan18 posted: 10.06.2009 - 5:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "He hasn't been trying." Exactly, Talon64, so why the hell are we so quick to make JPM out as a great driver? In his third full season, he is doing good BUT he could have won some races. In the past ten years, we've had drivers who were dominant in their third full year. Granted, they had better equipment BUT JPM really should have won a race this season. His equipment did not hold him back that much. Damn, it almost comes off like everyone is paying attention to JPM because he's a minority that they feel the need to show sympathy for. Of course, I don't give a shit about JPM's ethnicity or anything of that nature, but to me, that seems to be what everyone else is doing, even if it's subconscious. Like DSFF said, Bowyer was an unknown in '07. Kahne is FINALLY starting to get attention and he's been winning races in shit cars for several years. Greg Biffle's had seasons like JPM's year and nobody paid attention to him. Plus when everyone wants to talk about how great JPM is, they place far more emphasis on what he's done in other sports rather than in Cup. That's my theory, and I'm not sure if I'm right about it but it sure leans towards that way. If JPM starts winning races and being a real threat on the race track, sure, say what you will about his success, but right now, it's a bit premature. 63. They can both jump into pretty much anything and be quick right off the bat with it. I hate today's specialization where drivers stick with just one series save the occasional race in sports cars. Dale Jarrett (30+ career wins) won 8 times in 8 seasons after Dale died including being outperformed by ELLIOTT SADLER for 3 straight years. In 2001, Elliott, Marlin and Rudd had their best seasons in years. Jarrett dominated the first part of the season, and Wallace was a factor all year long. Labonte was in a slump before 2001, and recovered for one year. Young drivers were better able to compete with veterans because they got into top rides as soon as they entered Cup. Has it ever occured to anyone that they may have been, on I don't know, past their prime! Labonte, Wallace, Jarrett, Rudd, and Elliott were approaching 50. Terry Labonte's stats have been declining before Dale Sr. died. Take a look At Terry Labonte's stats from 1996 to 2002 (year after Dale Sr.'s death): 1996 - 2 wins, 21 top 5's, 24 top 10's 1997 - 1 win, 8 top 5's 20 top 10's 1998 - 1 win 5 top 5's, 15 top 10's 1999 - 1 win, 1 top 5, 7 top 10's 2000 - 0 wins, 3 top 5's, 6 top 10's while racing in 32 out of 34 events 2001 - 0 wins, 1 top 5, 3 top 10's 2002 - 0 wins, 1 top 5, and 4 top 10's Here is a note on Terry's 2000 season. Terry had inner ear injuries in 2000 had to miss a couple races. Terry also had 5 top 10's in the first 11 races, but only has 1 top 10 in the last 21 races that he raced. I doubt that Terry would've got more top 10's in 2000 if he didn't inner ear problems. The 5 team was declining in finishes after Richmond. Terry qualifying poorly didn't help him out. I have been following Nascar since 1993. I recalled the 24 and the 5 car didn't communicate well around the time Terry won the championship and the two teams didn't share notes for several years based on what I heard and it didn't help Terry's skills were starting to decline in Qualifying. Terry's qualifying really declined after 1996 and he was never known as an aggressive driver on the track. Those two things combine means, Terry's stats would be going down. Dale's death didn't cause his qualifying skills to go down. In 1996, Terry's starting spot was 10.6 and each year after that, his start spot went down in average before 2002. The year before Dale Sr. died, Terry qualified 25th or worse 13 times in 19 races before Terry missed time before his inner ear problems. When he returned from his inner ear problems, Terry qualified better than 25th 2 times. That means Terry's qualifying went down after his inner ear problems, but he was on the decline based on qualifying skills. 77. Bill was an owner driver from 1995 to 2000. Bill didn't win a race. His stats wasn't that great. Every driver that was an driver/owner during Bill's time was struggling due to multi car teams. The only problem Bill had was staying healthy. He got hurt in 1996 on the track. He later got hurt going something around his home as a full time driver. Evernham Motorsports wasn't exactly a great team and Dodge is very streaky as a car manufacturer. Kasey Kahnes's stats in 2004 were similar to Bill's in 2003. First of all, if anyone came up to me and said "David Pearson was better than Dale" I wouldn't put up a huge fuss. I personally think Dale is the best ever, but you can make a very good case for Pearson. His winning percentage is off the charts. Of course some of that has to do with him running mostly partial schedules, picking tracks that were their strong points in an age when technology didn't evolve every 10 seconds like it does now. But the fact is when he showed up, he won. Period. I think Pearson had better equipment compared to the competition than Dale had when he drove (Cotton Owens, Holman Moody, and the Wood Bros.), but he still won 1/5 of his races while racing against people like Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Bobby Isaac, and later Darrell Waltrip. "did you ever think that since you always put down junior, that maybe he is affected by his father's death" I don't think so because he did so well in 2003 and 2004. Did the fire affect him? Maybe. But I just get the sense that he doesn't really want to be racing a full time Cup schedule right now. He is constantly talking about shortening the schedule, shortening the races, etc. I just don't think he wants to put the effort in. In my opinion, the biggest effect his Dad's death had on him is that he lost his driving force. He couldn't slack off when his Dad was around because he would have put his foot in his ass. Now there is nobody to tell him off when he screws up. Just Rick Hendrick putting all of his braintrust on his pit box to figure out how to get him going better. "just wondering if, sometimes, your biases and obvious dislikes get in the way of reasoning and logic, because at times you seem like a real intelligent guy, but other times you seem like an obnoxious drunk at some bar..." First of all WAS Dale's death. He did an interview talking about how Dale was in his motor coach a few days before the 500 and they were talking about how Dale only needed to make 7 more starts to break Terry's Iron Man record (which now belongs to Ricky Rudd), and Dale responded "That's if I make it that far". Terry said they all just laughed it off at the time, but you could tell it affected him afterwards by the tone of his voice. Secondly, he was never very agressive on the track. As the equipment got more and more durable, everyone around started running harder and harder but he kept just cruising along. Thirdly, his son began a racing career. That took a lot of his focus away. It is like Kyle Petty when Adam started his career. 80. No wins, 3 top 10s, one top 5, 24th place average finish, 23rd in points and ZERO laps led! Remember, 2001 was the year in which Jeff Gordon won a bunch of races and a 4th championship and even Jerry Nadeau came within a lap of winning the fall Atlanta race. 2002 wasn't much better, with no wins, one top 5, 23rd place average finish, 24th in points and 11 laps led. And 2002 was the year in which Jimmie Johnson kicked ass as rookie, and even Joe Nemechek contended for wins at the fall Atlanta race and Homestead. Both those seasons are even worse than Dale Jr's 2009 stats! 2003 was a much better year for Terry and he finished 10th in points with a Southern 500 win, some laps led, more top 5s and top 10s than previous years and no DNFs. By 2004 even rookie Brian Vickers finished better than Terry in the point standings. Bottom line - Dale Sr's death may have affected the 40+ crowd mentally to some extent, but none of them showed it on the track like Terry did. In any case I have a hard time buying that theory when in 2001 alone three 40+ drivers finished in the top 5 in points. "It is like Kyle Petty when Adam started his career." In 1997 he decided to start his own team (which he later merged into Petty Enterprises) to be sure that Adam had somewhere to race. As everyone knows, since 1979, starting your own full time Cup team is a kiss of death statistically (except AK). Kyle was a damn good driver, winning races in equipment nobody else did jack shit in. If he ever had the chance to drive for a power before Adam showed he was really talented he could have won a championship. But, like most parents, he would rather his son be a success. If you made a comment or two about how he's improved this year, that would be expected, but to continuously focus on a driver who hasn't won a race yet this season when he should have and had a "regular season" just like Greg Biffle, there's something else going on here. Elliott was grinding out good finishes and winning races, so no, I don't think his performance was on the downhill. He wasn't as dominant as he could have been and yes, I believe that could probably be due to fear. They could win races still, but they didn't take as many risks. Same with Rudd, but with Rudd, he's a family oriented man and he was looking past his racing career. Marlin became that way after his injury. Earnhardt's death made it obvious that they were not invincible on the track, and for those drivers above with families, the trophies didn't shine as much anymore. They had the ability but not as much motivation. "Has it ever occured to anyone that they may have been, on I don't know, past their prime! Labonte, Wallace, Jarrett, Rudd, and Elliott were approaching 50. There's a reason why only three drivers over the age of 50 have won. They're just not the same driver." If they were past their prime, they wouldn't have been finishing as strong as they were. I think a lot of it also has to due with the fact that Walace and Elliott had already accomplished A LOT in the Cup series, so what else was left for them to do? The 36 race schedule just wasn't something they looked forward to anymore. 93. What the f**k does this have to do with the Cup race, outside of both of them starting in it? If you want to discuss Ambrose and Montoya's open wheel careers, keep it on the CART or IRL sections. I don't go onto a IRL race page and start discussing whether Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart would kick ass in the IRL. Ambrose is also similar case. And yes, background doesn't mean anything when there is race, but still, it is interesting. When more races and seasons go by it is gradually less interesting. Mika Salo might be driving somes races in Nationwide next year, it is interesting because he is from my country. It is interesting how will he do because he has never driven a NASCAR car. Here and there is lots of interesting things going on, and that is too interesting. I like to be interested. Has Montoya gotten too much attention in races? Sterling was on fire at the end of 2001 and he led the points for I think around 25 weeks in 2002. The won that McMurray got, Sterling would have had. Sterling's team was better at the end of the season, and the only real competition they had that year was Tony Stewart. So had Sterling not gotten hurt, they probably would have sealed the deal. MMM was never quite that dominant. They were a consistent top 5 team in that period, though. Ganassi totally screwed everything up in 2003 by putting Casey Mears in a car. That disrupted Sterling's and Jamie's teams. Their cars were way off at races they were dominant at in 2002. If Sterling started his NASCAR career now in a decent car, he'd have a couple of Chase championships and a ton of races won. 104. Otherwise, what in the hell is the point of having different sections of this web site if you'll just post whatever topic you want anywhere and it doesn't matter to you? That's not much different than spam bots talking about bullshit technical analysis making people rich on discussion groups for stocks that I own or have an interest in. I don't necessarily "own" the roads either, but I still have a problem when I'm on a motorcycle and a girl in front of me stops in the middle of the road to yield the right of way to someone who doesn't have it. It's not like soccer and basketball which are played with different parts of the body. And in any case the only open wheel racing that is discussed here is in the context of JPM who is a nascar driver; it's not like we're talking about the glory days of CART. Kit, as far as I know you don't run this site therefore I'm not sure why you expect people to discuss only what matters to you. Heck out of the 100+ comments about this race, less than half actually pertain to what happened in the actual race. We've had comments about Terry Labonte, Dale Jr, JPM, Kulwicki etc. so discussions do branch out. You can't blame UPS for switching to Ragan. He showed a lot of promise towards the end of last year, however none of that momentum translated to this year. He's currently battling Paul Menard and David Stremme for last place among drivers who have run all the races. And about Sterling Marlin - the fact that he was so competitive from 2001-2002 totally debunks the "older drivers got scared after February 18, 2001" theory. And his team was not better at the end of the year. Prior to the Kansas crash, he finished dead last at Richmond which caused him to lose the point lead and it began a downward spiral for that time. He was 4th in points entering Kansas, so by no mean did he have the championship locked up. He probably would have finished top 5 in points though. 110. As if I wasn't already pissed off enough at NASCAR and their warning to Brad K at Kansas, NASCAR tried to clarify what they meant this weekend. And, in typical NASCAR fashion, they just made it worse. From Jayski: "NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said Friday afternoon that Keselowski was not warned because of contact with a competitor in the Chase For The Sprint Cup; the warning was one that NASCAR often gives to competitors when it feels contact is unnecessary. Keselowski had contact with #42-Juan Pablo Montoya during the race, drawing the attention of NASCAR. At the time, NASCAR said that Keselowski was told to be "aware and cognizant of who he was racing against at this particular point in the race." " Um, Robin, I hate to tell you this, but JPM IS THE ONE THAT WASHED UP THE TRACK AND DOOR SLAMMED BRAD. YOU SUITS IN DAYTONA BEACH ARE THE DUMBEST SONS OF BITCHES ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH!!!!!! Man, I hate these assholes. Was he even watching the race? Or was he counting how much money he is basically stealing from NASCAR because he sucks at his job (which is NASCAR's fault). It is just ridiculous. This isn't a sport anymore. It is a reality show. A pre-produced program. "It was more a young rookie driver racing like he was in the Nationwide or Truck series. That's how you race Friday and Saturday, but it's not how we race on Sunday" You are right Kit, that is a complete load of steaming shit. THAT is a big reason why the ratings are way down. He just wants people to follow in line like a parade. That is BORING!!! Oh yeah Tony, you race that way on Sunday, and that is why more and more people are using their Sunday's to do something besides watch a bunch of pu**y primadonnas that are coddled beyond belief run single file and bitch their whiny little heads off every time somebody doesn't roll over for them. It is sickening and pathetic. So Tony Stewart, whom I will for now on refer to as RHP (Rick Hendrick's Puppet), keep racing that way on Sunday so NASCAR can fall into obscurity the way your beloved IRL did. "Besides, who the f**k is Tony Stewart to tell anyone about having patience and not to be aggressive? How many on-track incidents has he had? He could probably rival Jeff Gordon's record if he wasn't so damn short-sighted on the track." Exactly. RHP might be the most talented DRIVER on the circuit. But as a RACER, he is average at best. He just has that incredible talent to carry him. With his talent, the team he had at JGR (and now at "SHR" which is really Hendrick Motorsports), and the amount of support he was given, RHP should be putting up Gordon numbers. Instead he clearly finds him clearly in the shadow of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Those two not only don't fall to pieces everytime something goes wrong in a race (unlike RHP) they actually use it as motivation to perform even better. They see it as a challenge to come back from. And that is why, when it is all said and done, RHP will be behind them in all time NASCAR rankings. 119. Kit posted: 10.10.2009 - 11:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Now that you mention it, I think RHP has that attitude because he came from a "follow the leader, stay in line" style of racing. Had he done more actual stock car racing at short tracks, where bumping and rubbing for position is common, he wouldn't be complaining as much. The whole incident with David Reutimann earlier this season, that's not really something a two-time champion (albeit one being a chase championship) should complain about. He should have just rolled with the punches. Legends in the sport dealt with bigger shit than that BEFORE they became successful and they didn't whine as much. "Exactly. RHP might be the most talented DRIVER on the circuit. But as a RACER, he is average at best. He just has that incredible talent to carry him." You could say the same thing about Danica Patrick except use "below average" instead. She can make laps in a car that goes 220 mph just fine, but as far as racing in the IRL, she can't do it at all. There's no way she's an average racer when she's only led literally less than one percent of her career IRL laps. The reason I bring her up is because now RHP and Dale Jr are courting with her for Nationwide. With RPH's attitude I mentioned above, he was stupid to go after a "follow the leader, stay in line" driver like Danica Patrick who really isn't a racer instead of Brad K, who is. Instead of bitching about Brad K, RHP should have him in a car. Dale Jr. doesn't know what he's doing, which is typical for a underachiever who's been about as successful as Casey Mears in a Hendrick car. Sure, he picked Martin Truex Jr. and Brad K., but their talent was obvious. RHP wouldn't have done shit in NASCAR had he been racing 20 or 30 years ago. Dale Jr. has talent, but he has to be coddled to bring it out. 120. 18fan posted: 10.10.2009 - 3:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I dislike Tony(RHP), but his Chase championship would've been his if there was no chase. If RHP and Dale Jr. have this mentality, it would explain why they are going after Danica Patrick. Brad K WILL get exposure and sponsorship based on just talent. He'll also grind out better finishes than Ryan Newman. This is the best thing to happen to Penske in a long time. "how she has the right mindset" She's the same driver who tries to start shit on pit road even though everyone know's she can't be serious. "He is the closest thing to Napoleon" Don't know, I think Kryle Busch has him beat, but yes, I'm starting to see a Napoleon complex in him. "We could go on and on about RHP's on track indisgressions. Then he acts like he is the authority on racing etiquette." RHP is a dipshit with talent. 134. Had he done more actual stock car racing at short tracks, where bumping and rubbing for position is common, he wouldn't be complaining as much." I've been away for a few days, so I know I'm late, but I really wanted to address this. This has to be one of the most ignorant statements that I've seen on this site. If one knows anything about Tony Stewart, it's that he came through the ranks in USAC. Guess where USAC races? SHORT TRACKS! He was racing side by side on pretty much a nightly basis. Iā??ve watched sprint car racing my entire life, and Iā??ve never seen anyone insist on ā??follow the leaderā? racing. Moreover, USAC races are sprint races, so it is imperative that the driver get through the field as quickly as possible. That's probably about the furthest thing from "staying in line" as possible. Really, the flat track stock car races are more "stay behind the leader" races because it's pretty much impossible to pass a car without bumping them out of the way. After USAC, he went to the IRL. One major reason why the IRL was formed (at least in rhetoric) was based on trying to bring back open-wheel racing from the "follow the leader" street circuits back to the ovals where side-by-side racing is possible. IRL races (with the exception of the 500), were pretty short, so there wasnā??t any staying behind the leader type racing, at least not anymore than NASCAR. The IRL always emphasizes side-by-side racing for the entire race, even more so than NASCAR. So tell me, which series did Tony come from that stressed "follow the leader" racing? Perhaps it was the "Made-up Racing Series To Try and Support a Weak Arguement Racing League." 135. jp posted: 01.07.2010 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Can someone upload the big wreck on UTube?? On Friday, Labonte qualified 26th for the race at a speed of 173.349 mph. Although the #71 team lacked sponsorship coming into the race, they gained sufficient sponsorship from Mahindra Tractors and Adobe Road Winery to run the entire race. The #71 gained similar last-minute sponsorship two weeks ago at New Hampshire where Labonte qualified 8th. On Sunday, Labonte was racing mid-pack when he was taken out in a multi-car wreck that brought out the second caution of the race on lap 7. The wreck began when Paul Menard's Ford lost control coming off turn two, causing him to slide up directly in front of David Ragan and Bobby Labonte, who were running nose-to-tail in the outside groove. Both had nowhere to go. As Ragan hit Menard, Labonte banged into the back of Ragan's Ford, then was clipped by Michael Waltrip, who was forced up into the wreck by Reed Sorenson. Labonte and Waltrip suffered the most damage in the incident and, for several laps, it appeared that Waltrip would finish last for the first time since last summer's Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono. However, when Waltrip returned to the race 80 laps down, Labonte did not, and Labonte finished last. Labonte completed just 6 laps. Last-place leader Dave Blaney finished 40th. Tony Raines was denied a chance at three straight last-place finishes when Kevin Hamlin stepped into car #37 to make his first Sprint Cup attempt. Hamlin failed to qualify on Friday, but will again be in car #37 in next week's Pepsi 500 at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. The finish was Bobby Labonte's second of 2009, and his first since his #96 DLP Ford fell out with engine problems at August's Carfax 400 at Michigan. Labonte now sits 10th on the all-time last-place rankings. It is also the third last-place finish for owner Kevin Buckler for The Racer's Group, the first for the #71 team since David Gilliland's CompUSA Chevrolet fell out with power steering problems in the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover back in May. It is also the first time the #71 has ever finished last in a Sprint Cup race at the Kansas Speedway. 2009 RANKINGS 1st) Dave Blaney (8) 2nd) Tony Raines (4) 3rd) Mike Bliss, Patrick Carpentier, David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte, Joe Nemechek (2) 4th) Tony Ave, Todd Bodine, P.J. Darnell was a talented racer but driving for Hall of Fame there was little chance to do better than that. Still a shame he didn't get a better shot at the big time. 140.
