Shrub almost had the weekend sweep wrapped up before running out of gas. Usually I would have laughed, but this time I actually felt bad for him. And just when everyone thought Johnson had the championship all wrapped up, he gets wrecked in the opening laps! He almost had the car saved though. After how he lucked into a top ten last week, I don't feel an ounce of sympathy for him. Sucked that Carl Edwards was caught up when JPM lost it. 6. Kyle Busch's attempt at winning all three of this weekend's races comes up a bust after he ran out of gas with two to go...not that anyone cares. Nice to see the blue deuce in victory, and another backwards victory lap by Kurt. 8. Kurt Busch has a special, where a "lucky" fan will win, $1,000,000, if Kurt should win the race. So Kurt, Who has not led this many laps for a long long time, goes out and dominates and wins the race, JUST SO HAPPENING ON THE SAME DAY, HE HAS A LUCKY FAN TO WIN, ONE MILLION DOLLARS? I don't think so, I'm done with Nascar, and all of its crap, Nascar fans need to wake up and break free, of the NASCAR TRANCE. Wale up and boycott. It is the only way to get the sport, back to the WAY IT SHOULD BE 9. Sean posted: 11.08.2009 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Disagree. He had a similarly strong car at Atlanta (same type of track). Also, Kyle had the dominant car today. Penske just nails the setup a few times a year while being relatively mediocre the rest of the season. They've been like this more or less since 2003, their last good season. 10. 18fan posted: 11.08.2009 - 9:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle had his fifth win of the year locked up until he ran out of gas and had trouble getting his car restarted and finished 11th as this race is a fuel mileage race for the second straight year. It's looking good for next year between Kyle and Dave Rodgers. 11. 18fan posted: 11.08.2009 - 9:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, Kyle joins Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson as the only drivers to lead 1,000 laps this year, although Jimmie needs about 25 to reach 2,000 laps led. 12. DaleSrFanForever posted: 11.08.2009 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well, at least Sideways Sam doesn't discriminate. He drives out of control no matter who he is around. He had to get his regular two spins a race in, and one of them took out Johnson. And sorry ESPN commentators, that was not Reutimann's fault. Sam was losing it well before Reut got to him. Oh well, at least he made the points battle slightly more interesting. Now instead of JJ clinching it at Phoenix, he'll probably have to wait until 3 cars fall out at Homestead. Seriously though, Sam is destroying his legacy. He is one of the best open wheelers ever, but he will probably be mostly remembered for being the guy that couldn't keep from spinning out in NASCAR. It was a valiant effort by Kryle to pull off the "historic" triple this weekend, but his foot was too heavy. And in case you guys didn't hear it the 319 times the ESPN crew mentioned, it would have been truly historic. Because SO many people have tried to run triple duty weekend after weekend after weekend. Too bad, we could have told our grandchildren about how we witnessed history. The point I'm trying to make is that it would have been historic. Montoya takes out himself and Edwards. He had a pretty good car, and lost it. Classy move by Carl in his interview not blaming Juan. I hope JPM takes note of that. He is still mad at Mark for "hitting" him at Charlotte after somebody in front spun their tires, because as we all know, that was totally just Mark hitting the crap out of him for no reason. This season can't end soon enough. 13. Eric posted: 11.08.2009 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @8. Anonymous Kurt Busch lead 234 laps at the first race at Atlanta This year. You're right, I've been critical of several drivers, but the only one I have really said sucked talent-wise has been Michael Waltrip and maybe one or two others like Paul Menard. The other drivers I'm critical of mainly on other issues, like Stewart's tantrums and Dale Jr's mental regression. Then there's drivers I've never been critical of like Kahne and Reutimann. I didn't post #16 either. I'm really happy that Jimmie Johnson wrecked. Like someone said, best moment of 2009. Unfortunately the guy in second is Mark Martin, who'll find a way to choke. Hopefully Johnson will give the championship away. "I'm guessing the person impersonating Kit here is the same person who did so on the Ken Schrader page, declaring him "one of the worst drivers statistically to ever race", which sounded fishy to me since he usually reserves phrases like that for Waltrip, and I figured Schrader was the kind of old-school driver he'd like or be tactful about at least." Thanks for pointing that out. Whoever posted that wasn't me. Schrader is actually one of my favorite drivers and yeah, he is the kind of old school driver I'd like. Schrader is a straight up race car driver. He's in it for the love of racing more than anything. There's too many drivers nowadays who'll "mail it in" just for a paycheck, like Newman and Harvick. "Penske just nails the setup a few times a year while being relatively mediocre the rest of the season. They've been like this more or less since 2003, their last good season." No kidding. Kurt's #97 was a better ride. When Kurt got to the #2, it was a real ego bruiser to him I think. His behavior settled down. "Yep, Juan's got to be kicking himself for missing a great opportunity to close the gap on Jimmie." This is why I have said JPM has gotten a little too much praise this season. When he has a shot at winning or otherwise gaining ground, he screws up. 28. Anonymous posted: 11.08.2009 - 9:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "This is the real Kit. What kills me is that he fussed his way out of the #97 and Roush Racing by making a big public stink about trying to get out of his contract early so he could go to Penske Racing, but he's spent his entire time there criticizing the organization. How many times have they played audio of his radio with him specifically criticizing the organization? A ton. Just last week at Talladega he did it again. Hey genius, you are the one who wanted to move there so freaking bad. Man I can't stand Kurt! He's had at least one win in his last 8 seasons, tied with Johnson and only behind Tony Stewart's 11. He already had a win this year but it's impressive enough to mention again. Denny Hamlin was mid pack most of the race but fuel mileage got him his 13th top five of the season, a new career high. After the terrible luck he's had lately he deserved it. Kenseth got his third top 3 finish in the Chase. Still inconsistent but the team is showing signs of life, something that was missing for the 24 races after Kenseth won the first two races. Mark Martin's 13 top fives are the most he's had in a season since 2000, and 20 top tens are the most since 2002 when he was runner-up in the points. Kevin Harvick got his 60th career top five after running out of fuel but making it to the checkered flag. Unfortunately this is still going to go down as the worst season if his career; he's 21st in points now and finished 21st in points in 2002 but had a win that year. Clint Bowyer got his 60th career top ten. Biffle has back-to-back top tens for the first time since he had 3 straight back in April. Jeff Burton has back-to-back top tens for the first time this season, plus it was his 220th career top ten. Allmendinger makes it back-to-back races that an RPM car finishes in the top ten in it's first race as a Ford (Sadler finished 9th at Talledega). It ended a bad 4 race streak of 33rd, 23rd, 34th and 33rd. So far so good for RPM's switch to Ford. This is the first time Kyle Busch has led over 100 laps in a race since the Coke 600 back in May. This is also the first time he's put together 4 straight top 20 finishes this season with an 8th, 4th, 15th and 11th. This is the reason why he missed the Chase. Scott Speed got his first top 20 finish since Bristol in August and it was a rare instance where Scott ran as well if not better than Logano and finished ahead of him. Scott won ROTR for it, him 18th and Logano 19th. Carl Edward's second finish of 39th in the last 4 races has put his average finish for the season at a career-low 15.3, also with career lows in top fives and top tens. Carl still has a top ten percentage over 50% though. Sam Hornish Jr.'s last 4 races have gone 40th, 36th, 40th and 40th. It's really hard to argue in favour of him when he's having so many problems but he finished top 10 in the first Phoenix so hopefully he can get back on track. And two top fives is still more than what Stremme has done in his entire 108 race career. 48. SoxFan24 posted: 11.09.2009 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not going to lie. I let out a big cheer when I saw the 48 go crashing into the wall. Of course ESPN had to jump on David Reutimann and blame him for the crash when "Sideways" Sam clearly lost it (AGAIN)and got into to Jimmie. In Sam's defense, Jimmie could not save the car and wouldnt' have gotten into trouble if Sam wasn't on the low side of the track. So everyone gets excited about Jimmie dropping and what does the 24 team do? Lay an egg. They totally missed the set up on that car. Maybe if they wasn't worried about sending crew members to work on the 48 car (which clearly they were working on that car) then they could've worried about getting that car right. Gordon almost got lapped at one time during this race and only got that 13th place finish due to Ambrose, Busch and others running out of fuel late. Now while Gordon is having trouble, I just want to comment on how ATROCIOUS ESPN's coverage of this race was. Yes Jimmie Johnson is in the garage area and its a big deal but we are giving a countdown of how long he's in the garage? They focused on him for 5 minutes during green flag racing. Not to take anything at all away from Chad Knaus and that team for getting that car back on the track after all that damage but they went completely overboard on covering the "golden boy of Nascar" Jimmie Johnson crash damage repair. Juan Pablo Montoya crashed too. He got a short interview and then nothing on the 5th place points man!! So lets go back to the race itself. Great runs for Reutimann, Ambrose, Burton and Dale Jr. Would you have known that if you hadn't listened to PRN's coverage of the race? No because ESPN shows a wrecked car getting repaired in the garage all race. They did acknowledge these great runs with their "through the field" segment. This surprised me about Ambrose because one of ESPN's commentators just happens to own that car. The race comes down to fuel mileage (big surprise) and what happens is we start having guys run out of gas. Poor Dale Jr. I really feel for the guy because he did run good the whole race and ran out of gas. He has run better lately but just hasn't had the luck. Anyways, Kurt Busch wins after Kyle dominates and runs out of gas. Kurt did not "luck" up and win this race because a guy just happened to would have won a million dollars from the sponsor of the race. Kurt ran in the top 5 all race long and also led a good portion of the race. But in all of this, who does ESPN interview first? The freaking 38th place finisher. Absolutely rediculous. Interview the winning crew chief and driver first and even the top 5 finishers if you can't get to the winner. Kevin Harvick finished 5th and no interview (he might have left the track like Kyle Busch but still interview his crew chief about his great top 5 run) They talk to the 38th place finisher who was over a hundered laps down!!! Yes he's the three time defending champion and yes he had a comfortable point lead and yes he has made the CHASE closer but guess what he's still going to win the championship and his lead is still comfortable. I think its time for this current group of ESPN commentators to go. Allen Bestwick should be calling the race because he is damn good at it. He's quick, knowledgeable and knows racing. Not to say Punch doesn't but I think he'd be more suited for the roundtable or whatever they call their pre-race show. Dale Jarrett is fine where he's at and he had the guts to call out NASCAR on their stupid ass rule from last week and said it was a boring race. Rusty Wallace is a joke. He has nothing to add to the broadcast if his son isn't in the race and please dont' get me started on the clowns they have doing pit reporting. Vince Welsh is an Indy Car guy. Jamie Little and Shannon Spake know nothing about NASCAR and are there only for sex appeal. Dave Burns is the only one worth being in the pits. Bring back John Kernan and hire Wendy Venturini from SPEED because she actually knows NASCAR and brings something to the broadcast. Sorry about the rant I'm done lol 49. The fact that the networks paid $2.4 billion (I believe that was the figure) meant that the networks felt they had to get the most on their investment. Thus, we see more commercialization and promos for stuff that has nothing to do with NASCAR. I can't blame NASCAR too much, as I've read that Disney/ESPN were very arrogant during negotiations, and gave a rather lowball figure compared to the FOX and NBC/Turner offers. CBS has all it wants and needs (NFL, NCAA Tournament, and the Masters). In addition, David Hill (President of FOX) despises actually covering a sport by itself, instead prefering to resort to hokey gimmicks to try and lure the "casual fan" (a term that is quite oxymoronic). Thus, the network that brought the glowing puck to NHL covergae and talking baseballs to MLB games gave NASCAR fans "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity", talking gophers, Hollywood Hotel, and other gimmicks. When DW wants to act like an adult, there aren't too many people that can bring what he brings to a telecast. It's when he becomes a self-promoting caricature of himself that he becomes annoying. Same goes for Larry Mac. I didn't mind the Shaheen, Dallenbach, and Petty team this year. The sad thing about all of this is, it seems like all the networks feel as though they must do what Fox does. That's what NBC did, and that's what ESPN does now. Honestly, do we need 12 people covering a Cup race? They feel like they have to "one up" each other in terms of the amount of coverage, ignoring the old addage "less is more." Then again, ESPN usually has about 12 on-air people involved in MNF, so this problem isn't exclusive to NASCAR. I didn't have too much hope that ESPN would cover NASCAR like they did in the 90s. By this time, ESPN became the network of Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti, Colin Cowherd, Steve Phillips, etc. Believe you me, you're not the only one who harkens back to the days of Bob, Benny, and Ned; or Eli Gold and Buddy Baker; or Ken Squier and anybody. True professionals they were. Coincidentally, I'm watching a promo for the 24/7 Series that HBO will make about Jimmie Johnson. I want to see how HBO will attempt to actually make people care about JJ, but they've do it for several boxers over the years. The Pacquiao/Cotto editions have been great. 53. DaleSrFanForever posted: 11.10.2009 - 12:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Great posts RR and SoxFan. Those are all excellent points. They just need to keep it simple. We are race fans who tune in to see a RACE. FOX and ESPN treat it like a Hollywood spectacle. Sometimes I get the feeling that the race is just a backdrop to the "event". RR, you are right about David Hill. He is so out of touch with sports fans, it is unreal. Their baseball coverage has experienced several of the same annoyances. Look, if you don't like baseball or racing, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TUNE INTO A BASEBALL GAME OR RACE!!! Period. Best case scenario you get somebody to say "Hey, what's all this fuss about" and tune in, only to quickly tune out. So not only can they not hold the casual fans (yes RR, very oxymoronic) they irritate the longtime fans which are the backbone of the sport. The worst thing to happen to NASCAR was the initial spike in interest of the sport when the cha$e was invented. Ratings were initially huge, so NASCAR did all they could to add as many gimmicks as possible because they only saw $$$ signs. But as the years have passed, those casual fans realized "Hey, I really don't like racing" and quit tuning in. They need to realize that there are people who will simply never like racing. As much as I love racing, anytime anyone says to me that they can't stand it, I never argue. It isn't for everyone. It has a distinct flavor that some people really like and some people will choke on. NASCAR and the TV networks have watered down the flavor so much to get the people who were choking to tune in but they have disgusted the true fans. Now they have no casual fans and most of the true longtime fans have given up on it. That is what David Hill doesn't understand. In response to many fans complaints of later start times, he said he wants them to be LATER!!! Wake up asshole. YOU don't tell US what we want, WE tell YOU, and YOU comply. Brian France has the same complex. When told of the widespread criticism of the cha$e he says condescending crap like "people just don't like change". OF COURSE WE DON'T LIKE CHANGE!!! If we are tuning into something regularly, we obviously like what we are seeing. So of course we don't like change. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!! SoxFan, you are right about the old ESPN team. They set the standard. With Bob Jenkins, Ned, and Benny in the booth, and John Kernan and Jerry Punch on pit road, that was the best. They commentated casually, like they were sitting on out couch talking right to us. They didn't talk down to us like they do nowadays. (Michael Waltrip is the absolute worst at this, like he has any room to talk down to ANYONE). They treated it like a RACE. Not a spectacle. If I were interested in spectacles, I would watch every one of the 5,000 award shows for movies, TV and music held each year. Those are just a bunch of famous people gathering for the sake of a bunch of famous people gathering. NASCAR is about drivers and teams RACING and COMPETING against each other. Sorry, I know this was a long winded and rambling post, but I have so much I want to say about this. I need to write a book. 54. Smokefan05 posted: 11.10.2009 - 3:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) TNT is the best in my opinion. The "wide open" coverage is the best thing in my opinion. We the "fans" get too see racing and the sponsers get their air time without cutting out the fans every 5 minutes for commericals. FOX was good before DW and Larry started acting like kids. Mike Joy has stayied about the same. ESPN has gotten worse. Rusty has no business being at the racetrack besides to run his team. Not to do commentary. DJ and Andy are great. Before Larry and DW went downhill they were a team, now Andy and DJ are the ONLY ex-driver and ex-CC that work. Ralph, Wally and Kyle are just a blast too listen too. Digger was created by FOX, not NASCAR. Some fans need to get that right. "YOU don't tell US what we want, WE tell YOU, and YOU comply." It doesn't work that way. Every fan has a different opinion on things, if NASCAR tryied to make everyone happy (they can't do that, if they try too make one group of fans happy they will PO anyother group off. It's a lose-lose for NASCAR) The sport would have changed ALOT more than has now. Ken Scrader said it best on Windtunnel "it amazes me on how many people have figured this sport out from the couch." 55. Anonymous posted: 11.10.2009 - 6:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Television commentary has a problem for years like it was mentioned. It was great during the 90's, but it went downhill. Here are my thoughts on each station: Speed- has some dumbshits doing play by play for the truck series. One of them even made the comment it takes the trucks to fun more fuel to run under yellow than under green! Micheal Waltrip is a terrible commentator. Fox - Everyone hates David Hill with a passion for a reason. Digger is one of the worse things ever created by Fox. They even denied Digger was created for merchandise purposes. How do you explain the merchandise being sold than? Darrell Waltrip and Larry aren't great play by play announcers. Darrell is known to have a crush on certain drivers and a conflict of interest. Tnt - Bill Weber being gone is the best ever happen to them. Weber made NBC hard to watch for Nascar races before going to TNT. Kyle is a great replacement for the late Benny Parsons. I hope Ralph Espn - This is not the Station I grew up with back in the 1980's and 1990's. Espn changed for the worse since than as a whole. Espn has terrible personal on shows outside of Nascar even like having Skip Bayless on. They even screw up Monday Night Football even worse than it was on ABC. Nascar Broadcasts are down in quality and shouldn't be a shock. The tv angles are not great. Jerry Punch is a better pit report than a play by play guy. Rusty isn't made to be on television. Brad has a racing background like building cars and being a former Nascar owner, but you don't believe it by seeing him on television in terms of knowledge. 56. 18fan posted: 11.10.2009 - 6:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) When the tracks got to chose what network covered their races(as was the case before the huge deal of 2001), it was better. Jerry Punch was one of the best pit reporters of all time, yet ESPN puts him in the booth and he sucks. I personally think the best announcers are Mike Joy, Kyle Petty, Dale Jarrett, and Andy Petree. I like Petree because he explains things from the crew chief perspective in ways people who aren't mechanics can understand. ESPN also uses the tech garage with Tim Brewer, who does a good job, way too often. ESPN should have put Allen Bestwick in the booth and Jerry Punch on pit road. Chris Myers for FOX is the worst, then Rusty. I miss Buddy Baker, Ned Jarrett, Neil Bonnett(RIP), Benny Parsons(RIP), Ken Squier, and Bob Jenkins. I hated Dick Bergerren(sp?) in the booth. He was like Jerry Punch, good pit reporter, awful broadcaster. 57. Anonymous posted: 11.10.2009 - 8:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree with putting Allen Bestwick in the both for Jerry Punch. Allen shouldn't have been replaced by Bill Weber a first place back in the NBC days. I agree with Chris Myers being bad for being on a Nascar broadcast. I agree with Kyle Petty Dale Jarret, Andy Petree and Mike Joy being the best announcers for Nascar currently. Larry is made to do a spot like Tim Brewer does. Larry is great at TNT, but he is not made to be an announcer. 58. They did a great job by picking stations. The Busch Series had most of their races on TNN because TNN did not carry College football or college basketball and a lot of times it was because of those games that would cause a tape delay in the races. Sports coverage on TV right now is not very good. ESPN has a bunch of clowns that work them. Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti just to name a few. Monday Night Football has been ruined in the past. This current group of Mike Tirico, Ron Jawarski and Jon Gruden actually isn't that bad. Tirico is great, Jaws is very knowledegable and Gruden is a former coach that doesn't put himself over. That leads me to some very questionable announcers. Allow me to analyze each announce Michael Waltrip is the king of putting himself over. Well let me tell you my Aaron's Dream Machine was 20th fastest in practice..Nobody gives a damn about you and your mediocre career. Shut up and announce please. He demeans whoever is watching the broadcast. Those that watch are usually very educated on the sport hence why they watch it. For the new viewers that tune in even for the first time don't have to be told everything like a child. If I hear something else about MWR or David Reutimann on a Truck broadcast ( Waltrip has no truck in that series or driver so it shouldn't be assumed that he does) I am going to pull my hair out Phil Parsons: Parsons was an underated driver and isnt' a bad commentator but the fact that he lies about owning MSRP and Prism racing totally removes any relavance that he has. Two start and park legends. I'll save the start and park debate for another post. Rick Allen: Rick Allen should be the successor for Mike Joy when he retires. Allen has a great speaking voice and has the ability to call the race. Alas!! calling the race!!! Wendy Venturini: Her family owns an ARCA team but unlike Waltrip doesn't pimp that team every 5 minutes. She is very intelligent about the sport and does a great job on Speed Adam Alexander: Was on radio for many years and does a good job in the pits Ray Dunlap: Used to be on ESPN and also does a good job (No complaints for pit reporters Bill Weber: Much better pit reporter than commentator. Doesn't get that excited about the races and after his incident this summer we may not hear him anymore in the booth Ralph Sheheen: Very underated announcer. Does great with World of Outlaws and when given the chance like he did this Summer did awesome in the booth. Also a very good pit reporter. Lots of energy Kyle Petty: All around nice guy and has been doin NASCAR broadcasts since 94' Also very good Wally Dallenbach: Wasn't very good as a driver but adds a lot to the broadcast with his insight and doesn't make the viewer feel dumb by demeaning them Larry McReynolds: Gets on my nerves. Yes Larry we know the caution is out when that Yellow flag flashes on the screen and when Mike Joy points that out to us arleady. Needs to go Matt Yocum: Best pit reporter in the business next to Steve Byrnes. From 01-06 worked every weekend with Fox/NBC. Gets to the point and asks the tough questions to the crew chief and unlike Little and Spake doesn't ask stupid questions such as "Now that you are in the top 5 do you race differently" Of course you don't . The key is to win the damn race!! Steve Byrnes: See Matt Yocum Dr Dick : See Yocum and Byrnes. Not a good color commentator but a damn good pit reporter Darrell Waltrip: Just like his brother but when he is serious he offers good insight Mike Joy: He is the best in the business right now. Former pit reporter and just calls the race and shows genuine emotion. (2001 Atlanta Spring race is a prime example of this) I'm sure I'm leaving out some but I grade Speed a -B, TNT a B FOX a C because of that annoying Digger. No one gives a crap about Digger I dont' know who they are trying to accomidate by this. My own neices and nephews (who are kids) hate digger and want them to concentrate on the race. Everytime i see Digger I just want to rake my eyes out. That camera wasnt' anything that anyone hasnt' done before. CBS used to do it. ESPN used to do it. This leads me to ESPN. Besides Burns, Punch DJ and Petree the rest of that crew sucks. The pit reporters besides Burns are the worst set of pit reporters in NASCAR history. ESPN gets a D for their coverage and the fact that they only focus on the top 5. Fox isn't immune to that either but ESPN is worse. I miss the days of Ned Benny and Ned, Ken Squier and Buddy Baker, Even Eli Gold and Buddy Baker. Remember how good Neil Bonnett was?? The TV coverage was so much better when the producers didn't hire greedy announcers, bad pit reporters and pointless gimmicks. Of course if NASCAR offered a better on track product like eliminating that stupid wing off the COT and the splitters then the networks wouldn't have to "Digger" up the broadcasts to attract viewers. NASCAR which I've loved since I was 5 years old needs a lot of work. Sorry again for the long post but I had a lot on that topic I wanted to add and see what yall thought of it 59. I had forgot about Dick Bergrenn (I don't know how it's spelled either) in the booth. That was pretty bad. But on pit road and doing direct driver interviews, he is excellent. He has a true pasion for the sport of auto racing that doesn't come across in the booth. I think being down there in the pits, in the middle of it all, it gets his juices flowing. As far as Jerry Punch, he never shed his pit reporter niche. He is not very good at play by play and tends to ask too many questions to DJ and Andy. He needs to just sit back, and let the race tell the story. Allen Bestwick was great in the booth with play by play. Put him back. And Rick Allen does great as a lead announcer. And I thought Ralph Shaheen did great with Kyle and Wally and TNT. Hopefully they use him for all the TNT races next season. I don't know how in the hell Michael Waltrip keeps his job as a Truck announcer. He is SO annoying. He just tries to take over a telecast, and he flat out sucks. Like you said, it is more about him than the race. And he totally sucked as a driver. He needs to just go away. Same with Chris Myers and Bill Weber. I don't have one ounce of respect for wither of those two. I was so glad Weber got suspended. His play by play sucked and he is a total prick. And Chris Myers could give a damn less about NASCAR, and that comes across. After 10 years of announcing NASCAR races, he still seems like he has no idea what is going on. I think TNT is hands down the best right now, and they only get 6 of the 36 races. Kyle and Wally are a blast to listen to. They make fun of themselves and how bad they did in certain parts of their careers (Wally his entire stock car career and Kyle from 1997 onwards) and aren't afraid to speak their minds. ESPN needs to be totally overhauled. Keep DJ and Andy, put AB in the booth, Dr Jerry on pit road, keep Dave Burns and fire the other three reporters. Keep Tim Brewer and give him more voice time cause he can be hilarious and informal. Don't let Rusty, Brad Daughtery, or Ray Evernham anywhere near a microphone. 61. It surprises me about Chris Myers because when he was with ESPN he was great at hosting "outside the lines" but after a decade almost he still doesn't really grasp racing. I hope Bill Weber doesn't not get retained by TNT. He really is a prick by throwing a fit over a hotel room or whatever it was that got him suspended. In my personal opinion I think Johnny Benson (if he doesnt' get a fulltime ride somewhere) would be a great addition to any broadcast booth. When he filled in for Michael Waltrip he was great at just analyzing the race. I also think Randy Lajoie and Ricky Craven would be good if given the chance to work a race. Twenty years ago, when the TV coverage and the cars were simpler, the show and the racing was a hell of a lot better. Now I feel like I'm watching some sort of scripted commercial or something. My disdain for several drivers like Dale Jr., Waltrip, and Stewart to a lesser extent revolves around all this. Gone are the days where drivers like Ricky Rudd and Harry Gant who only cared about racing and didn't give a flying f**k about the media, t-shirt sales, interviews on morning TV shows, etc. Racing back then had something to offer as an alternative to stick and ball sports. He had great momentum for a year or so before Earnhardt died. I thought at the time that he would be a more serious threat for titles than Junior (maybe that's not saying a lot). Obviously, his Darlington wreck ruined that, as when he came back, he didn't do anywhere near as well as say Irvan did, but besides if a team can win the Daytona 500 with Mikey, winning with Steve Park anywhere (since I thought he was the best of the three) should not be a surprise. I was HIGHLY suspicious of Junior's win in the Pepsi 400 that year though as he was passing cars by himself supposedly on three-quarters throttle, unheard of for a plate track, especially in that era after all the wicker-bill races where anyone could pass anyone at random. I would say the 24 team is probably better than the 88 and the 39 as well (while Gordon is superior to Junior and Newman, I don't think that makes ALL the difference), but I too think Letarte is overrated as crew chief, and inferior to not only Knaus, but also Gustafson and Grubb. Robbie Loomis did not nearly get enough credit at Hendrick or in general. Loomis got a bum rap because he replaced Dale Inman at Petty Enterprises and Ray Evernham at Hendrick, neither of which a crew chief would necessarily want to be compared to. But Loomis did great stuff at Petty Enterprises bringing it back into contention in the late '90s with Bobby Hamilton...he placed a #43 car that probably was not that good in the top ten (not to discredit Hamilton, who also overachieved). There's a reason he was hired by the #24 team in the first place. Letarte simply isn't as good as Loomis, who wasn't as good as Evernham (although I think Loomis was closer to Evernham than to Letarte). And now Knaus is here and he is as good as Evernham was, and people wonder why Jimmie Johnson is the dominant force for Hendrick? 79. DEI was great at non plate tracks from 2001 to 2004 in terms equipment. Steve Park was proven to be very good at Driver's tracks from before Rockingham with it starting at his Watkin's Glen win in 2000. Darrell Waltrip consider 1 mile track, short tracks, and Darlington Darlington Driver's tracks. Steve from his Watkin's Glen win in 2000 to his Darlington crash, he was a threat to win. Steve had the best car at the 2001 Brickyard 400, but pit strategy got him. I think if Steve Park didn't have his career altered injury, he would have been a champion by 2005. Steve was the best of the 3 DEI drivers overall. His weakness was plate racing. DEI had great equipment from 2001 to 2004. In my mind, If Ricky Craven was the driver of the 55 instead of Micheal Waltrip, Craven would have gotten a couple top 10 in points finishes and more wins than Micheal. The only thing that would be a conspiracy is some of the plate races from 2001 to 2004 with DEI. The plate package was easy for anyone to pass even at Daytona, a plate track known for handling. The catch is DEI was more stronger than anyone else at plate racing at those two tracks before Jeff Gordon won at Dega at 2004. 80. I got used to Micheal being in the 55 car since 2006. Bobby Hamilton Sr. drove the 55 car in 2001 and 2002 for Andy Petree. My point was equipment at DEI, but Micheal Waltrip was under performing and was the weakest of the 3 DEI drivers. 82. The #1 found a good set up on that track despite who the driver is. The other 2 DEI cars didn't do good at Rockingham due to the following facts: 1.) Dale Jr. really sucked at racing at Rockingham outside of him final time there. 2.) Micheal Waltrip is a more of a plate driver than anything else. Dale Sr. screwed up for hiring a driver for the 15 car. Bobby Hamilton Sr and Ricky Craven were available for the 15 ride. Those two drivers overachieve in equipment. Rockingham was Craven's best track imo. He had 9 top top finshes in 19 starts there. Craven a top 3 car in the spring Race of 2001, but the pit crew was the problem. Bobby Hamilton Sr. was a good driver on the track also. 84. Anonymous posted: 11.13.2009 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Micheal Waltrip is a more of a plate driver than anything else. Did I ever say Dale was perfect? He put him in the #15 car because he was friends with him (for reasons I'll never understand) and just wanted to do him a favor. It was a big mistake (even with the two Daytona 500 wins) that was one of the reasons DEI never became the powerhouse it was capable of being, along with Park getting badly hurt right as he was about to break through and Dale Jr, despite winning a lot, making just as many bad mistakes that prevented a real title run for him. Then, without Dale, the manangement at DEI made blunder after blunder. They held on to Mikey for way too long, put Steve Park back in the car WAY too soon after his injury, and let the one person who could keep Dale Jr somewhat focused (Tony Sr) move to a different position. In my opinion, if Dale could have made those manangement decisions he would have canned Mikey probably after 2002 when it became apparent he sucked everywhere except the plate tracks even in superior equipment and got a real driver in that car, would have found a full time replacement for Steve Park, and rode Dale Jr's ass constantly until he either manned up and focused until he became the driver he is capable of being or quit. 90. For only the second time in 2009, Kevin Buckler's TRG Motorsports team attempted to get two cars into a NASCAR Sprint Cup field. The team brought two cars to Watkins Glen in August for the Heluva Good! at the Glen, but while Andy Lally made his NASCAR debut in the team's flagship #71, David Gilliland was unable to get the #70 into the show. On Friday at Texas, Mike Skinner was in the #70 and, despite a lack of sponsorship, qualified an impressive 23rd at a speed of 188.844 mph. It was Skinner's first Cup start since the Carfax 400 at Michigan back in August. Last-place leader Dave Blaney, 2nd-place Tony Raines, and 3rd-place Mike Bliss all failed to qualify while Joe Nemechek, tied with Raines for 2nd, made the field. While point leader Jimmie Johnson crashed out just 3 laps into the race and held the 43rd spot for much of the race, Skinner, who fell out on lap 7, inherited last place soon after Johnson returned to the track on lap 115. Teammate Bobby Labonte finished 31st in car #71 while Nemechek finished 42nd. Johnson barely missed the bottom five and finished 38th. With the exception of his early exit from the Gatorade Duels at Daytona back in February, the race was Skinner's first last-place finish in more than three years. That finish came in the 2006 Bank of America 500 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway where his Bryan Mullet-owned #72 Dutch Quality Stone Chevrolet was involved in a multi-car wreck on lap 2. It is the first last-place finish for the #70 since Max Papis crashed out of the 2008 Centurion Boats at the Glen in his HAAS Automation Chevrolet. It is the first last-place finish for the #70 at the Texas Motor Speedway. For much of NASCAR Sprint Cup history, the #70 was driven by the late J.D. McDuffie, one of the sport's most prolific owner-drivers. All but four of McDuffie's record 32 last-place finishes came while driving the #70. Kyle Busch ran out of fuel with 3 laps to go and it ruined his chance at the first-ever trifecta (a weekend sweep, when one driver wins the Truck, Xfinity and Cup race in one weekend). Kurt Busch pitted 2 laps later than him and managed to save enough fuel to win. I also like, when races can end this way. NASCAR is simply the best at this, because there are a lot of ways how you can win a race - normally by holding all your opponents off, via rain, photo finish, fuel mileage finish, ... 110. When you look at his wins by track, Bristol stands out, Richmond he has a lot, and every track he probably has at least 1 that got away, but Texas is one I don't normally think of him being great at, but he's got some wins there and multiple that got away 112. At least 280 wins across all 3 series and just 20 away from 300. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
