I'm sure somehow he'll be blamed for another shot of bad luck, because if it could happen to anyone by chance, Brad must be the wrong one. Kevin Harvick's moment of impatience cost both him AND Martin Truex Jr. a shot at the 500. Congrats to Jamie McMurray, further proving that Jack Roush made the wrong choice in regards to which driver to get rid of. 6. The best piece of driving I have ever seen out of him. I'm gonna wait until after Fontana to say Jr's back but after Daytona he proves he still has the competitive fire to get it done. Great job to McMurray though, he drove a great race. 7. Cooper posted: 02.14.2010 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) No one will ever forget this one. These are one of the races you tell you're kids... "I watched that Daytona 500, from Noon to Night". New Nascar Rule: "All races must be delayed for potholes" Also longest Daytona 500 in history. 520 miles. Way to go Jamie "Big" Mac. I feel so lucky to be able to watch this race. 52 lead changes on a track that was chewed up, and no big one. Amazing race by all drivers. Congrats to all drivers who competed in this historic Daytona 520. 8. Smokefan05 posted: 02.14.2010 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Car #1 is position #1. ALWAYS GOOD TOO SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 82 team made a ballsy call. Jr. came from where? Paul Menard came from where? NASCAR's plate package and rule package work. Without the delays, the racing was awsome. Some of the best i've ever seen. NASCAR, good call. Now on to the negative stuff: The track needs too be repaved. With floridas weather, all the racing (like 5 different racing series goes there too race or more) the track NEEDS TOO BE REPAVED NOW!!!!!!!! I'll admit, the way the track is now, it's like Darlinton all over again. You see guys sawing on the wheel earning their paychecks it's great. But when the track comes apart then do something. The first patch attempt was a fail, the second attempt worked too perfection. It held up, but seriously REPAVE THE RACE TRACK!!!!!!!!! The fans wanted more than one attempt at GWC, they got a wreckfest. All because the fans whinied about the Shootout not finishing under green. Well this race finished under green. After 2 tries, so i hope for those of you got what you wantied, i hope your happy. It wasn't Gateway 04 (thank god for limit of 3). 9. Tons of great racing, tons of lead changes (Three more than the 01 Daytona 500), and tons of all around excitement. Easilly the greatest speedweeks I've ever witnessed. Congrats to Jamie Mac! Roush must be kicking himself right now! Way to show him! Driver of the Race: Junior, Junior, JUNIOR! 16th to 10th on the 2nd to last restart (and all in two turns mind you) and then 10th to 2nd in the final sprint to the finish! Reject of the Race: The Track. If they don't repave this by July, then the officials are retarded. I refuse to wait a combined total of three hours to have them repave the track again (Even though the finish was totally worth it!) 11. Bud Shootout, photo finishes in BOTH Twins, and a "darkhorse" wins the Daytona 500. The Busch, Trucks, & Arca races were great too! 12. I think Jamie has to be considered one of the best plate drivers out there. I think was a matter of time before the came apart. I took a tour of Daytona International Speedway back in 2000. The track had signs of a track that need to get repaved. I know Daytona is going to be repaved in a couple years, but the track needs it right now. Daytona hasn't been repaved since the year I was born. That is too long for a race track. The France Family updated Daytona International Speedway through the years except for repaving the track. 13. Great move by Jr. coming from 10th to second on the last lap,the big test for him will be California but for now at least he's off to a good start. Tough break for Brad K,his first full season with Penske gets off to a rough start after he cuts a tire and spins collecting Regan Smith, Max Papis and teammate Sideways Sam. The track definitely needs to be repaved, granted it wasn't like the "weapers" at Auto Club but with all the different series that go racing there just stopping the race to put in a patch or two ain't gonna cut it. All in all a great race,52 lead changes and though there were quiet a few wrecks there was no big one or cars getting turned over. 14. SoxFan24 posted: 02.14.2010 - 9:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A fitting conclusion to quite possibly the best Speedweeks from Daytona in history. A fantastic Bud Shootout, dramatic Duels, action packed Nationwide race, terrific truck race and fitting of its name a great "great american race". 52 lead changes on a damaged race track and no big one that took out 20 cars. Nobody truely knew who would win the 500 all the way to the last lap. Anything I've ever said about Jamie McMurray I take back. He was a lame-duck driver at Roush and they booted him in favor for David Ragan. He goes back to a team that he started his career with basically and wins the first race out. McMurray ran great all week in practice, shootout and the duel so this really isn't a surprise. His emotional victory lane interview was heart-felt and real. Just like the racing should be and was. Dale Jr, what can you say about that run! 10th to 2nd on that last restart. He showed moves like his father. Restrictor plate or no restrictor plate he drove his ass off with a car that wasn't a 2nd place car. Kevin Harvick had the pass of the race ducking between Bowyer and Biffle and dashing in front of Martin Truex to take the lead. He was just a victim of Carl Edwards not being able to push him on that last restart. David Reutimann comes out of nowhere to finish 5th and Paul Menard finished 13th! What a great race. The only thing I didn't like was Fox blaming Jeff Gordon for that wreck with Kahne. The field was already bunched up and it was a chain reaction. Mike Joy was the only one that pointed that out. Of course Diva Hamlin finished off Gordon on the last lap. Oh well, he'll be strong at California Just a great race. Two messages for NASCAR. Pave Daytona! It is long past due. Once you see the track break up like that you know its time for a pave job. I hope they make it like Talledega as far as the paving job and not like Charlotte when it was paved. Those cars are going to fly around there in July (if its paved. Number 2. LEAVE THE RULES PACKAGE ALONE!!! Even with the removal of the wing and the addition of a traditional spoiler shouldnt' should only make the racing better at Daytona and Talledega. The package worked. The cars could pass and not have to just ride in line all day. Great job NASCAR and the drivers today! I also have to say fantastic job to FOX for sticking with the race and giving great interviews during the red flags. 15. rw posted: 02.14.2010 - 9:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) really huge congrats to Jamie Mac, for pulling off such a feat! Jr litterally made me say holy ****! with his incredible run to the front, even though he didn't win he deserves Driver of the Race. Truex had a chance but fell back, he's going to be dark-horse to watch for this season. Probably the best Daytona 500 since 2002 (In my opinion that is) , since Ward Burton pulled off a tremendous unlikely win after Sterling's mishap. 16. Bronco posted: 02.14.2010 - 9:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The good: Insane finish. Biffle had the lead with Truex on the outside, Truex grabs the lead and Harvick nearly wrecks him trying to get it, which allows McMurray to squeeze under Truex and take 2nd. On the final restart, Edwards goes to the middle and dumps Harvick, McMurray takes the lead and Dale Jr goes 3 wide and splits Bowyer and Biffle and nearly wins the race. Not too shabby for a guy known on this site as "Dale Mears" I think. The bad: Sitting through two red flags to repair the track which took over two hours combined. It's sad how NASCAR hypes up their biggest race of the year and the track isn't even in a driveable condition. They need to repave Daytona yesterday. Heartbreak for Kasey Kahen to get wrecked despite having one of the best cars in the race. Expensive day for FRM as all three of their cars get damaged. Scott Speed actually lives up to his last name near the end, and two time 500 winner Michael gets a top 20 in his final start at the track which defined him. Dinger did a nice job coming from the back and leading but ruined his day when he spun out. As for Dale Jr, I don't know how the rest of his season will be, but what a way to get started. He has more RP top tens at HMS than his teammates do in the same period of time. He will win another 500 before he hangs up the helmet for sure. Once again congrats to Jamie Mac. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. I almost teared up watching his winning interview. This win will definitely secure his future with that team. Definitely one of the best Speedweeks we've ever seen. Fastest pole speed since 2000, good Bud Shootout, Twin 150s, Nationwide, Trucks and Cup. This race set a record for number of different leaders and had one of the highest number of lead changes ever. 17. If not for the potholes, this could have been be the best 500 since the greatest of all time, 1979! Also, the Nationwide and Truck races had awesome finishes too. First, huge congratulations go to Jamie Mac. His career has certainly been a roller coaster, but he's still managed to collect a few wins along the way. Yes, restrictor plate racing can be a crapshoot, but McMurray has pulled off three great performances in those wins, either by staying at the front (last year at Talladega) or by waiting for the right opportunity (here). I know that a Daytona 500 win is not a good indicator of things to come, but I'm just going to enjoy the win now. Great job Jamie. Was anybody else a bit peeved when Fox went to commercial with 20 to go? I mean, they had a couple of 1 hour delays to squeeze in a bunch of ads. That's like taking a break during a two-minute drive in the Super Bowl. I know you overbid for these contracts, but that's a bit ridiculous. Now about the track coming apart. I'm not sure what to make of it. I'd say it's quite hard to make sure that every square inch of a 2.5 mile track is in pristine condition, but when you heavily hype the race, it would be nice to make sure that one can actually race. C'est la vie I suppose. 26. potatosalad48 posted: 02.14.2010 - 10:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) excellent race. wtg junior! 27. The two long delays may mar the race slightly, but I still loved it. And for all those wanting Daytona to be repaved after this, look at what happened to Bristol after they repaved it a couple years back. The first race after it was repaved was horrible. If they do repave it, don't screw it up. Congrats to Jamie McMurray, who's a driver I've liked ever since he filled in for Sterling Marlin back in 2002 and won his second career race. I am still one to believe Bristol has been neutered not by its new racing surface, but neutered more by driver attitude. Watch past Bristol races, they mention the banking in a way that makes it sound identical, or near identical to the setup they have today, minus it being concrete of course, and the drivers are able to race all sorts of different lines around Bristol fairly successfully. Put some nice little carrot for the drivers at the finish line at Bristol, and I can guarantee you Bristol will grow back some of its teeth that it lost. Back on topic, it sucks that Daytona had a pothole problem today, but in some cases, this stuff just shows up when you least expect it. Hopefully, they can fix up the problem, and come July, we don't have to watch the 400 until 2 in the morning. Other than the pothole problem, the racing seemed to be pretty good, and we didn't have to have a huge wreck either that took out half the field like the Nationwide race. 34. Sure he's good..may have to say great now at restrictor plates but McMurray is a hell of a lot better than Michael Waltrip. If you need a caution just call on Michael Waltrip to cause one. McMurray has struggled because he was a lame-duck driver at Roush. His best days were clearly at Ganassi where he barely missed the chase in 2004 and 2005. 3 wins out of 4 on restrictor plates does put him in that dastardly category as Waltrip though but he's still better than Waltrip and he will win more races on non-restrictor plate tracks. 35. He had a strong car from the time they unloaded it and he was towards the front the entire race and he made the most of it when it mattered the most. I was expecting this race to be complete mayhem without any bump-drafting rules but it wasn't. Nobody drove like a maniac and caused "the big one." There were some close calls but the drivers were able to save it without causing a bunch of cars to be torn up. This race was a classic, no doubt about it. 36. Daytona has only been paved twice, first in 1958 when it was built and repaved in 1978, and they don't plan to repave until after the 2012 races! WTF ISC/NASCAR! Fix the track. This was embarrassing. ISC is even blaming the cars for digging up the asphalt, not the bumpy nature of the track nor the 32 year old pavement. Even South Carolina can pave roads more often. 38. Micheal didn't have a season that he had 9 top 5's and 23 top 10's unlike Jamie. The only reason Jamie didn't make it into the chase that year was fact his team had a rules violation and the chase only consisted of 10 drivers at the time. I think most likely after the Coke Zero 400 the paving will happen but knowing the ISC they will wait until 2011 or 2012 to do it when it is really bad. 43. It was so great to see somebody that emotional after a big win and so grateful for the chance they have been given. In a sport that has been slowly taken over by drivers with Tony Stewart Syndrome, its nice to see Jamie get the big trophy and be so emotional afterwards. Hope he has a year like JPM had last year, with Jamie closing the deal on his good races (like he did tonight) as opposed to JPM choking them away (Indy). Good Lord, I think Dale Sr took over the #88 car on that last lap. I'll give credit where credit is due, that was one hell of a lap. Is he still Dale Mears? Absolutely. One lap, as spectacular as it was, doesn't erase 5 years of chronic underachievment. The red flags were frustrating, but it is just one of those deals. It happens. But I have to respectably disagree with a lot of you. DON'T REPAVE THE TRACK!! Just patch it up. With all the bumps it makes the racing at Daytona much more interesting to watch than races at Talladega, which is basically what Daytona would become if they repave it. It was just a fluke deal of an unusually long cold spell in Daytona, a ton of moisture in the ground which exerted a lot of pressure on the track, and these damn COTs whose splitters just dig into the track like a bulldozer. I must say though, I like a lot of the rule changes. By NASCAR not policing the drivers as closely, it may start to resemble an actual sport again. They are FINALLY getting rid of that ugly, pile of junk rear wing and going back to spoilers. (Next step, get rid of that even uglier front splitter). And the earlier start times should be great, assuming the rest of the tracks hold together. And the multiple GWCs are great IMO. Will NASCAR turn the corner? I hope so. But I'm still skeptical. I hope I get proven wrong. 45. Timmy Quivy posted: 02.15.2010 - 10:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @DieselDan - What part of SC are you from? HA, I don't think they've paved the roads my way since the 40s. But back on subject, yes, this race was in my humble opinion one of the top three 500s ever (throw '59, '79, '01, and maybe '07 into the mix) but most importantly it came in what was probably the most competitive and exciting Speedweeks ever. The only NASCAR-sanctioned race that didn't have a last lap pass (I include this one as a last-lapper since Biffle looked to have this thing won coming out of Turn 2 even if Mac took the white flag leading) was the NNS race but those cars were straight out of control and it was just fun to watch those guys wrestle the cars for the last ten. There were three photo finishes during Speedweeks and I don't think any NASCAR-sanctioned race was ever truly dominated by one competitor. Yeah, 52 lead changes = amazing, but the number that was just so impressive: 22 Different Leaders. THAT'S HALF OF THE FIELD that at one point or another used strategy, a good handling car, or an insane run to the front to lead the Great American Race. Disappointment of the race has to go to Hendrick Motorsports. What can I say, they're either hot in this race or not at all. Yeah Jr. finished 2nd, but I don't even think the most hardcore Jr. fan can say they were that impressed with the first 207 laps out of Jr. and team. The best Hendrick car was probably Gordon, but he just got shuffled back at the wrong time and then wrecks to 26th on the last lap. Johnson had a good car early but it was fading by the time it broke and Martin was never a factor. Stewart & Newman were out to lunch. But again, this isn't surprising. '05 - Win, '06 - Win, '07 - Cars were out to lunch, '08 - Cars were out to lunch, '09 - Probably had the best two cars (#5 & #24); rain affected how they finished, '10 - Save #24, pretty much out to lunch. Surprise of the Race: MWR. David Reutimann needed a good finish to start his season if he does want to make the Chase. He finishes 5th. Truex right behind him in 6th. I will be shocked if Truex makes the Chase - taking the team that MW drove for the last three years and making them good again seems an impossible task in just one year - but seeing Truex and Tryson gel is going to be fun. Lastly, Jamie McMurray. I don't think I've ever seen someone so happy to win it. The Waltrips can probably tie him in that regards, Earnhardt was all smiles but he was never a huge celebrator, so I'd rate his win just below McMurray on the excitement scale. But Jamie Mac...I'll admit, he nearly got me crying. And here's the thing about McMurray. Jamie's racing is 100% confidence-dependent. If he gets a few more top-tens or a top-five or two between here and early Summer, we could well be talking about him as a Chase competitor. 46. Hopefully the rest of the season can follow suit. The `Dinger really impressed me in this race. He started at the rear and drove all the way to the lead by lap 45. I thought he might pull off the upset, but it wasn't meant to be. I couldn't believe that Kurt Busch gave up 4th place with three laps left to get four fresh tires. Did he and Addington really think they could pass 15 cars in three laps? Really stupid call, and considering how fast that car was, he might have won if he stayed out. "Congrats to Jamie Mcmurray on winning the Daytona 500 and showing that he is turning into Michael Waltrip... by winning 3 out of 4 of his career wins on plate tracks. " I knew somebody was going to make that comparison, but it just doesn't hold water. First of all, Jamie does have a win on an unrestricted track, unlike Mikey. Secondly, he won those three plate races with average equipment, using his superior drafting skills and ability to hang on to a loose car to get those rides into victory lane. His car was out of control loose during this race, and also in his Pepsi 400 win, but he made it work anyway. Michael Waltrip, on the other hand, won all his races during the peak of DEI's restrictor plate dominance. I honestly think 30 other drivers could have won plate races in that #15 NAPA car from 2001-2004. In three of his wins, nobody could touch him once he got out front, because his CAR was that much better than the rest of the field. 48. That car was a steaming pile of donkey crap all day, and he finished just one spot behind Harvick who had the best car. That is reason #567,154 why Kenseth is better than Harvick. " First of all, Jamie does have a win on an unrestricted track, unlike Mikey. Secondly, he won those three plate races with average equipment" Thank you! Jack Roush, in his 23 years of ownership, only has 3 Talladega wins. Mark has 2 and Jamie has the other. He has only 3 wins at a non rain shortened Daytona race (though Kenseth was a deserving winner last year), and Jamie has one of those. Compare Mikey's plate stats from '01 to '04 to those of the #8 car. 51. But in any case, there's no comparing Jamie Mac to Michael Waltrip. Jamie won 3 RP races with both the old and new car, he won them with two different teams with different powerplants, and he had a different crew chief for each of those wins. Despite having now two wins at Daytona, he's only led 6 laps! Speaking of Michael Waltrip, his two cars finish in the top 10 for the first time. That will happen a lot more this season for sure. Harvick's winless streak now sits at 3 full years while Newman is at 2 years. 52. Rusty posted: 02.15.2010 - 11:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Steve Addington gets dunce CC of the day award. I think we probably have one NASCAR race with dominant car, but it doesn't matter a lot. The 500 was great, even delays didn't seemed boring cause we all missed THAT KIND OF RACING. Happy to see Jamie at VL. Great point about him taking opportunities as Montoya screws it. Well deserved win, another one for great memories. I thought Truex will crash out Harvick in T1-2 but both stayed and I'm personally happy that 29 and 56 (with Tryson-traitor) didn't won. Addington completely stealed another great chance for Kurt to win on superspeedway, the way that McCauley and Raker did. I headed that DIS will be repaved this year, was it my mistake? Of course I'm fan of Daytona as it is (didn't know surface is untouched from 1978!) but yesterday we saw it MUST be repaved. Another great track with an old surface now is Atlanta despite it's only 13 years old. Finally I think we should thank Goodyear, because tyres were factor the way it should be. Hope both Goodyear and NASCAR turned their minds in right direction. P.S. Jr Nation - I understand your reaction but it's tooooo early to cheer. Very competitive all the way through, front pack kept rotating between certain drivers, and it proves the most dominant cars (namely Harvick, Bowyer and Kurt Busch) don't always win. But a point: Daytona is the most legendary race in NASCAR, the whole season in a way weighs on the successes of the 500, and when rain comes friday night and you have a day and a half and even after final practice to repave the track, then do it. They didn't and the fans had to wait nearly 3 hours, in COLD weather (it was about 50-55 degrees throughout the race). That is a DISGRACE. The biggest race of the year botched up twice in a row, rain last year and a pothole this year. Otherwise, thought Junior was gonna pass McMurray, wasn't happy that he didn't, he could've, but nice to see McMurray win after a few down years at Roush, also a big win for Earnhardt Ganassi. 56. Mike, you're clueless. Dale Jr. came in second at a Talladega race LAST YEAR. We all know how bad his season last year was. Jimmie's Duel win was a total fluke by the way he ran yesterday. Kyle got caught on the bottom when Harvick hit Truex, which cost him spots. Here's a quote from Kevin Harvick in an ESPN interview, as I remember,"We had a great shot at winning but the 99 doesn't know what he's doing. Great night for our Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet, but it would've been nice to have someone behind us who knows how to draft." I think there's still bad blood between Carl and Kevin after the 2008 Talladega wreck. Darrell Waltrip said this is the last year that he is going to wait for David Ragan to break out. Paul Menard still doesn't have a top 10 finish since the 2008 fall Talladega race where he finished second because he missed the big wrecks. Best 500 I've watched live(I have watched 1993 and 1996 on tape, those were really good as well). The delays actually may have helped add tension, suspense, and drama. -Jamie McMurray is one of the sport's "good guys." He's always filled with emotion, has a huge smile, and a great attitude. I've always liked him and hope his momentum carries him through to a Chase berth this year. -Kevin Harvick is a hell of a plate driver... but I'm sure we all knew this. I love watching him drive. He made some incredible moves. -Surprised that Scott Speed's pit strategy worked out well for the length of time that it did. That may shake up how other teams handle pitting at the other plate tracks this year. -A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, Juan Pablo Montoya, and David Ragan are all going to win plate races before their careers are over. -Front Row Motorsports had horrible luck today. Kvapil spun, Andretti had a flat, and Richardson got caught up in that late crash. All 3 were driving smart races and clinging to the back of the pack before their incidents and they should've all been able to slide into the Top 20 had they stayed clean. I look for this team to have a surprisingly decent year. -Junior impressed me bigtime with his late-race charge. I can't really say anything against him for his plate racing; definitely one of the best at it. He won't be around to contend for the title at the end of the season though, don't count on it. 60. Also, Jamie has 31 top fives in 259 career starts, Mikey has 39 in 760. This was Jamie's 4th career Cup win, 2nd at Daytona. He's won 3 of the last 6 plate races. Interesting tidbit, he's tied with Mark Martin for most wins at plate races by a Roush driver, both of Mark's coming at Talledega and Jamie at Daytona and 'Dega. After HMS swept the front row in qualifying, Dale Jr. matched his starting spot with a 2nd place finish while Martin finished 12th, Jeff Gordon finished 26th after a last lap wreck and Jimmie Johnson DNF'ed in 35th thanks to mechanical problems; it's his 4th straight finish of 27th or worse in the 500. This was only Biffle's 2nd top five at Daytona, his first being his first career win in the 400 back in 2003. His previous best finish in the 500 was 10th in 2007. Bowyer finished 4th in the 500 for the 2nd straight season and has 6 top tens in 9 Daytona starts. David Reutimann made his 100th career start, getting his first top 10 at Daytona with a 5th place finish. Previous best finish was 12th in the 500 last season. This was Martin Truex Jr.'s 3rd straight top ten dating back to last season, the 3rd time he's done it and first since the last 3 races of 2007. Harvick led the most laps with 41 and scored his 130th career top ten. RCR teammates Bowyer and Harvick combined to lead 78 laps. Kenseth got his 175th career top ten, 4th straight top ten at Daytona and 9th top ten in the last 14 Daytona races after just 1 in his first 7 career Daytona starts. Carl Edwards got his 100th career top ten. 3 Roush cars finished in the top 10; Biffle 3rd, Kenseth 8th and Edwards 9th. Montoya made it two EGR cars in the top ten. It only happened once last season, the 2nd race at Phoenix, but it makes it 2 of the last 3 races dating back to then. Menard gets his best career finish at Daytona; previous best was 15th in the 2008 400 from pole. It's his first top 10 finish in 9 races dating back to last season. Scott Speed led 12 laps, a career high for a race, and finished 19th. Kurt Busch led 33 laps, most he's led in the 500 since leading 95 in 2007. After not leading a lap in all of 2009, Allmendinger led 11 laps in the race but finished 32nd, 10 laps down. 61. It was enjoyable that McMurray beat Roush and Teresa Earnhardt beat Junior though. I believe Kahne is going to have a shootout with Harvick for a third Stewart-Haas car next year. Both of their contracts are up and they both seem to want to go there badly. Harvick is buddies with Stewart, so he may get it, but I think Kahne is more likely because I think Budweiser is more likely to follow him than Shell/Pennzoil is likely to follow Harvick, and Bud is the bigger sponsor presumably. Sure, Kahne is also more talented than Harvick, but I think Stewart's more likely to base his decision on money than talent (why else would he be considering Danica?) I don't think Kahne will land a ride with Hendrick Motorsports proper like everyone is saying, but Stewart-Haas is essentially the same thing. Could not believe what I was seeing! I was shocked at first when I seen on the screen he moved up to fifth. Then he about wrecked twice and gathered it back up on the last lap. The Jr fans around us started going crazy. Today is Wednesday and had he came back and won I know good and well there would still be fans down there celebrating. Heck I may have. It was awesome. He was mute most of the race except for when he led early on. And I agree with whoever said Dale Sr. took over his car at the end of the race. That's what I mean by resume'. He has a better overall resume'. Plus he has raced with RCR who doesn't have as better as resources/equipment than Roush. Eh... I'll give him credit for one Busch title but it's hard for me to give him credit for the second (or Bowyer, Edwards, and Kyle for their more recent Nationwide titles) considering he was already a full-time Cup driver. Kenseth was Rookie of the Year in Cup and was second in Busch Series ROTY to Steve Park driving a partial season for Robbie Reiser, while Harvick was driving for Childress in one of the then-rare full-season Cup operations in Busch. Kenseth could have won a Busch title in equipment that strong, and could have won a full time Busch title after going to Cup if he'd bothered. Should I mention Harvick going winless in a pretty good truck before Childress picked him up in Busch? Kenseth too won the Daytona 500. I'll grant that Harvick is better on road courses and possibly short tracks, and has but I don't think it's enough to put him over Kenseth, especially when Kenseth has been stronger than Harvick lately, despite Kenseth last year having just as bad equipment as Harvick. IROC, the Shootout, and the All-Star race don't really count for much of anything, and I wouldn't give Harvick as a driver credit for his truck team's success...different skills. Lots of strong drivers became weak owners (Petty, Allison, Yarborough), while lots of weak drivers have become strong owners (Childress being the best example.) 111. Now as far as Harvick "winning on every type of track" and "winning all the big races", he has one road course win, one plate win, 2 short track wins (none in the Bristol Night Race, the most prestigious short track race), 4 flat track wins, and 3 intermediate track wins. In nine seasons. So yes, he has won on all types of tracks, but he isn't exactly lighting it up ANYWHERE. Kenseth has three short track wins (twice in the Bristol Night Race), one plate win, 4 wins on one mile tracks, 5 wins on 1.5 mile tracks, and 5 wins on 2 mile tracks. The only thing missing is a road course win which I'll freely admit Matt sucks ass at. Now as far as the "big races", they both have one Daytona 500 win. Harvick has a Brickyard 400 win, but Matt has a World 600 win. They both won the All Star Race once. They both have an IROC title. Kevin won back to back non point paying Bud Shootouts, Kenseth won back to back point paying 500 lap night races at Bristol. And as far as the Busch/Nationwide stuff: First of all it doesn't mean a hill of beans. Jimmie Johnson has ONE Busch Series win. Dale Mears has two Busch championships and a ton of wins. Which one is the better driver? But, just for a moment, let's pretend it does mean something. Matt only ran the full schedule twice, and that was driving for independent John Reiser. From mid 1997 through 2001, he drove independent CHEVROLETS (so they obviously got no support from Roush) in 127 races winning 12 times. Since then he has driven in 116 races for Roush Racing Fords, mostly in part time rides that don't go to every event. he won 13 times in that span. Harvick ran all his full time schedules for RCR, and his part time years were for full time teams that went to every event so they were always sharp. this only stopped when he began racing his won cars, which were also full time teams. He has only won twice in his own stuff. Oh yeah, and one other thing: MATT KENSETH WON A WINSTON CUP CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! Harvick hasn't. So can we put this silly debate to rest? 113. The most he's won at any type of track is 4 races, and that's if you liberally count Loudon, Phoenix, and Indy together as "flat tracks". Yes he's won at every type of track, but it hasn't been much. Kevin is only better at road courses as compared to Matt. Matt has a slight edge on the short tracks (they both suck royal ass at Martinsville, have one win at Richmond, and Matt has the edge at Bristol). The intermediates aren't even close. As far as the big, flat intermediates (Indy, Cali, Michigan, Chicago, Kansas, Pocono, old Vegas) Kenseth leads 7 to 3. For the high banked intermediates (Atlanta, Charlotte, Texas, new Homestead) Matt leads 3 to 1. Kevin leads in the flat one milers (Phoenix, Loudon) 3 to 1, but Matt owns him on the high banked one milers (Rockingham, Dover) 3 to 0. Add it all up and Kevin isn't even in Matt's league. Really, I don't think that RCR is one of the top teams in Cup, and they really haven't been since 1995. Harvick has led an average of 349 laps per season, with his highest total being 895 in 2006 (2006, coincidentally, was also Matt Kenseth's best season). In Dale Earnhardt's last five full Cup seasons, he led an average of 338 laps per season, with his highest total being 614 in 1996. Of course, much has changed in NASCAR and at RCR since 1995. But I do think that RCR has been behind Hendrick, Gibbs, Yates (1996-2002), and yes Roush. I think that RCR's (don't wreck and take an 8th place finish" strategy has hurt Harvick in the wins department. I don't think that Harvick has had too many winning cars, with the exception of 2006*. Basically what I'm saying is, Matt has had a superior car for much of the decade, so one cannot adequately compare based on stats alone. At the same time, I don't think that Harvick's attitude has really aided him over the years. It seems as though he takes the "it's my team's fault" road instead of trying to work to see what HE can do to help the cause, something that his predecessor did in the late '90s. Other factors, such as Childress's knack for mid-season team swaps (I've never really gotten that) and the post-Earnhardt funk that the team was seemingly mired in for the first half of the decade also didn't really help matters. *Yes, I'm fully aware that Kenseth won the title in 2003. But his 2006 season beats his '03 season in almost every statistical category (wins, top fives, laps led, and average finish). Not to mention that he scored 132 more points in 2006 than in 2003. 127. One was Biff's fuel mileage win at Daytona in a race dominated by Chevrolets. Kurt Busch won 4, but two were at Bristol during the stretch in which he owned that track. I think you are overrating Roush. Look at the other team's results that year. Mark sucked, Burton sucked, Biffle lost rookie of the year to Jamie Mac and didn't even qualify for the Vegas race. That was the year of Chevrolets and Dodges. If Matt can win a championship in a year when he had teammates more talented than any set of teammates Harvick ever had (including Burton who has been Harvick's teammate also for a while), then Matt would have also won in a Chevrolet in a year Chevy was dominating. 131. Robby Gordon, who had his best season that year: 16th in points and two wins. He was even in the Top 10 in points for a little while during the summer. I am almost positive that is the only time in his career he has even been close to the Top 10 in points past MARCH. And then there was the revolving door at the #30 car. First was Jeff Green, a great Busch driver who never showed anything in Cup, then the post head injury Steve Park. God Bless Steve, but he was a wreck waiting to happen at any moment. Actually 1994 was setting up to be a classic battle between Ernie Irvan and Dale Earnhardt before Ernie almost got killed at Michigan. They ran off from everyone else and traded the lead back and forth. It was really exciting for a while. The story behind it was awesome too. You had Ernie, whose Cup career was starting to look a lot like Dale's. Like Dale, Ernie entered Cup with the "checkers or wreckers, anything in between sucks" driving style and tore up a LOT of equipment. But Ernie had just started to mature behind the wheel (he was always mature outside the car, even getting up in front of the drivers meeting once in front of all his peers to apologize for the wrecks he had been causing) and it would have been fun to see what he could have accomplished during Yates' prime. But yeah, after Ernie's wreck, it was pretty bad. With Dale having no real challenger, plus him dealing with the devastation of losing Neil Bonnett, his best friend, earlier in the year, his heart just fell out of it. It was really sad to watch. To me, the best example of "nobody wants to win this thing" that nobody ever talks about was 1991. Dale and Ricky Rudd jumped out way ahead of everyone else early in the year thanks to deadly consistency, then once the summer hit, it was like they took turns TRYING to blow it. The points race was almost completely forgotten that year because of much more riveting stories. There was Harry Gant winning 4 races in a row at age 51, Davey Allison breaking out and showing what he was truly capable of, winning 5 races, and Ernie Irvan causing so many wrecks he had to apologize at a drivers meeting. One story tells you all you need to know about the points "battle" that year. At the Charlotte fall race, Dale blew an engine midway through the race, but actually INCREASED his point lead cause Rudd has crashed a few laps earlier. According to the story, Dale pulled into the garage next to Ricky's wrecked car, threw his arms up at Ricky and said "What the hell are we doing?" 137. RR posted: 02.20.2010 - 2:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The thing about Kenseth's 2003 season was that he very rarely had a winning car. He only led 10 or more laps 8 times that year, and on three of those occasions he actually led 10 laps. In the total laps led category that year, Kenseth was 11th. Also, there were six drivers that actually had more top 5s than Kenseth did that year. The funny thing is, Kenseth was actually the winningest driver from the year before, but couldn't be consistent enough to compete for the title. What Kenseth had going for him in 2003 was the fact that he finished 4-8th every single week, while his nearest competitors were pretty inconsistent. No body except for Kenseth put together a complete season. Johnson had a cold streak in the middle of the season, where he didn't finish in the top ten in 10 of 12 races - from the spring Talladega race to the Summer Daytona race. Earnhardt and Newman ran better than Kenseth, but both had too many DNFs to contend. There were some drivers who started off hot, but tanked in the end. Hell, racing-reference favorite Michael Waltrip was fifth in points after the 23rd race of the year. I don't think this adds to the Harvick/Kenseth argument, but I just got to thinking about how weird of a season 2003 was. Actually, the years 2001-2003 were all pretty good years with strange occurances. 138. Smokefan05 posted: 02.20.2010 - 2:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "16th in points and two wins. He had it locked up and tanked the final five or so races. My reference of 1994 was after Ernie went out, nobody seemed to be energized to win the championship, and since Ernie was the only one close to Dale, he could coast. 2002 is just as good of an example. Sterling was falling off, then he got hurt, which gave Stewart the point lead. Tony's average finish of 12.6 is the worst average finish for a champion in the 1990s and 2000s. 148. petty43 posted: 02.21.2010 - 10:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) RR i have all of them back to 86, and prior to 86 they made fact and record books, bout the size of a folded up road map, i have a few of them as well. these things are always on ebay or some place like that. the people at UMI told me that it was nascar's call to shitcan the guide due to funding, i told her to tell nascar to flip the damn bill out of their own pockets, or raise the damn price next year i dont care i will pay it, i am old school. damn bastards lowered the prices on tickets and shit can my favorite magazine. You are right about that. With no real challenger plus him being heartbroken over losing Neil, you could tell his heart wasn't in it like it usually is. From that point forward the championship was a formality. He clinched with two races still left. "I always thought Ricky fell behind because Dale won 4 races to Ricky's 1 and Ricky lost consistency." That is true, but Dale also lost consistency. Of his 7 championships, that was his weakest in my opinion. He is my list in order of most impressive to least impressive: -1987 (Pure domination. The only year Dale drove for the team with the fastest equipment) -1980 (A second year driver withstanding the challenge of Cale Yarborough, a grizzled vet, one of the 5 best driver's ever, one year removed from his 3-peat. This one doesn't get enough credit) -1990 (9 wins, and beating the deadly consistency of Mark Martin, pulling a huge clutch performance at Phoenix to take control right at the end) -1993 (Rusty Wallace at his peak, winning 10 races, but he just couldn't hang with Dale week in and week out. Dale handling Rusty's intense pressure showed nobody could handle the heat better) -1986 (held off DW and Junior Johnson's dynasty to clinch with one race still to go, although there was a lot of turmoil with DW announcing he was leaving. This was the year Dale grabbed the torch as the sport's top driver, and wouldn't give it up until his 1996 Talladega crash*) -1994 (could have been epic, but after Ernie was taken out, the wind went out of his sails) -1991 (Excellent first half of the year, mildly embarrassing second half. Set the stage for his complete disaster in 1992) * Yes, Gordon won the championship in 1995 (in impressive fashion, 7 wins), beginning his dynasty, but Dale was still the best at the time. His team just didn't adapt to the new Monte Carlo like HMS did. He was still the most feared driver until his Talladega wreck and his big time struggle in the 3 years afterwards. It wasn't really until 1997 that everyone finally realized "Gordon is the best right now". 150. Although there is controversy over that 1990 championship, it was a great year-long battle. 1993 was a great championship for Earnhardt as that year Rusty had by far the best performing car all year except at Daytona. And late in the year when Rusty went on his winning rampage for the second time that season, winning five of the last eight races, Dale usually was right on his heels(except Dover where Hut Stricklin stumbled in front of Rusty and Rusty had nowhere to go but plow into him, which took Dale out). Rusty's first winning rampage was winning four of the first eight, but following that were four of his five DNFs of the season, the other being his flip at Daytona, which put him behind. However, Dale had to keep running strong because Rusty had 9 top 5s and a sixth in the last 11 races. I have about half of that season on tape and Rusty vs. Dale was at an intensity not seen since 1989. 152. I definitely agree with you about Dale's rating of 1st and last impressive title runs. I so agree that the 1980 season looks overshadowed a lot of the time. One reason because it was so unexpected that he would contend with Yarborough's dominance and the experience that he had. Another reason it was just his second year. And he wasn't necessarily covered as one of the favorites. It's why it's so impressive. I hope no one ever joins him as being the only driver to win ROY of the year honors and win the championship the following year. However, I think that title runs 2nd through 6th can be put anywhere in order. Which means your order is fine, and you have good analysis with your opinion. In 1994 he won by 444 points and scored more top 10's that year than he did any other year. His consistency was awesome that year. In 1987 he won 11 of the first 22 races. He won 6 of the 8 short track races and finished 2nd in the other two that he didn't win. He very well could have won the first eight races of the year had he had a better pit stop at Daytona at the end and had not had a bad alternator at the end of the Atlanta race. 154. RR posted: 02.21.2010 - 1:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'd categorize Earnhardt's championship winning years in to two distinct eras. The first would involve championships 2-4. In all of those years, Earnhardt led the series in wins and laps led, and his average finish in those years was 8.0 or higher. He was especially dominant on the short and plate tracks. The second era would consist of '91, '93, and '94. In none of those seasons did Earnhardt lead the most laps, nor did he have the most wins. But in each of those seasons, Earnhardt and co. practically made no mistakes, while his closest opponents were usually wildly inconsistent. 1991: Yes, Earnhardt had a pretty rough second half. But he still led the series that year in lead lap finishes, and had more top ten finishes than anyone that year. Allison and Gant looked better at times, but they both got off to mediocre starts that they couldn't recover from. I don't think Earnhardt ran THAT BAD over the final part of the season (his average finish in the last 10 races was 9.1, compare to his 8.6 average the entire year), and he was still the most consistent of every driver under the age of 50. 1993: Earnhardt sacrificed the 1992 season to do what he did this year. Though Wallace had the best car for most of the races that year (he led almost two times that amount of laps that Earnhardt led), it was Rusty's five DNFs that killed his chances. 1994: This year was shaping up to be like 1993, but with Irvan taking the role of Wallace. We've discussed this season already, but I will say that Earnhardt still ran exceptionally well even after Irvan's wreck. His average finish, which includes a 40th place engine DNF, was 6.3. Taking that race out, his average was an astonishing 2.8. Aside from the tragedies, I though 1994 was a pretty interesting year. We saw a true star being born (Gordon). We saw Ricky Rudd finish 5th with a team he built virtually from the ground up. There was Geoff Bodine having a true "feast or famine" year: lapping the field one race, blowing n engine the next three. Terry Labonte proved that he still had it, and Kenny Schrader did every thing but win a race. 155. Eric posted: 02.21.2010 - 5:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Daytona 520 156. I didn't mean mean to come off as saying that any of them were "bad years" by any stretch of the imagination, but reading my posts I can see where it would be interpreted as such. I was trying to compare his seven title seasons amongst each other. 1991 wasn't a bad year relatively speaking at all. It just pales compared to the others. And like you said, in stretches, Davey and Harry both showed way more speed, but couldn't do it all year like Dale. You are also right about the consistency issue in '91, '93, and '94. For better or worse, RCR settled into that routine that they still follow to this day. Build bulletproof cars and outlast everyone else. Of course with Dale's driving style it was out of necessity. He was NEVER going to back down. Really the only year he ever had the fastest equipment was 1987, and he blew everyone else off the face of the Earth. 6 of the first 8 races were wins, he won the first 6 short track events, and finished 2nd in the other two. Most impressively, he won at Michigan AND Pocono which are horsepower tracks. He would only win one race apiece at each of those tracks again. At one point his point lead was over 600. Imagine if his cars were that strong every year. 159. Interesting enough I don't believe he posted much more after Kevin Harvick won the championship in 2014. He talked absolute garbage about Harvick not being good enough or not talented enough to win races regularly or win a championship. After this race he talked trash about Harvick not being on the same level as Matt Kenseth at the time. Of course I defended Harvick because I didn't feel like he was in as good as equipment as Kenseth and here we are ten years later and obviously I was right. I just don't understand why that was so hard for people to see then. Especially for someone like him that had been a fan and followed the sport as much as he had. RCR just didn't have the equipment at the time as Roush, HMS, or JGR had. And even at that Penske was better then. DSFF was anti-Harvick in posts 104, 112, 116, 125, and 130 calling the debate between Harvick and Kenseth a "silly debate" and even saying "Seriously, I can't believe this is an even an argument". Well I definitely agree with him on that one. I defended Harvick about him not having the equipment that Kenseth did in 95, 109, 111, 120, and 153. Here we are ten years later and since then Harvick is ahead of Kenseth in wins (58-39), they both now have a championship, and of course Harvick is going to win his fourth "points championship" this year (2010, 2015, 2016, and 2020) barring something crazy. Of course this race page isn't the only page that DSFF bashed Harvick. Him and Kit bashed Harvick on his driver page and on many race pages in 2011, 2013, and in 2014 before he won the title. In 2013, he criticized Harvick's move to Stewart stating it was too late in the game to be doing that and that it would be a failure. My feelings on it at the time was that Harvick needed a change whether it turned out to be good or bad. He lost many years at RCR with his type of talent. He was unfortunately held back. SMH. So, I guess the more we doubt him the more he makes us pay and become believers. I'd say he doesn't, but I wouldn't bet against it either. If he does, then there's going to be a lot of humble pie being served to a lot people that's for sure. Kevin in his 40's is as good as Dale was when he was in his 40's. There, I said it. Took a lot. 187. Your win total doesn't account for this fact. There is no 'humble pie' being served regardless of the outcome. Also trashing other users behind their backs (and thus when they have no means of defending their positions) is quite cynical. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
