I never thought we would ever get close to the record for lead changes let alone destroy the record. This was probably from flag to flag the best race I have ever seen (even thou I'm sure someone will find somthing to complain about). And Harvick did an awesome job in waiting till the exact right moment to get around McMurray. Just too bad Jr. did not have the finish he deserved today along with Jeff Burton but that is Talladgea. And it looks like there is a little tension over there in the Hendrick stable as I think Gordon finally hates playing second man to Johnson. Overall the greatest flag to flag race I have seen since I started watching NASCAR. 15. Most competitive race in NASCAR history - 88 lead changes and 29 different leaders and the first race to have 3 GWCs resulting in the longest 500 mile race in history. Heartbreak for Michael Waltrip to get wrecked, who was having an awesome run trading the lead with Dale Jr. Johnny Sauter was having a great run in the TBR car as well, and Mike Bliss gets the 3rd straight top 10 for the 09 at Talladega. Travis Kvapil scored the best finish for a FRM car so far in 2010. Bless NASCAR for the 3 attempts at a GWC finish rule and the incredible aero package. Had quals not been rained out, we would have seen a pole speed touching 200mph. The Big Mac's close 2nd place finish also proved that him winning the last two RP races were no fluke, he's one the best drafters in NASCAR and deserves the recognition. 18. Oh wait they did that anyway. :P Jimmie Johnson actually screwed up twice in this race. 1: when he blocked Jeff Gordon 2: He wrecked himself (which was nice too see) I hope Jeff gets into Jimmies stuff at Richmond and makes his life a living hell. Great runs for David Ragen (i can't believe i just said that), Mike Bliss (in James Finchs plate stuff), Scott Speed (played the whole race like a vetern), Travis Kvapil (always a good plate race) and Robby Gordon (for whatever reason can't beat Travis K. if his live depended on it. And didn't make his move until it was too late like always) This race has too be in the top 10 races in NASCAR history. I'm glad i watched flag to flag. I hope no one will complain about this race. Some drivers have figured out the draft lock and some have not. The record for lead changes was supposed to be a record to never be broken, but it was and I'm glad to have watched the race. Keselowski made a dumb mistake by coming on pit road close to the pit wall; which led to Ambrose crunching the right fender on Keselowski's car. The GWC was where the wrecks were, other than that a clean race. Somehow Jeff Gordon was able to finish on the lead lap with heavy damage to the front of his race car. Montoya is having a Geoffrey Bodine like season with a lot of top 5's and a lot of Sub 30's. Harvick's move was very impressive, but was also predictable. People who say Plate Racing doesn't count aren't very smart people, because this race was a perfect example of trying to time every move, and trying to be in the right place at the right time. I consider the two car draft lock like nitrous. You can only do so much of it, so you better use it right. 23. It was great to see a photo finish under green without the last lap wreck and/or controvery that usually mars Dega finishes. Harvick and McMurray are probably the two best plate racers in Cup right now, so it was fitting to see them finish 1-2. Also ironic that GWC's in the Daytona 500 helped Jamie and screwed Kevin, while GWC's in this race helped Kevin and screwed Jamie. Gotta feel for Jeff Burton, who had the best car (led 28 laps) yet ended up stuck in the wet grass with twisted sheet metal. He also could have won Martinsville but cut a tire late in that race. Nice to see Mark finally survive Dega with a decent finish. He had wrecked in five of his last six Dega races before today. JPM finally makes it through a race without being slapped in the face by lady luck. Kurt Busch has his door caved in yet comes back to finish 8th. I enjoyed this race, but as far as "best race ever", I don't even think it's the best race ever at Talladega. In fact, I don't think it's the best race ever at Talladega won by a guy driving an RCR car (I think you see where I'm going with this). Look, I have nothing personal against Joey Logano. For the microscope and expectations he has been put under at such a young age, he has handled it very well. And he is definitely improving. But how much is Home Depot paying NASCAR and the networks to have their announcers keep covering for him? This is getting ridiculous. The Big wreck at the end was clearly his fault. Does this make him a bad driver and a bad guy? No. Tons of people have made that mistake. Newman himself did it in 2005. But for the announcers to go as far as to say it was NEWMAN'S fault? Give me a freaking break! He messed up, it happens, get over it. As far as JJ, you've gotta remember he is horrible at this track. I know he won here once, but most of the rest of his runs (especially in the Spring) have been awful. Kinda fun watching him and Gordon go at it. Maybe they'll get too fixated on each other and let Mark Martin slip through and finally win the Cup. 36. I don't see what the need for throwing a caution for Bobby Labonte's spin was. He spun all by himself, was nowhere near anyone else, and recovered quickly. There was much-needed separation in the field, preventing the possibility of wrecks, and throwing a caution there led to the endless chain of cautions that in my opinion ruined what was almost a perfect race... I would have much rather seen no caution thrown then and just have it decided among those in the seven-car breakaway. I am not the same as the Sean who posted earlier. 47. Eric posted: 04.25.2010 - 9:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It might have been the best plate race this year and it might have best race of 2010 so far. I don't think it's the best Talladega race all time though or the best race in Nascar History. I seen many Talladega races in television matter of fact in including Dale Sr.'s last win in Nascar. This might be the last time James Finch has a car in the top 10 as a car owner. There has been talk during the weekend that James is looking at selling his team. Harvick winning at Talladega shouldn't a shock. He was due winning a points plate race. Harvick is one of the best plate racers out there right. I think Jeff will wreck Jimmie sometime this season, but I don't known when. Jeff is getting frustrated with Jimmie having a lot of success and Jeff not into victory circle as much as used to before Jimmie went to cup. Jimmie isn't exactly one of the greats at drafting and Talladega is Jimmie's worst track like DaleSrFanForever said earlier. "But how much is Home Depot paying NASCAR and the networks to have their announcers keep covering for him?" Well, that's not too much of a surprise, if Home Depot can buy the fan vote and a Cup win, then what's a little extra TV sympathy? A 1-2-3 finish for the ECR engines, and the second straight RP where they led the most and second most laps. Maybe JPM will take the checkers at Daytona. What made this race so great that there was so many story lines at the end. Was that Dale Earnhardt in the 29 car? Especially with that brilliant and nasty bump and run move. I told my buddy on the backstretch Harvick was gonna put a move from hell through the tri-oval on Jamie Mac and did he ever. Might just be the greatest last lap move of all time. That should be two restrictor plate wins for Harvick this year. You had 88 lead changes with 29 different leaders not counting the different lead changes that aren't actually counted unless you lead a lap. Just awesome! Plus with a last lap pass like that? Wow! Nothing tops the 76 and 79 Daytona 500 or Dale's come back win in 2000 at Talladega, but this damn near close. One could make an easy arguement why this is the greatest race of all time. Said Mark Martin, ??I hate to show my age, but that was a tremendous pass just like the old days, like you would have seen Buddy Baker or Cale Yarborough,? Martin said. ??That was a tremendous pass, and it was timed perfectly.? You had a four-time champion irate and "pissed" with another four-time champion who are teammates?!?! You had many crashes at the end and three overtimes with a lot of guys running on fumes? wow, what a race... I think more people will appreciate this race more as time goes on just like the 1979 Daytona 500 and 2000 Winston 500. And yes, Dale Earnhardt won three consecutive restrictor plate races in 1990, and the sad part is he should have had four that year. :( 58. We saw what happens when it's two plate aces racing for the win at Talladega instead of a plate zero like Carl Edwards and a rookie like Keselowski, and even Kyle Busch at Daytona. Harvick made a great move on McMurray to get inside and McMurray didn't panic and BLOCKBLOCKBLOCK to throw away at least a 2nd, he kept his line and tried to side draft to get back his momentum like he did to win Daytona back in 2007. Experience and smarts made for an awesome finish. And somehow, in a race with 29 different leaders, Carl Edwards wasn't one of them. I still think calling the rain thing a Home Depot based call is a bit bogus. The speed you carry into a corner at Martinsville vs. New Hampshire are vastly different. Not to mention, it was less than 10 years ago people were asking to have NHMS taken off the schedule because of the amount of fatalities that had occurred in such a short amount of time there. He was the first driver ever to do so back in 2003. McMurray came painfully close to becoming the first driver to win 3 straight plate races since Dale Earnhardt in 1990. But it's his 2nd top five of the year, already more than he had all of last season. Talladega might end up saving McMac and JPM's Chase hopes; the EGR teammates finished 2nd and 3rd, the first time that they've gotten two teams in the top five. McMurray is 17th and Montoya is back into the top 20 thanks to it. It's JPM's 2nd top five in 7 starts at Talladega. Denny Hamlin's 4th is his first finish better than 17th that isn't a win, and his 50th career top five in his 160th career start. Mark Martin's first top 5 at Talladega since 2001 has him 6th in the standings compared to 18th last year. He only had 1 top five (albeit a win at Phoenix) and 4 top tens in the first 9 races, this year he has 4 top fives. David Ragan's 6th is his 20th career top ten, and 6th top ten (3 at Daytona, 3 at Talladega) in 14th career plate races. I guess he has a career as James Finch's plate ringer ahead of him when he gets canned from RFR. Clint Bowyer's 7th is just his 3rd top ten in 9 Talladega starts. It's his 6th top ten in 9 races this year but his other finishes are 23rd, 40th and 36th which have hurt him in the standings. Kurt Busch got his 13th top ten in 19 Talladega starts, remarkable considering he's still winless at the track. Compare that to his brother Kyle who's 2008 Talladega win was his only top ten in his 10 starts prior to finishing 8th in this race. Mike Bliss gets his first top ten in Cup since Bristol in 2005 while driving full time for Haas Racing. It's Phoenix Racing's 11th top ten in Cup, 8th at plate tracks and all since 2002. Martin Truex Jr. finishes a Talladega race for just the 3rd time in 11 starts but it's the first time doing so that he hasn't finished in the top 10. It's the 9th straight race that Dale Jr.'s led a lap at Talladega. In fact he's failed to lead a lap only twice in 20 starts there. David Reutimann's 14th is his career best at Talladega in 7 starts. Scott Speed's 5 top 20 finishes so far in 2010 are already more than the 4 he had all of last season. Tony Stewart finishes outside the top 10 for the 6th time in the last 8 Talladega races, but one of those rare top tens was his 2008 win. Travis Kvapil's 18th is his best finish since also finishing 18th at Bristol last year in his last race with Yates Racing. AJ Allmendinger finishes in the top 20 for the 5th time in the last 6 races. Robby Gordon finishes in the top 20 at Talladega for the first time since 2008 when he scored the 2nd most points at the plate races for that season. Paul Menard has his 3rd straight finish of 25th or worse after starting the year with 6 straight top 20 finishes. Robert Richardson Jr. made his 3rd career Cup start, all at plate tracks. Jeff Burton leads the most laps in a race for the first time since Bristol back in 2006. 77. I recognize the historical value of the facility, commend Bill France's original vision, and routinely include it with Charlotte, Darlington and Daytona as the sport's most important events. But I find the product today laughable, entirely artificial, like watching slot cars on rails. While everyone was caught up in the drama of the last three restarts, I had been taken over by an extreme sense of apathy shortly after the start. When you realize that a driver can go from 40th to 1st and back again in roughly five minutes, all of those lead changes (88) suddenly appear irrelevant. It might be entertaining, but it's not motor racing to me. However, Talladega is not going anywhere short of a natural disaster, and I accept I am in a distinct minority, so c'est la vie. Disappointments? David Reutimann spent the race's middle portion close to the front, then lost the draft, brought out his own caution, and went no where when it counted. Similarly, I thought Truex was making a move on the final two restarts, but he got behind McMurray and Harvick into fifth and then flamed out. Earnhardt was no better than ordinary, Jeff Burton made an uncharacteristic error (though a result of the preposterous Johnson block on the backstretch) after having been a factor all day, and somehow our friend Kevin Conway ended up five laps down. How can anyone be that far off the pace? Is he afraid to run with other cars around him? Does he have blackmail material on the President of his sex pill sponsor company? When will he get his license taken away, or will the France's refuse to do that since he's going to win Rookie of the Year irrespective of his performance? I think there's a strong argument to be made that one of us could have done that. Put a dictionary on the throttle It's nice that McMurray can count on being competitive at Daytona and Talladega, but the reputation he is cultivating for himself is not all enviable. I would like to see him put together more results at ovals that require braking and finesse, though he will be a great wild card selection at Sonoma in June. It's going to be tragic when a driver's spouse, playing fashion show on Sunday afternoon, is severely burnt because they weren't wearing proper safety garments after a pit fire percolates over the wall. It would be a terrible scene, but maybe then the France's will mandate that everyone in harm's way has to be appropriately outfitted. I know Delana has received criticism for it in the past, but I think her firesuit is a rather intelligent choice. I wouldn't want to be that one unfortunate statistic. 81. It does what is was built to do, keep all the cars bunched together with its wide, high banked, sweeping corners. And once the cars got so fast that handling became just as important as a good engine, they put restrictor plates on the cars. Yes, this inflates lead change statistics, but that was its design. So with that being said with the notion of this being "the most competitive race in NASCAR history" is absurd in my opinion. Did I enjoy this race? Absolutely. But the numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt for the same reason I mentioned earlier. With the draft holding all the cars together (except Kevin Conway) and handling meaning nothing, it allows drivers that couldn't compete on other tracks on the Cup circuit in a million years run with the leaders and even lead some (see Waltrip, Michael). It's just in its own category, the same way each of the road courses is in its own category, the way Martinsville is in its own category, the way Darlington is in its own category, and the way Bristol is in its own category. 85. My first post here was on the failings of Talladega; earlier this February, in reply to a front page post, I once again went on a similar rant. When everyone has the same opinion, this portion of the web site will have become obsolete. I took great care not to sully the positive feeling of this page and even noted Talladega is not going anywhere (which will to be your great relief), as much as I don't care for it. Would you rather me lie for everyone's benefit? Notice that I even offered up substantive commentary on the race, which someone here for effect wouldn't have done. I write with the implicit assumption that everyone is mature enough to handle biting criticism. Evidently you are not. In the future, don't read what I have to say and we can avoid these misunderstandings. But I resent being called a troll, because I believe my conduct on this site has been anything but. I take unpopular positions and spare no one, yet I have always justified myself. As for restraint, Martinsville is another track on the calendar that I despise. Return to the race page from March; you will notice that I made only one comment on Truex's performance, because that was an extremely competitive event and I felt I had nothing to contribute. From a distance it might seem very random, and maybe it is, but it still tests which driver has the ability to conquer the randomness and find a way to beat everybody else within the same game and same rules. It still is not totally random. It cannot be because there is human input, and human cannot do completely random decisions except when being completely wacko. But that is one of the reasons why I like NASCAR, it can offer LOTS OF different styles of tracks and racing, more than any other auto racing sport. It really only lacks street course and dirt track. Diversity is one of the most valuable things NASCAR has, and it shouldn't ever change. I might see dead boring race at Fontana, but at the same time I cannot wait for them to hit Sonoma. "If every driver has a fair chance of winning, then it's not much of a competition... it's just luck." Uh, no. Jamie Mac didn't win the last two RP races and finish second in this one by luck, he made the right moves when it counted and it paid off. If your car is tight, then your washing up the racetrack. Even with the new surface and to boot Daytona is more narrow than Tally. So handling has to play some what of a factor. Like DSFF said Tally is its own beast. But plate races are fun too watch. You don't know who will win until they cross the finish line. Yes it maybe a "crap shoot" but where else can you see a "crap shoot"? And Tally makes it that even too where the "favorities" don't a big advantage at winning. Talladega is a great equalizer. While I had fun watching them swap the lead over and over, deep down I knew it really didn't make a damn because it would come down to the last 5 laps. Again I enjoyed this race, but not any more than I enjoy watching cars battle side by side on short tracks. The best race ever was the 1992 Hooter's 500. And not because it was The King's last race and Gordon's first race. If you are looking for a race full of emotional highs and lows, that is the one. When Davey crashed out and lost the championship, it just left you with a sick feeling. After his nightmare summer: the horrible flip at Pocono, losing his brother, and losing the Winston Million to Darrell Waltrip of all people, it was awful watching him lose it in a fluke wreck. Yeah, but you're comparing cars of different eras though. For one thing, I'd agree with you that Dale Sr. knew what the hell he was doing when it came to drafting... I'll also throw Sterling Marlin in there as an example because he won some plate races and was very competitive in others for several seasons with a team that wasn't always the best. Back then it was more driver than car. Nowadays I think it's probably more car than driver. Hell, look at all the races Michael Waltrip won on plate tracks. You can't tell me that he doesn't know jack shit about racing but is an expert on drafting. Dale Mears hasn't really done shit on a plate track after DEI's dominance ended. But I wouldn't want more than 2 Talladega races per year. It was more fun back when they had 4 short track races per year (2 at North Wilkesboro which they don't do anymore :( ) plus 2 races at Darlington (which compares to nothing) and 2 races at Rockingham (which compares to nothing). That is why I'm glad they race twice a year at Pocono. Is it an exciting race most of the time? Not really. But what is the realistic alternative? Another Vegas date and another Kansas race? I'd rather watch them race on the bizarre triangle. Now if we were living in a fantasy world, ISC would buy Iowa Speedway and take the Chicago and Kansas races and replace them so the midwest fans could actually watch good racing for once. This will never happen a) because of all the money ISC has sunk onto those two boring tracks, b) "Iowa" is not as sexy as "Chicago, IL" (even though the track is actually quite a ways from the heart of Chicago) and "Kansas City" and most importantly c) this stupid new casino at Kansas which guarantees them a second date which is a ridiculous reason. Then, still in Imaginationland here, they would completely reconfigure California into a 1 mile track with a bizarre configuration that somehow still promotes side by side racing like Rockingham did (I would say just go back to The Rock, but that is beyond Imaginationland). With all the land that track covers, just condense it, raise the banking, and enjoy. Then they'd do something different with Texas because three 1.5 mile double dogleg tracks is quite enough. They've already spent all sorts of money reconfiguring that place, what's a few million more? Throw some nuance in there. And finally: Put Bristol back the way it was, don't repave Daytona, and give Darlington Labor Day Weekend back!!!!! 107. You don't have too drill the guy in front of you just to get by him. High bank racetracks shouldn't be one groove, they should be multi-groove. And Daytona is going to be repaved after the July race. And if I did, David Ragan wouldn't be there based on principle. I think you have me mixed up with somebody else. And Red's post pretty much sums up everything I feel about Dale Mears. The stats tell the story. But if I were to make a plate racing list, it would look like this: 1) Dale Earnhardt 2) Jeff Gordon 3) Davey Allison 4) Ernie Irvan 5) Tony Stewart 288) Jimmie Johnson (and that might be generous) I know Gordon has one more plate win than Dale, but he has an equipment advantage and raced in more plate races than Dale. Davey and Ernie are there because of their incredible success in a short period of time. Davey only got to run plate races from 1988 through 1993. In that time he won twice at Talladega (his first Talladega win was unrestricted, the 212 MPH, Bobby Allison almost in the grandstands race) and twice at Daytona, and was always competitive. And Ernie's plate career effectively was from 1990 through 1994. I'm not talking about his races after he came back with his brain still scrambled from his Michigan wreck. I'm talking about the 4 wins (one each in all 4 plate events) in the Kodak car, the 2 photo finish 2nd place finishes to Earnhardt, and the incredible runs he had with the #28 team in 1994, where he probably should have won twice but was beat by Jimmy Spencer and his illegal car. 130. JJ has 2 plate wins and Kurt has none. Another example that should make you in Junior Nation smile: Who is better at Martinsville: Driver 88 or Kurt Busch? Kurt has a grandfather clock, Dale doesn't (unless his Dad gave him one of his six). Yes, winning is important, and it doesn't get nearly enough weight in the points system. But unless you can back those wins up with other solid performances over the years, then it doesn't really help your rankings. Underrated example: Dale Earnhardt at road courses. With just one road course win in all his years of racing, revisionist history says he was never competitive at the road courses. But then you look at his average finishes over all those years, and his Top 5s, he was more competitive than you realize. He has the 5th most Top 5s in Riverside's history, despite the fact they raced there from the early 60's until 1988, and Dale didn't race there until 1979. 135. Imagine if he had left and joined SHR for 2009, he could've had 5 more championship-caliber seasons in top equipment. His career totals could look a lot different. 156. He had a stretch where he was the cat to beat at every plate track, but kind of lost that form late in his career, particularly in 2018. 158. It was special being there hearing his emotional interview afterwards and holding off a hard charging Dale, Jr. 159. He was the runner up in this race at Talladega, Darlington and the Coke 600. He was 3rd in the Bristol night race. He was a crown jewel racer that year. He showed up when the big money was on the line. 160.
