Denny Hamlin performs a miraculous feat... Getting through a race without trying to draw attention to his self-inflicted knee injury. Yet another solid finish by Brad Keselowski and the 12 team. A top ten is right around the corner for him. 7. gordi101 posted: 05.09.2010 - 1:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) his knee injury was when he was playing charity pickup basketball game. so he injured his knee doing something good 8. potatosalad48 posted: 05.09.2010 - 1:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yet another race taken away from Jeff Gordon. 9. And regardless if it was for a good cause, he still did it to himself, and he's still been using it as means of getting attention, such as Fridays pre-race show. 10. How can a track with ONE date in NASCAR's smallest market out sell track with TWO dates in NASCAR's biggest market?(Fontana/LA) 17. Zach posted: 05.09.2010 - 9:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I was at last night's race. And I was at last year's Southern 500. Darlington is one of my favorite tracks. And, God willing, I'll be there next year. It's an exciting place to watch a race. I live 20 miles from a 1.5-miler, and I'd rather drive two hours to Darlington or 2 1/2 hours to Martinsville than go the 1.5-miler in my back yard. I would never advocate giving a race date (first or second) to another 1.5-mile track. But if we really want to make #3 happy with a second date for Kansas, take it from Fontana, which is a bigger negative than any 1.5-miler. 18. Timmy Quivy posted: 05.09.2010 - 10:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Pretty good race, IMHO. Typical Darlington, but I think what made this one "seem" a little more boring was the great tire compound Goodyear brought. It really changed the strategy in a way we've never seen before at Darlington (which I found exciting) and thus it felt more like a typical "race-each-other" race than the "race-the-track" race Darlington provides. 19. Timmy Quivy posted: 05.09.2010 - 10:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, is it just me or is Hendrick Motorsports - for the first time in FOREVER - not the best team on the circuit? Ever since that rear spoiler came out, Jeff has been the only driver who has looked ultra-competitive. Jimmie had a good race at Texas too but that was about the only one he threatened, Mark's team has been very off the last two weeks and Dale Jr.'s team...well, they have Dale Jr. so it's hard to judge how good they might be. 20. Cooper posted: 05.09.2010 - 10:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The best drivers come out at Darlington. It's nice to have good equipment, but at Darlington, the driver means so much more than the car, and that's why I love Darlington. Regan Smith for example;not the best car, but he was wheelin' last night. Dale Earnhardt Jr.(shakes head), he's the only driver except for maybe Kyle Busch, that has a problem every lap; no matter how good or how bad he's running. This is a normal race for the #88: McGrew: "Dale fastest lap on the track" Dale: "Yeah right, car won't turn" McGrew: "You're leading and pulling away from 2nd" Dale: "I gotta vibration" Dale: "This car is terrible, I'm bringing it in" McGrew: "You're running in the top 10" Dale: "I'm going to hit the wall, to make the car turn better" McGrew: Please don't do that man, please" Dale: "Got a tire going down, I'm coming in" McGrew: "Whatever man, remember not to speed" Dale: "OK" --Dale misses pit box-- McGrew: "What happened"? Dale: "You told me to watch my speed and I missed my pit box, thanks a lot" He's a heck of a driver, but he always wants trouble. 21. Eric posted: 05.09.2010 - 11:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Timmy Quivy, It isn't just you with Hendrick outside of Jeff Gorden isn't looked ultra-competitive since the rear spoiler came out. The thing with the 48 is you don't if the 48 team is experimenting right now or not. The 48 is known to experiment during the first 26 races during a season. 22. Timmy Quivy posted: 05.09.2010 - 12:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eric, I've been assuming they've (the #48) been testing stuff but last night might be a sign that they really are struggling. Darlington is a track like nothing else in the Chase - it's the only time in 2010 the series goes there. It wouldn't make a TON of sense to experiment at a track that you're just not going to get a lot of good notes from 23. I'm pretty sure you're talking about the same 1.5 miler that is about 1 hour from my house, and I also have no plans of going there. I go to both Martinsville races, and have been planning to go to this race for a long time, but just never have, though I'd love to (I went to the Labor Day race here in 1998). We need more race tracks like this one. I was initially excited about all the #48's bad luck in this race, but then I realized we need him to have it in the cha$e. He's made quite a few mental goofs recently, but unfortunately they will probably refocus him. I still say nobody comes close to them in the last 10. I hope I'm wrong, but I think this "the 48 can't run with the new spoiler" thing is being blown out of proportion. Martinsville was a full blown R&D race, they could have won Texas and Phoenix if they caught the same breaks with late cautions they caught at Cali and Bristol, JJ did what JJ usually does at Talladega: screw up, and they would have finished Top 5 at Richmond, but they pitted late, realizing they weren't going to win, to try out some adjustments. Gordon keeps inventing ways to lose races. And I don't know why the FOX team was blaming Tony for Jeff's pit blunder. He was in front of Jeff and way down low. Jeff even admitted this. You guys know me, I'd blame Tony for global warming if I could, but he had NOTHING to do with Jeff's goof. And once again they covered Logano's ass for every one of his screw ups. Lord knows how much Home Depot is paying them to do this. As I've said, I like Joey personally, but the way he is covered is ridiculous. I don't remember which driver they blamed for forcing him into the wall that one time, but he never touched him. Bobby Labonte looked like a rookie in this race. 24. 18fan posted: 05.09.2010 - 1:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Great race. Awesome run for Jaime. If only he could do this more often. One week he will finish in the top 10 then he will wreck the next week. That's pretty much been his 2010 season so far. It kills him in the standings. He needs to stop wrecking so much, and he needs to have these kind of runs more often. It drives me crazy how Junior loses 8-10 spots in the last 10-40 laps of a race. He needs to close races! "but what should drivers do in the offseason? nothing but playing madden bacause thats safe?" Not at all, they all just need to be aware that their actions have consequences. And as professional athletes, if they choose to put themselves at risk of an injury that can impede their ability to compete as such they don't really have the right to go whining to the cameras every week about how tough they are because they hurt themselves playing around on their free time. How many drivers play pick up basketball every week and DON'T hurt themselves? Don't get me wrong, Denny is a tremendous talent, however I didn't like his holier than thou attitude before the injury. And now he's using his injury to gain attention. 37. petty43 posted: 05.09.2010 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) and now to introduce the driver's moms, the worst driver ever at darlington, Michael Waltrip. that was a bad omen for this race, o and jamie macmurray still sucks, jeez 3 good races and hes a friggin richard petty, gimme a break, i am not forgetting 6 years of nothing that quick, he wont even make the chase. 38. Without it, he would have a lot more than just 4 wins. On Friday he shattered the previous track record, the 3rd straight year it has been broken, and he led twice as many laps in this race than he did in all of 2009. "fire suit during the 24 Hours of LeMans." Rolex 24 at Daytona you mean. Jimmie now has one more DNF than he did in 2008-2009 combined, and JJ Yeley returns to the Cup series for the first time since August 2008 at Pocono. Again, I know I'm coming off as a "JJ ass kisser" but I'm just calling a spade a spade. The #48 team was in much worse shape at this point in 2008. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards were running everyone off the track. They were just flat out better than the #48. They didn't even get their second victory of the year until Indy in late July. Their other win was a fuel mileage win at Phoenix. So they have overcome worse. Everyone wants to know who can unseat JJ. Is it Denny? Is it Kyle? Is it Mark? You know who I think is the only one besides JJ who can win the Cup this year: Jeff Gordon. If, for those last 10 races, he can dig back in the vault and pull out the vintage late 90's Rainbow Warrior Jeff Gordon, and his team keeps giving him fast cars, then he can do it. Otherwise? 5 in a row. I hate it, I would hate to see either of them win it and I'd hate to see either of the Gibbs duo win it (which, despite their current speed is unlikely). I want to see Mark win it, but they have been mediocre speed wise this year. Unless they can pull off a "Tony Stewart in 2005", I don't see it. I'm really not looking forward to Homestead. 47. DaleSrFanForever posted: 05.10.2010 - 11:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) As far as Jamie Mac, it depends on where his confidence is. If he can stay confident, he can be really good. But it depends. There was the "I'm pretty confident I can do this Jamie Mac" from 2002-2004. There was the "Gee, do I have confidence I can do this or not? Jamie Mac" from 2005-2006. Then there was the "full blown I can't do this Jamie Mac" from 2007-late 2008. Then he progressed to "Actually, in the right circumstance, I CAN do this Jamie Mac" from late 2008-2009. Now he seem to be "Screw it, I know I can do this, I can compete with the big boys while driving for a second tier team, just jump on my back boys Jamie Mac". If he can keep his head right, and realize Ganassi and Roush never really put him in a great situation, he can be good. He needs to realize that in 2009 he had 1/3 of Roush Fenway's ENTIRE win total. In 2007 he had 1/6 of their win total. In 2008, he only had two less wins than the entire Roush stable outside of Carl. And from May 2002 to present, he has 2/3 of Ganassi's total wins in NASCAR. It's like Pearson always said: "If you think somebody out there is better than you, then they already have you beat". For a long time, Jamie was beat before the green flag ever dropped. He is a very sensitive person. Does this make him a great guy? Absolutely. Is this a good way to be if you wanna be successful in NASCAR? Absolutely not. And I'm not saying he should go full blown Kyle Busch. But once he straps in the car, he needs to find a mean place in his heart (if he has one) and use it. We'll have to see where this goes. But like petty43 said, we can't really crown him as anything yet. 48. petty43 posted: 05.10.2010 - 12:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) post 44 grow up moron 49. Last i checked he is to busy losing Old Spice (for whatever reason) and having a rough time to complain about anything. And Jr. has already thrown Lance under the bus through the media. You might as well just throw out Jamie's results with Roush, it's pretty clear that Jamie was always on the low end of the totem pole over there, nearly to the point of being thrown under the bus. I'm almost ready to consider the possibility that David Ragan is a better driver than he's been showing lately, more like 2008 David Ragan, but now Jack's throwing him under the bus now that he has the UPS sponsorship so he can fire him to replace him with someone else. In summary, I really don't like Jack Roush. lol Great job by Denny Hamlin, he's definitely kicking ass now. And Jeff Gordon's mistake with missing pit road ended up saving his race, if he'd been able to go down pit road to make his pit stop he would've been a lap down when the caution came out. Even with the wave around he'd have been at the tail end of the field and screwed out of at least a top ten. Instead he managed to stay on the lead lap and in 11th with fresh tires for the final restart where he ended up 4th. So Jeff wasn't going to win that race no matter what but considering the situation, the best case scenario happened for him. And JPM had a race eventful enough that you'd be surprised if he finished in the top 20 but he finished 5th! He cut his deficit from 12th in half, it was around 100 entering Darlington but now it's 54 points. It was a great race for EGR overall, Jamie's just 39 points out of 12th now. Kyle Busch rebounded from his qualifying wreck to lead some laps and finish 7th in a back up car that had no laps on the track prior to the start of the race. And Harvick finished 6th to increase his point lead to 110 over Jimmie Johnson. And Johnson's lead over 13th is down to 210. Don't stop, believin'.... BTW, how about Martin Truex Jr. in 13th? Truex and Jamie's switch to different teams has paid off big time for both of them, Truex could've had a top five or at least a top ten in this race if his gear hadn't gotten stuck on that restart. 54. Talon64 posted: 05.10.2010 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Denny Hamlin's 11th career Cup win is his 7th win in the last 27 races (after just 4 in his first 135), tied with Jimmie Johnson for the most over that stretch. But Jimmie has 8 in the last 28 races. Denny also won the Nationwide race, giving him his first Cup/NNS sweep. It's strange how he ran so much in Nationwide from 2006-2008, winning his fair share of races but not as much in Cup and not being able to pull it off, but now that his Nationwide schedule's shrunk the last couple of seasons he's finally pulled it off. This was also JGR's 81st Cup win. Jamie McMurray is on to his best start to a season in the standings since 2007 when he was 12th after 11 races with 2 top fives and 5 top tens. But this year he had more top fives (3), a better average finish (17.8 compared to 18.2) and more points scored (1279 compared to 1214). Jamie also won the pole for the race; his 5th career pole, the first time he's won multiple poles in a season and he's the first person to win multiple poles this season. It's his 3rd top five and 4th top ten in 10 starts at Darlington but all in his 6 starts with Chip Ganassi. Kurt Busch's 3rd was his 75th career top five (7th in the series since 2001 when he first started out in Cup) and just his 2nd top five in 14 starts at Darlington. Jeff Gordon ties Jimmie Johnson for the most top fives this year with 5 after his 4th place finish; his 7th straight race at Darlington where he's led laps and finished in the top five, and his 18th career top five in 30 Darlington starts. JPM's 5th is his first top ten at Darlington in 4 starts (previous best was 20th). It's also his 3rd top five and 4th top ten in the last 5 races and he's climbed from 25th to 17th in the standings in that stretch. Last year it took him 28 races to get to 4 top fives. Kevin Harvick's series-leading 8th top ten leaves him one short of his season total all of last season. It's his first top ten in his last 7 Darlington starts. Kyle Busch's 5th straight top ten is the 2nd longest top ten streak of his career; his longest was 7 in 2008 (which included 3 wins). It's his second 7th place finish at Darlington and 3rd top ten in 6 starts. Jeff Burton's 8th is his 4th top ten in his last 5 races at Darlington but his best finish since a 6th back in 2001. Jeff hasn't finished in the top five at Darlington since a 2nd place finish in 2000. Ryan Newman finished in the top 10 for the 8th time in 12 Darlington starts; all 4 of his top tens this season have come in the last 6 races, and he's climbed from 26th to 15th in the standings over that stretch. Brian Vickers' 3rd top ten of the year stops a bad 4 race stretch where he finished 37th, 38th, 29th and 20th and dropped from 12th to 24th in the standings. Now he's up to 20th. David Reutimann's 3rd straight top 20 finish is his best finish since a 5th at Daytona, and 11th is his best career finish at Darlington in 4 starts. Brad Keselowski's 2nd straight top 10 start resulted in a tie for his best finish of the season in 12th, his 6th top 20 finish in the last 7 races after none in his first 7 races driving the #12 Penske Dodge. Over these last 7 races he's scored the 17th most points of anyone. Matt Kenseth was the highest finish Roush driver in the race in 13th, followed by teammates David Ragan and Carl Edwards in 14th and 15th respectively. It ends Kenseth's streak of 4 straight top tens at Darlington, it's Ragan's 5th top 20 in the last 6 races, and Edwards's 15th is amazing considering he was as slow as Kevin Conway during the Friday practices and qualifying and fell off the lead lap a few times during the race. Regan Smith picked up his 3rd top 20 finish of the season. Martin Truex Jr. finished a career-worst 19th at Darlington, but it's his 5th top 20 in 5 Darlington starts. And he ran in the top 10 in the last part of the race. Max Papis' 29th is his 3rd top 30 finish of the season. Paul Menard's 5th straight finish outside the top 20 has officially sunk his season; he's gone from 11th to 23rd in the standings over that stretch. Jimmie Johnson finishes outside the top 30 for the 3rd time this season. But he had 3 of them in the first 10 races last season. 55. Robby just has a way of bringing that out in people. Maybe Jamie should just pretend that every dirver on the track is Robby Gordon. Or just think about how Roush screwed him for four solid years. 56. I call the new Bristol "Little Michigan". And I hate Michigan (the track, not the state). 60. I like both Bristol versions. The old track was definitely more exciting in my opinion, though. It was fun to watch everyone try to gain as many spots as they could with only one lane to work with. And with the multiple grooves it has now, we have battles for position all around, and especially for the win (Shrub vs. Mark last fall in Cup and Allgaier vs. Brad K this year in NW). 61. And in my opinion a TERRIBLE representation of racing in the state of Michigan. When Felix Sabates made his (very true) comments about the state of Michigan and the track I agreed wholeheartedly... And I live there. 62. martin-n-rusty posted: 05.13.2010 - 2:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Again, watch Bristol races from the past before they paved it with concrete. They mention there is progressive banking, there is side by side racing, and there is guys beating the living hell out of eachother for position. Everything is the same at Bristol today except the pavement is concrete, not asphalt, and the beating and banging is not there. Im sure, as I have said a million times, if you give these guys some incentive to get to the front, rather than just run around and play it safe, you will see Bristol roar back to life again. 63. This is true with every driver. McMurray to me seems like he lacks confidence in himself. "I want to see more before I consider him anything other than guy capable of winning at Daytona or Talladega." He won at Charlotte. 64. Casey Mears is subbing in for him in the #83. There's unsubstantiated rumours that it's cancer. I really hope isn't that or something even worse. 65. On the other hand, blood clots, especially in the lungs, are a very serious issue. It is much more "fixable" than cancer, but they need to get to the bottom of it and figure out what caused them and make sure he doesn't get them again. The biggest concern is a piece of one of the clots breaking free into his blood stream and occluding blood flow to his brain. That would be beyond serious. 72. I Seize the Day posted: 05.14.2010 - 11:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I am somewhat bothered how many people are making it seem like missing the chase is the biggest issue. First of all, missing a race doesn't make it impossible by any means to miss the chase. And then ofcourse, we need to more worried that he gets better, not about making the chase. When it comes to good health, everything else is meaningless. 73. Talon64 posted: 05.14.2010 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There's also an owners Chase based on the owners standings that the #83 can still make. It was almost an issue when Mark Martin was running so well in his part-time gig in the #01 Ginn car in 2007 and they had a chance of making it but they fell short. 74.
