Allmendinger had a great run going, even battling Jimmie Johnson for the lead but his retro-1984 Richard Petty painted #43 Ford had to settle for 14th after a vibration and a speeding penalty knocked him from contention. His sponsor Best Buy agreed to the retro paint to commerate Richard Petty's induction into the brand-new NASCAR Hall of Fame. This was the first Cup race after the Hall opened with its first induction coming later in the week. 2. They won 3 of the 5 wing races, but those were due to lucky breaks (Harvick choking, Letarte choking, and being on the outside lane at Bristol). They have run great with the spoiler, but JJ keeps screwing up (Dega, Darlington, this race). I have a pretty good feeling he won't be doing that in the last 10. Martin got the first pole for MWR since Reut got the pole for this race last year, and this was the first pole for the NAPA car since Waltrip started out front for the fall 2007 Talladega race. Martin has brought a level of respectability to the NAPA car and all of MWR that I never thought was possible. AJ's Petty paint scheme was awesome, and it was nice to see him running up front with it. 9. This race would have been even faster if Sam Hornish Jr didn't bring out a couple cautions. Roger need to put Sam back in Open Wheel racing after this season. Sam is good for at least 1 caution a race. Not every cup race is supposed to be exciting. Nascar didn't throw out any fake debris cautions out today and there wasn't a lot of crashes. Nascar listen to the fans today about debris cautions. Nascar fans for the last few years complained about debris cautions without any debris being shown on television. 10. They both broke suspensions in the right rear, causing both to go to the garage ruining both their races. Juan at the time was running 23rd, while Jamie was battling for a top 10. Marcos Ambrose and Sam Hornish made up for 80% of the cautions, 3 of those being blown right front tires. Of the Penske cars only Brad Keselowski didn't have right front issues, as he battled to an 18th place finish. The race though had plenty of challengers that had problems take away very good finishes: #43 A.J Allmendinger: 2 pit penalties and a loose wheel. #48 Jimmie Johnson: Speeding on pit road #2 Kurt Busch: Supposed engine trouble and a cut right front tire #9 Kasey Kahne: Broken shifter, not able to get off pit road. As far as the race, a natural Dover race. Lot of green flag racing and the inability to make quality passes. The race went green to the end for 109 miles, the most since last years Phoenix fall race. 11. 18fan posted: 05.16.2010 - 6:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jimmie didn't live up to Darrell Waltrip calling him the best closer in the sport. Kyle managed to beat him off of pit road and he was much better than Jimmie for those first few green flag laps after pit stops the entire race, but he was able to hold of Jimmie for most of the green flag run before so I think Kyle had a chance of holding Jimmie off. As it stands, it's JGR's 3rd straight win and 5th in the 7 races with the spoiler. HMS is winless over that span, their longest since an 8 race drought covering the last race of 2007 and the first 7 of 2008. RCR had a solid day with Jeff Burton getting his 3rd runner up finish since his last win back at Charlotte in 2008 and Harvick got his series leading 9th top ten. Dover is by far Denny's worst track in Cup but he ties his best career finish there with a 4th. Dover was the one race in the Chase that Denny struggled in last year so this is a really good sign for him. Biffle and Kenseth ran pretty well after struggling a lot in recent races. Joey Logano and Tony Stewart get much-needed top tens to help their causes for the Chase. Especially Tony, he's up to 14th and only 37 points out of 12th. Martin Truex Jr. moved into a Chase position in 12th thanks to a 12th place finish and 2 laps led (it took him until lap 364 to lead them despite starting on pole). 29. I don't want to judge how easy or hard it is to tell between broken steering and tire marbles since I've never been in anything close to a race car but it's still another example of how far off his game Dale Jr. is, at least mentally. Kyle Busch's 18th career Cup victory ties him with 5 other drivers for 37th all time: Geoffrey Bodine, Neil Bonnett, Harry Gant, Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Of the 6 drivers, it took Kyle Busch the least amount of starts by far to get to 18 wins: Geoffrey Bodine: 432 Harry Gant: 404 Matt Kenseth: 330 Dale Earnhardt Jr.: 306 Neil Bonnett: 305 Kyle Busch: 198 Jeff Burton gets his 125th career top five (23rd all time) and first top five at Dover since his 2006 win. Matt Kenseth finishes in the top 10 for the first time in the past 5 races and it's his first top five in the last 7. He needs just one more top five to become the 33rd driver to reach 100 for their career. Denny Hamlin's 4th ties his best finish at Dover, and all 5 of his top 5/10's have come in the last 7 races where he's gone from 19th to 5th in the standings. David Reutimann finishes in the top 5/10 for the first time since Daytona, a span of 10 races without one. Greg Biffle finishes in the top 10 for just the 2nd time in the last 6 races, and 6th is his best finish since a 4th at Bristol 7 races ago. Kevin Harvick's 5th straight top ten is his longest streak since a career-high 9 race streak in 2008. 9 top tens this year is already as many as he had in all of 2009. Carl Edwards get his 8th top ten in 12 Dover starts, 7th in his last 8. Tony Stewart finishes in the top 10 for the first time in the last 7 races, but it's his 3rd straight top ten at Dover. Joey Logano gets his first top 10 in the last 5 races. Jeff Gordon's 11th place finish still leaves him without a stand-alone top 10 for the season. But his 5 top fives are tied with Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson for the most this season. Martin Truex Jr. won his 5th career pole and 4th in the last 48 races after just one in his first 117. AJ Allmendinger finishes in the top 20 for the 7th time in the last 9 races. Mark Martin finishes outside the top 10 for a 3rd straight race, his 2nd such streak of the season. Jimmie Johnson led a race-high 225 laps but finishes outside the top 10 for the 3rd time in the last 4 races. Brad Keselowski finishes in the top 20 for the 7th time in the last 8 races. David Stremme only had 10 top 20 finishes all of last season in the #12. Casey Mears finished 22nd in his substitution for Brian Vickers who missed the race due to blood clots. With Vickers' timetable to return uncertain Mears should be in the car for a few more races. Mears has attempted to qualify for 9 races this year, missing 6. But the 3 races he's made have been with 3 different teams. After missing Phoenix and Texas back-to-back, the #26 Bill Jenkins team has made 4 straight races. They've also finished 7 of their 10 races this year, so give them a hand for actually trying in the races instead of S&P'ing like you'd expect a new team to do in this age of NASCAR. Kevin Conway was the 2nd last driver still running by the end of the race. Despite only 1 DNF in 11 start his average finish is 31.8 and he's finished in the top 30 only twice. Here's your ROTY folks. LOL There were at least 6 S&P's in the race, 7 if Bobby Labonte and the #71 TRG Motorsports team did for the first time this season. I really hope not. 31. JPM is starting to have a Geoff Bodine `94 type season, except without the wins. Five times he has qualified 30th or worse and yet has finishes 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th, and 11th in those races. Sam Hornish is really starting to piss me off. Sam didn't have anything left to prove in the IRL when he left, he's still the only 3 time champion in series history, he was the all-time leader in wins when he left and he got his Indy 500 win in 2006. In hindsight it was a bad move but it looked good back then, with Penske 100% behind getting him up to speed in NASCAR how could he fail? He still has the remaining 24 races of this season to redeem himself. He won the Showdown last year so winning it again this year would be a god send. 46. For most of the period Hornish was in the league, the series was 100% oval; then starting in 2005 they added a TON of road and street courses to the point where the series is now 50/50 oval/twistie. While Hornish was stellar on ovals there, he was terrible on road courses. Honestly, I think that more than the money is why he left in the first place. He was probably already on his way out in IndyCar because his replacement Ryan Briscoe was far superior on road/street courses to him (while not really being any worse on ovals), as is Will Power. Had he remained there, by now he'd be something of a nonentity as he would have been fired and fallen to a substantially weaker team a la Dan Wheldon (who was fired by Ganassi because he was an oval specialist and Dario Franchitti could drive road courses better). Given some of the top talents currently without IndyCar rides, Hornish would probably actually be close to rideless, as I think Penske would have fired him by now in IndyCar for not being able to run the whole schedule. Sure, he'd do better there still than he is doing in NASCAR, but Penske has WAAAAAY higher standards on the IndyCar side. 47.
