I don't like Kurt, but it is nice seeing the Penske organization sweep the All-Star and the Coke 600. Good to see Reut get a top-5 in one of the biggest races of the season. And surprisingly, Paul Menard manages to rack up another top-10. 6. It was nice to see Jeff show a little fire, that tells me that he still wants to be competitive. Kyle drove in a little over his head, so I don't blame Burton at all for confronting him after the race. "and also i listened to a lot of dale jr's audio on trackpass, and i dont think he and mcgrew get along at all." Not surprising. Mark Martin's 4th place finish is a borderline felony. I watched maybe half of the race and never saw him higher than 9th and between 12-17th all race long. The call to stay out really benefited him and might have been the greatest pit call of the race. 9. Ambrose regressed this year and it seems like at time that he is in 1 or 2 weeks a race. Kyle Busch cost his team the race down on pit road. The 48 team may need to concern about their performance if they don't improve by end of June. That team has problems going a full race without any types of problems. 10. It's like, run for 3 1/2 hours, keep 25+ cars on the lead lap, then let a pit stop and 20 lap sprint decide the race. I thought to myself "Why even bother running the first 550 miles?" That's how almost every race has been this season, and it's getting tiresome. Drivers need to be rewarded for running well early, or else the first 80% of the race is pointless, and fan interest wanes. This coming from someone who has always watched every lap of every race. Anyway, I must say I'm really happy to see Jamie Mac having success this year. He seems like a genuinely good guy who just needed to catch a break, and I'm glad things are finally going his way. Hope he makes the Chase. Kyle Busch's recovery from pit road damage was very impressive. After he fell back into the 20's with a busted fender, I thought he was done. No one seems to notice, but I think Tony Gibson might be the best pit strategist in Cup. Ever since he and Ryan joined the #39 team, they have been stealing good finishes left and right. In this race, Ryan was 21st at the final caution, then stayed out and came home 9th. They do this almost every week, most notably in their Phoenix win. At some point I think the gambles will stop working and Ryan will miss the Chase, though. New team, same pathetic performance for Casey Mears. Brian Vickers contended for the win in the last three Coke 600's, then Mears comes in and gets lapped four times in the same car. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP HIRING THIS GUY?!" thats the 2007 World 600 champion you are talking about. Since Hendrick replaced him with "the great" Mark Martin, how many crown jewel wins does Martin have? When was the last time even Jeff Gordon won a crown jewel in a Hendrick car? Casey is a ELITE talent that gets it done in the crown jewel events. Remember his pole at the Brickyard? He had a top 15 points season in Ganassi equipment. You don't do that by being pathetic. 20. CFont posted: 05.31.2010 - 2:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gilligan, Mark won the Southern 500 last yr., a crown jewel event in NASCAR, in the same car Mears drove, and if you want to count poles he sat on the Brickyard pole in 2009, finishing 2nd, and won the Daytona 500 pole this yr. Thats more than Casey can say. Mark also finished 2nd in points with a team Mears couldn't make the Chase with. I don't have a problem with fuel mileage wins or rain shortened wins, but it's not like Casey was a factor in the 2007 600 until fuel mileage came into play. Mears is talented, or he wouldn't be in NASCAR... but an elite driver, what else has he done? How many wins does Mears have since he left Hendrick? Before Hendrick? None. Mark Martin's still sniffing and chasing wins, and I'm still waiting for Casey Mears to show he can win races on talent and ability. 21. Sean posted: 05.31.2010 - 2:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Since Hendrick replaced him with "the great" Mark Martin, how many crown jewel wins does Martin have?" Um, does the 2009 Mother's Day Southern 500 count? I can see you saying no, but I think a win at Darlington is more impressive than a win at Charlotte any day (a fuel mileage win, no less). He also won at Richmond, Phoenix, and Loudon, which all in my opinion have more to do with driving ability than car strength (at least when compared to the cookie cutters and plate tracks). "When was the last time even Jeff Gordon won a crown jewel in a Hendrick car?" Well, he swept the Talladega races in 2007, the same year Mears won his ONE race, and Talladega was one of the four traditional crown jewels. He also won the Mother's Day Southern 500 that year. Casey Mears and elite talent do not belong in the same sentence. I more or less like Mears, but he's not going to show anything truly elite... Your best argument is him finishing top-15 in the Ganassi equipment, but he didn't win, and some lame drivers like Michael Waltrip, Jimmy Spencer, and Brett Bodine have gotten top 15 points finishes, so...hard to argue Mears has significant talent. 22. Bronco posted: 05.31.2010 - 4:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) How I wish Jamie Mac had won. He now has top two finishes in all the "crown jewel" events this year, and has already equaled the number of top 5s that he had in any given season with the #26 team. Last year at this time he was completely invisible and I thought his career was over once he got cut loose from the #26. But he landed on his feet with a team that's dedicated to giving him good race cars as opposed to R&D junk, and it has totally elevated his career. If he could get some consistency going, he'd be in the cha$e where he belongs and would be back to the level he was at in 2004. It's not unrealistic at all to imagine him getting another non-plate win this year, proving that he isn't just a one trick pony. Jimmie Johnson proves that he is human by crashing without any help, making it his third screw up of the year. 5 races without a top 5 must be an eternity to him. 23. Second at Darlington, second here, he's definitely going to challenge for a chase spot. David Reutimann had a great run, but the FOX team made it sound like he dominated the race last year in saying he's the defending champion of this race and he should be running well. Not to take anything away from his good run, though. He had the second highest driver rating(behind Kurt), and David and Kurt both spent 399 of the 400 laps in the top 15, most of anybody. The #00 and #2 were the best for the whole night, but McMurray seemed to be better for the last 100 laps. 25. 18fan posted: 05.31.2010 - 4:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Johnson-Hamlin tangle was a weird moment, but not as weird as what it set up. As is sometimes the problem with taking two tires as the leader with a lot of cars on the lead lap, Kyle Busch pulls out as AJ Allmendinger pulls in. They avoid contact, but right after that Kyle doorslams Keselowski, then speeds to win the race of pit road. I was laughing while all of this craziness unfolded. After that incident, I predicted Kurt would win, but I thought he would just cruise to the win. First 600 since 1991 that the winner led 200+ laps and first time since 2002 that any driver led 200+ laps. Dodge has won the last three 600s in even numbered years (2006, 2008, 2010). Texas (hitting Gordon's side with his left front, flattening his tire), Talladega (cutting across Biff's hood), Darlington (lost it, minor damage, put him in the back where the crashing happens, got crashed), Dover (sped on pit road at the end), The Winston (lost it with a dominating car), this race (lost it, damaged car, eventually lost it for good). I'm telling ya, this is the Jimmie Johnson Mental Blunder Tour. It's like he's making up for all the mistakes he never made over the past 4 years. And how about Dick Bergeren's interview? DaleSrFanForever posted: 05.31.2010 - 9:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Heartbreak for Jamie Mac. When that last caution came out I knew it was curtains for him. Kurt and that #2 team were simply awesome on restarts and the first 30 laps of a run. At least it was a real caution, not a fake WWF debris caution. I still say it was a mistake for JGR letting Addington go. I know Kyle has 2 wins with Dave Rogers, but the Gibbs car are simply outstanding. The Penske cars are finicky, and Steve has the #2 team in a great place. But that #1 team is rolling. They just need to get consistency. And Jamie has definitely cleared the confidence hurdle as evidenced by his radio traffic. His attitude is great now. And yes, all Michael Drunktrip comparisons are bogus. You guys know me, I can't stand Kyle Busch. So if I thought he did something wrong, I would be ripping him to shreds. But I don't think he did anything wrong in the Burton situation. First of all, I don't think he actually touched him. The overhead shot was inconclusive. And secondly, Kenseth spun his tires, Kyle thought about shooting the gap, while he was up high Clint dove under him, got loose in Turn 1, and Kyle went high cause he was forced. Sorry, but that is just a racing deal. It was late in the race, it was no time to be creeping around. I know some people have said it's nice to see that fire from Burton, but the problem is he showed it OUTSIDE of the race car. He needs to show it on the track. He is way too conservative, as is all of RCR. If they think their consistent approach will win them a championship, they are wrong. Even if they do finish Top 10 in every cha$e race, somebody, either JJ or Denny or Kyle or Kurt or Gordon, will win 3 or 4 races, get at least 7 Top FIVES, lead in almost every race, and leave them way behind. Like in 2008. Richard Childress needs to sit all three of his drivers in a room and show them the first 3 laps of the 1993 Hooter's 500 at Atlanta, that season's last race. He needs to explain to them that all his driver, Dale Earnhardt, had to do was finish ahead of something like 8 cars to clinch the Winston Cup championship. In other words, just ride around, let other's crash out, and collect the Cup. Then show them Dale, on just the second lap, making it 3 wide in a wild pass into Turn 1 as Ned Jarrett in the broadcast booth says "The man can't stand it, he has got to race". Then take them through his shop and show them the 6 Winston Cup championship banners he won with Dale, remind them he won one other Winston Cup in just his second year with a 20 year old crew chief, and ask them how they want to drive. 30. Kurt right now is a Top 3 driver in NASCAR. He's driving really well, he's classy, and he's carrying Penske Racing on his back. Here is Penske Racing's stats this year.: Penske: 2 Wins, 5 Top 5's, 7 Top 10's, 755 Laps Led Kurt: 2 Wins, 5 Top 5's, 7 Top 10's, 723 Laps Led Brad and Sam should be ashamed right now. I've given Brad a lot of leeway, and I don't expect him to be Top 10 in the next three weeks, but by Daytona Brad should be at least semi competitive. Brad wrecked his primary car in qualifying in which he over corrected, he slammed into Kyle Busch on pit lane, ruining his car, and he has been a total non factor. I know he can pick it up. Now if he the 88 and 5 crew switch then i'd say Mark should retire cuz Lance isn't going to work for him. That is about all i have to say about Mark. Now Tony has lost a step. I feel he'll retire in the near future but his carrer in NASCAR is set in stone. He'll be remembered for on and off track stuff. I agree that Ryan is a whiner. But he isn't as old as Tony. He can win a race here and there. Now i agree with Jr. I think he just doesn't care anymore. If Rick H. cared as much as he says he does, put Pops Sr. on the war wagon and see what happens. I honestly could careless what those 2 want. If i was Rick put those 2 together and wait. If it fails then Jr. should go, if it works then keep him. Switching the crews isn't going to work. The splitter to tire contact that cut Burton's tire down was when Kyle forced himself 3 wide in the middle when there wasn't even a hole big enough for his car. How is it NOT Kyle's fault? The Daytona/Indy sweep for Jamie would've been awesome but his pit crew let him down on that last pit stop; Jamie looked better than he had all race on the short runs and if he'd been ahead of Kurt he would've had a good chance of holding him off. Chip could've also had a weekend sweep if Jamie'd won the 600, the Rolex Grand-Am Series is racing today at Lime Rock. But Memo Rojas got pushed off the track by Jon Fogarty on the first lap which took the #01 out of the race. >:-( Kyle might still be immature off the track but he's improving where it matters, on the track. Just a couple years ago that pit lane incident would've destroyed his race and he would've probably wrecked himself in anger, but instead he kept his head on straight and the team got the car repaired enough so that Kyle could get back up to 3rd. It was good to see Reutimann run so well after he won last year's race under less impressive circumstances. Paul Menard had gone completely cold over the last couple months so his top 10 run was a bit of a surprise. Harvick's 11th was his best finish in the last 7 years at Charlotte which he admits is his worst track. He was up into the top 5 at one point and without the late pit strategy by some of the top 10 finishers he would've been in there instead. Despite Kurt's dominance 17 different drivers led a lap thanks to all the green flag pit stops. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was leading the race with just 35 laps to go... until he had to pit. ROFFLE Jimmie Johnson's 37th place finish knocks him down to 7th in the standings, 151 points ahead of 13th. Don't stop, believin'.... Brian Vickers's missed the last 2 races but he's still 27th in the standings ahead of 7 drivers who've run every race and 11 drivers with equal or more starts. So shame on Elliott Sadler, Sam Hornish Jr., Marcos Ambrose, Regan Smith, Travis Kvapil, Bobby Labonte and Robby Gordon. Ryan Newman moved up into 12th, knocking out Martin Truex Jr. who had a terrible run after he ran so well during All Star weekend and qualified in the top five for the 600. 40. He might be the first owner to win the Indy 500 and World/Coke 600. Jamie McMurray finished 2nd for the 3rd time in the last 5 races. If he leads another 30 laps during the season then he'll have led more laps this season than in any of his 4 seasons with Roush. Kyle Busch's 3rd place finish ties his best finish at Charlotte and the 600. His 7th straight top ten ties his career high set in 2008. It was also his 60th career top five. Mark Martin finishes in the top five at Charlotte for the first time since also finishing 4th in the 2006 Coke 600. David Reutimann has back-to-back top fives for the first time in his career, and it's the first time since August/September of 2008 that he's had back-to-back top tens. Jeff Gordon's 6th is his first stand-alone top 10 of 2010 after 5 top fives and 7 finishes of 11th or worse. Clint Bowyer's 7th top ten his his 3rd finish of 7th this year for the former driver of the #07 car. Just typing that makes me feel lucky. LOL Paul Menard finishes in the top 10 for just the 4th time in 124 career starts, and it's the first time he's ever had multiple top tens in a season. Ryan Newman won his 46th career pole, tying him with Junior Johnson for 10th all time. It was his 9th career Charlotte pole, 2nd only to David Pearson, and his 6th career World/Coke 600 pole tied him with Pearson for the most. Newman's 9th place finish is his 5th top ten in the 9 races he's won pole, and he's led at least 10 laps in 8 of them. After going 5 races without a top ten, Kenseth's finished top 10 in his last two races. Harvick just missed his 10th top ten of the year but he has eleven top 11 finishes in 13 races this season. Kasey Kahne finishes outside the top 10 at Charlotte for the first time in the last 6 races. Sam Hornish Jr. finishes in the top 20 for just the 5th time in 13 races in 2010... And Regan Smith gets his 4th top 20. But with a far more underfunded team for the 2008 ROTY. Brad Keselowski made his 30th Cup start. He finished in the top 20 for the 8th time in the last 9 races. David Stremme only had 11 in 33 races last season in the #12. Jimmie Johnson narrowly avoided his 4th DNF of 2010 when the team got the car back out onto the track; he only had 2 DNF's in 2008 and 2009 combined. But it's the 5th time in 13 races he's finished off the lead lap after only doing so 6 times in all of 2009 and 7 in all of 2008. Johnson's 8 lead lap finishes are tied with teammate Mark Martin for the least of anyone currently in the top 12 and he's ranked in a tie for 16th overall. 41. the_man posted: 05.31.2010 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David Ragan on finishing 24th: "We were competitive enough to run in the top 10, but we had an issue the last 30 laps and werenâ??t able to go full speed.â? 42. Congratulations to Kurt Busch on dominating this race. He's been pretty good on the 1.5 milers the last couple of years, but this is his first top ten in the Coke 600. Pretty amazing that it came in such a fashion. Also have to congratulate McMurray on running so well late in the race. If Jamie had come out first from pit stops after the final caution (or if the final caution hadn't happened), we might have seen him take the checkered flag first instead of Kurt.
