Best finish of the season for Carl Edwards and only second top 5 of the year. 600th career start for Jeff Gordon. Best finish and first top 5 since the Daytona 500 for Clint Bowyer. First time Jamie McMurray has finished in the top 10 at Chicago since 2003. McMurray has now led more laps this year than he did in the previous two years combined. This race was only the second time this year that Kevin Harvick has finished outside the top 20. Harvick had some kind of fuel pump issue on his car during the race. 5. calegale33 posted: 07.10.2010 - 11:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It seemed like as the track changed and cooled down as the race progressed that different cars were able to make a charge to the front and lead laps. At the start it was Johnson, then McMurray, Gordon, and finally Reutimann when it mattered the most. I was impressed with McMurray, I don't think he ever dropped out of the top 5 at all during this race. 6. Jamie isn't a consistent driver and it really don't have any thing to do with starting in the top 5. Jamie is capable of being on a hot streak or a cold streak at any time despite where qualifies. Jamie also is capable of having a great finish one week and bad finish the next week despite where he finishes. Jamie got a poll at Auto Club Speedway earlier this year and he wasn't a factor in most of the race. 10. racer x posted: 07.11.2010 - 12:30 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Casey Mears starts and parks 11. He, McMurray and (to a lesser extent) Jeff Gordon seemed to be the only guys who ran up front the whole night. As the track changed many came and went from the top 10. Overall I thought this was a pretty good race and I was really happy to see the #00 in victory lane. I was glad that NASCAR didn't go silly with cautions, although I still believe that the first three really weren't deserving of a caution. At least they're getting better. 14. It is especially surprising to see him win before the #56 team, given that he was 30th in points after Texas, but he has slowly come back into the chase picture. Sucked to see Carl come up short of winning, but he led laps for the first time since Richmond and gained some points on 12th. Jamie Mac earned his third pole of the year, equalizing the amount he had previously in his career. In all three races this year, he was unable to lead lap 1. Dale Jr falls out of the top 12 just a week after getting back in and finishes off the lead lap for the first time since Dover. Mark's finish shows just how far off the pace his team has fallen in just a year. The only way he could get in is by being a championship owner or have a lot of wins as as owner. That is a long way away. Micheal Waltrip had a little bit of talent as a driver because he won the 1983 Nascar Darlington Dash series Champion when he was 20 years old. Micheal also won 11 Busch Series wins. The catch is Micheal had a glass ceiling as driver in talent and that talent is a of a driver that had the capability to win championships on lower National stock car touring levels. 23. That's pretty good in this day and age of NASCAR. David Reutimann's win puts him in the hunt for the Chase again and Carl's 2nd gives him some valuable breathing room, but Bowyer's 4th meant they didn't gain as much as they could've. Kasey Kahne and Jamie McMurray are on pace to have 10 top fives this year but still miss the Chase. Inconsistency for McMurray, while it's taken Kahne too long to get competitive this year. 30. Talon64 posted: 07.12.2010 - 5:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was David Reutimann and Michael Waltrip Racing's 2nd career Cup win. Reutimann only has 9 career top fives and 286 laps led in 118 career starts. Carl Edwards gets just his 2nd top five of the year, and it's only the 2nd race he's led laps in (both through green flag pitstops). It's his 2nd top ten in 6 starts at Chicagoland (3rd in 2007). Jeff Gordon made his 600th career start. He finished in the top 5 for a 5th straight race, his longest streak since 7 in a row in 2007. Jeff Gordon becomes the first driver in 2010 to reach 10 top fives. It's the 15th time in 18 seasons that he's hit 10+ top fives, including the last 5 seasons. Clint Bowyer gets his 2nd top five of the year, first since the Daytona 500. It's the 5th straight season he's had at least 10 top tens. It's his 4th top ten in 5 Chicagoland starts. Jamie McMurray won his 6th career pole, and series leading 3rd of 2010. He got his 5th top five of the year, the most he's had in a season since 2004 when he had 9. It's also his first top five at Chicagoland in 8 starts. Kasey Kahne gets his 4th top ten in the last 5 races and just his 2nd top ten in 7 starts at Chicagoland. Jeff Burton gets his 7th top ten in the last 10 races, and his 4th in 10 starts at Chicagoland. Denny Hamlin gets his first stand-alone top 10 of the season, and first top ten in the last 4 races. It's his 2nd top ten in 5 starts at Chicagoland. Tony Stewart gets his 6th top ten in the last 8 races. It's his 4th straight top ten at Chicagoland, 8th in 10 career starts there. Paul Menard gets his 5th top ten in 130 career starts, 3rd of the season. Martin Truex Jr. gets his best finish in the last 9 races. But he hasn't had a top ten since Richmond in early May. David Ragan gets his best finish in the last 10 races, and his last top ten (only one in 2010) was Talledega in April. After starting the season with 5 straight top tens, Matt Kenseth only has 3 in the last 13 races. He's gone from 2nd in points, 1 point from the lead, to 8th in the standings and 299 points back. AJ Allmendinger gets his 13th top 20 finish of the season. It's his worst career finish in 3 starts at Chicagoland, but he finished 13th in the other two. Mark Martin finishes outside the top 10 for the 6th straight race. I can't see how Mark is going to stay with HMS next year if the team keeps performing like this. Brad Keselowski gets his first top 20 in the last 6 races. It's also the first time this year he's finished higher in the Cup race than he has in the Nationwide race. Regan Smith gets his 6th top 20 finish of the season. Jimmie Johnson led the most laps in this race but ended up with his 6th finish of 25th or worse this season. Kurt Busch suffered his 6th finish of 23rd or worse in 2010. 34th is Kevin Harvick's worst finish since Bristol in August 2009, 32 races ago. Landon Cassill made his 2nd career Cup start. 31. We have to remember what he did in 2007. I think he saved MWR with that season. I know the results looked bad on paper, with quite a few DNQs, but compared with the rest of his organization, he did pretty damn good. He ran well and qualified for more shows than champion Dale Jarrett who had six free passes with his past champion provisionals. And of course Mikey did his usual Mikey thing when not in untouchable equipment at plate tracks: took a bad situation and made it worse. Reut showed the only signs of life for them. This led to Robert Kauffman bailing them out of their massive debt (apparently Mikey is as bad at crunching numbers as he is at driving) and providing the actualy "ownership" of the company. Then, in 2008, Reut got screwed by Mikey and DJ when he had to qualify for the first 5 races while DJ had his "retirement tour" where he sucked royally in every race. While Reut got the #00 in the Top 35 in points, DJ fell out. Then, at the 6th race in Martinsville, they put David in the #44 UPS car and the legendary Michael McDowWALL in the #00 so Reut once again had to get a car in the Top 35 while McDowWALL was in before quickly falling out (while having one of the most spectacular crashes ever IN QUALIFYING WHILE RUNNING ALL ALONE!!!). Eventually the #00 car was SHUT DOWN!! Reut never missed a race that year and finished in the Top 25 in points. Then at the end of 2008, the brain trust (I use that term loosely) at UPS decided to leave Reut for a "younger driver with a rock star persona" and went with David Ragan. Well, Ragan is younger, but if by "rock star personality" they mean "somebody who can make you go to sleep just by talking" then they hit a home run. Since the Ragan has done absolutely nothing. I mean NOTHING!!! Reut took the #44 car (re-remaned #00 in honor of his dad, dirt track legend Buzzie), has won twice, run up front a lot for a mid level team, and made people who aren't "fans" of his like him due to his unassuming attitude, willingness to actually admit when he messes up, and simple every-man attitude. He scared the cha$e last year, and is scaring it again. Meanwhile Ragan has become a running joke. He didn't even make the Top 25 last year, and is only 25th now. As if that isn't enough, Roush, when contracting to 4 teams, kept Ragan and announced he was letting Jamie McMurray go, who won Roush's last Cup race to date, won the Daytona 500 with his new team, and is somewhat in the cha$e hunt. If UPS isn't PISSED, they aren't human. So yeah, David has deserved to be called a winner for a long time, and now he has a "real" win and 2 total. More to come most likely. This victory was one for everyone who has been shit on time after time, and just smiled publically and waited for the next opportunity to prove themselves. I don't know what Robert Kauffman is going to pay him in his next contract, but it won't be enough. Without David, Kauffman would have no organization (under the guise of "Michael Waltrip Racing"). Congrats Reut, go make the cha$e and win some more races. 35. I'm not sure what you have against Dale Jarrett in particular. Yes, DJ was way past his prime, but if it wasn't for him, UPS wouldn't have been there to begin with. I'm not sure how he was "screwed" by Mikey and DJ at the beginning of 2008, seeing as how all 3 MWR were out of the Top 35 at the time. If anything, Reutimann got a good deal, since he would step in the car that would most likely be in the Top 35 after Race 5 because of DJ's Provisionals. Also, DJ DID get the 44 into the Top 35, but it fell out briefly after Martinsville. McDowell was a decent driver who got called up WAY to early, but that's another story. I know you think Michael Waltrip is a total failure in life, and I'm not the biggest fan of his either. But let me ask you this: how many teams would be willing to sign a 37 year old with virtually no Cup experience on to drive as a rookie for a new team? I didn't see any other team lining up at Reutimann's door. But like you said, it's nice that Reutimann finally get to remove that asterisk from his name in the win column. Frankly, I think it say something that he did it before the other '09 first time winner with an asterisk (you know, the one who get a lot more hype than Reutimann). 38. He's most famous for winning the Daytona 500 3 times, but he has won at all 3 short tracks, Dover, Rockingham (to go along with a TON of 2nd place finishes there), Darlington (multiple times), and Phoenix (where he blew a tire under green, pitted, lost a lap, made up the lap and retook the lead all without a caution at a little track, perhaps his greatest race). At Indy in 1998, he ran out of gas under green about 7 feet past the enterance of pit road, loast 3 laps coasting around and getting it refired, made ALL of the up despite no lucky dogs, wave arounds, or other welfare systems. If they had those, or if the race was 500 miles, then he wins. Although he never won a road course he didn't totally suck on them. He was a well rounded driver. I just feel his "retirement tour" at the beginning of 2008 kinda threw a wrench into MWR's growth. He should have stepped aside at the end of 2008 since he already had a really good TV gig lined up. But I didn't mean to put him down. I think he did an admirable job at Yates from '03 through '06 while they were clearly crumbling. And I think in '07, when he realized how bad MWR sucked in the pre-Kauffman days, he kinda threw in the towel mentally and focused on getting the ESPN gig, which he did. But he was classy about it the whole way. 47. I think one thing that's forgotten about Jarrett is the fact that -- despite his last name -- he came up the hard way. That is to say, he bounced around in the Sportsmam/Busch Series for quite a few years, hoping to get any chance at the Cup level. He took whatever crappy Cup rides came his way, hoping to get a shot at the big level. His first two wins were perhaps his most impresssive: outdueling two of the sports' best. People also forget that he got a ton of shit for his mediocre 1995 season, and many questioned why Yates would give him a chance in 1996. It was also the last time Chicagoland would be scheduled as a night race. From 2011 to 2017 the race served as the opening round of the Chase in September and was a day race(even though a rain delay caused the 2013 running to be run mostly at night). In 2018 the race was moved back to the summer as a daytime event again. 57. Daytime summer races at this facility are brutal, with temps generally reaching the mid-90s. Add to that the fact that this track is one of the most expensive to attend, and it explains why I've never been back. However, the quadruple-header has definitely got this track back on my radar to attend in 2020. 58.
