Elliott Sadler had a horrific crash that saw the engine (basically the entire front end) fly out of the car. 2. 18fan posted: 08.01.2010 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) More dumb driving by Jimmie running straight through the back of Kurt Busch to start the big crash. Good win for Biffle, showed he could win last week and pulled it off this week. The 48 team got off in the middle of the race when Gordon ran him down and never got it back. Jeff Burton is the only driver in the top 7 in points without multiple wins this season. 3. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.01.2010 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (2) (2) Thank God Elliott Sadler is OK. That is the most vicious hit I've seen in a long time. Congrats to the Biff. He is a hell of a driver that has been held back by Roush Racing lately. Good call by his crew chief, but he drove the piss outta that car when they went back to green and blew 'em away at the end. And I am REALLY glad they went back green. If Sam Hornish would have become a Cup Series winner, this Series would never be the same. Did you guys hear the announcers basically begging for a caution during that really long green run? What a crock. I really wish they'd get Ricky Craven in there because he is an excellent commentator. Of course they DID throw a phony debris caution right after Dale Mears got lapped. 4. Good thing Sadler wasn't hurt badly. I forgot which driver said it but I read an article yesterday that one driver said that Pocono isn't going to fix the track until someone gets killed. The person running the track said that people are overreacting for what happened back in June. After today, NASCAR needs to say, have this in before next years race or we will cancel and move the dates somewhere else, like Iowa. 5. I hope Smoke can win at the glen next week. Jimmie drives over his head (again) and takes out Kurt. I beat Kurt isn't too happy about it. And i loved his interview. A pretty good Pokeynose race. 6. What was with no good camera angles on Sadler's crash? This further proves the point started with Gordon's crash in 2008 at Las Vegas about needing SAFER barriers on the inside of every racetrack. 8. mrittenhouse84 posted: 08.01.2010 - 7:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) First 100 laps sucked! Why wasn't Jr. Parked for not keeping minimum speed at the finish, he was crawling at that point, they Parked P.j. jones (Oh wait thats because he was in the 7) 9. 18fan posted: 08.01.2010 - 8:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brad, Oh yeah, I forgot. They are getting better since they put Marty Ried in the booth. As for Elliott Sadler I hope hes not hurt too bad because that was a terrible hit to the wall and I dont think Ive seen a whole engine fly out of a car that wasnt upside down. NASCAR needs to cut both races to 400 miles, or better yet, throw away the second date in favor for a race at Iowa, as a companion to the Nationwide event. Two devastating crashes in two straight races shows how badly safety improvements are needed at this place. Kurt's crash happened in the same way as when Dale Jr got bumpdrafted in 2006, and Sadler's crash was his first DNQ at Pocono. Biffle wins one for his sponsor, the Red Cross, his first win since September 2008 at Dover, and the first win for Ford since Jamie Mac won Talladega last November. Speaking of him, he finishes 22nd after having two straight top 5s, which is the way his season has gone. Thank God they restarted the race, I don't think I would take the sport seriously if Sideways Sam had fluked his way into a win. He finished 11th in both Pocono races this year after having his crew chief save him with strategy. 8 start and parks is absolutely disgusting, probably the highest count all year. 42. CarlEdwards99 posted: 08.02.2010 - 4:53 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) shocking how much the 48 couldn't keep up with the track and got WORSE as the race went on. It's one thing to say they are experimenting with set ups and stuff to come to the race track with, but to not be able to keep up with changes through out the race is a whole other deal. They are still the favorite to win the title, but I don't see them having one of those 3-4 win chase where they average a 5th place finish either. Another thing I noticed is Stewart is doing the exact opposite he did last season. Last season he peaked to early, this season he is under the radar and peaking just at the right time. With 2 titles already under his belt, he's my pick to win the title (after Johnson) right now. 43. But in all fairness, the "ultra-modern" Las Vegas track had a similar situation. And Phoenix had a similar wall ON THE OUTSIDE WALL before changing it recently after Matt Kenseth had an awful Busch wreck there. I like Pocono. Yes, it has moments where everything gets strung out and not much happens up front. But so do over half the tracks. Ever since their pavement has really worn out and they added that "grip strip" in Turn 3, they have had some pretty good racing there in my opinion. Plus it's nice, to me, to have such a unique track. It's almost like two additional road course races a year, with better racing (at times). As far as the excitement scale, I'd definitely rank Pocono ahead of Cali, Texas, Michigan, Charlotte, Kansas, Chicago, Indianapolis (the Mid Western fans deserve better), and Loudon (the New England fans deserve better). Yes, ESPN has improved, but they still have a ways to go. Marty Ried is an improvement over Jerry Punch, but then again anyone with a pulse could do better in the booth than Jerry (whom I have a lot of respect for personally). But Marty is good. I am somewhat disappointed in DJ though. He isn't awful, but he just doesn't add much in my opinion. Andy Petree is by far the better color commentator. I'd like to see Ricky Craven in DJ's spot. And I'd like to see them use Tim Brewer more. He hasn't had much of a chance to shine, but he is a character, a tell it like it is guy. I think he'd do good from the studio. I definitely don't think JJ had any intent of doing that, he put himself in quite a bit of danger of being wrecked too, but he should have realized you can't bump draft a car moving laterally. He has made quite a few un-JJ-like moves this year. I thought he would quit these bonehead moves once the cha$e neared, but we are getting close and he is still doing it. I thought he would have rounded into cha$e shape by now. Plus, this is three weeks in a row the #48 car got dialed out and they couldn't get it back. At this race and Chicago they were dominant early, lost the track a little, and never contended again. And at Indy they had by far the best car in the practices, but were junk all day on Sunday. Is this the opening the competition needs? petty43 and Smiff, you guys hit the nail on the head about the #1 team. They just aren't consistently fast. They have good weeks of Top 5 runs and finishes, but then they have races like this where they struggle to run 20th. I honestly think missing the cha$e will be a good thing for them. they can just focus on being fast every week instead of points racing. 62. The Winner's Circle program awards cash bonuses to the top 10 winning teams of the previous season and the first two winning teams not on that list from the current season. Those with more wins in the past season earn more money in the current season, I believe. Stewart won four times; Biffle didn't win. So that makes sense to me. I believe there are also cash bonuses per race for the top 25 teams from the previous season in order of points. However, neither of those explain why the 7 would make more money than the 88. That doesn't make any sense. 63. Sean posted: 08.02.2010 - 6:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, Stewart might have gotten some money from winning the pole. I hope I have to eat these words, but I just have a feeling he will kill them again. Think about this: What did the #48 team have to prove going into this season? 1) That they could win at Bristol. It happened. 2) They could win on a road course. It happened. And 3) They could surpass Gordon and the #24 team's championship total and get closer to titles #7 and #8. This whole season, they have given me a "when does the cha$e start?" vibe. After they won 3 of the first 5 races (including the breakthrough Bristol win) they were running a full blown R&D setup at Martinsville, the SIXTH race of the season. Why? They already have 6 wins there, they put it aside for the bigger picture. And the line of mistakes JJ has made, it is like he is bored out there and is trying to see just how far on the edge he can drive it. I think at Chicago, Indy, and Pocono, they tried experimental adjustments, making sure every possible base is covered for the final 10. I just hope I am wrong. 70. Biffle's now won at least once in 7 of his 8 full seasons in Cup. Roush Racing's first win of 2010 is their 117th career win in Cup. Tony Stewart won his 12th career pole, 2nd of 2010 and 2nd at Pocono. Smoke's 2nd place finish makes him the 19th driver in Cup Series history to have at least 150 top fives in a career. It's his 3rd runner-up finish of 2010, and 18th top ten in 24 Pocono starts. Carl Edwards gets his 4th straight top ten, and 2nd top five in the last 3 races after only 1 in the first 18 races of the season. The 4 top tens is his longest streak since 4 in a row from May to June last season. Kevin Harvick hits double-digit top fives for the year, the first time he's done so since he had 15 in 2006 and for the 3rd time in 10 full seasons in Cup. Harvick has 5 top fives in the last 6 races, his best stretch of races since he had 5 top fives in a row in 2006. Denny Hamlin now has at least 8 top fives in all 5 of his full seasons in Cup. It's his 55th top five and 88th top ten in 172 career starts. 5th is his 7th top five in 10 starts at Pocono, 3rd straight. Jeff Gordon gets just his 2nd stand-alone top 10 of the season, both 6th place finishes. It's his 25th top ten in 36 Pocono starts. Mark Martin gets his first top ten in the last 8 races, his first since a 4th at Charlotte way back in May. It's his 33rd top ten in 48 starts at Pocono. Jeff Burton gets his 4th straight top ten, his longest streak since he ended 2009 with 4 straight top ten's. It's his 6th top ten in the last 10 Pocono races. Martin Truex Jr. gets his first top ten in the last 11 races, first since finishing 7th at Richmond back on May 1st. Jimmie Johnson led the most laps in the race (96) and is now the series leader in laps led with 879. It's his first top ten since winning at Loudon 5 races ago. Jimmie could become the first driver to lead the series in laps led for 3 straight seasons since Dale Earnhardt did so 5 years in a row from 1986 to 1990. Sam Hornish Jr. leads laps and finishes 11th for the 2nd straight race at Pocono, which is his best finish of 2010 so far. Hornish has led a career-high 45 laps this year after leading only 5 combined laps in his first two seasons. Paul Menard gets his 4th straight top 20 finish, his 12th of 2010. His previous career high in a season was 8 in 2008. David Ragan gets his 3rd straight top 20 finish, 4th in the last 5 races. Clint Bowyer's 15th place finish cost him some points on 13th; now he's only 34 points ahead of Mark Martin for the final Chase spot. JPM started on the front row for the 3rd time in the last 5 races, but over that stretch he has no top tens with two finishes of 16th as his only in the the top 20. Matt Kenseth finishes outside of the top ten for an 8th straight race, although he's finished between 12th and 18th in 7 of them. In these 8 races he's gone from being 238 points ahead of 13th to 152. When I went to look it up I thought it would be worse than this, at this rate he'll probably make the Chase. Brad Keselowski gets his 3rd straight top 20 finish. 73. On lap 165/200 in the 2010 Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500, ESPN, the network broadcasting the race, had their cameras focused on a battle between drivers, Jimmie Johnson (48) and Kurt Busch (2). As the cars, went down the Long Pond Straightaway, named after the town the track was in and the pond in the woods, behind the straightaway, Clint Bowyer (33) pulled to Johnson's outside. As the cars raced down the straightaway, Kurt Busch trying to move in front of Johnson, turned down, only for Johnson to already be there, turning Kurt into the outside wall. As Kurt hit the wall, Johnson moved past him, but Clint, having nowhere to go, slowed down, as Kurt brushed against Clint's bumper. In the chain reaction that followed, cars began to check up. One car that did not, was the #43 of AJ Allmendinger. Allmendinger, not seeing the wreck, did not get checked up and ran into the back of his teammate, the #19 of Elliott Sadler, causing Sadler to spin left, into the infield grass, as shown by a thought lost, but recently found NASCAR Raceview clip. The ESPN cameras, focused on Busch, showed him spinning into the inside wall, and back up onto the track, with only one camera angle catching the other wreck unfolding, simultaneously. As Kurt spun, towards the inside wall, Elliott Sadler was doing the same, As Kurt made contact with the inside wall, slightly, one ESPN camera showed the spinning Elliott Sadler slam the guardrail, lining the track's inside, head-on. The impact was the greatest ever recorded in the sport's history. The cameras would not see any more of the crash. As Kurt spun to a stop, on the apron of the tracks, Sadler's car, turned right , into the guard rail, laid at a roughly 110 degreee angle, slamming the railing, crunching up the rear bumper of the car, as all camera views missed the remaining seconds of the crash, focused on Kurt. What happened next is my own personal opinion. Some theorists claim Sadler's car flipped in mid-air, others claim he simply spun back onto the track, while others claim he went airborne, but didn't flip. The theory of Sadler, simply staying grounded and spinning to stop is all but impossible. One aerial view taken, during the cleanup, showed a large spot in the grass, some 20-30 yards, away from where Sadler impacted the guardrail, where something had landed, and dug into the Earth. This image, as well as a blurry, but still visible onboard shot, from Kurt's rear bumper, where for a moment, through the flying grass, a big black object can be seen in mid-air. This is believed to in fact be Sadler's car. The harder question, is whether or not Sadler's car flipped over, while in mid-air. The most realistic way Sadler could've flipped, would be like Steve Grissom's flip at Atlanta in 1997, also on ESPN. Grissom spun, trying to avoid a spinning Jimmy Spencer, before slamming the emergency exit wall on the back straightaway, similar in itself, to Jeff Fuller's Busch Series crash at Kentucky in 2006. Grissom, after slamming the wall, rear bumper first, flipped over in mid-air, and spun back onto the race track. The angle at which Sadler hit, was similar to the one Grissom hit. Pocono, also is one of the fastest tracks on the tour, with Allen Bestwick even stating a year later, in the same race, that the same Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch, were beating and banging, in "A high speed part of the track," in the same spot where Sadler was turned. So, Elliott Sadler hit at the right angle, and a high enough speed to potentially flip. However, a flip does not seem to be what actually happened. In a later interview, Sadler stated that he remembered the nose of the car, angled towards the ground, while the rear bumper in the air. Ultimately, the car likely went airborne, and ended up at a 90 degree angle in mid-air, similar to Ryan Preece's crash at Kansas, earlier this year. The car would eventually straighten itself back out in mid-air, land ing on all four wheels, bouncing slightly, before finally returning to Earth for the final time, with the engine coming out of his car in the process, before rolling to a stop on track. In the end, Sadler suffered only loss of breath, and soreness, with no known injuries. If you've made it this far, then thank you for listening to my rambling 114.
