Greg Biffle took the blame earlier in the race, he said he had no idea they were 3 wide and turned down. "Oh look, it's nearly chase time and look who's back." To be fair, he's been here. He's just lacked luck. Montoya didn't take him out tonight :) 8. Sure Jeff has taken himself out of a couple wins this year, but for the most part racing luck and Steve Letarte has prevented him from winning the past few years. 12. potatosalad48 posted: 09.06.2010 - 1:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) all but 2 drivers locked up their chase spots 2nite. good to see the 48 running well again. 13. Someone mentioned that he hasn't been great since 2007, well other than being 2nd in points right now, he also has 11 second place finishes, and 8 third place finishes since the beginning of 2008. With just a little bit more luck, how many of those would have been wins? Instead, Jimmie Johnson has all the luck that Gordon used to have when it comes to pulling out a close race. It IS surprising that Gordon hasn't won more races these past couple seasons, because he DOES still have the passion and talent. The guy just can't buy a friggin' break these days. Some of it is poor calls in the pits, and at least a couple have been Gordon messing up on a late restart. But you are crazy if you think Gordon has lost it. Those 2nd's and 3rd's could start turning into wins at any time. Hell, Gordon could win 5 times next year and I wouldn't be surprised. Great drivers are allowed to have slumps. 18. I'm a Kurt fan, and I'm incredibly pleased to finish 6th with a 25th place car. But I'm the exact opposite from you, I'm totally concerned this team's performance is going straight to the gutter at the wrong time. Other than Watkins Glen, Kurt hasn't had a top 5 car since Daytona in July. They've been a 8th-12th place car weekly for a while now, and tonight was the worst they've been this season except for maybe Chicagoland where unfortunatly they couldn't capitalize on strategy and ended up 26th. At a track he won on earlier in the year too. Kurt would be higher in points if it weren't problems not of his doing at Pocono and Michigan, but I'm REALLY concerned this team is falling off. 22. This is the first race in a loooonnnnggg time that he didn't start and park, and he actually does a decent job and finishes 24th. David Gilliland also had a solid 20th place finish, with Kvapil in 29th. The pathetic joke that is Kevin Conway can never seriously sniff finishes like that in those same cars. Neither of those three drivers are world beater drivers either. I seriously want to know why Extenze insists on sponsoring this guy, he's never accomplished anything at any level and he's wasting a spot in the field every week. Marcos Ambrose quietly gets a top 10. I hope he can do some solid things with RPM next year. Reed Sorenson comes home a respectable 14th at his home track, but he's been incredibly underwhelming driving for a team that made the chase last year with Brian Vickers. Regan Smith spent most of the night in the top 20 and got a nice 17th place finish for a pretty bad team. Just thought I's give props to some of the good runs by the smaller guys. 30. You come back to the track that you ran so well at and follow it up with a total flunker. Brad got flat out beat by the Jenkins Mobiles of Gilliland and Blaney as well as the part time team of the wood brothers. Brad almost got beat by the #13 Germain clunker and of course the 7 cylinder man of Joey Logano. Brad Keselowski was a lap down then entire race, and never once did Jay Guy elect to take the wave around. That's right even on the caution with 21 wave arounds, Brad and them pitted. Then Brad lost control and spun out causing a caution. You know who I feel the worst for KURT BUSCH. The dude is putting on a clinic this year for that organization recording every Win, Top 5, and Top 10. But this will hurt him come chase time. If they're off on the setup who are they going to ask help from??? The team that is out to lunch or the team that is out to dinner. Basically Kurt Busch and the #2 team are a single car team and that will doom them in the chase. Brad better step up and drive harder, and Jay Guy needs to smarten up, because at this rate they will embarrass Roger Penske, Miller Lite and the fans when the Blue Deuce has it's worst year in a long time. 35. On a track that is really worn out and shreds tires, that makes for interesting racing. But of course that got broken up when NASCAR threw a "Junior Caution" (the exact same thing happened in the Spring of '04 after a long green stretch to begin the race). June gets lapped and *poof* debris magically appears (well, actually it never appeared). That led to the "cautions breeding cautions" thing, and totally broke up the rhythm of the race for a good two hours. I hate the people that run NASCAR. First they take a date away from this track with excellent tire-shredding slipping-and-sliding racing (as they did with Darlington and Rockingham twice), then they turn this race into a Hollywood production. Honestly, I'd rather them take Charlotte's Fall race away, and I live just one hour North of that track. The racing there sucks. Move Darlington's race back where it belongs, on Labor Day, move Atlanta's Spring race to Mother's Day (if they can get a decent crowd in Darlington on that date, they can get one at Atlanta), and give Atlanta the EARLY October cha$e date currently held by Charlotte. AND RUN ALL OF THOSE RACES DURING THE DAY!!! It's like somebody said earlier, sitting in traffic at midnight sucks. I've done many times after the World 600. Luckily, it ended with some good racing. And yeah, like Mike said, guess who's back? JPM awoke a sleeping giant at Bristol. As if we didn't have enough reasons to dislike JPM. After six solid years in a row of being right in the middle of the mental grinder that is the Sprint Cup Championship battle (winning 4 of them), it looked like the #48 team had finally been worn out emotionally (especially JJ). It finally looked like they wouldn't be able to make that soul cruching cha$e charge they usually make. Then Juan screwed it all up. As I said, it seemed this year JJ was especially spent mentally, as evidensed by all his screw ups. Always dreadfully boring to a fault, JJ had been especially emotionless this year in public. Plus, most of the competition was smart by not ruffling his feathers and waking him up. Even Kevin Harvick has been very careful lately in what he says about JJ (after making the infamous "golden horseshoe" comment, and watching JJ win 2 of the next 3 races). They all knew he was having a down year, and that messing with him would get his mind back into gear. He isn't Kyle Busch. When pushed, he doesn't whine like a little girl, and hurt himself trying to hurt others. He digs deeper and takes it out them by beating them on track. There is a precedence for this. Jeff Gordon in 1998. Rusty woke him up by dumping him at Richmond. Look at his stats that year before that. Much like JJ this year, he had his share of wins, but also had a lot of sub-par finishes after 3 straight years of being in the middle of the championship fight. Then he got awoken and went on a historic tear, winning 13 races including a "F*** You!" win in the last race at Atlanta after he had already clinched the Winston Cup. The same thing is happening now. Another thing to think about: JJ's Loudon win after a bumping match with Kurt Busch. When asked about getting bumped out of the way by Kurt, JJ showed more emotion than I have seen from him since..... well..... EVER! He got ruffled, he got mad, and he won. But everything settled down after that as the rest of his competitors tip toed around the mentally exausted sleeping giant. Then JPM just turns him head on into the wall ON THE STRAIGHTAWAY at Bristol. Now this giant is awake and ready to pounce. Thank You Juan. I was actually looking forward to a wide open cha$e this year. Asshole. 38. DaleSrFanForever posted: 09.06.2010 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "What an embarrassing performance by the #12 team." I agree. That is the luckiest 25th place finish ever. They were a 37th place car. Seriously, as I said on the NWide page, they should see if Paul Wolfe, whom Brad has great chemistry with, can do anything for the #12 team. What's the worst that can happen? They can't get much worse than they are now. I think we can officially proclaim this Brad/Jay Guy experiment a failure (not Jay's fault or Brad's fault, they just don't have any chemistry). Get a head start for next year, and just start throwing shit at the wall and see if anything sticks. If Paul doesn't work out in Cup, then look elsewhere in the off season. They can eliminate that option. The biggest thing is, if they don't improve soon, Brad will probably want to run at least 30 NWide races, if not more, again next year to keep his confidence up the way he has this year, regardless if he is eligible for points or not. That will once again take focus from Cup, where it should be, and continue this vicious cycle. 39. RCRandPenskeGuy posted: 09.06.2010 - 12:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As far as I am concerned, Brad and the #12 team are treating the Cup Series as their hobby playground when their true focus in on Nationwide. At this rate, he's going to be lucky to even finish in the top-25 in points with a team that is probably a top-20 team. He better not keep up this performance next season when he is driving the Blue Deuce, otherwise Miller won't be happy. 40. While it's true he's on his longest winless streak, he is still one of the most consistent top 5 top 10 finishers. Compare his SLUMP to Harvick's last year (around 20th) and Jeff (2nd) is by far way ahead. Wins or not Jeff and that team are STILL one of the best EVER. They're close enough they could win anywhere. Where as Jr. -- well they're just getting worse; I see no confidence in the crew chief by the driver or vice versa. Without a major overhaul this winter I wouldn't be surprised to see that team down to around 30th in points. 41. Red posted: 09.06.2010 - 12:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Once again, the wave-around rule nullifies everything that happened during the first 3/4 of the race. When the first caution came out, there were only 16 cars on the lead lap. By the end of the race there were 24, including some slugs who had no right to be up there. My God this rule makes my blood boil. Otherwise an entertaining race, as is the case with most Atlanta events. Worn out pavement is the best! I wonder if they could sandblast all the newer surfaces and make every track a tire grinder...probably not, but that would be awesome. The new 16-man proposed chase format will be a train wreck if it's actually implemented. And nascar and their stupid fake cautions. The race was going great, and then they had to throw out a fake debry caution. It ruined a lot of the race. That team, minus a few flashes of brilliance and luck has been a 20th-30th place team. Either way, Brad needs to get out of the Nationwide Series and focus on what matters, and more importantly give Parker Kligerman a full-time ride. And get rid of Jay Guy. Dude doesn't know what's up. Red posted: 09.06.2010 - 6:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) martin-n-rusty, I see your point about the wave-around being a gamble, and under normal circumstances, the rule isn't so bad. However, when there's several quick cautions in a row, it's no longer a gamble and it becomes just a free lap. Maybe if they allowed wave-arounds only after green flag runs of 20+ laps, then it wouldn't be abused so much. But still, I think the beginning and middle portions of the race have become relatively meaningless, and that's a shame. I'd like to see Nascar award bonus points for running position at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 distance to give teams more incentive to run hard all day. 51. I think if NASCAR offered points at certain points during the race (1/4, 1/2, and 3/4), that it would increase the competition thought the race. The points system today worked for its time, but now, its pretty much antiquated 57. 18fan posted: 09.06.2010 - 10:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hope Carl Edwards took notes from Kasey Kahne on how to repay someone on a high speed racetrack. Both SHR cars have gone to victory lane this year, and their Chase record will likely be 3 for 4 after Richmond. It's Tony's 3rd Atlanta win, making him the 7th active driver to have at least 3 wins at Atlanta. It's his 14th top ten in 24 starts there. This makes it 12 straight seasons that Tony Stewart's won a race, the longest active streak (Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson are 2nd with 9 straight winning seasons). It's the 10th longest streak of winning seasons in Cup history overall, but only one behind Lee Petty's record for winning seasons to start a career with 13. Tony would already hold that record for the modern era. Richard Petty 18 David Pearson 17 Rusty Wallace 16 Ricky Rudd 16 Darrell Waltrip 15 Dale Earnhardt 15 Jeff Gordon 14 Cale Yarborough 13 Lee Petty 13 (first 13 seasons) Tony Stewart 12 Dale Jarrett 11 Buddy Baker 10 Bill Elliott 10 Bobby Allison 10 For Tony and Lee Petty it's EVERY season they've run, it's just that they both started out "full time" (Lee Petty ran 6 of 8 races in 1949). If you go by just full seasons then Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin have active streaks going at 9, 6 and 5 respectively. Carl Edwards gets his 7th top ten in the last 8 races, which includes runner up finishes and 5 top fives. The 32 laps Carl led are more than he had led in his previous 46 races combined (13 laps led). It's Carl's 7th podium finish in 13 Atlanta starts. Jimmie Johnson gets his first top five and just his 2nd top ten in the last 8 races. It's Jimmie's 10th top five in 19 Atlanta starts. Jeff Burton scores his 6th top ten in the last 8 races, his 8th top five in 33 starts at Atlanta. Kyle Busch equals his top ten total from all of 2009 with his 13th of the season. It's his 4th top ten in the last 6 races and 2nd straight top five. It's only his 3rd top ten in 13 starts at Atlanta, but they're all top fives. Kurt Busch gets his 5th top ten in his last 7 Atlanta starts. Clint Bowyer gets his first top ten at Atlanta that isn't a 6th place finish; Clint had 4 finishes of 6th in 9 starts heading into this past weekend's race. Ryan Newman has back-to-back top tens for the 3rd time this season, first since Richmond and Darlington. Newman started 2nd, just coming up short of winning a record 8th pole at Atlanta; it was his 9th front row start in 18 starts there. JPM scores his 4th straight top ten finish, tying the longest of his career (4 straight top fives to start the Chase in 2009). It's his 4th top ten in 8 Atlanta starts. Marcos Ambrose scores his 7th top ten in 66 oval starts, 2nd of the season. Matt Kenseth gets his 15th top 20 finish in the last 16 races, but he only has 4 top tens over that span. Reed Sorenson has back-to-back top 15 finishes for the first time since Phoenix and Talladega in April of 2009. Reed had 4 straight finishes of 27th or worse at Atlanta coming into this weekend after 3 top tens in his first 5 starts at his home track. Regan Smith scores his 7th top 20 finish of the season. David Ragan started in the top 10 for the first time this season; he had gone 51 straight races without a top 10 start, having an average starting spot of 26.9 over that span. David Gilliland has just his 3rd top 20 finish in 21 starts this season. Mark Martin has just 2 top tens in his last 16 starts with an average finish of 18.2 over a drought that has cost him a spot in the Chase for 2010. Denny Hamlin won his 8th career Cup pole, making it 6 straight seasons to start his career winning at least 1 pole. He led 74 of the 143 laps he ran until his engine blew up, the most he'd ever led in a race at Atlanta. 62. Stewart for forcing him down there and Smith for going there (even though he didn't really have a choice). Personally, I can't stand the fact that there even WAS a penalty. It's crazy.......I've watched both that finish and the Edwards/Keselowski finish many times. Both scenarios were IDENTICAL, except that Regan flinched while Kez didn't. It's a shame. I really believe that Regan Smith's got a lot of potential, and a win on that day in 2008 would have totally changed his career. It's a shame it came down to a judgement call on NASCAR's part. Instead of getting a ride with a top-notch organization, he's forced to get all that he can out of the Furniture Row cars, while Keselowski signed with Penske. 66. martin-n-rusty posted: 09.08.2010 - 4:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Smiff, I disagree with that. That win just made everything explode. 67. Talon64 posted: 09.08.2010 - 6:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To me, that Talladega race was karma making up for Tony's flat tire in the Coke 600. It's too bad it was at Regan Smith's expense, that win could've helped the #01 get sponsorship to stay running for 2009. But I think Regan's done a great job with the #78, they get some support from RCR but it's still a single car team that's 30th in the owners standings thanks to Regan. 68. Regan has a world of potential, and he's shown flashes of brilliance. But despite the full support of Furniture Row Racing, he'll never rise above 15-25th place in that car. I'd rather just see Furniture Row sponsor him to a top level ride, just to see if he can do anything. 69. And well Tony did force Regan BUT Regan also passed Tony. Which if your rmemeber the rule 'you can't advance your postion EVEN if your force below the yellow line.' So since Tony forced Regan and Regan passed Tony. So in a sense you drop both to back and give Paul Menard the win and move everyone else up 2 places. Regan Smith IMHO screwed himself over by: 1. for NOT making his pass on the back strech 2. for not using his teammate 3. for wussing out and not holding his ground 70. Even before Brad's win at Dega, he was in talks with Rick to take over the #5 car for this year because, at the time, Mark indicated he just wanted to do one last full Cup season. But Mark quickly realized just how good the HMS cars were and remembered how much fun it is to run up front all the time, and decided he wanted more years. Unfortunately the resolution to that hasn't worked out very well for anyone this year. Mark insisted on running the setups from last year, but those were outdated and he hasn't contended at all this year. Or maybe somebody from the #5 team made that decision, but Mark is taking the blame because he's Mark Martin, and Mark Martin doesn't throw anyone under the bus. Ever. And for Brad, he has not found the combination he like in Penske's cars the way he did at HMS. Actually, that is quite an understatement. I didn't expect much from them this year seeing as how the #12 team has been stuck at mid pack since 2006 and everyone was new to each other AND inexperienced in Cup. But this year has still been a colossal disappointment. Even by my low expectations they disappointed me. 72. I see what you guy are saying. And I'm not debating that. We (all us hardcore fri/sat/sun fans) had known what he was capable of, but what I was getting at was that Regan would've gotten the same 'overnight sensation' coverage that Keselowski got. The fact is, June is a black hole. He just sucks the energy out of everyone near him. Poor Mark. His bad racin' luck just continues. If I'm Rick, I'm putting the worst of my employees (who are still pretty damn good compared to the rest of the garage) with the #88 car next year and in 2012 if June doesn't do the right thing and walk away.
