I'm the same way. In my band, I'm a pretty big part of the writing process and musical composition, yet I'm not that great at writing lyrics. The lyrics themselves actually aren't that bad (usually - sometimes though I'll listen back to a song and "facepalm" my lyric choice). It's just that it takes me a ridiculous amount of time to write them, as opposed to my bandmate who can literally write an entire sheet of lyrics in about ten minutes. So when it comes to the actual composition of the lyrics, I suck big time. Epic job with that "Rocket Man" composition, David, lol. That was seriously entertaining and well done. 29. I have a theory for that. Perhaps, since Jeff Gordon had originally missed the Chase, the 24 team was set to go on a hot streak simply because he wasn't in the Chase. If Jeff was in the Chase, he would instantly encounter problems that put him in a hole, like last year at Chicagoland with the stuck throttle. It seems like that happens to bubble drivers: the ones who barely miss the Chase have a good 10 weeks (Jamie Mac 2004), whereas the guys that make it in, struggle (Vickers 2009). But since NASCAR added Gordon on a later date, and his destiny was already set, he's about to have a great 10-week stretch as if he wasn't in the Chase. The racing gods have already dealt his hand. HAHA! 31. NicoRosbergFan posted: 09.21.2013 - 6:52 am Rate this comment: (1) (2) ESPN commercial: "12 drivers, 1 champion" Is that an anachronism? 32. Eric posted: 09.21.2013 - 11:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) BluesTravelerFan, Jimmie Johnson buying an appartment shouldn't be a big deal. The fact is NASCAR drivers own expensive homes for years. I am saying that because Jeff Gordon early this year is selling his New York City apartment for 30 million dollars. While Kyle Busch races a lot outside of NASCAR, Kyle has a 7.5 million dollar home at Lake Norman. Denny Hamlin has a 5 bedroom mansion that he bought for 3.4 million dollars in 2008. The fact is your big name cup drivers live in expensive places or own expansive items. The average fan in NASCAR needs to understand that baseball players, football players, golfers, and Hockey players do own very expensive items and NASCAR Drivers aren't any different. 39. The chase is 5 mile and a halves (6th with a late flat tire at Chicago) and 3 small flat track, plus Dover and Dega. If he runs like this every week, he could win the title to go with his other 4 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships. A win today would be a good omen. When he won the 1995 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, he won the one Loudon date that year. When he won the 1997 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship he got win #10 at Loudon. When he won the 1998 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship he won Loudon as part of his 7 out of 9 victory run. And when he won the 2001 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship he had the 9/11 delayed Loudon race until Robby Gordon pissed him off. Could I be a NASCAR PR writer or what? 96. We can talk about the mistake he made by going on the line, which by the definition of the rulebook, is considered to be out of the pit box, but that wasn't why he dropped from one end of the lead lap to the other. He was going to drop back a bunch anyway because of the call to take on four tires, which was even second-guessed by the ENTIRE ESPN announce team. Everyone on the announce team, from Rusty and Ray in the pit studio to Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the booth, criticized the maneuver. That's why he dropped back so far, and was going to drop back a lot, even if not for his mistake. If he actually had a crew chief capable of calling a race, he'd have a better shot, because his cars are capable of winning races, but his crew chief continues to screw it up for him. DSFF, you said last week that if he can win a championship with Gustafson as crew chief that you would move him up your list. I think if he can win a championship with that screwloose in his pit, he might be a candidate for godhood. David Hobbs once said of Rod Osterlund's team (when Dale Earnhardt drove for it) that he questioned the decision making of that team. But the constant race mismanagement of the #24 team would be laughable, if it wasn't sad to see happen each and every week, or at east it seems that way. But when the commentators openly question the decision making of that team, as the ESPN crew did today, then something has to be done, and in a hurry, or the end of Gordon's career will spiral downward faster than an anvil drops. 269. murb posted: 09.22.2013 - 7:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) King of the Hill is one of the greatest shows of all time. There is a difference between giving up a big points lead cause somebody won 4 of the last 5 races (as Rusty did in '88) and giving it up from bad finishes. Another example of this is Earnhardt in '93 (ironically also against Rusty). He was rock solid down the stretch, but Rusty was on fire, winning Richmond, Dover, Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and Atlanta. That, along with Dale getting caught in the wreck Rusty caused at Dover, allowed a 302 point lead to get as low as 72. 299. I know Gibbs have been dominant on the intermediates this year, but Johnson was a match for them at Chicago and will almost certainly win 1 if not 2 of the 1.5 mile oval races left. You must also consider that he should be the favorite heading to Talladega, traditionally his one weak race. He should be targeting maximum points . Kyle Busch will likely have 1 really bad finish at Talladega or Kansas and that's without his Toyota engine blowing up. Kenseth and Busch can't afford engine failures as Johnson will steal the title (see Edwards 2008). I hope one of the Gibbs drivers wins it, preferably Kenseth but I have to stick with Johnson. 302. DaleSrFanForever posted: 09.23.2013 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (3) (1) People have mentioned some of these in earlier posts, but the "what ifs" as it relates to Kenseth and his career are astounding as we realize just how much Roush held him back and how much he meant to Roush Racing. Obviously there are never any guarantees, and Roush Racing obviously doesn't "suck" and did help Matt too over the years. He never had to carry the entire organization like Dale did for RCR, but he obviously has shouldered more than his load over there and Gibbs obviously has a lot more to offer. So here we go. 1) What if Joe Gibbs had given the start up #20 team to Kenseth and Robbie Reiser in 1999? Obviousl there were other factors at work on this one. Tony was signed to Joe's development program in '96 or '97, Matt was signed to Jack's development program in '97. But what if somehow Matt and Robbie could have been the ones to take that #20 in '99? Given the loyalty Matt showed to Jack for 15 years, I think we can safely say Matt would still be there if he performed. But how much better could Matt have done if he had been in the 20 all these years? I think we can all agree Tony has more driving talent than Matt. But in these marathon Cup races, you also need a mental strength and ability to block out all the mental distraction. To put it very mildly, that has never been Tony's strength. Tony has also always had a million other things on his mind, and is very bothered by things he can't control. I don't think Matt would have done as well in his first year. I don't think he would have adapted as quick as Tony. But from 2000 onwards it would have been on. How many wins and championships would Matt have by now? Gibbs showed tons of strength in '02, '05, '08, '10-'13 with Top 5 ability in '07 (would have been near impossible to top the HMS duo) and '09(had a really good closeout). How many could Matt have got? Tony never had a chance in '06 cause he is a damn head case, and in '08 his mind was not on the #20. And Denny had it won in 2010 before an epic meltdown, and Kyle had speed in 2011 before, well, "epic meltdown" doesn't quite cover it. More like "attempted career suicide". My take? Matt wins the ones Tony won in '02 and '05 as well as '06, '08, and '10. Making him "Five Time" shooting for #6, the one walking down that pit road in that commercial. And I think we can double his win count. 2) What happens with Tony Stewart? We know Rick had him on his radar and offered him the "#25 car in '97 or '98 but Tony didn't think he was ready. With his talent, he would have been picked up by a big team. Hendrick in '00? Roush in '99 or '00? And with Tony's volitility, and the way Rick and Jack have swiftly got rid of trouble creators (the Busch Brothers), they wouldn't have shown the patience and guidance The Coach showed him. Would he still be in NASCAR? Would he have a Kurt Busch like winning journeyman career? Would he have more than one championship and 25 wins at most, assuming he wasn't black balled from the sport? Tony at JGR for all those years was the best case scenario for him. 3) What happens to Roush? What happens during that crucial stretch from '03-'05 when Mark and Jeff either moved on or already had their exit ahead of them, and they brought in Biffle and Carl and also had the Kurt '05 debacle? The constant steadying force through that was Matt. What would that have done to Greg and Carl's careers? For Carl, he has always had the desire to be the alpha dog, even though he doesn't have anything close to the necessary personality for that role. But he couldn't ever stand Matt getting so much more respect than him, so he demanded more money than him, more publicity, and sparred with him at every chance. With Carl as their "leader" from '05 to present, I predict they would be behind RCR on the NASCAR success totem pole. Which leads me to.... 4) What if Ford decides to make Matt their franchise in 2011 instead of Carl? With the big contract public mess Carl created in 2011, Ford had to either let him go or make him the face of Ford. Even though Matt was still the behind the scenes leader. From that Summer of 2011 to present Carl has won twice. Matt won 4 times since for Roush, with an additional 7 this season for Gibbs. Now Roush is totally Carl's team. How is that working? And what happens in the future if the 2 team regains its mojo and learns its lessons from this disaster of a season? They become the face of Ford, and Carl will be unhappy. He has a history with Brad anyways. Ford made a BIG error in giving Carl that much political pull (getting Fennig as his crew chief instead of Stenhouse had a minimal impact on hard headed Carl and a huge detrimental impact on the young unharnessed Stenhouse). Matt would have been much more responsible with it. 5) Would Gordon vs Kenseth be a legendary fued? Jeff has never liked Matt and has used him as his personal punching bag. But what if Matt could have close to or as many or more championships than Jeff and be within 25 wins of Jeff's legendary win total at a time where it looks like Matt is getting better with age while Jeff is looking more and more like he needs to go ahead and plan an exit strategy with each passing week. How would we be evaluating that now? 303. So I would imagine that he would have ended up there. It actually would have been interesting to see how he would have done. Sterling was a top five driver/title contender in 2001/2002 in those cars, so I'd have to think that Tony would have probably done just as good or maybe even better than Sterling did. After all, Dover's one of the two tracks where Jimmie Johnson has an advantage on everyone else (Martinsville's the other one). I think this is a vital race for Jimmie. If he doesn't at least beat the Gibbs cars Sunday, it's trouble for his aspirations of a sixth title this year. He needs to duplicate what he did for most of the second half of the race there earlier this year, except of course, minus the error on the restart that cost him a sure win. It was that race that started Johnson on his downward slide, because Jimmie started to doubts about a number of things, not the least of which was restarts and his ability to finish out races. All the things the have happened to the #48 team during the summer can be traced to Jimmie's error at Dover, because that's where their problems began. If he can get back to form, he can at least show JGR's Dynamic Dup that he's going to be there, but if he struggles, he could take himself out of contention for the title if the JGR cars don't have trouble, but if all three leading cars in the championship have trouble, the championship race then would become wide open again. 330. 12345Dude posted: 09.23.2013 - 11:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @ Zackary Shawn @ DSFF DSFF I don't think Matt would have 5 titles. And I still think way too many people sell Jimmie short. Matt said that Jimmie was "the greatest driver of all time, and he doesn't get the respect he deserves". Now obviously he has to say Jimmie is a better driver than him because he has beaten him for the 5 titles. But he could of just said "Jimmie has done better than us all these years and he's the better driver". He didn't say that, he called him the best of all time. I wouldn't say Matt would be a 5 time champion just because this is only year #1 with Gibbs. We'll have to see if he can keep this pace up. I don't see Hornish staying with Penske. And Rodger made the right move. The lineup of Brad Keselowski/Ryan Blaney/Joey Logano looks pretty scary. Also Brad and Ryan are known as the two hardest workers in the garage (along with Jimmie Johnson.) So I think they could really blend well together and work had enough to improve the whole team. People say they are from the same cloth as Jimmie Johnson as the only two things they focus on if life are NASCAR & Family. I think the reason Brad wanted Joey so bad to join Penske was 1. Joey really needed a teammate that actually believed in him. 2. Show him how much non-stop hard work pays of in NASCAR. Which I don't believe that Joey has when he was with Gibbs. I don't believe it's a coincidence that Joey has improved so much since having Brad as a teammate. Also we don't know how good Roush Racing was back when Matt drove for it. I find it interesting that Roush Racing was at its best from 2002-2005. 2002 was the time when Roush Racing had Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, and Matt Kenseth on their team. You couldn't ask for 3 better leaders. This was also Matt's third Cup Season so I don't think you really earn the label as a leader around your peers until your third season in the Cup Series (along with having success in those years.) So in 2002 they had 3 phenomenal leaders. 2004 was the last year they had multiple drivers really contend for a title. That was also the last year "the mayor" Jeff Burton was on their team acting as a leader. 2005 was their last really great year. After this they never really contended for a title other than Carl Edwards 2011 "everything went right" season. But this was their really last great year with drivers finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in points. Mark announced before the year that he would retire at the end of that season and wasn't a key member of the team for the 2006 season because that would be his last year with the team. So they lost a 2nd team leader after the 2005 season basically because he was on his way out from the team and then done with Roush Racing after 2006. 2012 was the last year they had a leader (1 left with Matt Kenseth) he leaves the team after the year. And now it's 2013 no leaders left and the team is struggling even more. CJS talks about how Jack Roush is such a mean spirited person. I wonder if Roush Racing needs team leaders on the team to counter act Jack's vile personality. The stats above don't lie. Just something to think about. 331. cjs3872 posted: 09.24.2013 - 12:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 12345Dude, I never thought about Jack Roush's personality until I heard Jamie McMurray, one of Roush's former drivers, call him a "cold" person in 2010 or 2011. And those were his words, not mine. And there are those that believe that Roush, or those within Roush Racing sabotaged Matt Kenseth's Chase chances last year with some of the crazy stuff that went on, or to be more precise, fell off Kenseth's cars early in the Chase. There are those that say that was no accident. Now I can't prove that in any way, but there are those that have said that the timing of those instances, combined with the fact that Kenseth was going to be leaving Roush Racing, was no accident. I can not prove that in any way, though it was a little suspicious, but for me, that's about as far as it went. But Kenseth's Chase was over practically before it started last year because of those bizarre issues. 332. cjs3872 posted: 09.24.2013 - 12:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) And also 12345Dude, obviously you're forgetting about Matt Kenseth in 2006, because he pushed Jimmie Johnson every inch of the way when Johnson won the title that year. You also seem to have forgotten Carl Edwards' fabulous 2008 season, when he won nine times, not to mention Greg Biffle becoming the first driver in the Chase-era winning the first two Chase races, the second of which came in a great 3-way Roush Racing duel between Kenseth, Biffle, and Edwards, which Biffle won. That meant that Roush won 11 times in 2008, which was more than any other team won that year (JGR won 10 times, Hendrick Motorsports won 8 times), so I'd say 2008 was a big year for Roush, and the one top-tier driver among Roush's drivers that didn't win that year, Matt Kenseth, won the first two races of 2009, including Roush's first-ever Daytona 500, meaning that Roush won 13 times in 37 races from the 2008 spring race at Auto Club Speedway to the 2009 race at Auto Club Speedway. To me, that's pretty dominant. 333. murb posted: 09.24.2013 - 1:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kurt Busch will apparently be number 41 next year. 334. Remember that Gene Haas was the one that pushed for hiring Kurt Busch, so he might be trying to get at Tony in a subtle way. That decision also could potentially affect car numbers for RCR down the line, since Ty Dillon used the #41 in the ARCA series, and RCR might have had the idea of giving Ty that number when he moves up to the Cup Series in the future. And going back to the 41 being 14 backwards, that's why A.J. Foyt has frequently used that number on his back-up/team cars in the IndyCar series. July 1979: Tries to knock down the wall at Pocono. What did it ever do to him? 1980: Wear that "Damn I'm Good" T Shirt under his firesuit. Late 1980: In the words of Sports Illustrated, cheerfully lacks reverence for Cale Yarborough. 1982-83: Breaks a lot of Bud Moore's engines, respected car owner and WW2 hero. March 18, 1984: With the birth of his soon to be biggest fan one day away, can't beat Benny Parsons at Atlanta for a nice "Welcome To The World" gift. Asshole. 1985: Wins 4 races on half mile tracks, all with the bump and run (3 on Tim Richmond). Gives birth to the infamous phrase "Dale's battle scarred Monte Carlo". February 1986: Just hung up with ol Darrell, just racing. April 1986: Spins Joe Ruttman out at Wilkesboro because...... well Ruttman certainly wasn't a threat. November 1986: As if Darrell blowing an engine early wasn't bad enough, Dale goes out and laps the field to win the race and the title just to rub it in. April 1987: He probably could have waited another lap to pass Sterling, you know, not try to squeeze between him and a lapped car. Early May 1987: During the promo shoot for the 1987 The Winston, doesn't let his best friend Neil Bonnett know Tim Richmond has his junk out right behind his ear. May 1987: All the hard work the grounds crew did at Charlotte to get the frontstretch grass looking nice for the third running of The Winston, and Dale just drove right through it. Also cut off a few cars. November 1987: Totally ruins the final running of the prestigious Winston Western 500 at Riverside by having the Winston Cup already wrapped up. October 1988: Exposes the talent difference between him and Ricky Rudd by not spinning when Rudd bumped him at Wilkesboro then spinning Ricky in the very next corner. 1988 or 1989: Lets Dale Jr come back home from military school instead of spending the rest of his childhood there. February 1989: Has the gall to question how legal the gas tank is in Darrell's Daytona 500 winning car owned by Rick Hendrick. Have Darrell or Rick ever cheated? April 1989: Tells his good and loyal friend Rusty he will lap him on his Hoosier tires at Wilkesboro with his Goodyear tires then does it. With friends like that.... October 1989: Cusses twice on National TV then gives a stupid answer to Dick Berggren's stupid question. February 1990: With a piece of bell housing just sitting on the track minding its own business, Dale hits it! Why? March 1990: Signs his autograph on two items of mine at a local Chevy dealership one hour after his scheduled time was up. Way to follow the rules Dale! Just sitting there like you are Dale Earnhardt or something. November 1990: In a joint interview with title rival Mark Martin, takes some pretty classless shots at Mark's past alcoholism. This isn't a joke. Late 1991: That title "battle". 1992: After Richard Childress kills an elk Dale had been eyeing for a few days, an enraged Earnhardt throws the entire 1992 season. 1993-2001: Is nice to Jeff Gordon off the track. April 1993: Makes that pass at Bristol that makes every other driver look inferior. May 1993: Sends his good and loyal friend Rusty on a series of horrifying flips at Dega. With friends like that.... November 1993: Wrecks Jeff in Turn 4 at Phoenix, which 19 years later, Jeff would make that only the 2nd biggest asshole move in that corner ever. By a mile. May 1995: With Mark running off with the race at Sears Point, Dale throws out a James Bond-esque oil slick to even the field. May 1995: Wrecks half the field in The Winston including himself and then gives a Kyle Busch Before Kyle Busch interview. August 1995: Declares himself "The First Man to win the Brickyard 400". August 1995: At the Bristol Night Race, wrecks Rusty, wrecks Lake Speed, wrecks Derrike Cope, wrecks Terry Labonte coming to the line, then his head gets in the way of Rusty's water bottle projectile after the race. With friends like that.... February 1996: That bump and run on Bobby Hamilton. January 1998: His most unforgivable sin yet. Gives his #3 AC Delco car to Dale Jr unleashing JOONYERR Nation which still haunts us to this day. February 1998: After his long awaited breakthrough win in the Daytona 500, totally corgets to thank JD Stacy in victory lane for letting him drive his car for 4 races in 1981. August 1999: At Bristol, makes contact with Rusty Wallace early in the race. February 15, 2001: Gives Darrell a sit down interview, legitimizing his broadcasting career. 346. I still remember what I was doing that night when that news broke, and what I was doing was watching the 1975 Indianapolis 500 film on ESPN. The ironic thing was that I had mentioned they were going to mention a NASCAR driver, because they were coming up to the point in the film where veteran voice actor Marvin Miller, who narrated that film, mentioned that Bobby Allison led the 24th and 25th lap during the first sequence of pit stops (he officially only led one of those two laps). I had no idea that they were going to cut in with the tragic news of Alan's death in that plane crash. But the truth is, we'll never know what Alan would have done. Would he have been a "flash-in-the-pan" champion who won in a fluke year, or would he have more races, including big races, and contend for more championships? Quite frankly, I'm not sure, because he was 38 at the time of his death and that was just over two years before Jeff Gordon started the youth movement by winning the 1995 championship. Remember that he was two years older than Terry Labonte, who won the championship in 1996, but then saw his career come crashing down on him starting in the second half of the following year. Also remember that Kulwicki's title came before the era of multi-car teams, so it's quite possible that Kulwicki might have been one of those drivers that caught lightning in a bottle and then returned to the role of a bottom of the top 10 driver, at best, as far as points are concerned. In fact, he only finished in the top ten in points one other time (1990, when he was eighth), and he finished 13th the year before he won the title. It's quite possible that his career had only five good years left at the time of his death, so I think that Kulwicki was a fluke champion, and quite frankly, have always felt that way about him. 364. My opinion on this is that I don't know if he would have done a lot more as a driver, but I do think he would have wound up being an excellent team owner. His organization would probably be amongst HMS and JGR as powerhouse teams. Remember all the Matt Kenseth "what if" stuff we were talking about earlier this week? How about this one: Kulwicki doesn't die in a plane crash, drives for a few more years (let's say he retires after 1999), tabs fellow Wisconsin driver Matt Kenseth to replace him in the 7 car for 2000. Imagine Matt Kenseth having Alan Kulwicki as his owner and mentor. In fact, his relatively brief NASCAR career was the classic rags-to-riches story, as he went from nothing all the way to the pinnacle in just seven years. What I was referring to was the fact that he won the championship more because others lost it, rather than just going out and winning it himself. That combined with the fact that he never finished higher than eighth in any other season, and that was his only other finish higher than 13th, was why I called him a fluke champion. I wouldn't at all be opposed to his life being made into a movie, though I'm not sure it should be any time in the next 10 years, because there are fans who still remember what happened. That's also why I think the movie made about Dale Earnhardt was made far too soon. I don't think that should have been made until about 2015-'18 for the same reason. Too many bad memories for too many fans. 368. Alan didn't have Factory support and take a look at what happened to single car owners at the 2nd half of the 1990's. Morgan Mcclure went down starting in 1996 although they won 2 times with Sterling Marlin. JGR was good with Bobby Labonte, but Bobby's best 2 seasons happened when they became a 2 car team. Wood Brothers was going downhill. Yes, Morgan Shepherd in 1995 was starting to show his age and Michael Waltrip isn't what I call a good hire for a driver. The fact is the Wood Brothers still would have had problems. The Wood Brothers because less competitive for rest of the 1990's when they had Waltrip and Sadler. 369. And at Rockingham, Nascar proved they wanted Big E to win the title when they threw a caution to give Dale his lap back, while at the same time, throwing the caution TWICE while Jeff Gordon was on pit-road costing him two laps!! Costing him another 43 points. 97+43 = 140 lost in two races of shit luck, not "fading". At Phoenix, Jeff all but locked up the title by finishing fifth to close-out the Championship with his 17th Top 5 of the year. At Atlanta, Gordon led lap 61 to lock-up the title mathematically. Then immediately pulled into the pits for the entire team to celebrate the Championship, and then returned to the track and cruised around losing 113 points due to apathy. While Dale won the race in vain and could care less about the win. I'm not going to debate 1996, since Jeff had the better year even if Terry collected 37 more points. 8 more wins, especially when it's a Darlington sweep, Dover 500 mile race sweep, and wins at ALL four short-tracks, is better than 37 more points. 371. The reason the other teams you mentioned "went down" is because they either didn't really have the best leadership (Morgan McClure), or because they fell behind technologically and made bad driver choices (Wood Brothers). But Alan was a good leader, and from what I've seen and heard, he was a wizard with the technology side of things. And he obviously had a great eye for talent when it came to hiring crew members (Paul Andrews, Tony Gibson), so I'm sure he would have had the same eye for up and coming drivers. He had the brains to be a powerhouse car owner in the sport. Pressure in a title race was Dale's best friend. In 1980, Cale pulled within 23 after The Bristol Night Race. Dale brought that lead up to 115 over the seasoned vet with back to back wins at Martinsville and Charlotte. This gave him the cushion he needed for a bad race at Rockingham (18th, Cale won). He then finished 3rd at Atlanta (another Cale win) and 5th at Ontario to bring home the Winston Cup in just his second season. In 1986, after Darrell won a late season race at Wilkesboro to get within 129 points of Dale, Dale responded with two foot to the throat wins at Charlotte (came back from 2 laps down) and Atlanta in a alk off. In 1990, the very same Mark you mentioned LED Dale for the entire second half of the season with stunning consistency. But another foot to the throat win at Phoenix in the second to last race pit him ahead then easily disposed of Mark at Atlanta. In 1993, Rusty caught fire, winning 5 late races while a broken axle at Martinsville and getting collected in the wreck Rusty started brough the red hot #2 team within 80 points of Dale. He never folded, and never let Rusty get any closer despite his hot streak. Then there is 1994. Yes, Ernie's wreck left him with a huge lead. But he was racing something far mor Iimportant, history. With his record tying 7th championship all but assured, Dale knew sputtering amd limping to the milestone would look bad. So he raced his heart out and had 7 Top 3 finishes in the 8 races after Michigan (a 7th being the other one) to clinch it convincingly. Compare that to 1987 and 1991. In '87 he had a 600+ point lead after winning 11 of the first 22 races. With no competition, he went winless in the last 7 races (though he had 4 runner ups). And in 1991, with nobody stepping up to challenge him, he had a very sluggish closeout. Don't EVER question Dale's grace under pressure. Was he perfect under it? Nope. But he was better than anyone else. He was Joe Montana and Jeff is Peyton Manning. 382. "***The title was gift wrapped after 20 races." While I wouldn't quite use the term "gift-wrapped" to describe the 1994 title, it's true that all they had to do was RCR their way to the title, because Earnhardt wasn't losing that big lead. Irvan kept pace with Earnhardt for most of the season until his injury (and that's no small feat), and that ruined what could have been a compelling title battle. I don't think Irvan would have won the title, though, as he and the #28 team were slightly less consistent than the #3 car. But it sure would have been fun to watch, had I been alive yet. Richard Childress Racing did most of the heavy lifting early in the development on the '95 Monte Carlo, first with Neil Bonnett, and then with Dave Marcis after Bonnett's death, but they had only a single-car effort, as did most elite teams at that time, while Hendrick had three teams. But it wasn't until Terry Labonte got there in 1994 that HMS finally figured out how to make their advantage pay off. RCR had a definite advantage in terms of developing the car, and it paid off during the first half of that season, which they led almost the entire way, but Hendrick's strength in numbers, and finally figuring out how to use that advantage, was what gave them the upper hand. Remember they won three races in a row early that season (Rockingham, Richmond, and Atlanta), but it wasn't until they got more consistent that they challenged Earnhardt and Marlin for the title. And for most of the second half of the season, it was Marlin, not Earnhardt, that was second in points. Also, the Monte Carlo had such a huge advantage that year that the Fords were barely competitive and failed to have even one car finish on the lead lap at Atlanta in the spring. And by the time the Fords got a little more competitive, they had no chance of having one of their drivers win the title, though Mark Martin did wind up fourth, so the top Chevrolet teams had no competition for the championship that year, as evidenced by the fact that they clinched the manufacturer's championship at the Southern 500. Gordon's fade looked worse than it was, as the points he lost at Atlanta were totally meaningless, having already clinched the title by leading the race on the 61st lap. Earnhardt did outperform Gordon down the stretch, but the #24 team was not trying it's best to win, but only to finish where it needed to, and except for Charlotte, they did just that. 385. The plan is to get Scott prepared for a full-time Cup run beginning in 2015, assumedly with RCR (though I'm not so sure about that since Paul Menard and Ryan Newman are each signed through 2016, which is the year I would expect Ty Dillon to get moved up to Cup, thus leaving RCR with five drivers for four cars in 2016 if everyone's contracts are to be honored). 389. joey2448 posted: 09.26.2013 - 6:51 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) This debate between DSFF and JG24FF is hilarious. Oh yeah, not to mention his only support was a primary sponsorship deal with Hooters. Alan Kulwicki may very well be the most overlooked successful racer in NASCAR history, and easily the most overlooked champion." Agree with your first paragraph. Definitely DON'T agree with your second, but that's already been addressed. Maybe the racing media doesn't talk about Alan Kulwicki or Tim Richmond much, but the fans talk about them a hell of a lot and more than most of the other drivers from that era, championship or not. Kulwicki/Davey/Richmond are all talked about much more than most of the non-champions of the same era who were in the same general league (Bodine/Bonnett/Gant/Irvan/Rudd...you can argue some of them aren't in the same general league, but I don't think you can argue they're more overlooked and talked about less in general, especially Gant). But really, it's the stars before the modern era who are more overlooked. Pretty much no one ever talks about even Rex White, Fred Lorenzen, Bobby Isaac, or Dick Hutcherson now, let alone the slightly worse drivers like Jim Paschal, Marvin Panch, etc... Those drivers are more overlooked than ANY modern-era driver possibly could be. Some of the rhetoric about Alan/Davey/Tim has always struck me a bit much. Sure, NASCAR may ignore them but the fans tend to overstate their accomplishments and neglect other drivers who were similarly skilled. "If they are ever going to make a NASCAR movie about a legend other than Petty or Earnhardt then I strongly wish it would be Herb Thomas. He is hands down the greatest driver ever that no one gives a flying F about. He is easily the most over looked and seemingly most disrespected great of all time." That's a much better argument. Herb is the only driver who is less famous than his crew chief, and that's a shame. "But the truth is, we'll never know what Alan would have done. Would he have been a "flash-in-the-pan" champion who won in a fluke year, or would he have more races, including big races, and contend for more championships? Quite frankly, I'm not sure, because he was 38 at the time of his death and that was just over two years before Jeff Gordon started the youth movement by winning the 1995 championship." I think the rest of his career would have gone like Ricky Rudd's. He would have weathered the owner-driver trend for some time winning a race or two a year usually finishing 6th-10th in points and then his team would have collapsed between 1997-1999 just as all the other owner driver operations did (maybe Cal Wells would have poached HIS sponsor too). Sad but true. Yes, he had engineering talent but I don't think he would have been prepared to take on the multi-car corporate monoliths, although POSSIBLY his championship would have allowed him to attract sponsorship for another car. I'm not sure about that though, considering how much trouble Geoff Bodine had obtaining sponsorship for the #7 after he bought it when Hooters ditched his team to hook up with the kick ass Loy Allen juggernaut. Kulwicki seemed to be more of a racer and a racer ONLY than a late '90s-era marketing machine, and drivers like that tended to have trouble in the latter portions of their careers for that reason (Geoff Bodine, Ernie Irvan, and Ricky Rudd...) Actually maybe scratch off Bodine. Wasn't he supposedly the guy who was the first to rattle off sponsors in post-race interviews? "Mark your calendars for October 1st. Phoenix International Raceway will make 'a major announcement major announcement regarding the track's history and its future'." Tom Sneva will supposedly be there, so people are thinking it's an IndyCar return to Phoenix. That would be completely out of the blue, but it has been annoying to see tracks that were originally built for IndyCars (Pocono, Michigan, Fontana, Phoenix) or were at least IndyCar staples (Road America) almost completely taken over by NASCAR (not that I mind the NASCAR races at most of those tracks, and yes, I know Road America still has sports car races). All the IndyCar fans want Phoenix back but nobody's been able to find the money to do it. They badly need more ovals (and fewer street courses certainly). If they brought back the Copper World Classic (definitely more meaningful to racing history than any NASCAR races at Phoenix have been except maybe Kulwicki's first win) that would be even better, as it would forge a connection between USAC and IndyCar that's kind of been lacking lately. I'm excited about this, but I'm probably going to be wrong because people have been speculating for YEARS about an IndyCar Phoenix return and everyone keeps saying it's never going to happen (especially because ISC supposedly offered IndyCar a Thursday night date on a Cup weekend and they refused). That would also be left field because people have been speculating the only changes to next year's IndyCar schedule are the loss of the Baltimore street circuit (due to wanting to end the schedule by Labor Day) and a preliminary IndyCar race on the IMS road course on the 2nd weekend in May I guess similar to Daytona Speedweeks, but that move has a lot of haters including A.J. Foyt (and having two races at the same venue in the same month, even if in different configurations, may be overkill...I hope it doesn't hurt the 500 crowd). But if Phoenix was added, I'd be freaking excited and willing to overlook the race on the IMS road course. Also excited that they upped the Pocono race from 400 miles to 500 miles, as it should be. Basically, Tony George had the wrong approach when he was worried about grassroots American talent being locked out of CART, and CART's desire to focus on road and street course races and ignore ovals. If TG REALLY wanted to prop up oval racing, he should have bought the venues and become a rival to ISC and/or Bruton Smith because they then wouldn't have issues with finding ovals to race on, and considering TG spent several hundred million dollars (supposedly) propping up the IRL, this might have actually been cheaper. Instead, ISC owns more than half the relevant ovals and can decide who they want to race on them. The other alternative is that if CART teams were ignoring USAC talents and they were (justifiably I'd say, since front-engine USAC cars haven't really helped drivers for rear-engine IndyCars since the '60s), then TG could have started an Indy Lights team with a focus on preparing USAC talents for CART. Considering how quickly Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart picked up on road racing, it's likely that could have worked. I know one of his big gripes was the car owners having too much influence and conflicts of interest in CART, but considering he hypocritically owned a team anyway later, either of these approaches would have been a better approach than the one he took, especially the buying up ovals before NASCAR could approach. Let's hope the Phoenix announcement isn't just the announcement of a title sponsorship for some Cup race, but then why the hell would Sneva even be there? (Yes, I know he has some Cup starts and a top ten at the Daytona 500). 396. In just 6 "full" seasons counting 1950 (he missed half of one season with a broken leg when he won the Southern 500 anyways) 3 titles and 2 runner ups. He is criminally underrated. 398. I always ranked Herb as the most overlooked and underrated cup driver in NASCAR and I got him high on the list for greatest cup drivers of all time. Doing a movie on Herb Thomas must be 90 percent on his brief racing career. The fact is before 1946, Herb Thomas really didn't have an interesting life. He worked as a farmer and at a saw mill with him having a wife and kids. The only thing he did in WWII was the saw mill his Dad owned provided lumber to the military. After his 1956 crash, he went back to farming. That meant there isn't a lot in his life that can be put into a movie before and after racing. 399. "But really, it's the stars before the modern era who are more overlooked. Pretty much no one ever talks about even Rex White, Fred Lorenzen, Bobby Isaac, or Dick Hutcherson now" I know, and it's a shame, too. White won the championship in 1960 driving a car co-owned by himself and his crew chief, Louis Clements (though it's worth noting that his main championship rivals, the Petty father-son duo and Junior Johnson, were disqualified at the World 600, costing them valuable points), and he had a championship-worthy season the following year. Lorenzen is a personal favorite of mine, in that I think he is vastly underrated compared to his fellow non-champions like Fireball Roberts and Curtis Turner (don't get me wrong, they were also awesome drivers and underrated in general, just not as much as Lorenzen). Isaac was also a champion, coming from the hardest of hard upbringings (despite what legend says, he could read and write). And Hutcherson had THE rookie season of all rookie seasons, winning nine races and finishing second in overall points. All are stars of NASCAR's early days, and sadly overlooked. "so Brian France and his stooges can just put Gordon in the chase cause other teams "manipulated" the points and it affected him, but they won't right the biggest wrong in NASCAR history when the points were "manipulated" by Herb being intentionally wrecked and put in a coma and the ICU?" Their races on the oval are bad even by modern-day NASCAR standards. But the last 3 Indy 500s have been EPIC! This year's Indy 500 is literally one of the greatest races I have ever seen. Reminds me of mid 80s NASCAR pre plate Daytona and Dega racing. And it didn't even have a green flag finish! How good is a race when that doesn't bother you? I guess they want Will Power to have a chance to have an Indy win. His antics at Loudon that one year brought Indy a ton of buzz. They are rewarding him. And rightfully so. The odd thing about Sneva as far as the Daytona 500 goes was the he failed to qualify driving a second car for Mike Curb as a teammate to Richard Petty in both 1984 and '85. So while the Earnhardt name might be fading a little bit, the Allison name may eventually return to NASCAR. 410. Sean posted: 09.26.2013 - 11:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "It shows how desperate Indy Car is and is a bad idea. I am saying that because there are other courses that Indy Car could go to." No, there really aren't. The reason the IndyCar schedule is usually in flux is because very few ovals and natural road courses can afford to pay the sanctioning fees to hold a race, and I guess IndyCar doesn't think it can afford to lower them. F1 and NASCAR don't have these issues because their TV audiences are large enough (even NASCAR's current TV audience is large enough) that the TV deals ensure that the tracks will always make money, but for IndyCar, especially on the ovals, that isn't the case. The road courses had steady but declining attendance as CART devolved into Champ Car, and IndyCar didn't pick up most of the classic CART road courses when the series merged, so what they ended up with was more - more - more! street courses because city governments are usually much more willing to put up money for IndyCar races than ovals or real road courses are. Now, I'll say this. The street course racing with the DW12 is better than any street racing before it. No more races where Al Unser, Jr. and Michael Andretti leads every lap and wins by 40 seconds, and these are races are more competitive than they've ever been (even the worst street course, Belle Isle/Detroit was watchable this year, so maybe the second worst, Houston, which they're returning to because they managed to get a title sponsor will be also). Sao Paulo was a fantastic race this year. Baltimore, the 1st Toronto race, and the 2nd Detroit race were entertaining if you like wild bumper car Bristolesque crashfests (although granted all those races had more side-by-side racing than the CART street races in the '90s did). Long Beach was compelling with Takuma Sato winning in an A.J. Foyt car but... This is still way, way, WAY too out of balance especially since they decided to have double-headers on the street courses, I still find them more boring than oval or natural road course races, they are often a waste of taxpayer money, most of these circuits aren't very well designed, and many of these races last no more than five years until somebody new in power decides the race is a bad idea. Ideally, I'd keep the three that seem to have longevity, big crowds every year, and also the best layouts: Long Beach, Toronto, and St. Petersburg. Sao Paulo and Baltimore did have entertaining racing and did draw big crowds, but it never seemed like the government in Baltimore cared for the race and (even it survives, which it looks like it's not going to) I question whether Sao Paulo can possibly have staying power after Castroneves and Kanaan retire with no hot Brazilians coming down the pipeline at the moment. Essentially, IndyCar street courses are like Formula One's generic Tillkedromes and Cup's cookie cutters. In other words, if the choice is between racing on the IMS infield (as poorly designed as that course is) and yet another street course (there are rumors of a new street course in Providence, RI for 2015...spare me) I'd agree with this choice. It's not like ovals and road courses are beating down the door to lose money to pay IndyCar's sanctioning fees. Maybe they need to lower the sanctioning fees... Also, IndyCar used to count on the Brickyard 400 to help prop up the series (but the attendance has crashed) and Tony George used to count on limitless spending of the Hulman-George family fortune to prop the series up in its lean years, and his sisters had him fired and have been trying to be thrifty ever since. As far as TV ratings go, nobody watches anything except the Indy 500 anymore (which usually gets much lower ratings than flavor-of-the-month so-called reality shows now) so I don't see this race having an impact either way. The question is if it will kill 500 attendance. I really don't think so. The 500 is an institution and if people have to choose which race they'll go to, they'll keep going to the 500. I do however think attendance at the road course race is going to be very, very shitty unless they do something very smart like offering tickets to both races in a package deal (ESPECIALLY since they just raised the price of 500 tickets despite declining attendance). I think it would have been better if this race was scheduled later in the season. They want to end on Labor Day to avoid competing with football. Fine. Then have the finale on the IMS road course and bookend the summer with races at Indy. That would seem to make more sense. While I'm not a big fan of the move and on an ideal schedule I wouldn't want this, I hardly think this is going to kill the brand simply because I don't think very many people are going to choose to go to this instead of the 500. Do I think it will be profitable for the series or the track? Nah, I don't really think so. Will it be profitable for the teams and the remaining sponsors left? Probably. I can see both sides. It doesn't excite me but it doesn't disgust me and at least it's a purpose-built facility rather than more city streets... Sure, we all want an IndyCar schedule closer to this: Superspeedway: Indy, Pocono, Michigan, Fontana Intermediate oval: Texas, Chicagoland Short oval: Phoenix, Iowa, Milwaukee, Richmond Road course: Barber, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road America, Laguna Seca, Austin Street course: Long Beach, Toronto, St. Petersburg Airport course: Cleveland than what we've got, but now that street racing is actually watchable most of the time (okay, I'll admit it was also watchable when Alex Zanardi and JPM sliced through the pack on the street courses too) I still think the current schedule (lousy as it is) is more watchable than NASCAR today, but the double-headers are just lame, lame, lame and I thought so when they had one at Texas too. I know USAC and CART from the '60s to early '80s ran some double-headers so there's a history but I don't think it works for today's racing. I'd love to see the Brickyard 400 and the Coke Zero 400 replaced with races at the Indy and Daytona infield road courses though. Those are usually two of the most boring races of the entire season - even when the other places are good, the summer Daytona race usually sucks. And frequently rewards cheating! 411. I'm not entirely sure what constituted a normal race in 1951. The median purse figure was $3,675, which would have awarded 183.75 points to the winner (winners received 10 points multiplied by 0.005*race purse). That times six equals 1102.5, which isn't quite what the winner received in the Southern 500 (by the same formula, 1187, though I've read multiple times that it was 1250), but I suppose your point is that the overwhelming majority of the races in 1951 had purse figures of $3,325-$3,840, which could be considered normal. Random note: The driver who got the next-most points for winning a race that year was Tommy Thompson, who got 548.75 points for winning the Motor City 250 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit. "Had that number even been lowered to five (which would be fair, as it's five times the distance of a normal race), he loses out to Fonty Flock, who had a better season by any measurable statistic." Of course, if we're going to go down that road, Thomas didn't deserve 1956, either, as Buck Baker had him outclassed in every major statistic (of course, his numbers were inflated driving for Kiekhaefer, but that's racing). 418. Had Bell not brought sponsorship to the table, Sorenson would probably be in the #40 car once again this weekend. Besides, equipment has always played a role in determining which drivers are at the top of the sport's pecking order. How any of you can say "Buck Baker 1956 champion" and not cringe is beyond me. If NASCAR is gonna just say "they manipulated the points to help themselves without directly hurting Gordon, so we are gonna just put him in the chase anyways" then why can't they right the biggest wrong in the history of their sport? Again, you can't just say "eh, I didn't like that points system that year, so I am changing the champion". Herb Thomas had the championship won in 1956. Then NASCAR did something they would do again 30 years later with Rick Hendrick, allowed themselves to be bought. And Herb was wrecked in the extra race, had his skull fractured, went into a coma, and spent a few months in ICU. He had it won. No matter how they did the points, he had it won. Oh, and Herb's crime accordin to Carl K? He began the year driving for Carl, but decided to leave cause he didn't want to do all the traveling Carl wanted him to do, it was taking away from his time with his family. We glorify drivers like Richard Petty who missed the births of 2 of his 4 children working on his race cars. Dale Earnhardt, who gave up his first child for adoption and paid Dale Jr and Kelley about as much attention as Rick Hendrick paid the #25 team after they lost Tim, and Jeff Gordon who brought a second motor coach to race tracks to keep the girls he was cheating on Brooke with (we all can't stand Brooke, but that was really wrong).
