Sucks that Hornish missed the race, but hopefully the typical valet teams will actually try to contend since this is an RP race. 2. Remember Go Daddy is betting on sex appeal, not race results. 11. NoLongerAnonymous posted: 10.19.2013 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "There are companies that care more about a driver being marketable to their audience than results." That's pretty much EVERY sponsor. It's the nature of the business, they don't pour millions of dollars into these teams because they want to say they sponsored a winner (well, Gene Haas may be an exception depending on how you look at it), they do it to bring exposure to their brand, hopefully increasing their revenue stream and hopefully making new revenue minus sponsorship expenditures a net positive. From that standpoint, Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are easily the most sponsor-worthy drivers. Anyone who goes "OMG why is Danica being sponsored?!?!" obviously has very little business sense, she earned her sponsorship by being marketable, regardless of how good she may be at driving a stock car. It may not be a great thing for true race fans but we have to realize NASCAR is an expensive sport to be involved with and it's the sponsors who make it happen. If GoDaddy wasn't sponsoring Danica, they wouldn't be sponsoring ANYONE, and instead of Danica riding around in 20th-30th, we'd have another car in the field that parks before the first pit stop. And regardless of whatever personal opinions people might have, having Menards finishing around 15th-25th, Danicas riding around in 20th-30th, and Conways finishing 10 laps down is better than having 10-15 cars just there to collect a paycheck with no interest of racing. 15. If history holds true, it figures to be a conservative race, because nobody wants to start an incident that could knock out a number of Chase contenders. That being said, if I were the crew chiefs for one of the leading championship contenders, I would have him hang at the back for much of the day, and not make his move until the last 100 miles. Remember that, for the leading contenders for the championship, the goal is not to win this race, but to survive it, and if that means finishing 15th-20th, then so be it. Everyone talks about wanting to lead all day. But remember this. Matt Kenseth led 142 laps, nearly a single-race record for Talladega, but still ended up finishing three spots BEHIND Jimmie Johnson. In other words, if the exact same thing happens Sunday, Kenseth would still lose two points to Johnson. I would not worry about winning this race, because it's more volatile up front than it is in the back, especially with drivers running up front that usually aren't there. I would rather ride in the back all day, not risk being in a crash, and pretty much have a finish in the teens guaranteed than try to run up front, get caught in a wreck, and finish in the 30s and possibly lose a half race worth of points to guys that just ride all day, avoid the wrecks, and finish no worse than in the teens. And I wouldn't worry about getting lapped, since the rules make it so easy to make up a lap. 26. If they ran a 25 race season, then sure August would be too early to end it, but with only 15 race weekends, it's harder for casual fans to get excited with so many 2 and 3 week gaps between races. It's good for the series to end the season racing on 3 consecutive weekends as they can build up some momentum going into the finale. 29. Well, what I was saying on last week's thread--before I realized I was in the wrong place--was that I liked how they condensed the schedule so there wouldn't be such long breaks in between races. But I do think the schedule is a bit too short. It should end in mid-September, like it did last year. 32. If it happens, let's hope it's like 1946 and '67 (which were seven-game classics), and not like 2004 (which was a four-game sweep). And also, it looks like Roush is trying to jump-start his Nationwide team because it's been reported that Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will be in the #16 NNS car at Texas. Frankly, I think this move is long overdue for Roush's NNS operation to find out what'd wrong with his cars, and how to get them up with the other front running teams in the Nationwide Series. 43. The fact that Trevor Bayne has moved up to sixth in points with a real shot at fourth and even an outside shot at third is remarkable, if for no other reason than the fact that Bayne has not seriously contended for the lead much of the season, except for the one race he won. Roush knows his cars are lacking, and he hopes that putting one of his Cup drivers in the #16 car will help the entire operation find out what's missing. And like I said, this is a long-overdue move, one I think he should have made as far back as the summer, if not before that. We know the driver's missing in the #60 car, because the one he's got in that car has proven he can't get it done, but he also needs to find out why his #6 car is just plain slow, and maybe putting Stenhouse in one of the other cars might help him find the answer as to why his NNS cars are slow. 48. Almost none of this was a surprise since pretty much all the changes were talked about on racer.com for a couple months. Ending the schedule on Labor Day - few other racing series do this worldwide, but I think it is probably a smart move. In Europe, Formula One is second to soccer in prestige so racing in general is held in higher regard there than here. In the US, racing has a much lower profile and is hardly second to football, regardless of how NASCAR wants to argue it has 75,000,000 hardcore fans. Dream on. NASCAR clearly plays second-fiddle to football, baseball, and basketball (and is roughly equivalent to golf in possibility with soccer about to surpass it), yet STILL manages to drown out all other forms of racing thanks to its skillful marketing to the point that a sizable percentage of the American population is unaware another form of racing exists. Again, in Europe, while F1 is the top dog, I believe racing fans are slightly more generalized and familiar with the entire racing picture. I think a lot of European F1 fans might actually have MORE respect for NASCAR than they used to after Villeneuve, Montoya, and Piquet's failures (I see a lot less bashing of NASCAR on some F1 sites than I even do here!) The point is that IndyCar is basically unknown here, regardless of how much better it is now relative to NASCAR and how much bigger it might have been 30 years ago (I admit that some of the CART fans were wrong - NASCAR DEFINITELY passed CART in the ratings before the split, except for the Indy 500. On the flip side, the IRL's approach was very wrong-headed as well since sprint and midget car drivers were simply not as good as the road racers - CART or IRL - even on ovals, with the exception of Tony Stewart, who proved to be a generally transcendent talent...I'm pretty sure Stewart and Billy Boat were the only grassroots American drivers to even WIN in the IRL - the rest were all career road racers like those who would be found in CART). With NASCAR singlehandedly controlling the racing press, but with racing in general getting a lot less press than it once did 20 years ago (a show like RPM2Night would never make it today), I think IndyCar HAS to go out of its way to not compete with the NFL (which I don't even care about) and not to compete with NASCAR. When I initially thought about this, I thought it was dumb, but I think you have to do this. I mean IndyCar got the American champion it wanted last year and Ryan Hunter-Reay could not make it to SportsCenter. IndyCar never makes it unless somebody flips the officials off or gets hurt in a crash... It's much better to try and improve ratings by making sure you have weaker competition. Losing the Baltimore and Sao Paulo street courses - Those street courses actually and unexpectedly had two of the most entertaining races of the season, but street courses all seem to be fly-by-night operations that attract big crowds yet never break even nor last long. Increasing reliability on street courses (and more and more of them) is not a great way to ensure a future, even though the street racing was mostly entertaining this year. I understand the reasoning. Ovals and road courses cannot afford IndyCar's sanctioning fees, and IndyCar cannot afford to lower its sanctioning fees because otherwise teams would go out of business. It's a sticky situation, and it results in IndyCar settling for rather lousy street courses in disrepair (especially because those seem to be the only races that attract big title sponsorships as well), which tend to receive big government tourism dollars, but I'm not sure the cities ever really profit (except maybe the three that have endured - Long Beach, Toronto, and St. Petersburg, which I would not dream of removing. The rest - I ultimately don't care if they remain on the schedule even though I liked the Sao Paulo and Baltimore races this year.) The IMS road course - Meh. Big meh. I don't think it's going to solve anything, but I think people thinking it's going to hurt the Indy 500 is also wrong. Nobody is going to give up their ticket to the 500 to go to this event, especially because this road course is considered lousy in general while the last three Indy 500s have been overwhelmingly the most exciting races since the split. It's just going to get a fairly small crowd of locals (50,000 maybe) and will struggle to break even. I don't think it's going to do anything to seriously revive interest in the earlier weeks in May. I think those days have passed, but I don't think it's going to kill the 500 either. If the DW12 chassis can have entertaining races on street courses now, I bet they could even have an entertaining race on this awful infield road course. Of course, I'd rather they return to Road America or Watkins Glen or Laguna Seca, but those tracks couldn't afford the sanctioning fees... I think one of IndyCar's biggest mistakes was NOT buying up racetracks the way NASCAR did. All they have is IMS which made it impossible for them to leverage things the way NASCAR did. Things might be much better now if Tony George had decided to build a bunch of other ovals around the country and create a track-holding empire for CART to race on instead of forming the IRL, and it would have broken up the SMI/Bruton Smith monopoly quite well as well. It's really a big meh, but even the boring tracks had entertaining races this year so I still have hope for it, and talent seems to be finally recognized, with the Wilsons and Hinchcliffes and Bourdaises and Kanaans having steady (and usually better) rides announced earlier than in previous years. There's a lot of "the sky is falling" mentality with IndyCar losing IZOD, GoDaddy, and HP due to falling ratings, but Hinchcliffe's team DID get a replacement for GoDaddy (United Fiber & Data, co-owned by members of the band Live), and there are LOTS of hot new talents coming up if they can get rides (Carlos Munoz will, I hope Sage Karam will be able to buy one with his award for winning the Indy Lights title, and Matthew Brabham looks like the best prospect since the ages of Dixon and Wheldon...) 51. Yes, I am and I call myself a real race fan, thank you. It is Talladega. Last time these drivers were there David Ragan won you might remember with Gilliland 2nd. There has been 1 other race this season where Ragan was competitive (Bristol summer), so I think Cassill has a chance. Also, he has a teammate (sort of) in the #33 to draft with, good for a racing team struggling to find sponsors and stay alive. Shame on me for being happy to see them or Joe Nemecheck in the field instead of a team, who just raced with 3 IndyCars yesterday, fielding a 3rd cup car with big bucks behind it. In Nascar 2005 Chase for the Cup, Talladega has always been my worst track, usually losing two to five spots every laps. Yet last night I was able to pull three-wide for the finish, winning by 44 thousandths of a second. ZOMG! And there weren't any large crashes. I'm satisfied... But that is beside the point! Race time is coming closer folks. After watching events from the truck race last night, the events in the IZOD Champsionship battle *DANG it! Why not Helio?*, and doing some hardcore thinking, I'm going to post my 'prediction' for this race now. Due to the entire 'Starting line-up by fastest' we'll see the people in front of the field with good post-tandem drafting experience and 'reliable' equipment stay up front most of the race. There will be an interesting number of lead changes, yes, but mostly between guys on the 'big teams' that started in the top 15-20. Burton, Dale Jr, Johnson, Kenseth, Newman, Logano, Gordon, and Bowyer. Johnson and/or Kenseth will lead at least half of this race. There will be some 'debris' cautions early for honest-to-god debris, and a 7-10 car crash just between laps 85 and 100. Most 'championship' contenders will avoid, save for Kyle Busch. He'll get caught up, and will realistically be out of Championship chances. The race will become decently conservative from then until about 30 to go. Then the entire field will begin mixing it up, and with about 4 laps to go, heading to the start-finish line, the true 'big one' will erupt just behind the leaders, collecting or damaging just under 20 cars. This is where I'm not sure what will happen. While I'm positive that Johnson and Kenseth won't be caught up in the big one together, they won't avoid it together. One will get caught up, one will not. If it's Kenseth who avoids it, he'll choke again like he did in the Aaron's 499 and let Ku. Busch win. If Johnson avoids it, he'll win the race. He has some idea as to how to seal the deal at 'Dega. Something in gut is also nagging me that Jeff Gordon will do something really noteworthy, or have something really noteworthy happen to him. Don't know what... Now, watch as ALL of this prediction is proven wrong in the upcoming race! 68. cjs3872 posted: 10.20.2013 - 12:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @59, it all depends what you're goal for the race is. If you're trying to win the race, then perhaps hanging out at the back is not the right strategy for the reasons you gave, because it's harder to get runs and pass with the 2013 rule package. But if you're one of the point leaders, particularly one of the top two with nearly a full race advantage on third, you're not really trying to win this race, but survive it, and if you want a better chance at finishing the race, then the best tactic would be to hang out at the back until the final 20-25 laps, and then make your move. That's why I said that if I was the crew chief for either Kenseth or Johnson, I would have them hang out in the back until about lap 170, and then have them make their move then, because that would give them a better chance at finishing, and the object for one of those two is not to win the race, but rather to finish the race. Hanging out at the back reduces your chances at winning, but I think it greatly increases your chances of finishing the race, and those two need to concentrate on finishing the race, rather than trying to win it. 69. I mostly agree with this. (Sorry DSFF - I still like you.) I have long viewed the 2000s-style plate racing as very artificial, and this seemed a lot closer to the '90s-style plate racing that wouldn't fill highlight rolls but was pretty solid throughout and seemed to reward talent more rather than being a completely raw crapshoot. Unfortunately for me, most of the plate races for the last decade have made me completely numb to ANY kind of plate racing so I was unable to completely focus on it, but what I watched seemed better than usual. I'm not let down by the single-file finish (MOST races end that way, and I think some fans have set too high a standard based on 2000s plate races, which I viewed as much crappier than the '90s version). I was probably setting too high a standard because of last night's IndyCar race, which was compelling like an old-school slingshot Daytona/Talladega race, much like Indy, albeit with too much attrition (I'll admit that, and I'm happy that there was so little attrition in today's Cup race). My main disappointment is that they STILL managed to wreck despite being single-file, so I don't know what the point of the processional driving ultimately was. 397. murb posted: 10.20.2013 - 5:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) To me, the finish of this race was ruined because those morons on the inside line wouldn't quit racing each other with like 7 to go. Anyway glad to see that there is no plate racing for several months, while most of today's race was pretty decent, especially the Kenseth vs Johnson lead the most laps debacle which made the races centre portion much more watchable then usual the simple fact is that unless the cars and tracks perform major changes to improve safety, any RP package that puts up high speeds and large closing rates with high drag and powerful RP engines will prove too dangerous, and the opposite will look boring in comparison. The ending was pretty disappointing, nobody made a serious effort until it was too late. Also worth noting that the top 5 in points pretty much finished the race inversely of their respective points positions, tightening the gap between 1st and 5th even if Johnson took the lead. The GWC ruined the finish, but the feel good winner and the awesome racing for pretty much the entire rest of the race made up for it, just like this race. And as for the "they shouldn't have thrown the caution for Dillon's wreck" argument, while I do wish they wouldn't have thrown it, I do understand why they did. That was a pretty scary looking wreck, so it was probably just like an instinct thing for them to throw the yellow for a wreck like that. 420. cjs3872 posted: 10.20.2013 - 5:49 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I had the feeling that McMurray was in control in the closing laps, and might have won anyway, because while Dale, Jr. may have been in the best position, the fact that he had virtually no experience behind him really hurt his chances. If it had been someone Dale, Jr. knew more about and had more experience racing with, he might have had a better chance, but I think McMurray had Dale, Jr. beat anyway, not because he had a better car or was in better position, because he wasn't, but because the guys in third and fourth did not know what to do, and so they couldn't help Dale, Jr. as much as a more experienced driver might have. And as for why guys like Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon fell back the way they did, it was simple. The inside line was much slower than the outside line was late in the race, which was also why everyone else, even from fifth through tenth, was petrified to make any moves, because if they tried, they would have gone straight to the back. Jamie McMurray even said in his victory lane interview that he would rather have gotten hung out on the outside line than on the inside line because he knew how much faster the outside line was. and when one line is so much faster than the other, especially if it's the high line, nobody's going to get out of line because they know that, even though they might not be able to win the race, 10th place is a lot better than 25th, and so they protected their positions, which was the right thing for them to do. But with Jimmie Johnson having reversed position with Matt Kenseth (going from 4 points behind to 4 ahead), and with Martinsville coming up next, unless the unexpected happens, the championship might have been decided today, because I expect Jimmie to gain at least 8-10 points on Matt next week, if not more. And I understand why Austin Dillon thinks he might have been turned by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., especially considering how wild Stenhouse is, as he nearly got into it with several drivers today (one spotter was even saying to watch the 17 and 21 cars, and I don't think it was because of the driver of the 21 car), but Dillon just flat lost the air, which is what caused his car to spin, and when he sees the replay, he see that for himself. But I guarantee one thing. That's the last we'll see of the #14 car anywhere near the front until Tony returns next year. Watching the middle stages of the race, when Jimmie was racing Stenhouse for the lead, his heart must have been in his throat, because Stenhouse is so wild and unpredictable that anything could have happened. 421. It wasn't everybody that was racing conservatively. It was really about 2nd place to about 14th. Keselowski, Harvick, Gordon, Johnson, Kenseth, and a couple others all had the opportunity to make something happen with that inside line, but instead of working together they were too focused on racing each other. I agree that those guys behind McMurray shouldn't have waited until the last lap, but I would put most of the blame on the lame finish to those drivers that were racing dumb, not the other guys for waiting until the last lap (and at least Stenhouse and Dillon were making a move, unlike Biffle and some of the others we've seen that won't even make a move on the last lap). 424. People like Kenseth and Gordon needed to make up ground in this race, maintaining is no good. Johnson and Kenseth are at least 20 points ahead of everyone else. While it is possible for 1 of them to have a bad race it is unlikely that both will drop enough points for the others to catch up. Kyle has got to be thinking about Kansas, he could score top 5 finishes all the way to Homestead and probably won't win the championship. Kenseth really needs to beat Johnson next week, he has not done that since Loudon. It should be a shootout between Kenseth and Johnson next week with possibly Gordon due one. Kenseth has a top 3 car in Martinsville in the spring. If Johnson wins and leads the most laps, Kenseth must finish no worse than third. The 48 won't drop the ball like last year, you will have to outrun them and to do that for 3 straight will be very difficult. The drivers don't care. Gone are the days where second was the first loser. Pride, passion, guts, and desire have officially retired from NASCAR. And if the drivers and the suits in Daytona Beach don't care, then why should we? I saw somebody post one of the typical "then quit watching" rebuttals. News flash: most have. Crowds are getting more sparse by the week. It's not so easy for me. Watching NASCAR on weekends has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It is like a long time once great romantic relationship where the fire is gone. It's not so easy just to say "I'm done". You keep hoping that spark will come back, but realize it never will and you will have to have a truly life altering break up. I guess it is an issue across most sports. Ironically, what came to my mind watching thia finish was that video of Rob Gronkowski dancing and having a great time at that club HOURS AFTER LOSING THE SUPER BOWL! Winning just doesn't mean what it once did to these guys. And Gronk made his much anticipated return to The Pats this week. My point was that although he led 96 laps and was fast for a lot of the race, he still finished 14th, which could be disastrous for his title chances. I am expecting Kenseth to fight for the win. It is imperative for Kenseth to minimize the points loss at Martinsville with the inevitable 48 top 5 and likely win. I think Kyle and Harvick need a top 5 with trouble for Matt and Jimmie to stay in title contention. 436. cjs3872 posted: 10.20.2013 - 6:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The thing about Martinsville is that, late in the race, what line you're in on the restarts is king. Frankly, fifth is a better position to be than second on a restart, so when you're talking about drivers fading late in the race there, that's all dependent on what line they're in, which goes back to what position they're in. If they're in an odd-numbered position on a restart, then they've got he hammer, but if they're in an even-numbered position, they're pretty much toast. In fact, I remember a race earlier this year (I forget where it was) where Denny Hamlin intentionally slowed up leaving the pits trying to lose a position just to get a preferred position on the ensuing restart, and it would have worked had another car not got caught speeding. If you're on the outside line on successive restarts there, you're going to drop like a rock, regardless of how good your car is. So we may see drivers try to lose positions leaving the pits next week just to get a better position on the restart. And also, Carl Edwards mentioned that guys like Harvick, Johnson, Gordon, and himself tried to get a line formed on the inside late in the race, but it just couldn't go anywhere because the outside was that much faster. But I think McMurray pretty much had everyone handled because Dale, Jr. had virtually no experience at all behind him. If Dale, Jr. had someone like Harvick, Gordon, Johnson, or someone else in third place with experience, McMurray would have been in trouble on that final lap had there been no crash, but Dale, Jr. couldn't make that pass by himself, and he was essentially all alone with no trustworthy driver behind him. So I think McMurray would probably have won the race anyway, because what was essentially setting up was Dale, Jr. having to defend second place from two rookie drivers and Paul Menard, who's not that experienced himself, which would have won the race for McMurray anyway because they would have slowed each other down racing each other. 437. David posted: 10.20.2013 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You can't win a race in the first 175 laps, but you sure can lose one. DSFF's mini-rant about drivers caring enough to race for the win only really applies in the last several laps. The racing down to about 15 to go doesn't matter in terms of drivers racing for the lead (except for bonus points, but whatever), but they certainly do matter in the overall flow of the race. No one wants to see a "boring" race (except 83andJoe :)), but a boring race is far better than a boring finish. At least an exciting finish keeps them talking for a long time. 438. The fact that some of the best drivers in the sport tried to form an inside line to get to the front, and could go nowhere, proves that. And with no inside line, the drivers had to run up high and wait until the last lap. Having no experience at all in third and fourth place, and very little experience in fifth place, played right into the hands of the driver leading the race, because the second place man can't make a move without the third and fourth place driver going with him, and since you had two rookies in third and fourth, Dale, Jr. was essentially boxed in. He couldn't make a move until the last lap, and preferably off the last turn, because whatever move he was going to make, he had to make himself because of who was behind him. 440. Austin Dillon was facing head-on to traffic, running backwards on the backstretch just at the end of turn 2 coming onto the backstretch. Before Dillon got PWNED by Mears, I would have sworn that at least 8 cars were going to get collected there. Caution should have come out. That being said, I think on the last lap the caution should be thrown if the incident in question occurs anywhere on track on a 1 mile or less track. If it is on a track larger then a mile, caution should be thrown if the accident started anywhere between the start-finish line and turn 2, unless 3/4ths of the cars on track are past the accident, in which case it becomes unlikely that the 'crash' will create a problem when the field comes around on the cool down lap. With that being said, I think this race and the 2008 Aaron's 499 finish were good calls. The crash that happened in today's race and the other one began in-between the Start-finish line and the exit of turn 2. *Dillon was spinning just as they were exiting turn two. 10 feet later, and I also would have said that the caution shouldn't have been thrown* - Championship: Interesting that the chase feild was made a bit tighter, but everyone knows that Johnson has the championship in the bag, bar nothing INSANE happening to the 48 team. Kenseth might get a good run at Martinsville, but Johnson and Martinsville go together like Early Millinieum DEI and 'Dega. Then again, strange things have happened. 2009 Texas. - Winner: Very Happy for him. 'nuff said. - Race as a whole: STOP COMPLAINING! We had 175 laps of KILLER intense racing! The races of the late 80-Early 90's at plate tracks had finishes like this plently of times! You've been spoiled by the Tandem Drafting finishes that you all hated so much! You want all of the benefits of the Tandem, massive amounts of lead changes with close finishes, with none of the 'ugly' side effects, like a lack of plate racing or Single-car Dale Sr. Reminiscent charges while they cut through the field. *Which Johnson did pull after coming into pit lane 'to early', then picking the lead back up 7 laps after pit stops cycled through*. People, this is alot like the Indy 500, minus attrition. Yes, alot of people already said that, But this race IS leaps and bounds better then 2009's fall event, the 2008 fall event, and, dare I say, the 2007 fall event! The single-file finish was caused because, like many other 'dega races, the field all took a collective breath of air. They just took to long of a breath, and no one in the back could make a final descision if they wanted to take the inside lane or outside. Dillon would have probably made a move on his own heading into turn 3, and Jr probably would have made his own move about the same time. It was setting up to be a '83 or '84 Daytona 500 repear. Just because it didn't play out due to the ending crash should mean nothing! Then again, I forget that the majority of NASCAR fans think of Tally racing, and they want everyone running 3 wide 12 rows deep 188 laps straight, with Dale Sr/Jeff Gordon/*insert fav driver here* running ahead of the rest of the field coming to the checkers in an intense side-by-side or last lap finish. In the case of a Sr fan, they want Sr standing on the roof of his car driving the thing with his mind. You know who you are that I am talking to. If EVERY 'Dega race was 'super-intense' at the end, it would start to get boring and repetitive. To see something that didn't play out, personally, was a nice change of pace, because we can imagine what might have happened if it played out. And we can look forward to February and April, and hope that it plays out next time. You had 175 laps of intensity. They just ended up being the FIST 175 instead of tghe last! That is still a 90 plus percentage of exciting racing. Stop complaining that no one had the balls to do anything, it would have just set up for multiple crashes, which is something else everyone here b1tches about. I rest my fingers for now. 441. I loved how even in this long 500 mile race, Kasey Kahne and Danica Patrick made errors and they didn't have a chance to recover because of how fast the race pace was. (Lack of cautions.) My only real issue with NASCAR racing over the past few years have been the questionable yellow flags...but I won't ramble about that. This will be Jamie's best season since 2010. Ricky Stenhouse gets his first Top 5 in what has been a very disappointing first season for him in the Cup Series. I didn't expect him to light it up as a rookie, but I definitely expected him to have done better than just one Top 5 and three Top 10's at this point in the season considering what he showed in the Nationwide Series, and considering the equipment he drives. The guy running 7th isn't going to jump out and hope people go with him, because he needs more than a car or two to follow him to make a run. Several times during today's race, the high line was a great place to be. The closer that the cars were on each other, the more it was preferred. Before things became a little more anticlimactic past the 15 to go mark, didn't everyone notice how the middle groove went nowhere? Didn't everyone notice the low line run completely out of steam and people having to run the middle to keep up? Didn't everyone notice how the high line became the place to be even when the middle had more cars running closer together, creating a better slipstream? Jamie McMurray and countless others made big moves on the outside before the middle lane dissipated as a direct result of the middle lane not having enough steam. Then, later on, when they tried to get a low line worked in towards the back of the pack, they couldn't go ANYWHERE and ended up racing each other harder because of it for every spot. This isn't a case of people just not caring or not having the passion. This is how superspeedway racing ultimately works. What you're seeing is smart drivers avoiding moves that have no chance at working, and making moves that have at least somewhat of a chance of working. If not jumping to the low side with a handful of cars lets you keep your top 10 as opposed to screwing yourself and ending up in the back of the pack, that's what you do. You take the top 10 over 18th, even if some fan thinks that means you don't have "passion". You jump into the other lane when the other lane has SOME kind of momentum. You don't just go there when nothing is happening and hope that Casey Mears just shoves you straight to the lead with supernatural force. This is simply how it works! And for everyone who said that you simply don't wait for the last lap to make a move and that the caution was a guarantee; while you are often right, the 3 previous races on superspeedways this year saw the final lap occur without a yellow flag. They took the checkered under speed for all 3 previous superspeedway races. With everybody running mostly high at the end, there was no reason to believe that Jr HAD to jump out with 2 to have a shot at winning. Did anyone see that spin coming out of turn 2? I sure didn't until they were actually in turn 2. 480. NicoRosbergFan posted: 10.21.2013 - 4:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Allow me to hate on those of you who say KC has an easy schedule... Just as the Broncos have proved their defense can't be trusted. Part of that points per game average you brought up in regards to the Cowboys is how they got fat at the expense of Denver's defense, as everyone else's offense, including Jacksonville's, got better when they played Denver's defense. 487. kup posted: 10.21.2013 - 12:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ? =) Not Boring 2013 Cup After 32/36 races (Non-Chase) 1 Johnson 1083 +5wins 2 Harvick 1050 +3wins 3 Kenseth 1042 +7wins 4 Busch 1027 +4wins 5 Edwards 1022 +2wins 6 Earnhardt 983 7 Bowyer 976 8 Gordon 970 9 Biffle 957 +1win 10 Busch 955 11 Logano 927 +1win 12 Newman 923 +1win 13 McMurray 919 +1win 14 Kahne 892 +2wins 15 Keselowski 889 +1win 16 Menard 865 17 Truex 864 +1win 18 Almirola 819 19 Stenhouse 814 20 Burton 804 25 Ragan 604 +1win 26 Stewart 594 +1win XX Vickers None +1win After 32 races - 10 times (31%) won by drivers out of Top10 (best 25% drivers). So, to compensate for that, they start the race early. If my memory is right, back in the 90s, the fall race at Martinsville started earlier than the other races late in the season, even cutting into the ESPN NFL pre-game show, so this is nothing new. 491. If you fail a background test, the only consequence should be that you aren't legally allowed to have a gun. 2. Last I checked, the only laws that were being considered were that the background checks would become more rigorous, and maybe, just maybe, some guns would be banned from public use. Why in God's name do you need an AR15? For bragging rights? Oh well. For self-protection? A simple handgun would suffice. For using at a shooting range? Rent one at the actual range. 3. See point #2. The problem with a lot of people is that they think that by even considering these laws, the government is out to ban all guns. That's not the point. The point is that they're trying to lay down harsh restrictions so that the nutjobs can't buy the guns in the first place. That doesn't mean you can't own your Glock. It just means that it'll be a bigger pain in the ass to buy it in the first place. 4. You can't really do anything with all the existing guns, but these measures that I just talked about would prevent other nutjobs from buying guns in the future, and in the long-term, this would severely limit the amount of these mass shootings. Today (or maybe yesterday) the president made a big public speech defending ObamaCare when a pregnant lady standing behind him suddenly started swaying like she was gonna pass out. Right in the middle of speaking, as she is swaying directly behind him, Obama swings right around, grabs her arm, says something like "I've got you" as he steadies her and she quits swaying, then he makes a joke along the lines of "this is what happens when I talk too long" which would be funny of it weren't the sad truth. Kind of a serious issue of you ask me. Thirdly, why did he let her keep standing there after nearly passing out? Shouldn't he or one of his cronies have her removed and sent to receive medical attention? The chances of somebody just standing there, almost passing out, then not passing out while still jist standing there are very slim. Why take that chance? Especially with a pregnant lady who, as it turns out, also has diabetes. And why were people standing behind him in the first place? Just standing there while he conducts damage control? What purpose does that serve? And what are the chances the one to about pass out be right behind him, right in every camera shot? In my opinion, shooting and hunting are just as much a sports as football, baseball, basketball and whatever else you happen to enjoy. I think guns and NASCAR go quite well together, and I bet there a A LOT of fans out there who agree with me. If someone else can discuss football when the racing discussions get stale then why shouldn't I be allowed to discuss another sport as well? Bass Pro Shops and Gander Mountain sponsored cares this year. The NRA sponsored a race and has sponsored cars in the past. Academy Sports and Outdoors sponsored Bobby Labonte a few years ago. How many drivers are avid outdoorsmen and hunters? Wasn't there a certain 7-time champion who loved being in the woods almost as much as he loved being behind the wheel? If the movie about his life is an accurate portrayal of events, the first thing he did with his prize money for Rookie of the Year was buy himself and his best friend matching rifles to go hunting with. Second off, I know it's hard for someone who isn't a gun enthusiast to understand, but asking someone "why in God's name do you need an AR15" is a lot like asking a car enthusiasts "why in God's name do you need a 1966 Corvette". Because for a gun enthusiasts there is pleasure to be derived form owning it yourself, tearing it down, making modifications, cleaning it, and shooting it. If you just rent one from the range, you can't do all that. It's not your own. Surely, there is something that you own that wouldn't be the same if you merely rented it. Also, I know what an AR15 is and what it isn't. What is is a semiautomatic rifle (one trigger pull, one round fires), that fires .223 caliber rounds (which are the rifle version of .22 caliber pistol ammo, the weakest you can buy). It is actually better for home defense, especially for women since some handguns and shotguns will knock them flat on their butt, because an AR15 has low recoil and high capacity magazines. I know banning high capacity magazines has been discussed. My theory on this is that 1 round in the hands of a criminal is 1 too many, a finite amount of rounds in the hands of a woman defending her children may be too few. Of course, the chances of you actually having to use it in home defense are slim to none, but (despite what the media tells you), an AR15 can be used for hunting and is becoming increasingly more common during hunting season. What an AR15 isn't is an "assault rifle" or a "military weapon". Yes, it is designed to look like the M-16 used by our armed forces (which, when you think about it, means that they would be/were from 1994-2004 really being banned for the way they look), but it is quite the far cry from it. Perhaps, the most obvious difference is the fact that when you pull the trigger on the M-16, the entire magazine empties out in a matter of seconds. The M-16 is already essentially illegal. Sure a private citizen can be buy a fully automatic weapon, BUT it must be made before 1986, your application has to be approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (a process which could take 6 months to a year, if it's even approved at all), you have to pay a $200 tax stamp, and you have to pay between $10,000-$20,000 to purchase the gun itself form a Class 3 dealer (which aren't exactly located on the corner of every town in the US, so you better be prepared to pay money to travel as well). By the way, I respect you views (even though I hope you reconsider whether they are well founded), but your view on background checks baffles me, Long Shot. A person who isn't allowed to buy a gun, but tried to anyways should be allowed to walk free that very day? There are plenty of other places to buy a gun besides a licensed dealer and they aren't hard to find, so if that person wants a gun, he or she will probably have one before the end of the day if you just let them go free. 520. cjs3872 posted: 10.22.2013 - 3:49 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Or when Terry Labonte drove it in 1990, Evan, because Labonte was actually the first to drive the Skoal Classic #1 car, finishing second in his very first race with the car, the 1990 Daytona 500. Of course, McMurray matched Labonte's feat of winning the second race at Talladega twice with his win on Sunday, having already won that race in 2009. Labonte won it in 1989 and 1997. That car had been numbered 55 prior to 1990, and Phil Parsons won at Talladega with it in 1988, beating the likes of Bobby Allison and Geoff Bodine, among others. Ironically, that win, the only one of Parsons' Cup career, gave him a win at a track his brother Benny never won at in the Cup Series. 521. Trying to compare Jeff Gordon to one of the champions that preceded him. Obviously, this got some interesting comparisons, and none were to Cup drivers of older generations. The drivers mentioned were IndyCar legends Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, and 9-time NASCAR Modified champion Richie Evans. Of course, in about five years, Gordon's going to be on the other end of such comparisons. Of those, I would compare him Mario for one big reason, and it has nothing to do with on the track success, but rather because Gordon is, along with Mario, arguably auto racing's two greatest ambassadors today. They even started a racing school together a few years ago. So among those Race Hub chose, I would go with Mario. 523. Yes, although Petty did have a number of years where they ran two cars in that period. "Nevertheless, it does all but prove that we are most definitely in the least competitive era in NASCAR history." No way. While I am not very compelled to watch today's Cup racing, this is still a more competitive period than the period from about 1972-1982 was (at least in terms of the number of teams capable of winning multiple races in a season, perhaps not the number of individual drivers capable of winning the title). No, 2013 is nowhere near as deep as 1983-1996 was, but it's still deeper than some previous periods. Also, I assume it was you (the post was written as Anonymous but I'm pretty sure it was you) who argued that Scott Dixon had only won one or two races based on an on-track lead change. I looked at all his past victories to refute that. For those who are complaining about the occasional "off topic" posts, what the hell are we supposed to talk about when there is no racing or racing news happening mid-week? Racing is amazing, but sometimes you just run out of racing stuff to talk about. I think it was DSFF that said it last time someone complained. Like, are we really gonna start another damn Gordon vs Johnson debate? Seriously, we've discussed pretty much everything that's happened in racing this week. We've talked endlessly about the Talladega race, we've talked about the championship endlessly, we've talked Indy Car, we've talked a little bit about Todd Parrott's drug suspension (which there pretty much isn't much to say about other than "I'm shocked"). To me, this is the greatest racing forum on the internet, but it is also the greatest RACE FAN forum on the internet. It's actually quite impressive that we can talk in mature manners about other subjects. So why shouldn't we be proud of that? It's not like we're overdoing it. Every now and then, once a week or so (or even rarer than that), we'll naturally dive into some other topics for a little bit. We all live all over the world, a lot of people on here don't have Facebook or anything, so this is the only place we have to talk to each other. And I think I can pretty much speak for everyone in that there is a ton of mutual respect and camaraderie between everyone here, even if we disagree at times. So yeah, what Sean said. If you don't like it, either leave and go talk racing with someone else, or wait for the main topic to naturally switch back to racing (because it will). I mentioned that Jeff Gordon and Mario Andretti are probably American racing's two greatest ambassadors. That's taking nothing away from the likes of Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, and if he were alive today, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Why I say Mario and Jeff are the two greatest ambassadors for American racing is that their appeal reaches beyond the borders of their predominantly chosen form of racing, or the borders of the United States. Of course, Mario is Mario when it comes to that, and Jeff rose to that level based n two things. The first was racing in the Race of Champions, in which he helped the U.S. win the team competition in 2002, and his foray there in either 2004 or '05, he was arguably the most popular driver in Paris that year, regardless of nationality or form of racing. The second thing that catapulted his status internationally was that NASCAR/F1 crossover he did with Juan Montoya at Indy in 2003. When he showed that he could drive an F1 car, I think that gained him respect from all over the rest of the world. Another apt comparison is that of Rick Mears, the very driver Jeff looked up to in his youth. We all talk about how dominant Hendrick Motorsports is in the Cup Series now, but they were anything but when Gordon got there in 1993. Gordon was the driver that lifted that organization from contender to champion, and opened the door for guys like Jimmie Johnson (who he discovered), Kasey Kahne, Jerry Nadeau, and Brian Vickers, among others. Now Nadeau and Vickers didn't amount to much, though I think Nadeau could have. The same is true regarding Rick Mears and Penske Racing. Penske was a good team, winning Indy with Mark Donohue in 1972 and the IndyCar title with Tom Sneva in 1977, but it wasn't until Rick got there in 1978 that Penske Racing became the Penske Racing we know now. Mears' 1979 Indianapolis 500 win was what really started the Penske Racing dynasty in IndyCar racing, as Mears won their third championship in a row (Sneva won the title in 1977 and '78). But every year from 1977 (a year prior to Mears joining Penske) through 1985, except for 1980 and 1984, Penske won the title, and from 1979-'94, Penske cars won the Indianapolis 500 nine times, and finished second in 1982 (to Gordon Johncock) and 1983 (to Sneva). In fact, Penske put at least one car in the top five at Indy every year from 1977 through 1988. But just as the Hendrick Motorpsorts dynasty really started with Jeff Gordon, Penske Racing's IndyCar dynasty really began with Rick Mears, and became the model Hendrick used to build his dynasty. 533. The top 23 appear to already have sewn up spots, but it looks like there's a 5 driver race for the last 2 spots. They're currently held by Denny Hamlin and David Ragan, with Hamlin currently having 10 points on Ragan. Tony Stewart is a further 10 points behind Ragan, but he obviously won't make it into the top 25 as he won't be racing. David Gilliland is 33 points behind his teammate, and Danica Patrick is 39 behind Ragan. Mark Martin is 50 behind Ragan and is probably the last driver with any shot. In all likelihood, Hamlin and Ragan will retain those positions, but anything can happen. I think the points fund money could be a big boost for Ragan and Front Row Motorsports. While it may not mean as much to other drivers or teams, it's kind of a big deal when a team like Front Row Motorsports puts a driver in that kind of position and along with their great Talladega runs this season, this is the kind of thing that could be a big boost towards making the step up to become a mid-pack team. 543. cjs3872 posted: 10.23.2013 - 1:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But 18fan and Scott B, I doubt the #11 car will be the "lab rat" for JGR this week, because Denny Hamlin is the best chance JGR has of winning the race this weekend at Martinsville, and if Hamlin wins that race, then he would be taking points away from Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. It's also interesting that it was the fall race at Martinsville last year that really began the #11 team's downturn, because Hamlin was in serious contention for the championship last year before a series of mechanical problems in the fall Martinsville race knocked him out of contention, and they've really never been the same since then. 544. The first was in 1912, the year Fenway opened. That World Series actually went eight games since Game 2 ended in a 6-6 tie due to darkness. Back then, tie games were replayed in their entirety, instead of being resumed at the point the game was stopped at the first possible moment, and there were three tied World Series games, and the tie in Game 2 in 1912 was the second of them. After five games, the Red Sox were up 3-1, with that one tie, but the New York Giants won Games 6 and 7. With that series now tied after seven games, a coin flip determined who would host Game 8, which the Red Sox won. In the bottom of the tenth inning (nine innings were even insufficient to decide a winner then), the Giants took a one-run lead, but in the bottom of the tenth, Fred Snodgrass had his infamous drop, then later in the inning, Christy Mathewson, Chief Meyers, and Fred Merkle let a foul pop land between them, and then the batter who benefitted (Tris Speaker) hit a triple, and eventually scored the winning run. Also, the 1918 World Series, which the Red Sox won over the Chicago Cubs, was also clinched at Fenway Park. Ironically, that World Series almost never happened due to a "work or fight" order from the administration of president Woodrow Wilson due to World War I, which also ended the season at on Labor Day, with the World Series beginning on September 5, and making it the only World Series ever played entirely in the month of September. The Red Sox won it in six games, with the last game played at Fenway Park in Boston. But you are right about the 1914 Braves finishing off their sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics at Fenway Park and the 1916 Red Sox clinching at Braves Field. The 1915 World Series ended in Philadelphia, with the Red Sox taking that one, as well, in five games over the Phillies. 564. However, they were swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS, led by Manny Ramirez. As a Dodger fan that was an amazing summer and fall when Manny led the team into the playoffs, but once he got suspended the following spring, it began to feel more hollow and even my favorite moment from that time, Manny's pinch hit grand slam on the night that I went to the game because of the Manny bobblehead, has lost a lot of its luster as time has gone on. I actually stopped being a fan of the team after their back-to-back NLCS appearances because of the terrible ownership of Frank McCourt. That's what made this year's Dodger team so fun for me is that it made me a fan again. I went to Dodger Stadium for the first time in 4 years (after going seemingly all the time when I was younger) and found myself having fun watching Dodger baseball again. Watching the YouTube highlights years later, Terry was having a rare good run in that #1 Skoal car when Harry spun on the Frontstretch. With the leaders racing back to the line, Harry tried to turn around to get to the line to stay on thw lead lap, but pulled right in front of Terry, destroying both cars. An enraged Iceman stalked back to the infield and kicked the shit out of a garbage can. As for paint schemes and Jeff, there are some really cool Axalta paint schemes online designed by sim racers. They are the base black with elements of the old Rainbow scheme. I think that is the way to go. Having the rainbow up against the black makes it pop more. That is what made the black DuPont car with the neon orange flames pop out. The thing about the classic rainbow scheme that Jeff won 3 titles and 4,000 races in is the whole thing is bright. It is a rainbow up against neon blue and neon pink with a neon yellow 24 on it. So nothing really "pops", except the entire car. But to put a neon rainbow and a neon 24 against a black backdrop really pops. This is what made Davey's paint scheme from '91 onwards so memorable. I hope JGR runs the original #11 paint scheme a few times a year, not just to honor the memory of Jason Leffler, but also as a change-up to their regular black paint scheme, because that scheme they ran as an honor to Leffler was the original paint scheme for the JGR #11 car. 2. You also bring up the red Husky scheme on the #20 car. I don't know why, and I've brought it up numerous times this season, but that paint scheme reminds me of the old STP cars that Andy Granatelli and Pat Patrick used to run, especially Patrick, since he used the #20 himself with Gordon Johncock so successfully for so many years, winning the 1973 Indianapolis 500 and the 1976 USAC championship in STP red #20 cars. 3. And for the #21 paint scheme. Certainly that scheme they used at SpeedWeeks that was a tribute to the Golden Anniversary of the team's first Daytona 500 win in 1963 with Tiny Lund looked good, especially since it led so many laps in the first qualifying race, but to millions of fans, the 21 car isn't the 21 car without the red and white with the gold numbers on the side, and that paint scheme was what the Woods were carrying when they won the Daytona 500 in 2011. When they won that race, they brought back so many memories of the old days when winning the biggest races was a common occurrence for them, and without fudging on the rules. 4. As for the #31 paint scheme. I simply think that car should be decked out in the colors that Ward Burton won his two big races (the 2001 Southern 500 and the 2002 Daytona 500) with, simple gold/yellow and black should do for that car. 5. There should only be two possible paint schemes for the #43 car (which will be the #41 car this week). One is classic Petty blue, as has been run a good part of the season, and the other is that classic STP paint job that Petty ran for so any years. Regardless of the sponsor, that car should have one of those two paint schemes, and no other. Eddie Wood said it best not long after winning the 2011 Daytona 500. His car (the 21) should be red and white with gold numerals and the 43 needs to be blue with a red strip down the center. Enough said. I'm pretty neutral on most of the rest in your listing, or agree with most of the rest of them. I would, however, like to see teams go back to one dominant paint scheme, even if it's with multiple sponsors. 583. 83andJoe posted: 10.24.2013 - 5:17 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) News: NASCAR is considering changing to group qualifying at all tracks next year, including drafting qualifying at Daytona and Talladega. 584. joey2448 posted: 10.24.2013 - 5:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I've always thought one of Junior's best paint schemes was the #8 Chevy he drove to the win in the February 2003 Busch series race at Daytona...it's a red car that fades to yellow at the bottom, and it's sponsored by Oreo/Ritz. Forbes Field in Pittsburgh opened in 1909, when they beat the Tigers in the first World Series to go the limit. Shibe Park in Philadelphia opened that same year, and Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, which opened in 1902, was renovated in 1909. Then Comiskey Park in Chicago opened in 1910, followed by both Fenway Park and Navin Field, which eventually became Briggs Stadium, and then Tiger Stadium. They both opened in 1912. Ebbets Field in Brooklyn opened in 1913. Then Weeghman Park in Chicago opened in 1914, though Major League Baseball did not go there until 1916. Of course, we know what was originally called Weeghman Park as Wrigley Field. Even the Polo Grounds had to be rebuilt after it was destroyed by a fire in 1911, but it was rebuilt, and for a time, called Brush Stadium after John Brush, the owner of the Giants at that time, though nobody hardly ever called it Brush Stadium, because it was always known as the Polo Grounds. But most of the parks that were used in the pre-expansion/relocation era of MLB were built and/or opened in a 5-7 year period from 1909-'16. 587. I swear, he STILL looks out of place in that #88 Amp-Energy-Drink-Diet-Mountain-Dew-National-Guard-Hendrick-Cars-Dot-Com-Time-Warner-Cable car. I certainly didn't name him "Levi" or "Garrett" though lol. Although Bodine did drive the Bud car for a bit. As did Jaws Waltrip. And The Android. And The Vulture. Yikes, I have to rename him! How about Folgers? Tim Richmond, Benny Parsons, Kenny Schrader, and Mark, those are 4 fan faves! But I have lost The Bud At The House more than Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Kenny Schrader, and Michael Waltrip have lost The Bud At The Glen. They are the only drivers to start every "Bud At The Glen" ('86-'98) and never win. Ricky, Rusty, and Bodine also started every Bud At The Glen, but The Rooster and Rubberhead won the event twice and the Hometown Hero won in '96. Jeez, that is kinda ignominious company for Dale to be in. I swear he was a good road racer. Not a great road racer like Richard, Jeff, Rusty, Ricky, Bobby, Darrell, and Tim, but he was a Top 5 machine. Budweiser pulled their sponsorship after 1998 when it became apparent Jeff was never gonna lose another road course race in his life or any race for that matter. In 1998 Jeff was still eight years away from turning 21 and they knew it looked politically incorrect for a beer company to be sponsoring a race won by a minor over and over again (I realized I hadn't taken a potshot at Jeff in this thread yet). 598. murb posted: 10.24.2013 - 10:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I once read that Matt Kenseth had a cat named Lars because Metallica is one of his favorite bands. The fact that his middle name was also the name of the cigarette company that sponsored the Cup series for such a long time was a TOTAL coincidence. Sadly, he's no longer with us. :( Our cat's name is far less unimaginative (Jumper) than DSFF's, but what she lacks there, she more than makes up in longevity. I think she's like 22 years old. 600. Turns out it is even worse than that. The NFL Network showed a graphic that the last time the Panthers were over .500 at ANY time was when they finished the '08 season 12-4, 70 games ago, longest streak in the NFL. Ouch. Nice to end that albatross. 603. DaleSrFanForever posted: 10.24.2013 - 11:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Of course the 4 teams we beat have a combined 5 wins this year. The fact Brett came out and said he's suffering from memory loss despite being only 44 years old. I highly doubt any team now wants Brett now since they know Brett is suffering from symptoms caused playing 20 years in the NFL as a Quarterback and that means he might sue the league down the road like other retired NFL Players have been doing. Brett toke some nasty hits as Packer including one during the 1994 Thanksgiving day game against the Dallas Cowboys. Brett came back in that game despite having a concussion. Brett in the early part of his Packer Career played teams not with a good offensive line. 608. How many times have we heard him say almost verbatim what he said about coming back with the Rams then next thing you know he's back? Obviously this time it is clear he is done. His performance in 2010 with Minny showed his tank is dry. In sad news in the sports world, Bill Sharman died today (although he did live to 87). He was a guard on the first few Bill Russell Celtics championship teams when they won 11 championships in 13 seasons. Then he became the Lakers coach and, in 1972, set an NBA record that still stands with 33 straight wins and they got Jerry West his first championship in his 8th Finals appearance, one of those overdue feel good title wins when, no matter who you pull for, you say "He deserves to finally experience a championship and officially get the deserved label of champion". Much like Elway in '97, Ray Borque in hockey (can't remember the exact year) and Dale in the Daytona 500. 610. DaleSrFanForever posted: 10.25.2013 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Of course the spiritual grandfather of overdue popular championships was Walter Johnson winning the World Series in 1924. 611. 18fan posted: 10.25.2013 - 2:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) And what made the Walter Johnson story better was that he hadn't pitched well in his two starts, but then he came in in relief in Game 7 and shut out a Giants team that hit .300 as a team and had 7 Hall of Famers (although some of them shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame, but the Baseball Hall of Fame is a story for a different day). The next year, the Senators returned to the World Series and Johnson won two games but this time lost Game 7 as the Pirates became the first team in history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series. 612. cjs3872 posted: 10.25.2013 - 2:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Actually 18fan, the Pirates in 1925 were the first team to come from a 3-1 deficit to win a best-of-seven World Series, something they were to duplicate in 1979. But the Pirates were also the first team to lose a World Series after getting a 3-1 lead. That happened in the very first World Series in 1903. They won three of the first four games against the Boston Americans (now known as the Red Sox), but lost the next four in the best-of-nine series as the Americans won the first World Series 5-3. And the finales of both of the series in which Walter Johnson pitched had bizarre final games. In 1924, the same pebble by third base was hit twice, causing Giants 3B Fred Lindstrom to be victimized twice by bad hop hits, which helped the Senators win that World Series, scoring he winning run in the 12th inning of Game 7, and the final game of he 1925 World Series was played in perhaps the worst weather conditions under which a World Series game has ever been played, as it was reported that the mud was up to the players' ankles, which in turn contributed to key misplays which helped to decide that game, and the series with it, in the Pirates' favor. Incidentally, the St. Louis Cardinals, the acknowledged masters of the seven-game World Series, having won eight of their 11 championships going the distance, are to my knowledge, the only team to lose the World Series twice after having a 3-1 series lead (1968 and 1985). 613. It reminded me a lot of the 2006 fall race, there was fantastic racing from lap 1 to lap 178 and then everyone just gave up and went single file, then as soon as someone tried to make a move, a big wreck happened. This race was also ridiculously clean for a Talladega race, with only one minor incident outside of the wreck on the last lap, but it was amazing to watch. Probably one of the best Dega races that I could remember watching outside of the last 10 laps ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
