It should be great to have actual commentary the next six races. 3. Kenny posted: 06.06.2014 - 6:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (6) Jenny 20th......yay :D 4. I'm amused sometimes seeing the "TNT commercial complaints" comments, seeing as that's no different than what CBS used to do back in the mid '90s. Anyway, I'm Gary Gnu, with the Gnews. JGR's signed Kenny Habul (of all people) to drive two Busch Series road courses (Road America and Mid-Ohio) in a car sponsored by Habul's SunEnergy1 company. Sam Hornish will also drive a SunEnergy1 car at Michigan next week, and Kenseth at Atlanta. Oddly nothing was said about the car's number but I assume it's going to be the 20. 8. epzik8 posted: 06.06.2014 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I see Denny Hamlin is still good here. 9. Although he hasn't won there yet, he's finished second there at least twice that I know of, and has run up front at the tricky triangle on other occasions. But I have a feeling that whoever wins this one is going to have to go through the Penske cars and the #24 of Jeff Gordon. After all, no driver has won more races at Pocono than Gordon's six and no car owner has won there more often than Roger Penske, going back to his IndyCar days. In fact, Penske's first big oval win as a car owner was the 1971 Pocono 500 with Mark Donohue, and he's won there with the likes of Tom Sneva, Rick Mears, and Danny Sullivan in IndyCar racing, as well as Rusty Wallace, Jeremy Mayfield, Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch, and most recently, Brad Keselowski. And with Gordon up there again, it also stands to reason that Gordon may play his usual waiting game. Remember that the last time he won a full distance race at Pocono that he merely waited to use his trump card against Kurt Busch, which was shifting. Remember that was the race in which shifting was brought back to Pocono, but he waited until the last 100 miles to employ that tactic while others that tried to use it more broke their transmissions. Starting with the leaders, you know Gordon's going to be mighty difficult to beat, simply because, more than anyone among the contenders, he knows how to use shifting to his advantage there. It could be a race between Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, and the two Penske cars, though the two SHR cars of Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick will be factors. I believe the winner of this race comes from those six (Hamlin, Gordon, Logano, Keselowski, Ku. Busch, and Harvick), though Vickers could come battle with them, as well, and become this season's 11th winner. 13. Kubica Fan Ireland posted: 06.07.2014 - 11:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hi guys just wanted to pose a question that I have been thinking about these past few days. The question is a little unfair but I will go ahead with it anyway. If you could have a career in Nascar, would you rather have Jeff Gordon's career or Jimmie Johnson's. The question is a little unfair as Johnson is only about 2/3rds of a way through his career while Gordon is probably in the last 3-5 years of his. The reason I have wanted to ask this is because Gordon will statistically lead Johnson in almost every category, bar championships and maybe wins. If Johnson were to replicate the second 10 years of his career he would end up with 296 top5s and 448 top10s and over 100 wins. You would have to presume that Johnson will fade over the last 2-3 years of his career and fall short, even if the first 5 years of the second half of his career are better than the first 5 years of his career. Gordon having surpassed 300 top5s, will probably pass Bobby Allison's insane 336 top5s and will pass Mark Martin for second on the top10s list within the next year. While he may never win another championship (although he has as good a shot as anyone this year) his sheer numbers plus the possibility of a century of wins make Gordon's career more appealing to me at the moment. But if Johnson were to say score over 90 wins as well he would you go for. 21. numbah10hatah posted: 06.07.2014 - 1:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) NRF: I didn't say you won. I rather have the career of Jeff Gordon over Jimmie Johnson. While Jimmie has the more Championships, Jeff is the more well rounded driver. Jeff Gordon is the better road course driver and is the better plate driver. It also is harder to say what race tracks first come to your mind when you mention Jeff Gordon unlike Jimmie Johnson. Jeff Gordon is more like Bobby Allison that way. While it is a bit unfair to say that about Jimmie, but Jimmie already is identified as the best driver at Dover, one of the greats at Martinsville, he's the all time winner at Charlotte and is in a small selected driver of drivers with 4 Indy wins. 23. I mentioned my original post that it is a slightly unfair comparison as Gordon has 9 years on Johnson. Johnson has made 448 starts, while Gordon 440 top10s which sort of illustrates how much longer Gordon has been in the sport. I would presently chose Gordon's career because of his incredible diversity and his run of success from 95-98. Winning 4 consecutive southern 500s and 6 consecutive road races are the 2 stats that I think wow straight away. If you look at Gordon's stats by track he is incredibly consistent at almost every track with about 16 top5s and 24 top10s per track that Nascar visits twice a year. I like the comparison you made between Gordon Allison as they were both very consistent at every track they raced at, whereas Johnson is more track dependent. Johnson is more similar to DW in that he will rack 12 or 13 wins at both Martinsville and Dover, while Gordon has won the most at Martinsville 8 times and that took 20 years. The thing is though, if Johnson were to say score 5 wins for each of the next 4 seasons he would have scored 5 wins in six consecutive seasons, the first time that has happened since DW and 11 times in 12 years which would be absolutely incredible. Johnson could then realistically aim for 100 wins, and it it looks very likely he will be the first 5 time winner at the Brickyard as well as add another all star race win. AS it stands you have to pick Gordon in my opinion, especially since he won against Earnhardt,Jarrett and Martin, and has had success with multiple crew chiefs 40. Turner started NASCAR with TBS doing the races in 1982, a year after ESPN started doing NASCAR. What I meant was Turner Broadcasting has been doing NASCAR for such a long time that it was going to finish its run on TNT, since Ted Turner in 2001 wanted NASCAR there in order for the network to be recognized as the place for drama. It's holds true still to this day. Look at Kyle Busch's attitude from Dover in CUP last week. Plus we fuel that drama by loving and hating the drivers we follow. 45. Unless they are somewhat affluent super fans, it's not likely people can afford to attend both races and I feel like it puts people in a situation where they are either forced to choose to go to one or the other, which doesn't help the attendance at either track. 52. dennyfan11 posted: 06.08.2014 - 12:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @50:2013 or 2014? 53. I remember Jeff Gordon winning a race at Darlington with no water for the last 50+ miles a number of years ago, and they decided to go for it, and if it blew up, it blew up, and he won the race. This was still another case of Brad getting distracted by something and letting cause him to make a mistake. When it gets inside the last few laps, if you have debris on the grill that's causing the car to overheat, you just deal with it, don't let it distract you, and whatever happens, happens. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. had the exact same thing happen near the end of the Daytona 500, and he treated it like it was actually an advantage for him, rode it out, and won the race. But Brad let it distract him (as he usually lets little things distract him), as he tried to wipe the trash off a slower car, and he lost the race because of it. And the fact that his car made it to the finish shows he would have won the race. Brad simply panicked when he had the race in the bag because he had a small problem. I believe had the roles been reversed, Dale, Jr. would not have worried about what his water temperature was doing, gone for broke, and either won the race or the engine would have blown, but he wouldn't have worried about his temperatures at that point in the race, that's a fact. And then after the race, Brad copped out by saying that he didn't want to melt down one of Doug Yates' engines going for the win. To me, that's a bunch of malarkey. I HIGHLY doubt that is going to happen. No, it isn't over yet, but Larson only seems to be getting better and better with each race. Dillon definitely hasn't been bad this year by any means (he's done well at racking up solid finishes), but I think he's going to have to win a race to even put himself on par with Larson for ROTY. And the big problem there is that Dillon only has two more shots to win this year (Daytona and Talladega, barring a wacky fuel race somewhere else), while Larson is showing that he's capable of finishing top five and being a perennial winner on multiple types of race tracks. So no, it isn't over yet, but at this point in the season, it isn't even close in my mind, and I don't see it changing. Larson is only gonna get better, and I highly doubt that Dillon is gonna start contending for wins and stuff all of a sudden (he might make the Chase on points, but he's not gonna win unless it's either a plate race or a crazy rain/fuel fiasco). 405. We know for a fact that the Hendrick engines make more power than the ECR engines. Couple that with the fact that RCR, which runs the ECR engines, tunes their engines more conservatively to begin with, and it's only natural that RCR is going to be outrun on the bigger tracks. (Roush has the same problem with that, in regards to why they lag so far behind Penske.) Larson may also be one of those drivers that is better in the Cup cars than in the NNS cars, while Dillon may be better the other way around. I actually think that RCR is a little better than Ganassi as an overall team, but when it comes to engines, Ganassi has an obvious leg up on RCR, as does any other team that runs Hendrick engines over what RCR runs. Larson likely has more talent than Dillon, but he certainly has more under the hood than Dillon does, which is important this time of year when most of the races are run on the bigger tracks. 409. That's one place that absolutely has to be repaved, and has needed to be repaved for some time. Tracks that have little bumps here and there are tracks that have character. But tracks like Kentucky and Auto Club Speedway (because of the moguls on the backstretch) are, in my view, dangerous tracks that have to be repaved just to make them safe to race on. And to break the all-time NASCAR lap record, they would have to do a similar thing with the existing NASCAR record at Michigan that Bobby Unser did to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway record book in 1972, when he upped the qualifying record by 17.244 MPH. I don't think it's possible to break the record (nearly 9 MPH) by that much in one trip. And speaking of restrictor plates at M.I.S., that's where the first-ever race with restrictor plates was run, in August of 1970, a race won by Charlie Glotzbach. And by the way, the restrictor plates were used at the behest of the drivers, who knew the speeds were too fast, especially for existing tire technology at that time. And going back to today's race, much as was the case when Jeff Gordon won last year at Martinsville, eights were wild for Dale, Jr. today. In that case (last fall at Martinsville), it was Jeff Gordon's eighth win at Martinsville and the 88th of his career. In today's case, with Dale, Jr.'s win today, he started eighth in car #88. 431. Amid his car and engine starting to cook and overheat, Brad Keselowski still finishes second. This is Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s second win of the year and first at Pocono and he gets his 21st win, putting him in a four way tie with Jeff Burton, Bobby Labonte, Good Ol' BP, and Jack Smith. Junior's next target is Terry Labonte at 22 and Carl Edwards at 22(but Edwards is still active) then Ricky Rudd at 23 and is three away fron tying Joe Weatherly. The road courses are a given, and I think Montoya might win for Penske at one of them, but I think it's a bit odd that Penske's putting Montoya in his #12 car at Michigan, given the potential dangers because of the extreme speed. But assuming Montoya qualifies, which will happen unless there's a complete rainout of qualifying, Montoya will join Mark Donohue (in 1972), Gary Bettenhausen (in 1974), and Bobby Allison (in 1975) as just the fourth driver ever to race at Indy in the 500 and on a speedway for Roger in the same year. But if Penske's up to his usual standards, Montoya will have a really good car, because that's the only way Penske operates. But putting Montoya in the #12 car at Michigan is a surprise to me, but could it be a case of Penske experimenting with the idea of running a third car within two years, which he says he has no immediate intention to do? 459. Eric posted: 06.09.2014 - 7:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs3872, You shouldn't be so sure the 12 car will be a really good car for Michigan For Montoya because Ryan Blaney did a cup race in the 12 for Penske at Kansas earlier this season and finished 27th being 4 laps down after starting 21st. You could argue though that Ryan is raw as a driver and I do agree that, but Jeremy Bullins also was the crew chief for that cup race besides doing his normal duties of being a great chief on the 22 Nationwide car. I know Bullins worked for RCR on the 29 car of Kevin Harvick though the 2011 season as an engineer, but Kansas was his first cup experience since 2011. My point is Penske might be using the 12 car in cup for gaining people experience, and for R&D at the same time based on Ryan Blaney's finish. That means the car isn't going to be as good as the 2 and the 22 cars are in as a result for Montoya if Penske is only using the 12 for gaining people experience and for R&D purposes. 461. Eric posted: 06.09.2014 - 7:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The other thing is I don't think Roger is preparing to do a 3rd full time cup car within 2 years unlike CJS3872 said, but 2017. While Ryan Blaney is doing 15 Nationwide races this year besides doing some last year including a win, Roger may want Ryan to develop more as a driver. I think Ryan is too raw for doing a full time cup schedule. Roger did use Sam Hornish for a 3rd cup team for part time cup in 2012 and 1 cup race for 2013. That means Roger has a history having a 3rd cup team recently and means the 4 12 car cup starts in 2014 isn't for experimenting with having a 3 card team. It wouldn't make any sense with Roger experimenting with having a 3rd team since he does field a 3rd cup car time to time since 2012. I know Montoya actually wanted to race a cup car at Indy this year for sure and Roger wants to give Ryan Blaney cup experience although I question Roger having Ryan Blaney race at Talladega during the chase in a cup car. 462. cjs3872 posted: 06.09.2014 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The #12 car may not be as good as the 2 and 22 cars are, Eric, but my point was that they're going to give the #12 team every chance to do as good as they're capable of doing. And I did say that Penske has no immediate intention of restarting his third team full-time. In fact, I don't expect it for at least another two years, if not longer than that, by which time Penske might have even handed the reigns of his organization to his sons (Roger is 77 years old now). And I'm not even sure that Ryan Blaney will be the driver of that third car, when and if that team is restarted. After all, I think there's a chance that Ryan Blaney might depart before then. And Rusty (#459), I thought Montoya was going to run at least one of the road courses, but if what you say is true about him not running the road courses, then running Juan at Michigan makes even less sense than even I thought it did. 463. murb posted: 06.09.2014 - 8:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah, I think Eric is right. Watto and I were just miffed about why all the drivers and teams in the top 30 weren't listed, instead of just the drivers on the major teams. 482. jabber1990 posted: 06.11.2014 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) now Gene Haas is looking at possibly bringing Danica over to his F1 team, she's the only one who fits the dimensions needed to be a driver (weight, mostly) and she has Open-wheel experience I will decline comment, nothing I can say that hasn't already been said 483. You need to include every team for as far down the points standings as you want to go. That means that if you go down through 30th, which is important this year since it's the Chase cutoff for anyone that wins, you need to include every team and driver, regardless of whether it's a small one-car team, or part of a big team. The same is true if you go down to 35th, or stop at, say, 25th. For instance, if you go down to 30th, you'll have to include the 13, 47, and 78 teams, as well as the 51 and 7 teams, which are 29th and 30th in the current points standings. However, I do not knowhow they would measure up using the Latford system. The lowest driver in the current points that's part of a big team is Danica, who's 28th, and Kurt Busch, one of her SHR teammates, is just one spot ahead of her in 27th. However, neither is the biggest disappointment among the drivers for the bigger teams. That distinction belongs to Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who's 26th with a seasoned team that was a championship contender just two years ago. It's obvious that Stenhouse has regressed, but even I didn't know how bad it's gotten, and if she falls behind Danica in the points, and even finishes behind Danica, I will not be surprised one bit, because there's no progress at all being shown there. In fact, the #17 team seems to be getting worse with each passing race. Even some of the small one-car teams are running better than the #17 car is these days. 485. murb posted: 06.11.2014 - 5:51 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "now Gene Haas is looking at possibly bringing Danica over to his F1 team" If that's true, then Gene Haas is stupider than I thought he was. Even if she did decide to leave Nascar (which she won't, because it's the place where her "brand" thrives the most), she would be downright awful in an F1 car. She was mediocre at best on IndyCar road courses when she had Andretti's good equipment, so I can't imagine how bad she would be in Gene Haas' backmarker F1 equipment (on some of the toughest road courses in the WORLD, no less). Haas should just be glad that Tony Stewart and Rick Hendrick decided to team up and make his Cup organization worth a damn. I have no idea why he's trying to push his luck with this F1 team. No matter who they get as drivers, they're probably gonna be the slowest team on the F1 grid. It seems like a giant waste of time and money on his part. 486. Race marshal Frederick Jansen van Vuuren was running across the track to tend to Renzo Zorzi's burning car when Pryce hit him at full speed, killing him instantly. Jansen van Vuuren's fire extinguisher struck Pryce's helmet, causing his chin strap to nearly decapitate him. He was most likely dead before his car stopped rolling. There's footage of the accident on YouTube, but be warned, it is NOT for the faint of heart. It's things like this that only increase my appreciation for race car drivers. And while He gave a standard sort of "well we'd look into it" response and ever since it's been completely overblown. I've unfortunately seen the tragic footage on YouTube, and it was definitely one of the more tragic moments in auto racing history. The other night, NBCSN aired the award winning movie "1" which documents the dangers that F1 racing had during the 1950s-1970s, but I was quite surprised to see that they did not include that incident in 1977. 493. murb posted: 06.12.2014 - 12:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "And what do you guys think is causing Ricky Stenhouse's struggles in Cup? Perhaps being in the limelight all the time has been having a negative impact on him. Now I realize he chose this when he started dating her at the start of his Cup career, but I also wonder if this is a drag on him, from an attention perspective. I just don't know if he's a guy that can handle all the attention that he's getting just from constantly being with Danica, and I wonder if that's somehow affecting his performance. Certainly his aggressive style hurts him in the Cup Series, as does in seeming inability to make his car better as the race goes along, and with more pit stops in a Cup race, you have to be able to adjust your car and make it better, and he seems to be unable to do that, but I also wonder if the constant attention that being with Danica brings isn't also having an adverse affect on him. As I said, that's something he brought on himself, but if it is, I'm not sure it's something he expected to affect his performance to this degree. 496. I've actually wondered about this too. It sounds ridiculous, but his career has really gone downhill since he started dating her. Think about it. He ran pretty good in his Cup appearances in 2012 (including an 11th place finish in his debut at the Coke 600 for the Wood Brothers), and then in 2013 when he became full time (when he started dating Danica), he started running poorly. A lot of that probably is just coincidence, but I wouldn't be opposed to believing that his relationship with her could be distracting him (also, does anyone else ever notice that he mentions her in almost ALL of his interviews? - I remember on one of the rain delays this year he talked about her for pretty much his whole interview). Still though, I think a large part of his problem is just that he is too overaggressive in these Cup cars. He is probably driving them like they are NNS cars and consequently wearing all his equipment out. And also, he showed in his NNS career that he's capable of having a bad attitude on the radio, so I wonder if his unwillingness to listen is part of it too. As for Jason Leffler, I cannot believe it's already been one year. RIP. 499. Yes, dating Danica can be considered a distraction, especially since Ricky seems to be buying into the hype that comes with it. But I think what causes most of it is his approach. There have been drivers that struggled similarly to what Ricky is doing, but they got it turned around because they had the right approach and were able to figure out what they needed to do. 501. cjs3872 posted: 06.12.2014 - 6:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And that unwillingness to listen may part of Stenhouse's communication problems, which in turn is why he never seems to be able to get his car better as the race goes along, @498 & 500. Maybe there's a reason why Roush didn't pair him up with Jimmy Fennig. Maybe he knew they'd never get along with each other. But I hope a part of Stenhouse's problem isn't him running too hard, which I don't think it is. After all, it would be really bad if he's running so hard for 25th each week. If anything, I think Stenhouse has been on the conservative side in his Cup career, which explains his lack of wrecks and his almost spotless record of finishing virtually every race. He may not have the car to be as aggressive as he wants to be, but I think his problem in the Cup Series may not be the fact that he's too aggressive, but possibly because he's not been aggressive enough. Let's hope that's the case with him, because like Roush says, there's a lot of potential with Stenhouse, and he may want Ricky to be more aggressive than he has been so far in his Cup appearances. But I think if Trevor Bayne starts outperforming Stenhouse next year, especially if he gets Jimmy Fennig as a crew chief, then that may speak volumes about where both are, in terms of their potential in the Cup Series But I do think the distraction that being with Danica all the time figures to bring can't be helping him either because of the distraction she seems to be for everyone around her, which I won't go into detail about in this post, but I do think Danica's having a negative effect on him. That's not the biggest thing affecting his performance (slow cars, lack of communication, and the inability to adjust a car as a race goes on are bigger factors), but I do think that's a part of it. 502. I've seen that accident on Youtube before. The details of that accident are just gut-wrenching to read about... The most grisly accident of all time, though...Easily has to be the Le Mans accident of 1955. The video footage of the axle from Pierre Levegh's car tearing right through the crowd after his Mercedes crashed and exploded...it's just...unreal. That is TRULY the stuff that nightmares are made of... I have to agree with what others have said, race car drivers definitely do deserve respect. I especially have to admire those who raced in past eras, when safety was FAR worse than it is today. It had to take a lot of courage to race back then since the drivers were very well aware that every race could easily be their last...Though safety has greatly improved over the years (at least, in major racing series), the risk will always be there... Everybody on his team is going to have an opinion about that relationship which on some level can affect their performance, no matter how hard they try to be professional and focused on the business of racing. Brian Scott will tag along as long as that arrangement works for both parties, but if it starts to look like he'd get more bang for the buck elsewhere, he'll move on. Scott's career path could look like Paul Menard's, changing organizations a few times before settling in someplace where he finds some measure of success. 508. joey2448 posted: 06.13.2014 - 3:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whoa whoa whoa!
