After all, three of them are in the Chase and the other one's pretty much been out to lunch all year, and since there are no road courses in the Chase, there's no reason for HMS to put any kind of emphasis on this race. On top of that, Jimmie's just above average on the road courses, and Dale, Jr. is below average on the road courses. Of the four Hendrick drivers, only Jeff Gordon's real good on the road courses, and even he's not nearly as good as he once was, especially since the advent of the Chase in 2004. Put all that together and you have the most dominant team in the sport struggling on the road course this weekend. If they had to put more emphasis on doing better on the road courses, you'd see both Jeff and Jimmie do better, but because they don't have to in order to contend for the championship, they're simply used as "throw-away races", races where they put a low amount of emphasis on, and try to get as good a finish as they can out of it. This is a big reason why I've always stated that the Chase devalues the championship, and this year's version devalues it even more, because you used to have to be at your best everywhere, but now you only have to be at your best at a certain number of tracks, a number that's decreased even more this year. We know that Jimmie can do better on the road courses, and Jeff's record speaks for itself, but because they don't have to put any emphasis on the road course events, they simply go there with less than their best effort and see what kind of results they can get. Dale, Jr. is never going to do that well, no matter what the circumstances, so it really doesn't matter what kind of emphasis that the #88 team puts on the road course events, because Dale, Jr.'s defeated before he even gets there, and Kasey's just out of it this year, for whatever reason. 17. 1995z71 posted: 06.21.2014 - 6:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David Mayhew qualified for JJ Yeley & Timmy Hill qualified for Landon Cassill. Gordon was almost unbeatable on road courses in his pomp, but he has been incredibly ordinary at Watkins Glen for over 10 years. Barring his performance in 2007 when he should have won, if you list Gordon's results at the Glen without giving his name you could guess that it is an ordinary road racer like Biffle or even someone as poor as Matt Kenseth. Hendrick has won a total of 14 or 15 road races, comfortably more than any organisation but only 3 since the chase era began. Hendrick has not won at Watkins Glen since 2001 and could easily reach 250 wins without winning at the Glen again. I would consider Gordon as much of a long shot to win at the Glen now as Kahne or Jr. Johnson has nevr contended for the win at the Glen and has never been anything more than a 5th-8th place driver. 21. And also, let's not forget that NASCAR restricts what gear ratio the teams can run even on the road courses, and because of that, they can't put a fourth gear in there worth the time to run it, so most of the teams only run the race using mostly first, second, and third gear. In fact, fourth gear for most of the teams is the overdrive gear at Sonoma. And I think you're forgetting one thing. By using only one of two potential high gears, the teams are also easier on the gearbox by not using both of them, and they also would have fourth gear available if, for some reason, they lose third gear during the race. And Zack, A.J. Allmendinger would be one of the prohibitive favorites to win this race, if not for the team he drivers for, because we all know what kind of road racer he is. But JTG-Daugherty will likely find a way to screw it up for him because they aren't a team capable of pulling through with a mistake-free race, even if Allmendinger runs a perfect one. That's why I make Carl Edwards (yes, Edwards), Kurt Busch, or Kevin Harvick the favorites to win this one. Busch already has a win in this race, Harvick is a much better road race than people think he is, and Edwards has the ultra-experienced Jimmy Fennig in his corner, and if Edwards won this one for Roush's first win on a road course in 17 years, I would not be surprised, given the deficits Roush is at do not come into play at Sonoma. The Ganassi cars look great, as well, and if McMurray wins this time out, it would, as I said last week, surprise nobody. 26. Uncle Andy posted: 06.21.2014 - 9:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Add to that for every shift into 4th gear if they did use it, you are eliminating two chances of a missed shift counting shifting up and back down. Mr X posted: 06.21.2014 - 9:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The gear rule is as follows, or at least my understanding of it is at ovals NASCAR gives the teams two choices for the ratio for the ring and pinion gearset in the rearend, at road courses the teams are given three choices. The transmission ratios in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears are completely up to the teams at all the race tracks except Pocono, where the 3rd gear ratio is set 1.13:1 if my memory serves me right. This is done to make shifting easier and more practical. The ratio in 4th, which isn't actually a gear at all, the gearbox's input and output shafts are simply linked together, is set at 1:1. This improves reliability and strength, reduces complexity, heat and friction internally in the gearbox, and reduces weight. Per NASCAR rules overdrive ratio's which are ratio's below 1:1 numerically are not allowed. Overdrive basically means the output shaft which spins the driveshaft and ultimately the rear wheels through the ring and pinion gearset is spinning faster than the input shaft which is spun by the engine through the clutch. Whatever gear ratio options NASCAR gives the teams, they will calculate based on the speeds achieved at the track, the driven wheels diameter, and the engines optimal RPM range which in this case is probably between 5000 and 10000 RPM putting it generously, to give the teams the most optimal ratios every weekend. 29. JTG is a shady organization, but I don't really recall them ever making that many mistakes and taking drivers out of races. I blame almost all of the shortcomings they had with Ambrose on Ambrose himself. There was the epic 2009 Montreal Curb Clip, the legendary 2010 Engine Cut Off at Sonoma, and then there's also the 4 or 5 other road races Ambrose could have won with them until he used up all his equipment and faded. Unless I'm forgetting something obvious (very possible - I just got back from a concert and am INSANELY tired right now), I don't really remember the team itself epicly screwing up and taking themselves out of the race. I still think Allmendinger has a great shot of winning tomorrow. And if any "surprise" winner has to win (and ultimately, get into the Chase), I hope it's him instead of Ambrose, because at least AJ has shown some flashes of brilliance this year, unlike Marcos (except for when he beat the hell out of Mears and his entire crew at Richmond - that was actually pretty impressive). 32. Sean posted: 06.22.2014 - 12:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Drissi's a Trans-Am champion, he's in his element course wise and I hope he doesn't become an obstacle." Trans-Am has not exactly had competitive depth since the early 2000s - the championship even folded briefly from 2006-2008. Most of the '80s/'90s championship contenders showed well at times in Cup (Pruett, Fellows, Kendall, Schroeder, Dallenbach, Said, etc...) Back then, Trans-Am had tremendous competitive depth (maybe not like its glory years in the late '60s, but the championship was still taken seriously) and consistently had many of the top American road racers. Nowadays, nobody would say that. Tony Ave and Tomy Drissi were considered mid-packers but are now championship contenders there because all the real championship contenders are no longer in the series, yet the Cup teams still seem to prefer Trans-Am champions over any other kind of road course ringers even though the series is no longer relevant. It frustrates me. The top drivers are in Tudor and NASCAR owns the series, but the teams aren't interested in hiring the Tudor drivers as road course ringers even though they might do a better job of matching what Fellows, Pruett, Kendall, Dallenbach, etc... did in the past than the current Trans-Am drivers. "If they had to put more emphasis on doing better on the road courses, you'd see both Jeff and Jimmie do better, but because they don't have to in order to contend for the championship, they're simply used as "throw-away races", races where they put a low amount of emphasis on, and try to get as good a finish as they can out of it." Stewart-Haas doesn't seem to be throwing it away and many people consider them just Hendrick Part II. "And Zack, A.J. Allmendinger would be one of the prohibitive favorites to win this race, if not for the team he drivers for, because we all know what kind of road racer he is." I think he's a pretty overrated road racer, quite frankly. He went winless in Champ Car in 2004-early 2006 and his teammate Justin Wilson despite being hired later was running much better. He got fired by RuSport and was picked up instantaneously by Forsythe (to ensure Champ Car still had an American driver) in an era when Newman-Haas and Forsythe were pretty much the only cars capable of winning (yet Wilson was still managing to win for RuSport, which Allmendinger couldn't do). He did win 5 races for Forsythe and did destroy Paul Tracy who went winless (but then again, Tracy was already pretty washed up by that point, and Bourdais's teammate Bruno Junqueira wasn't the same after his injury, so how much competition did Allmendinger really have? Pretty much just Bourdais, and Wilson still beat him in points despite having a worse car). Allmendinger has honestly not impressed me as a Cup driver on road courses (with his experience, I would expect way more good runs than he's actually had, and more fighting for the lead which he hasn't done much despite some good starting spots (Ambrose was able to do it in worse cars, but then again I suppose you can argue that Ambrose was a champion of V8 Supercars, which was deeper in that period than Champ Car was when Allmendinger was there, Dinger didn't win the Champ Car title, and the V8 Supercars cars are more similar to NASCAR cars anyway...) Honestly, with his experience I expect more. His return to IndyCar was horrific on the road courses (crashing on the first lap at both races at Detroit last year?!) He did win the 24 Hours of Daytona overall not in the best car, which is probably the best thing he's done but I give Justin Wilson more of the credit. Yeah, he dominated those two Nationwide races last year but he was in the #22 car which was dominating all season... I think he'll be competitive but winning seems remote and it would still seem remote even if he was in one of the top cars (he was driving for Penske last year, yet getting Dragon Racing results...) I LIKE Dinger a lot but I think he's an overrated road racer (I think he's actually an underrated oval driver though...) Not as overrated as I traditionally found Tagliani, but then Tags drove the race of his life yesterday and that was a more impressive performance than I have ever seen from Dinger. "And if any "surprise" winner has to win (and ultimately, get into the Chase), I hope it's him instead of Ambrose, because at least AJ has shown some flashes of brilliance this year, unlike Marcos." I'm hoping for Jamie first, since he seems way overdue both for a road course win and a chase appearance, but maybe you don't consider him a surprise... Not that I'd mind a Dinger win. He's certainly better than some drivers who have won, but at the same time he's not really one of the best non-winners in Cup (unlike Trickle, Ruttman, Mast, Stricklin, Skinner, Musgrave, Arrington, etc...) 50. Or Nascar could do the logical thing and simply jack up the number of points that race winners get, to the point that risking your race for the sake of a win is better points-wise. Also, in NASCAR, you can always count on cautions later in the race, so you want to pit before the caution comes out so you can take the lead when the leaders have to pit (like what just happened...) Well, that happens a lot in IndyCar too. 192. The 48 has already exploited the Chase for what it is: a driver only needing to be "great" for only 10 races to win the title. Jimmie has six "titles"; only three times has he actually put together a full 36 races to win the equivalent of one of Dale Sr's 7 titles. That's not as great as it seems. Now you are asking them to put together a package for just one, count it one, race, which not only plays into such hands, but actually encourages full bore cheating, something Chad Knaus has done habitually and incorrigibly over the last 13 years. This is NOT what NASCAR is doing. NASCAR could care less about those parts of it. What NASCAR wants is a repeat of 2011. That was the only time since the Chase came out that NASCAR had the ratings INCREASE during the Chase, and that only because of the nail-biting conclusion. NASCAR is hoping that by doing this they will get a full-bore demo derby with title being won by driver A passing driver B on the frontstretch of the last lap to win the title by 0.001 seconds. NASCAR couldn't care less it's Jimmie Johnson or David Ragan winning the title so long as that happens. Quite frankly, I hope someone cheats because NASCAR has not had the balls to demote someone from their position in a Cup race in over 50 years, although it has been done at all the other levels. 393. He is tied with Ambrose for most top 10s this decade with 7 from 8 races prior to today. David Pearson won 3 of his 4 road races in the final part of his career. Earnhardt won his road race in his 17th season. Johnson given his consistency and gradual improvement could end with 3 or 4 rr wins when he is done. You can't make final judgements on someone only half way through their career. That is Why Marty Smyth is flat out wrong to call Johnson the greatest. It is disrespectful to the other legends of the sport and does not do their great careers full justice be it Earnhardt or Waltrip or whoever to class Johnson as the greatest after 12 years. Look at how much everybody here makes fun of Jacques Villeneuve despite his great accomplishments a long time ago. Dario Franchitti, A.J. Allmendinger, and Scott Speed all DNQed for this race in their rookie seasons and they had more recent success (if you can say Speed had any success at all...) I agree Biffle isn't a good road racer, at least now. He won at Watkins Glen and I believe he won at Heartland Park Topeka after punting Ron Fellows, but it's not like the trucks have ever had that much road racing talent. The main point I was saying is that it's puzzling how some drivers fail to live up to expectations. I was comparing Biffle to Kenny Brack who was a hot F1 prospect then seemingly forgot how to drive road courses when he was in the IRL and remained a dominant oval driver but became a mediocre road racer in CART, even though he'd been an F3000 championship contender... You are way too harsh on selling short today's NASCAR talent though. Do you trash IndyCar drivers for winning road/street races when mid-packers/backmarkers pop up there on pit strategy, as they frequently do? It's not like Biffle was really up there on speed... You're likely to find a flukish driver up front in almost ANY race that has wild pit strategy swings... 423. Of that, there's no doubt. Having to fend off the master during those last ten laps, and with a car that was obviously going away (Edwards said so in his post-race interview), I believe this was undoubtedly the greatest win of Edwards' career, including his win in the 2011 All-Star Race. Ironically, I said all the way back in post #25 that Edwards was going to be one of the ones to beat today, simply because the disadvantages Roush is at (aero and horsepower) don't come into play at Sonoma. I also cited Jimmy Fennig, the dean of crew chiefs, as another reason why I believed Edwards was one to watch. The experience Fennig has of over 35 years of calling races certainly came in handy today. And ironically, Edwards, who has a history of making silly little errors, benefitted when others made the errors that took quite a bit of the pressure off him, including the one Jeff Gordon made with four or five laps left that might well have decided this one. And for those that said that Hendrick wasn't trying to win this one. I never said they weren't going to try to win this one. What I said was that they weren't going to put a lot of emphasis on the road course races, but they were going to do the best they could with what they brought, and that ended up being finishes of second, third, sixth, and seventh. The obvious strength of the Hendrick organization showed itself today, because even at less than their best, any one of their cars could have taken this one down. It's also obvious in the post-race interviews that the other drivers and even the pit road reporters are having fun at Jeff Gordon's expense, teasing him about how they grew up idolizing him and how he raced back in the "old days". Apparently, Carl Edwards is just the latest driver to have a little fun with Gordon about his age, and had they not interviewed Jamie McMurray right after that, I'm sure that Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach, Jr. (who was Gordon's teammate for about a year and a half at HMS) might have piled on. But that's what happens when you get older, and happen to be one of the most esteemed drivers in the sport's history. The other younger competitors begin to have fun at your expense. 660. The reason is that Sonoma has always been a more technical track than Watkins Glen, where speed and even aerodynamics come into play. If you remember, no less of a driver than Jeff Gordon crashed in last year's race in the at Watkins Glen as a direct result of aero-push. If anything, driver is less of a factor at Watkins Glen because of the speed and aerodynamics, and the car is more important there. If you don't have good aerodynamics and horsepower at Watkins Glen, you have no chance, but as we saw yesterday, the one organization lacking in both of those areas was the one that came out the winner, which would be Roush Racing, because the driver means more at Sonoma, and always has. At Sonoma, a driver has to use finesse, while at Watkins Glen, a driver can actually throw his car around the track, which is why drivers such as Brad Keselowski and Marcos Ambrose struggle at the slower, more technical track at Sonoma, but excel at Watkins Glen. At Sonoma, you can't just throw the car around the track because it's more about precision. At Sonoma, you have to be precise, while at Watkins Glen, the driver has more margin for error, which is why we see the wilder drivers, such as Keselowski, Ambrose, and Kyle Busch do better there. In short, I think Sonoma is the more demanding track on the driver, while Watkins Glen is more about the equipment. 691. Watkins Glenn takes more skill and daring though with its higher speeds, and the cream rises to the top more so than Sonoma." I'm no expert on road racing, but I have felt the same for a while now. They have as much in common as Talladega and Martinsville. The only reason they are compared is because they are the only two road courses on the Nascar schedule. Sonoma provides a much more diverse number of winners and always had, not withstanding the highly unusual sequence of first time winners at Sonoma. You have less drivers to beat at the Glen. Given recent history if you beat Keselowski, Kyle and Marcos Ambrose you will win the race, whereas at Sonoma you have 15 or so drivers that have a reasonable chance at winning. This number is halved at the Glen and probably only about 6 have a realistic shot at winning. Also if Edwards does move to Gibbs I would like to see the return of the orange and white car to cup 700. I've really come to love road course racing over the past few years because not only do they produce just as exciting racing as the ovals in my opinion, but also because a driver has to be more strategic when it comes to racing on road courses. They have to constantly plan their next passing move on a car ahead or they might just make a mistake. It can also be good for spectators too, believe it or not, because at some tracks (like Mid-Ohio) they can constantly move around to different viewing mounds during a race, which oval tracks for the most part do not allow. Of course an F1 race is probably pretty strict about spectator viewing, but I'm speaking more about smaller open wheel and sports car series. I think I really came to like them after I started watching the American Le Mans Series about 4-5 years ago. 702. Either that, or Mars will put M&M's with Busch and another one of their brands (Skittles or Doublemint) on Edwards's car. I think there will be a new sponsor for Kenseth and it wouldn't surprise me if some races are sponsored by Toyota and/or Joe Gibbs Racing. Another possibility could be that Interstate Batteries could fill in the gaps on the 20 car and maybe Monster will either step in for the whole season for Busch (if Mars goes to Edwards) or sponsor the races that Interstate used to sponsor (if Mars stays with Busch). All of that is what I could see happening. Could be right, could be 100% wrong. 703. cjs3872 posted: 06.23.2014 - 2:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And the reason that Keselowski, Ambrose, and Kyle Busch are always the guys to beat at Watkins Glen is that all three of them throw their cars around, and their style fits Watkins Glen far more than it does Sonoma. Also, their cars are superior to the rest of the field, and the car means far more at Watkins Glen than it does Sonoma, because at Watkins Glen, speed (horsepower) and aerodynamics come into play, which was why Jeff Gordon crashed in that race last year. Gordon's crash in that race was a direct result of aero-push, something Brad Keselowski flat-out said in an interview after the race was over. But Keselowski, Ambrose, and Kyle Busch struggle at Sonoma for the same reason they excel at Watkins Glen, and that's because you can't throw your car around at Sonoma the same way you can at Watkins Glen. Of all the elite-level drivers in the Cup Series, the only one I think that is equally good at both Sonoma and Watkins Glen is Tony Stewart. All the others are better at one or the other, even though Stewart's record shows he's better at Watkins Glen. But as I've said, Sonoma is a much more demanding track on the drivers, while Watkins Glen is a much more demanding track on the equipment, because the equipment is put through the ringer there. (Watkins Glen is also more demanding on the pit crews because of the backwards pit stops, while the pit stops at Sonoma are normal.) And by the way, before Matt Kenseth's crash yesterday, when was the last time there really been a crash of any significance at Sonoma? There seems to be at least one every year at Watkins Glen, again because of the higher strain put on the equipment at Watkins Glen. And with tires being such an issue this year, the higher speeds at Watkins Glen are also likely to lead to some significant tire problems, and likely heavy crashes at the speeds that are run on the two long straightaways there, unless something changes between now and then. And that also ties into the equipment equation as far as wear and tear goes at Watkins Glen. 704. murb posted: 06.23.2014 - 3:17 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Jesus Christ, just forget about the damn trolls. Just like you can't claim someone is simply a better oval driver because they are better at Martinsville than at Richmond. And Cjs you are mostly correct in that the current crop of drivers seem to perform much better at one road course over the other, a perfect example would be Keselowski like you said who has 3 runner up finishes at WG, BUT JUST 1 TOP10 AT Sonoma. I read an interesting article on this very subject in a fantasy preview about 1 year ago. It may have been by David Smyth but I digress. It highlighted the 10 best drivers by average driver rating(performance indicator) the 10 best drivers by average finish (results indicator) for both road courses. When you cross reference the two only 4 drivers were in the top10 in all categories for both the road courses. Marcos Ambrose, Montoya (whom you would expect) Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson. Even great road racers like Gordon at Sonoma and Stewart at Watkins Glen plus Ambrose at Watkins Glen have a massive preference for 1 of the 2 courses. This is why I say I rate Johnson as a road racer. He is almost equally good at both courses, his record statistically is almost identical. 4 top5s at each plus 15 top10s spread at 8 and 7 at each track and a driver rating of between 98 and 102 for both tracks. The only thing he is missing at the Glen is his win . The case with Edwards and both road courses in terms of average finish, driver rating and results is also very similar at both tracks, which is why I rate Edwards and Johnson in the top6 in terms of current road racers. 712. To me this means Kyle is trying to be as calm as possible, so he doesn't risk losing M&M's. Not only that, but it also confirmed M&M's wasn't resigned with Kyle officially. Also, I get what you're saying about Edwards's high price tag, but 1) the Mars sponsorship rumors are coming from somewhere and usually rumors are based in some truth and 2) long before it was stated that M&M's might move to Edwards, it was rumored that Mars might want to sponsor a second team. Again these rumors are coming from somewhere. That's why I think Edwards will have something to do with Mars whether M&M's stays with Kyle or not. Besides, of all the companies that sponsor in Sprint Cup, Mars is always the one that brags the most about how much of a return they get on their investment, so they aren't losing money (if they were, they wouldn't do it; the whole point for the sponsors is to make money) when they sponsor Kyle and Carl is a much more popular driver than Kyle so there's no reason to believe that they would lose money with Carl. 719. cjs3872 posted: 06.23.2014 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hardly consider that a crash of significance, @713. I know that Jerry Nadeau, Ken Schrader, and especially Steve Park had big crashes in the turn 1-2 area more than a decade ago, but other than the Kenseth and Busch crashes, those were the last big crashes I can remember at Sonoma in the last 20 years. And Zack, I'm not saying that those that do well at Sonoma are better road racers than those that do well at Watkins Glen, as different strengths are needed for each of those tracks. So he's had cars that were clearly the class of the field, and sometimes he's taken advantage of that, and other times, he hasn't. And also, I can't say I'm surprised at the demise of "NASCAR Now", though it did come earlier than I expected it to. With ESPN losing NASCAR at the end of the season, it's obvious that, despite what they say, they're focus on NASCAR is going to deteriorate as the season goes on. Even their annual run of classic Daytona 500s leading up to the race this year hardly got any notice, almost as if they weren't going to do it until the last minute. I wonder what ESPN losing NASCAR is going to mean to their coverage of classic races on ESPN Classic? Yeah, but I have to believe that NBCSN will only keep growing. They already seem to be on a major upswing. They have the NHL as one of their primary sports, and from what I've seen they brought in pretty big recognition with the NHL playoffs that just happened (specifically the Stanley Cup Finals, which were badass). So I have to imagine that adding Nascar (which really doesn't get the credit it deserves when it comes to being one of the six or seven most popular sports) will only be another step in the right direction for NBCSN. The races on there probably won't put up ESPN type numbers (at least at first they won't), but in the long haul I think it'll end up being an excellent move for Nascar. NBC seems like they actually want to be covering motorsports (as well as other non football/baseball/basketball sports), and I think that will make a big difference, especially when it comes to promoting races and whatnot (something BSPN has hardly done). 726. What you're ignoring there is that superior drivers are often superior drivers because of their abilities to relay setup information to their team. The reason he had dominant cars was because of his vast road racing experience. Do you seriously think RPM, which is mediocre everywhere else, would have been competitive for wins on the road courses in NASCAR without Ambrose? The top guys everywhere, in road racing especially, tend to be renowned for knowing what needs to be done to set up a car. Losing Dario Franchitti (who helped set up most of the Ganassi IndyCar teams) caused Ganassi to tank this year. Losing Ambrose would mean that they wouldn't be competitive for wins anywhere. The team was only competitive because of him, whichever way you look at it. YouTube has a much wider variety of races that are uncut (while most races on ESPN Classic are edited), and races that go far beyond NASCAR, although I know there's next to no audience for that in this country. I have not attempted to reupload the 1984 and '85 Daytona 500s for that very reason, nor do I have any intention at this time to upload any other classic Daytona 500 races, which I have the capability of doing. And the same goes for the old Southern 500 films that SpeedVision used to air on a regular basis, though a number of them are on YouTube, thanks to other users. And in regards to RPM's road race setups, they must have very good setups, considering that it was at Sonoma in 2009 that Kasey Kahne, who I think we can all agree is a below average road course racer, brought Richard Petty back to victory lane, defeating Tony Stewart, who's acknowledged as one of the best ever on road courses. So it's not like RPM had not run well on road courses before Marcos Ambrose got there. And Paul Menard, another ex-RPM driver, isn't bad on road courses, either. In fact, given the ties between RPM and Roush, it would not surprise me at all if RPM had a hand in the performance of the Roush cars, because not only did Carl Edwards win the race, but Greg Biffle also ran very well. So I think RPM had a hand in Roush's strong runs on Sunday. 728. Races start moving to FOX Sports 1,viewership drops, with ESPN ( The Most popular sporst network) and TNT gone. As the fans start being alienated,NASCAR starts getting chase complaints. They decide to introduce a new chase system, where after every race, the lowest full time driver in points gets eliminated. Fans start leaving in droves, and drivers begin joining IndyCar. With this new boost in american drivers,Indycar becomes much more popular. As NASCAR realizing that racing has got much more boring, they start making up outrageous new rules, and trying to skew towards new demographics ,they try adding new things to stay relevant, including more sponsors, fans picking who is eliminated, the least popular is eliminated each time, trying to start new diversity but having most drivers flop, and adding stunts.By 2025, some of the remaining drivers form ASCRA (The American Stock Car Racing Association). Seeing that it is a much better future for the sport, drivers, teams, fans and sponsors start leaving. NASCAR tries to add even more gimmicks, but fail. In 2034,NASCAR gets merged into ASCRA. 741. dennyfan11 posted: 06.24.2014 - 12:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) So now,I think we should submit our own of what will NASCAR be like in the future. So you can bet that NASCAR is putting feeler offers out there for teams to enter a car to fill the field." I don't think you get it. I think in the future NASCAR will be as follows... Between 40 and 50 drivers and teams will show up for a race weekend somewhere between 30 and 40 times per year. During that weekend, drivers will practice, qualify, and race a NASCAR sanctioned race car. At the end of the weekend someone will win the race either by superior diving, superior equipment, or superior pit strategy. On some weekends, drivers will get mad at each other. At the end of the season, the driver and team who performed the best within NASCAR's championship system will be awarded the championship. This process will repeat itself starting in February of the next year. This is what I think NASCAR will look like in the future. 748. But if last place pays more than the costs associated with the race, then not only will they not lose money, they'll actually come out further ahead than they would by skipping the race. And I assume last place pays more in general, otherwise starting-and-parking wouldn't be a profitable venture. I'm not saying that they make a six figure profit every weekend, but even if it's $5,000, that's still $5,000 they wouldn't have otherwise. 756. With all the Truck and Nationwide teams already at Kentucky, there are plenty of drivers and pit crews available. All that's needed is a legal Cup car that can be run through inspection, it doesn't even need to be meticulously prepped for this particular track. If nobody is willing to ship an extra car from their race shop, or assume the minimal risk of renumbering a backup, that is a bad sign in my opinion. 757. Sean: " He's [Allmendinger] certainly better than some drivers who have won, but at the same time he's not really one of the best non-winners in Cup (unlike Trickle, Ruttman, Mast, Stricklin, Skinner, Musgrave, Arrington, etc...)" While I agree with the point, I disagree on a couple of the drivers. Mainly, Stricklin and Mast. For the most part, Stricklin's career is one long list of underachievements. I'll give him a pass on '89: You can't expect much from a start-up team with a rookie driver. And it's not like Jimmy Spencer did any better the next year. But at Bobby Allison Racing (a ride he really only got due to family connections), he had his career high points run: 16th. That isn't terrible, but considering that Spencer finished 12th, and Derrike Cope was able to manage 15th, it implies that Allison's team was considerably better than the drivers he had. And that Stricklin was the weakest of the three. Admittedly, '93 was not a good year to join Junior Johnson racing, but two top tens is still pretty lousy, considering that Spencer won twice the following year (under fishy circumstances, but still, a win's a win.) Next, we have '94. Travis Carter's team was clearly one of the, if not the best winless team of the nineties. Hut got *one* top ten, and was pretty much invisible all year. Two years later, Spencer was in the top fifteen. To sum up: on four occasions he was replaced by Jimmy Spencer, and of three of them Spencer clearly outperformed him. That's not a glowing recommendation. And then, to top it off, he had an average finish of 26th with a team that had finished in the top twenty in points every year with Brett freaking Bodine at the wheel! Now we come to one of the few things to say in his defense: His '96 season with the Stavola Brothers. Yes, he finished 10 positions higher than Jeff Burton. But half of that came from making the field every race (which Burton failed to do, so he gets that much credit). In overall stats, Burton had two top tens, Hut had one. And personally, I consider that race to be one of the fishiest performances in Cup history. Neither he, nor the team had ever been a factor at Darlington before or since. And after that, he pretty much fell off the map. A lousy '97 season, and a horrendous start to the '98 season. Hilariously, he was replaced by rookie Buckshot Jones, who in his second career start, finished higher than Hut had finished in all but one of his sixty-some starts with the team. That's just sad. And about the only thing proven in the rest of his career was that he was pretty good at Michigan (which is hardly a driver's track). One top ten there with Scott Barbour, and one with the late Junie Donlavey. And yes, he was a vast improvement over Ed Berrier. That's hardly a compliment. Then came his disastrous run with Bill Davis. Kenny Wallace managed better, to say nothing of how underwhelming his results were compared to Dave Blaney. Pretty much nothing good to say about that at all. At the end of the day, all he really proves is why going from DASH to Cup is not a good idea. Much like Michael Waltrip, minus the plate wins and annoying commercials. I'm out of time, so I'll discuss Mast later. 764. Of course, everyone remembers him dominating most of the 1996 Southern 500 before his engine overheated and he had to settle for second, but let's not forget the 1993 Daytona 500. It can be argued that Stricklin's car may have been the best Ford in that race, and in the second half of the event, he was a constant presence up front, and he had a chance to win that race in the end, finishing in fourth place among four of the best ever to race in the Daytona 500, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, Geoff Bodine (the other really good running Ford that day), and a rookie named Jeff Gordon. But overall, Stricklin was not that good, which makes it somewhat ironic that two of his best days came in two of the sport's biggest events. But aside from having Jimmy Fennig as his crew chief (which was a carry-over from when they were paired with the Stavola Brothers), Bobby Allison's team was never that good. And you forget that he had Chuck Bown as his driver in 1994 before he got hurt, and that screwed up his team the rest of that season, not that 1994 was going well for that team to begin with. Let's also not forget that Allison and Jimmy Spencer had something going (they finished 12th in points together in '93, matching the number of the car Allison ran), but Spencer left because of sponsorship issues with Allison's team, something that eventually caused it to be shut down after the 1996 season. 768. Have to comment on this, because I agree on Trickle, Mast, Musgrave and Ruttman. Arrington might be a bit stretching it, as he DESERVED a couple of wins, but I wouldn't necessarily say that he was great or something. But I admit that this is a weak opinion, as I don't think I know enough to defend it. Stricklin has already been explained, so I don't have to do anything. But Skinner? Imo, Mike Wallace or Todd Bodine are both a level above Skinner. I get that his resumé looks better than most non-winners', but you have to admit that, he, unlike any other drivers mentioned, had multiple years in absolutely top tier equipment and could not pull it out. His rookie year was plain ugly, but can't blame someone who just jumped up from trucks, even if the said driver is 40. 1998, unlucky, not bad as he got unlucky with his injuries, engines, everything, but can't really see this season as a good one either. 1999 was a really nice year with driving really unlikely from him, as he did not do over-aggressive moves and did not go Buddy Baker-hard on his equipment. 2000 was a lucky year when Mike, running moderately good or mediocre all year could capitalize on others' problems. That 12th place in points is as undeserved as it gets. 2001 was laughable, messing around 25th in a car still capable of doing top 10-15 results weekly, got injured again and when he came back he wasn't really capable of doing any good. Robby Gordon got a win and a 6th and also Jeff Green got a top 10 with the car Mike suffered with all season. 2002... the car was capable of qualifying well, but somehow always got shuffled back. I won't say this is a bad season though, as MMC was really on a downward spiral. 2003 If he wasn't in the wall, he was mixing it up with Tony Raines and so. In a car which was not bad at all (the #01). Also, the driver of this car has won the following year and others got it in the top 5 that very year when Mike raced it. So, I would say he got the golden opportunity, but flunked out after 1 good year. Certainly not someone who is amongst the bests not to win. Too hard on the equipment and tried too hard to become the next Intimidator. And for his stats: If Phil Parsons finished second instead of winning that Talladega race, he would have almost exactly the same amount of good finishes as Skinner, in unarguably worse cars. Would he be considered amongst the best non-winners? I don't think so. 770. dennyfan11 posted: 06.26.2014 - 12:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I will analyse the other drivers listed. (Considering the team he had) at age 47,he OUTPERFORMED Bobby Hillin Jr! 1990:With Cale Yarborough, got 2 top 5s,4 top 10s,and finished 22nd. This was probably due to equipment, but he started on the pole at dover and led 63 laps,so he could certainly get the job done. 1991. He was fired from Yarborough, joined Ken Allen, struggled, moved to Team III Racing. He finished 6th at dover, very good considering the equipment! But,out of the drivers who drove that year,he did much worse than the best,Jimmy Hensley and Dorsey Schroder. 1992:Starts Out with RahMoc,moves to Stavola Brothers. He revitalized the struggling team, getting 3 top 5s and 9 top 10s,runnign in the top 10 in points early on before slipping to 20th. Gets Replaced By Sterling Marlin, who does inferior to him. ( Keep in mind, tricke was 51! 1993. Joins Butch Mock Motorsports. Does crap. moves to Roulo Brothers, crap team. moves to Larry Hedrick,in just 5 races,he gets more top 10s than Phil Parsons did in the prior 25! replacement at mock,Todd Bodine, does even worse, but gets better in his 2nd year. Replacement at Hedrick,Joe Nemecheck, does decent. 1994:Joins Dean Myers team,DNQs 6 times, finishes 34th,BUT,got the teams only top 10 finish. 1995:Joins Bud Moore, gets 1 top 10,finished 25th. Overall,he did worse than precursor Lake Speed, and Sucsessor Wally Dallenbach Jr. 1996:Joins Brittan Schnell, leaves after 2 races, joins Tri-Star. Does MUCH better than Loy Allen Jr. even getting a top 10! He then moves to Donlavey Racing, gets a few DNQs,but does better than precursor Mike Wallace. finishes 36th in points. 1997:does surprisingly well. Granted,he got a few DNQs and finished 31st in points, but actually finishes 5th at Rockingham and 3rd(!) at Bristol! 1998:Stays with Donlavey, finishes 29th in points, but gets great Qualifying runs.,including a 3rd at Atlanta. Afterward,he scaled back to limited schedule for the rest of his career. Bottom Line. Hard to say. He did not do as well as Allmendinger, but drove for many crappy teams almost his whole career,so it is very mixed. One was the race at Watkins Glen in 1998, when Larry McReynolds had him slow down more than he needed to, which allowed Jeff Gordon to blow by him with just a few laps left. They had more fuel left than they thought they had, and Mike could have pushed it harder, which would have allowed him to win that race. Another was the spring race in Atlanta in 2000, which belonged to him, but his engine blew with just a few laps left, setting up the Earnhardt/B. Labonte finish. But nobody was beating Mike that day, and everyone who saw that race knew it. Those were the two prime examples, but there may have been others. Some guys are destined never to win, no matter what they do, and guys like Skinner and Joe Ruttman fall into that category. And then, injuries effectively ended his career in the Cup Series in 2001, though he wouldn't actually realize it for a few years. Dale Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500 didn't help, either, because it really had an effect on Skinner, probably more than any other driver in that race, since he was Dale's teammate at the time. Remember that he parked his car at the scene of Dale's crash (he tore out a gearbox leaving the pits earlier in the day, knocking him out of contention), so he and Ken Schrader were the only two drivers to actually get a look at Dale at the crash scene. I believe the two reasons he languished back as far as he did in 2001 were his injuries and the effect that Dale's fatal crash had on him. 777. Jimmy Spencer regularly improving on him is pretty awful since Spencer might be the worst multiple winner ever. I agree that Bobby Allison generally had bad drivers in good cars. Jimmy Fennig was the crew chief there and Stricklin, Spencer, and Cope all had their highest points finishes, and Stricklin's best points finish was worse than Spencer's and Cope's. I was mainly rating Stricklin well because he improved on Jeff Burton at the Stavola Brothers, but I'm not that impressed with Burton to begin with. Skinner was able to fairly regularly fight for race wins in late 1998-2000 in an era when Earnhardt wasn't doing much better. From 1998-2000, Skinner actually led more laps than Earnhardt. So I'll agree Stricklin doesn't deserve on such a list but I do think Skinner does. I don't like the Skinner/Phil Parsons comparison because Parsons didn't really fight for any race wins besides the race he won, despite having Andy Petree, a better crew chief than any Skinner ever had (Larry Mac is overrated...) I could see a Skinner/Bobby Hillin comparison because Hillin came close to matching Allison in 1986, but his 1987 was much worse (similar to Skinner vs. Earnhardt in 1999-2000). The difference is that Skinner fought for multiple race wins while Hillin only fought for one (he just happened to get it...) I'm sure some drivers from before the modern era deserve consideration but I don't know much about them. Looking at Tommy Irwin's stats, that looks like a pretty good argument. 786. dennyfan11 posted: 06.26.2014 - 5:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Times where he was leading and bad luck. 1981 Busch 500,was leading when he cracked an oil pan. 1982 Richmod 400:was leading right before rain arrived when he crashed. 1982 southern 500:Was leadign when he had problems. 1983 Richmod 400:dominated,leadign 161 laps, but fewll 2 laps down. 1983 Budweiser 400,while leading,he blew an engine. 1983 Warner W Hodgon American 500:fighting for lead but crashed. I argue that Dale's death affect Dale Jr. and Jeff Gordon more than Mike Skinner. I have Skinner #3 on driver that were affected by Dale's 2001 Daytona 500. The fact is Dale did a lot for Jeff Gordon in racing career including giving Jeff's stepfather advice for Jeff going to NASCAR. Dale was responsible Jeff making a lot of money outside of Hendrick Motorsports. Dale took Jeff Gordon under his wing off the track in terms from a business standpoint. The other thing is would have Jeff Gordon done better in 2002 and 2003 if Dale was alive because Dale might have gave Jeff advice on Divorce. I argue Dale Jr. was affected more than Mike Skinner by Dale's death. If you are close to a parent like Dale Jr. was with his dad, it would affect him a lot. I also think Dale Jr.'s racing career would have been better than it is now if Dale Jr didn't. Both of us know that DEI was not the same after Dale's death and it very possible that Dale Jr. might have had 2 times the career cup wins if Dale Sr. was still alive at least. Remember Dale Jr. for a long time didn't have guidance off the track after his dad died and if he had that guidance, it is very possible that we look at Dale jr. differently as a driver. The other thing is Dale Jr. would haven't left for Hendrick if Dale was alive. Dale Sr. was building DEI as a powerhouse and they were on their way although I feel Dale screwed up hiring Michael Waltrip instead of Bobby Hamilton Sr. or Ricky Craven. 788. dennyfan11 posted: 06.26.2014 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "1983 Richmod 400:dominated,leadign 161 laps, but fewll 2 laps down." It should not have been that big of a surprise that Hut ran as well as he did in the '93 Daytona 500, except for the fact that no Ford really ran that well during SpeedWeeks that year. In fact, except for Hut and one lap led by Sterling Marlin (by inches) and three by Bobby Hillin, Jr., no Ford led a lap under racing conditions in the Daytona 500 that year, a shocking fact considering the top three in the championship standings the previous year were all Fords, yet only Hut and Geoff Bodine had any real chance to win that race among those in Fords, and even Hut only became a factor in the second half of that race and Bodine's car got damaged in one of the late wrecks (probably the Rusty Wallace crash) and was overheating. And dennyfan11, you do realize that saying that Dick Trickle was leading the 1992 race at Watkins Glen with nine laps remaining would have meant that he was leading on the 39th lap of a race scheduled for 90 laps, so that's hardly even worth noting. Mike Skinner had a new crew chief in 2001 since Larry left RCR for Fox. 3.) Kevin Harvick was hurt more by Dale's death because it took RCR years to recover from Dale's Death due to Richard and Dale were very close friends. Mike Skinner was likely to leave RCR after 2001 anyway since Skinner was struggling with a new crew chief even if Dale Wouldn't have died. RCR was a contender for the Cup championship going into 2001, but they weren't a contender again until 2006. Dale's death affected the driver's RCR picked before he hired Jeff Burton. RCR had a bad driver lineup doing into August of 2004. Kevin was fine, but I don't see Jeff Green being hired if Dale Sr. didn't die. Jeff Green was only hired for the 3rd team because that was supposed to be Kevin's team in 2002. Dale was to Richard Childress like Rusty Wallace to Penske. That meant Kevin Harvick had a part of career affect by RCR being behind due to Dale's death. The fact is Kevin's career at RCR from 2010 to 2013 was better than it was prior to than outside of 2006. The fact is it took Jeff Burton to turn RCR around and that meant Kevin's career might have been even better if RCR was better before 2006. 792. dennyfan11 posted: 06.26.2014 - 7:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @I realize that, and thats why i posted it! the rain was coming, and if he had held on for just a few more laps before the race ending caution and red flag,he would have won! if the race ran the full distance, that wuld not have been there. 793. cjs3872 posted: 06.26.2014 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eric, the reason I believe that Mike Skinner was affected by Dale's death more than anyone else had more to do with the fact that he was one of two drivers that actually saw Dale at the scene of his fatal crash (Ken Schrader, who was involved in the crash with Earnhardt, was the other). Jeff Gordon and Dale, Jr. were also affected by that incident, but I think they were each affected in different ways. Ever since that incident Gordon has been hesitant to take risks on the track, something that is seen by how careful he is in traffic. Dale, Jr. was affected more off the track than on the track, since he lost his father in that crash. In fact, I believe that Dale, Jr.'s sports car fire in 2004 affected him on the track more than his father's death affected him. But I do believe Dale's death adversely affected Skinner's performance, and then his second horrific crash at Texas effectively finished his Cup career. Another way it adversely affected Skinner's performance was what it did to RCR as a whole, because the cars got worse, and that has everything to do with the level of input Dale gave them, which was lost when he was lost, and which he doesn't get that much credit for. And by the way, I don't think that Ricky Craven would have done much better for DEI than Michael Waltrip ended up doing there, mainly because of his own injury history, which was an almost-exact duplicate of Skinner's. Also remember that Waltrip aligned more with the strength of that organization, which was the plate tracks, so he was likely a better fit for that team than either Craven or Hamilton would have been. The strengths of that team did not fit the strengths of either Craven or Hamilton, but it fit Waltrip's strengths perfectly. That's one reason I thought that Michael Waltrip was a perfect fit for DEI. They wanted to win the biggest races on the circuit, and Waltrip always seemed to save his best for the biggest stages, and Daytona is the biggest stage of all in NASCAR, and that's where he performed his best, no matter who he drove for. 794. cjs3872 posted: 06.26.2014 - 7:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I just don't think that a driver who's up front just before the halfway mark in a race that barely gets past halfway is that notable, @790 & @792. Eric posted: 06.27.2014 - 12:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs3872, you are ignoring how DEI was run after Dale Sr.'s death. DEI wasn't the same organization although they did well from 2001 to 2004. Key people who were in the organization that time including Dale Jr., and the Eury's have stated on the record the DEI wasn't the same after Dale's death. Theresa rarely was seen in public at the race track after Dale's death and you have to question how his death affected her in terms of running the team. A lot of key people that were hired when Dale Sr. was alive left in the 2001 - 2004 time period including management. While Dale Jr. wasn't the same driver after that fire, the organization didn't really recover after 2004 when the 55 and the 8 team did crew swaps. It is very questionable if Dale Sr. would done this. The other thing you didn't look at is While DEI was at their strongest at Plate tracks, Steve Park in 2001 before his Darlington Busch series crash showed DEI actually was good outside of plate racing that year. We all know Steve Park strength wasn't plate racing before career altering crash. Steve Park before his career altering crash, was having a very good season. Steve Park matter of fact had 4 straight top 10's at the time of his career altering crash and was top 10 in points. Steve Park had great Cars at Indy and at Bristol despite what the finish said. Steve Park had the best car at Indy, but he was victim of pit strategy on the final pit stop. Jeff Gordon and other cars took 0 or 2 tires when Steve took 4 tires. Steve Park had a great Car at Bristol, but the way pit road at was the time hurt him. Before 2002 there wasn't an essentially one long pit road and teams that qualified poorly was at a huge disadvantage. Steve Park won at Rockingham, led 164 laps at Darlington, finished 2nd at Texas Motor Speedway, and finished 2nd at Dover. Steve had 5 top 5's in just 24 races and a total of 12 top 10's that season. While Kenny Wallace only had 2 top 10's in the 1 car that season, that team was much better than that under Steve Park. The fact Kenny Wallace finished 2nd Rockingham showed how good the team was. I argue DEI in 2001 was good at some non plate tracks based on the 1 car at tracks I call true driver tracks with Steve Park like Rockingham and Darlington. Michael Waltrip underachieved that Year in the 15 car compared to what Dale Jr. and Steve Park did with their teams. 798. murb posted: 06.27.2014 - 4:46 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Agreed with Eric. DEI wasn't just a plate team. They were good everywhere from 2001-2004. And that's why I think that both Ricky Craven and Bobby Hamilton would have done ridiculously better than Michael Waltrip in the 15 car. Craven proved in the Cal Wells #32 that he was capable of winning races, so I have to believe that in DEI's upper echelon equipment he probably could have won some races at some of his stronger tracks, like Rockingham (Park won there in 2001), Dover (Dale Jr won there in 2001), maybe Richmond, and maybe Bristol. Not to mention Martinsville and Darlington, where Craven did end up winning for Wells. And Bobby Hamilton was the same way. He won races for both Petty Enterprises and Morgan-McClure when they were in the stages of free-falling. So I think he surely could have squeaked out a couple of wins in DEI equipment. Also, considering how Hamilton ran for Andy Petree at Talladega in 2001 (he won the Spring race and almost won the Fall race before the big crash happened), I believe him in a DEI car at the height of DEI's plate dominance could have produced a lot of success. So yes, I agree that Earnhardt made the wrong move hiring Michael Waltrip. He scored four plate wins (one of them only because of rain/Dale Jr's battery crapping out), but he did hardly did anything else besides that there. If we go back in a time machine and stick someone like Craven or Hamilton in that car in 2001, I think they would have absolutely had a better overall tenure there than Michael did. 799. dennyfan11 posted: 06.27.2014 - 8:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Times where he led for a lot,but had bad luck. 1995 AC-Delco 400:while leading, blew an engine. that is all.
