Wow, just look at all the big names at the top of the qualifying results. It's essentially a who's who of the top drivers in 2014. Both Penske Fords and the Hendrick cars and Hendrick-affiliated teams (Stewart-Haas). All of this year's fastest drivers are up there. 4. With the departure of Carl Edwards and concern about Roush Racing having the veteran leadership necessary to tutor young drivers like Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. the team announced in the week leading up to this race that it had rehired longtime Roush racer Mark Martin to return to the organization as a driving coach. Welcome back Mark, Martin previous raced for Roush in Cup from 1988 through 2006 with some limited involvement with the team in the lower levels in 2007. 7. Not saying it was a horrible decision, but there was a literal plethora of better options than Piquet (Jeb Burton, Johanna Long, etc.). 8. The weather starts to look pretty iffy again at 7:00 and after, but the race is only schedule for 50 laps. Last August this race ran caution free and was over in just 46 minutes and 14 seconds. If-and knowing the ARCA drivers it's a big if-everyone can keep it off the wall we could get to halfway in around 25 minutes and could have a completed race at anytime if the rain starts back up. 9. KennyWallaceFan (Truck Series Guy!) posted: 08.02.2014 - 5:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I just get the feeling that this year in the chase it is going to be all Hendrick and Penske. The Hendrick-Stewart Haas group does have two struggling teams Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne and drivers Danica Patrick and Tony Stewart. (I'm starting to believe father time is starting to catch up to Tony.) But Hendrick always has at least one car a year that is off the pace from the others, usually. (Kahne recently, Junior, T Labonte at the end, Vickers, Mears, Nemechek etc.) And Danica just isn't good enough. So what I am saying this that there is a very strong chance that the top 6 drivers in the final points will be: Jeff Gordon Jimmie Johnson Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kevin Harvick Brad Keselowski Joey Logano I just think they are way too far ahead compared to the other teams. 32. Eric posted: 08.02.2014 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) KennyWallaceFan, We don't know who much of Stewart's performance is really caused by age because of injury last year. I am going by history of drivers having major injuries in their 40's. Richard Petty wasn't the same driver after he broke his neck at Pocono in 1980. Darrell Waltrip broke his leg in 1990 at Daytona and wasn't the same driver. He suffered an injury at the 1995 Winston All star race and he usually wasn't competitive after that crash. Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s wasn't quite the same driver after his 1996 Talladega at that caused him to have a broken collarbone, sternum and a neck problem. Dale Rebounded in 2000 after neck surgery, but wasn't quite the same driver. It is possible that Stewart's injury caused him to decline faster based on the driver's I mentioned. 33. numbah10hatah posted: 08.02.2014 - 5:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DB1995: What's your username? Eric posted: 08.02.2014 - 8:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Before CJS3872 tries to correct me on Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Earnhardt Sr on their performance before and after their injuries. While Richard Petty in 1980 before he got the broken wasn't the driver he was in 1975, Richard actually was 48 points behind Dale Sr. for the points lead going into Pocono. Richard really wasn't a factor for the points championship out of the first 4 races of the 1981 season after his broken neck. Darrell was already past prime by 1990 although he had last great year in 1989. His broken leg makes you question how much of his 1991 and 1992 seasons being 8th and 9th points despite having a combined 5 wins and 15 top 10's were caused being driver/owner,declining skills, or his past injuries. I am bring this up because of Ed Hinton in the past mentioned that Darrell's injuries made him worse with each one. Dale Earnhardt Sr. in 1996 was still a great driver before his 3 major injuries although RCR made the mistake of not giving Dale one crew chief in 1996 with RCR starting to decline. Dale's already not great qualifying skills got even worse after he injuries. I argue that Dale in 1997, 1998 and 1999 was affected by injuries at some degree although RCR was off in 1997 and 1998. Dale started his comeback in 1999 with his 3 wins despite his neck injury, but you have to wonder if Dale would been better in 1999 without all the injuries Dale got at the July 1996 Talladega race. Dale was great in 2000 after his neck injury had surgery, but he didn't seem to be as he was in the 1993 and 1994 timeline based not dominating a lot. 38. The Sound posted: 08.02.2014 - 10:54 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Hello, folks. For those that remember, I am the person who pioneered the idea of an ultimate NASCAR video game simulation of sorts. Well, after a solid month-plus of solitude (from the internet, at least!), I am refreshed and encouraged. As pandering as it may sound, I feel that I have gained some maturity and thereby the ability to regulate my internet usage in a responsible manner. Only time will tell though, eh? Anyway, I plan to begin the planning process for my simulation. I am looking at beginning the actual sim itself no sooner than this coming offseason, so the timeframe remains somewhat remote, but I am prepared to solicit input in the interim. For those who may have forgotten (or those that were not present at the time), I plan to use the Nascar Racing 2003 Season video game by Papyrus to conduct a simulation, wherein the top drivers in Nascar history (as chosen by the fine fellows on this board!) compete with the attributes of their best historical season, with the goal of crowning an ultimate champion. Obviously, this endeavor will be fanciful at best, but I love the idea and I am probably going to go through with it whether or not I have an internet audience. At this time, I am asking for any folks on this board that may be interested in participating with the conduct of the sim. I possess a few somewhat ambitious ideas, and some of them I may not be able to achieve on my lonesome. If anyone on this board is interested in organizing, simming, or even painting cars for this project, by all means feel free to contact me. I assume posting personal e-mails on this board is generally frowned upon, so I will need to ascertain the best method for exchanging pertinent communication. Ideally, I would love for two or three people to come on board with me to run this thing, and if you have experience with NR2003, so much the better. To summarize a few of my current ideas: - I would like to live stream/record the races when they are simmed. Obviously, this would mean a three or four hour time commitment per race, thereby precluding the chance to crank out the sim in a condensed window of time. I possess no experience with streaming, so I would welcome all suggestions, but uploading the races onto YouTube would be one of my ambitions. - I would like to paint each driver's car with their one or two most iconic paint schemes. This idea would require definite participation from others, as I possess absolutely no experience with graphics or design in general. - I would like to enlist a larger audience for this project beyond this site. The NASCAR subreddit comes to mind, as they seem like a community that would be very welcoming for a project like this. I know some posters on here also post on Reddit, and thus I could also use some help in that area. - As for format, I am thinking each race weekend will consist of four heat races (randomly selected fields?), with the top 10 in each advancing. The last chance qualifier would then determine the final two entries in the main event. This method would require much more work, but if I had helpers, I am confident it can be achieved. - I would very much like to design an actual website, if for nothing else than compiling databases of various statistics for the simulation. If anyone actually reads everything I just posted, I will be more than grateful. Past that... Jeff Gordon really won a race? Really? I should watch less races, then, I suppose. 41. cjs3872 posted: 08.03.2014 - 1:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eric, you're dead on about most of what you say in post #37, but I think that, even though he was getting his engines from Hendrick Motorsports in 1991 and '92, the mere fact that Darrell Waltrip could win five races in his first two years as an owner/driver, which was one more than HMS itself was able to win in those two years (HMS won only four times in 1991 and '92), is nothing short of remarkable, especially when you consider the depth of the competition at the top back then. In fact, NO Chevrolet driver won more races in 1991-'92 than Darrell Waltrip did, and only an at his peak Dale Earnhardt and Ernie Irvan was even able to match that among Chevrolet drivers in those two seasons. And Waltrip did that having to take on the responsibility of a car owner for the first time since 1975. Waltrip's career went downhill for two reasons. The first was of his own doing, as he began to do his own engine program in 1993, which was the biggest mistake he ever made, and which is why he never won again after 1992. The other one, of course, was his crash at the All-Star Race while battling Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt for the lead. While everyone remembers that race for Gordon's utter dominance, people forget just how good Waltrip ran that night before his crash. Nobody was going to beat Gordon, but Waltrip could easily have finished second if it weren't for that crash, and if it weren't for that crash, I believed then, and I still believe that Waltrip's win total would be higher than 84, because he would have won once or twice that season. That crash in the 1995 All-Star Race effectively ended his career. 42. joey2448 posted: 08.03.2014 - 5:30 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) "Whatever...I'll just refer to Danican't as Princess Sparkly Pony (or PSP) from now on." I honestly wouldn't be shocked if Dover does end up losing a date in the next couple of years. The attendance is usually mediocre to average at best, and it's also a non Bruton Smith/ISC track. So I would imagine that it's a prime candidate to be losing a date in the next two or three years for those reasons (unless they decide to just keep rolling out the same exact schedule every year, which it sounds like they will be doing next year unfortunately). 305. someone posted: 08.03.2014 - 6:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why get rid of Dover or Loudon in the chase? He was hit with a speeding penalty on pit road (self-inflicted error) and was then involved in the big wreck (circumstance/bad luck), leaving him with some damage on the left front corner of the car. Yet, on the final restart with three laps to go, he hung with Junior and almost had a chance at a winning pass there at the end! If there's any team that should be thanking their stars for the last two cautions, it's the No. 4 team. Another quick note -- Ryan Newman, after finishing eighth today, is fifth in the points! He'll probably make this Chase on points and consistency alone! Kudos to that team for coming on strong in the summer. 308. What kind of algorithm you are using to convert driver stats into NR2003 ratings? I am asking because this sounds very interesting, I played management game with NR2003 few years back and I based everything on r-r.info stats." My initial thought is 36 races: 30 tracks, with 6 tracks having repeat dates. All would be chosen by popular vote, but all would also need to have been a Sprint Cup track at some point in history. We can save Road America for a fantasy date (or Coca-Cola Superspeedway, for those familiar with NR2003). In accordance with the repeat dates, the second date at each track could be a designated alternate paint scheme race for the sim. Just an idea. I utilize an outside program to edit car ratings in the game. I believe it is called NRatings. The program can be edited manually, but it also draws from an online database, which just so happens to be Racing-Reference, if I am not mistaken. I am not familiar with the underlying algorithm itself, but after tinkering with the program I have observed that the ratings do indeed reflect the driver's success in a given season. Jeff Gordon's 1998, as expected, produces excellent ratings in the program. As does Jimmie Johnson's, well, just about any Jimmie Johnson season. I plan to base the ratings on the algorithm, though I plan to research the formulas behind the ratings, as well as consult some who may know more about the actual function of the ratings in-game. "I'd love to see the whole NR2003 sim thing, though I don't have much to offer in the way of help." If you are willing to help, in however small a manner, I am certain I could think of something for you to do. Either way, I appreciate your interest! I hope to post about this sim on the NASCAR Reddit soon, but I will give members of this board every opportunity to claim support roles if at all interested before I solicit help from other sites. My idea back in the offseason was to include all the tracks in history that have hosted at least 15 Cup races (34 tracks total); that would be a good balance of past and present. You could make a poll to determine which tracks get two dates and maybe which ones are cut from the schedule. "We can save Road America for a fantasy date" Actually, Road America hosted a Cup race in 1956, the only one ever run in the rain (Tim Flock won), so it'd be a perfectly legitimate track for the schedule. Geoff Bodine won at Pocono in the Modified division back in the 1970's and always in his prime knew how to run well there like at Martinsville. There are some places on the cup schedule that Geoff had experience at before going to cup dating to his modified days. Geoff Bodine actually started how Hendrick Motorsports ran so well at Pocono. Geoff back in first 1985 race at Pocono led 156 laps. Dover was part of that original 10 and still is a decade later. If you're going to have a 10 race playoff, the races should be given to deserving tracks (and create a microcosm of the entire season IMO), not the ones that happen to fall that way by chance. 324. Also a good run for Allgaier coming home in 16th, tying his career best finish Ryan Truex gets his first top 20 and top 30 finish of his career. Seemed obvious to me at least that the winning move was to pit under the caution for the big wreck to set you up for fuel only on the last stop. Jr and crew played the strategy perfect. Logano pulled the same move and got third place out of it. Bowyer meanwhile took right side tires under the caution and left sides under green, which put him in front of all the cars who pitted under green minus Junior and resulted in a 4th place finish where he was a 9th-13th place car. Gordon, who along with Kurt Busch and Junior had the best cars, was hurt by his strategy and could only get back up to 6th place. Harvick, Biffle, and Hamlin all topped off on the one to go with hopes of saving enough to make it to the end and all did with the help of two cautions. This was a huge finish for Biffle. Took a car that ran in the teens most of the day and came away with a top 5. He now holds the final chase position on points just one ahead of Kahne and two ahead of Dillon. The big wreck all but eliminated the chances of Menard, Vickers, and Stewart of making the chase on points. Expect to see those guys and McMurray to take some interesting strategy risks in the last five races before the cutoff to get that win. 326. The ones to me that are the biggest WTFs are Gordon in 2000 (by far at the top of the list for me - he was like a 7th-10th place driver that entire year), Hamlin in 2006 (he had a great year, especially for a rookie, but absolutely not champion worthy), Kurt Busch in 2009 (how was it not Jimmie or Mark?), and Carl Edwards in 2010 (I'm assuming it's just because he won Homestead - pure bullshit, this would be like if Ryan Newman ends up winning the title this year by just skating by and winning Homestead). But the rest don't really seem THAT bad. On paper, Jr winning 2013 with no wins seems ridiculous, but if you really think about it, I'd say he was a top five driver for virtually the entire second half of the year, so it's not really THAT surprising. Another interesting year was 1981; even though DW dominated the Chase by winning 5 races- including 4 in a row at one point- Bobby Allison wins the title due to winning the finale at Riverside. Allison would have been a worthy champion based on his overall season, but he clearly was not the best driver throughout the 10 race Chase. 362. She mostly just drives around complacently. Milka Duno has a history of being a safety hazard, but it's worth noting that her IndyCar teams weren't very good either. "Wow, Gordon winning 2000? Maybe this system is a total joke." He had 9 top tens in the last ten races. He and Robbie Loomis had clearly built up chemistry by the end of the season giving them sufficient preparation to dominate again the following season. "Unbelivable! if the new chase had been around from 2004-2013,Jimmie Johnson would have ZERO (!!!!) Championships!" In general, he either needed a decent finish to clinch when he was ahead, or on the rare cases when he was behind, he didn't have the speed on the cookie-cutters as he did in his championship years to win the season finale. Not to mention that the entire Hendrick team didn't win there until Gordon's fuel-mileage win in 2012 (the only track where Hendrick has never won). Winning the finale is now pivotal, when it seldom ever was in past championship battles (especially when the champion clinched a race or two early, which was frequent). Hence, you will probably find that MOST champions will change, because generally drivers who clinched didn't do as well in the latter races after they had clinched or it was effectively over as they did in the summer months... If they'd really wanted to reward winning though, I would have preferred them to create a point structure that rewards the top positions more and (especially) the bottom positions much less rather than attaching a series of gimmicky automatic qualifications for winners to a still-shabby points system base. 368. True, but I still hate that hypothetical championship more than any other (except maybe Carl Edwards in 2010) for some reason. I guess it's just because he won two races early, and then just coasted through the Chase by finishing 7th in pretty much every race (yeah he won at Richmond too, but all that did was just lock him into the second round). All he had to do to "win" the title was just take advantage of others (like Labonte, Earnhardt, and Rusty) faltering. I just really hope we don't have this situation this year. I would much rather have a champion that at least wins multiple races like the 2002 Kurt Busch hypothetical than a 2000 Jeff Gordon (someone who just top tens them to death but doesn't really compete for wins that often) or a 2010 Carl Edwards (someone who coasts through with top tens and then wins the title by winning Homestead). If there was a way to somehow prevent weird champions like this from happening, I would actually be mostly onboard with this system, because it really has improved the regular season (I think it has, anyway), and it should bring a lot of intensity to the final races. But there's still just this huge cloud over this system that just screams "artificial" and "lame champion", so I'm still really weary of it. 372. Situations that happen that no one could have guess would have happened, actually happened. Points battles like 1992 and 2004 don't happen often but when they do it gets your attention. But then again here is what Sean said before: "Winning the finale is now pivotal, when it seldom ever was in past championship battles (especially when the champion clinched a race or two early, which was frequent)." With this current system, we could have 1992s and 2004s every year because the season finale means something. However some will argue that the season finale should a "knighting" of the champion because said driver earned it over the course of the full season, however some people don't like that. So it is a matter of POV. I really don't like the Chase (i prefer the 1st version of it) and wish it would go away but we are stuck with it. So it is what it is. 379. So either A: NASCAR scared them into not appealing or B: what they did was on purpose since it was POST-race tech inspecation that when they got caught. 403. murb posted: 08.08.2014 - 4:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I don't know if it means anything or not, but it's possible that NASCAR is finally letting full races be released to the public." I heard about that too. That's great to see. Hopefully they still won't mind people putting up old races. "So either A: NASCAR scared them into not appealing or B: what they did was on purpose since it was POST-race tech inspecation that when they got caught." They probably just realized that it would have been a massive distraction and waste of time to appeal. Grubb is coming back once the Chase starts anyway, so all they have to do until then is just tread water and officially lock themselves in. A giant appeals process and fight with Nascar just would have complicated things more for them during that time. 404. I glad both of you did it too because it served as good fact checks and showed how the championship would unfold differently in the 1-43 point system and the old 34-180 point system. Fascinating stuff, even though each year would obviously play out differently if the contenders knew that system was in place. 405. Try http://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/2cx8i6/planning_for_a_nr2003_greatest_of_all_time/ David, from your list, I noted only 26 of those tracks that I know for certain are available for NR2003. I have a feeling more of them probably are, though I would need to research that. And some of them may not work; Bowman Grey, for example, can only host 20 cars in a race and not a full 43-car field. I will do some digging and get back to you folks. I believe I may post some polls up on Reddit and here for the voting to begin (drivers, points system, tracks, etc.), probably in the next day or two. 406. I definitely regret making comments like I did here...but I still get happy when Danica and/or Jimmie wrecks. They're just my two least favorite drivers, but I wish no harm on them. 411. This is one of three races I have ever attended in person and the first one in over 6 years. When Junior was leading late the crowd was erupting and to see him win was truly a spectacle I won't soon forget. 413.
