I don't know how the race will unfold Sunday, except for the fact that they're going far too fast. Frankly, I hope Gordon's record pole speed, like those that Bill Elliott set at Daytona and Talladega in 1987, stands in perpetuity, because these cars need to be significantly slowed down, and I'm afraid that something terrible is eventually going to happen if they aren't slowed down. Exactly what, I don't know and hope to never find out. Let's just hope that whatever NASCAR's planning to do after the race helps that along, because it can't be too soon, both for the competition side of it, and the safety side of it, because these are, in my mind, borderline unsafe speeds for these cars and for that track. 7. Then add to that the fact that he's been in only two races this year (Las Vegas and Loudon), and that he was slowing down at RCR as it was, and Burton's run should not surprise anyone. And by the way, to add to post #6, 32 of the 43 cars qualified at over 20 MPH for this race, including some of the "dog" cars at the back. Even two of the BK Racing cars, the #23 of Alex Bowman and the #83 of Ryan Truex, almost always among the slowest cars in the field, qualified at over 200 for this race. And four more qualified at over 199 MPH, including the third BK Racing car of Cole Whitt. 9. someone posted: 08.15.2014 - 6:13 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) All Roush cars in the top 15?!? 10. Matt Crafton practiced and qualified Martin Truex Jr's 78 Chevy due to Truex taking time off to support his girlfriend, Sherry Pollex, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Truex still plans to race Sunday. Roush Fords look to be back up to speed, at least for this one weekend. Justin Allgaier has consistently been able qualify/run in the top 20 for a few weeks in a row. He's making a case for a bigger team to snatch him up. Joey Logano has made it to the final round of knockout qualifying in 19 of the 21 races that have gone all three qualifying sessions this year! The only races he didn't? Talladega in May and Daytona in July. 14. cjs3872 posted: 08.15.2014 - 7:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I didn't watch the qualifying session, Kenny, but given that there were three qualifying runs, could it be that some of he guy that are usually very good were sandbagging in qualifying so they wouldn't have to run extra qualifying sessions, and thus put extra strain on their engines? I know the race is just 400 miles, but I have to wonder if some of the teams weren't sacrificing a good starting position at a track where you can easily move up through the field, and where the pit stalls are a little more forgiving, but where the engines are strained to the limit, just so they can save a little wear and tear on their engines. Remember that Jimmie Johnson had this very race in the bag not too many years ago and blew up with five laps remaining, handing the race to Greg Biffle. Trust, me, I believe some of these teams are sandbagging so they don't have to run their engines so hard. Jimmie Johnson practicing and qualifying so poorly may be intentional, as might be the case with Dale, Jr.'s qualifying run, simply because they may want to save their engines for when it counts. Remember that since each of them qualified so poorly, they only made one qualifying run, while those that qualified in the top 12 had to make three qualifying runs. And as much as the engines are being abused at Michigan, that could end up being a factor on Sunday. And the 48 and 88 teams might have coordinated such a plan. If they both run up to the front on Sunday, then it might very well have been a case of sandbagging on their part to reduce miles on their engine under the most demanding of conditions. 15. Jeff Burton is way passed his prime at this point of Cup career besides being a well known bad qualifier even at his peak aka 1997-2000 although he had 4 poles in 2006. Burton had good seasons after 2000, but his seasons were 1997 to 2000 time frame and is where you judge Jeff's qualifying skills. The other thing to look at is Jeff Burton in his prime actually was a weaker version of Matt Kenseth. Matt Kenseth was a poor qualifier at Roush like Jeff Burton was, but those two were great on race day. The only difference was Matt was good at bigger variety of tracks. 16. Even if they can run them wide open, if you took that much horsepower away, it could reduce the speeds by 10-15 MPH because they wouldn't be going that fast to begin with. On shorter tracks, it wouldn't make that much of a difference, but on the bigger tracks, such a change would make a sizeable difference in the speeds, simply because top speed would be reduced, which in turn would slow down overall speeds. What I'm saying is that they're going so fast at Michigan that it's not just a competition factor, with the cars not being able to stay close together, but it's now a potential problem in regards to safety with them going so fast. If something happens entering a turn at 210-215 MPH, the results could be devastating, even with the advances in the safety of the cars that we've seen over the past 10-15 years. Heavy crashes are a worry, of course, but so is the possibility of them going airborne because of the speeds, and the fencing is not as fortified at Michigan as it is at Daytona and Talladega, where cars getting airborne is a constant danger. 23. Eric posted: 08.15.2014 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) DB1995, Tony Stewart isn't exactly know to qualify well at Michigan based on his starting Average spot in his cup career at Michigan is 19.4, but his average finish is 11.7 at Michigan. This is a big stat because JGR did build good horsepower when Tony was there and HMS almost from the beginning is known for horsepower also. I also mention JGR because Bobby Labonte usually qualified well at Michigan when he was JGR. That means you shouldn't point at the car, but more on the drivers along with Stewart wasn't exactly know qualify great at Michigan even before his broken leg. The fact is Jeff Burton never was known for his qualifying outside of his 2006 season and Stewart isn't exactly known to be a great qualifier at Michigan either in his cup career. The other thing is Stewart is not known for qualifying despite having 15 career poles and a 15.3 career starting average in his cup career. 24. ii posted: 08.15.2014 - 9:26 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) "And by the way, to add to post #6, 32 of the 43 cars qualified at over 20 MPH for this race, including some of the "dog" cars at the back." The Nationwide cars are down 200 HP compared to the Sprint Cup cars and they typically run within 10-15 mph of them. 26. ii posted: 08.15.2014 - 9:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) Another thing I noticed... And Jim, let's not forget that the Nationwide Series cars have more downforce than the Cup cars do, and that, combined with the fact that they have less horsepower, allows them to run wide open all the way around most of the bigger tracks (even the 1.5 mile tracks), meaning that although they don't go quite as fast in a straight line, they can go just as fast in the corners as the Cup cars do, which allows them to run overall faster lap times than the top speeds would normally allow them to run. 28. 23andJoe posted: 08.15.2014 - 10:38 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) Cjs, I'm sorry to say this, but you are far, far, far past the 'boy who cried wolf' threshold with these predictions of disaster. 29. But history say that, at some point, something's going to happen, and it's going to be BIG. When you have cars that are designed to be going that fast, and going too fast for the tires they're running on, not to mention the higher center of gravity that the NASCAR cars have, it's a recipe for disaster. It's not a matter of when something's going to happen, but when. I hope it's not any time soon, but history tells us that something's going to happen, and it's happened before in NASCAR, as well as IndyCar racing when cars have gotten too fast. A number of the NASCAR disasters in 1964 was a product of the cars going much faster than the tires of the time would allow, and when a similar thing was happening in 1969 and 1970, the drivers knew what was about to happen, so they took action to stop it from happening. In 1969, almost all of the drivers boycotted the first Talladega race because the tires couldn't handle the high speeds, and in 1970, several months after the tragic crash that took the life of Talmadge Prince in a qualifying race at Daytona, it was at the drivers' behest that NASCAR introduced restrictor plates, because they knew something was going to happen if nothing was done. The tragic events of the 1973 Indianapolis 500 was another disaster that could have been foreseen, and for the same reason. The speeds got way too high too quickly, and nobody was prepared for it. Due to increased technology, the speeds increased more than 25 MPH from 1970-'72, and everything came to a head at Indy in 1973. In 1982, history repeated itself when Gordon Smiley had his fatal crash in almost the exact same spot where Danny Ongais crashed the previous year. And in that case, the cars had increased in speed 10-15 MPH in just two years, and again, the competitors weren't ready for it. And Bobby Allison's disastrous crash at Talladega in 1987 was another near-disaster that could have been foreseen. In the years leading up to 1987, not only had the speeds increased, but so had the number of horrendous crashes where cars got airborne at Daytona and Talladega. What happened with Allison was simply the climax to the series of bad crashes due to the ultra-high speeds. Now fortunately, we haven't yet seen anything bad happen at the tracks where we've seen these ridiculous speeds in NASCAR the last couple of years, but if history's an indicator, something big is going to happen if nothing's done about the high speeds. Now we know something is about to be done about it, but the question is, will it be enough? I hope it never comes down to that, but with the ultra-high speeds, tires that have proven that they have trouble holding up to the strain of the high speeds, and cars with a higher center of gravity, if something does happen, it could be very bad. Let's just hope we never find out what would happen in such a situation again. 31. I guess this has to be said yet again. Betting odds are set purely by betting action, not by any racing expertise. Johnson has the best odds because a lot of people bet on him, driving his odds down. If Milka Duno was entered in this race and millions of patriotic Venezuelans were betting heavily on her, her odds would be good as well. Casinos want the betting action to be spread evenly so that no matter who wins the race, they make money. The betting odds in no way reflect the opinions of experts about who is likely to win the race. 32. ii posted: 08.16.2014 - 12:53 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I understand that Jim, that's why I said "Screw you Las Vegas" 33. The downforce levels and corner speeds are similar, but the trucks have much more drag and less power. The gear ratios aren't really any lower because you have to remember that while the cup cars are turning nearly 10000rpm, the trucks and nationwide cars are only turning up to about 8500rpm, and of course all three series use the same size tires and wheels. It's just like riding say a 10 speed bicycle, you can only pedal so fast, you have a certain diameter tire, with the chain on the smallest diameter sprocket in the front, and the largest diameter sprocket in the rear the bike is in its lowest gear. If the front sprocket has 25 teeth and the rear sprocket has 25 teeth, the ratio is 1:1, one full revolution of the pedals is one revolution of the wheels. On the larger sprocket in the front(40 teeth), and the smallest sprocket in the rear(10 teeth) one full revolution of the pedals is four revolutions of the wheel. The ratio is 0.25:1. Pedalling as fast as you can you'll be going four times faster with 0.25:1 ratio. The cup seies engines can for lack of a better word pedal faster. 48. I see more downforce options on the table including dive planes (think two or three tiny splitters mounted on each side just below where the head lights would be), more spoiler height, and different rear-end gears. NASCAR reluctantly is going to test a low downforce option (evidently on driver demand), but I don't feel like they will be open to that idea when everything they are doing is going the other direction. Three three power levels also will be tested. I feel that more downforce and drag coupled with less power (100HP less at least) would produce much better racing at wide tracks with high speeds (Michigan, Fontana) and further damage racing at intermediate tracks and larger that are not wide or singe lane (Charlotte, Darlington, Indianapolis, ect.) Short tracks would also be damaged with increased drag and downforce (Bristol, Richmond). Martinsville would likely not be effected due to low corner speeds. However, if the horsepower drop was significant enough it may make the track more difficult to pass on. This could make it less exciting (or not depending on certain factors). A low downforce option with lesser power would greatly lower average and top speeds and would improve racing at short tracks most notably. Michigan and Fontana would see worse racing, but almost all other tracks would experience better racing. The best thing that could happen (as I've been saying for a long time) would be a small power drop (75-50 HP), a great reduction of downforce (none if possible), and as great an increase in drag as is possible. 56. joey2448 posted: 08.16.2014 - 3:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "And at these speeds, I fear for what could happen. Actually F1 cars don't even get that high, partially because there's not a lot of opportunities to get going that fast on a road course, which is all they driver, but the top end speed on a NASCAR stock car and a formula car isn't much different (although I do wonder how an F1 machine would compare with an IndyCar machine at Indianapolis? On the oval layout obviously). The biggest difference in lap times comes in acceleration and deceleration, as well as cornering. F1 cars are wickedly fast in that department. 57. cjs3872 posted: 08.16.2014 - 3:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @49 and @51, I think it could very well be a possibility. Let's not forget that the very first race run with restrictor plates was at Michigan in 1970, which was won by Charlie Glotzbach. And the crash that Ryan Truex had is sort of thing I'm worried about with the cars running these speeds, because the cars run in NASCAR are not supposed to be running those kinds of speeds. These cars are designed to run up to 200 MPH, but not significantly above that, and if Ryan's car was, in fact, unrecognizable after his crash, that could be a warning signal to NASCAR about letting the speeds of these cars get out of hand. It's good to hear that he walked away from it, but that could be a warning of what is capable of happening should something go wrong at these speeds. And 1995 Subaru, I think NASCAR letting the drivers adjust the cars from inside the car is a terrible idea. Part of what separates the drivers in NASCAR apart from drivers from the other major disciplines of the sport is that they have to drive ill-handling cars, and do so for a life of a fuel run, up to 80 miles (and it used to be 100 miles). To me, that's harder work than allowing them to adjust during a fuel run, and more penal to them if they happen to call for the wrong adjustment. Allowing them to adjust the brakes is as much a safety measure as it is a competition measure, but that's as far as is should be when it comes to drivers making adjustments from inside the car. And often times, if a driver adjusts the line he's running (which he can certainly do this week, with all the options Michigan gives a driver), he can actually run faster or slower. But they should not ever allow the drivers to adjust the chassis settings from inside the car. That's what the pit crews are paid to do during pit stops, and if the driver calls for a wrong adjustment, then that's the driver's fault, and he should have to live with it until either the next pit stop, or the end of the race if there are no more pit stops to go until the race ends. 58. He went as far as to say that you could not hardly even drive the cars with no downforce. So you have to have downforce for the cars to be able to race. And if they take too much downforce away, they'd actually create lift, meaning that the wheels are off the ground. And while everyone talks about the need to take away downforce from these cars, NASCAR actually tried that in 1998, and the result was one of the worst years of competition in the modern history of the sport. Does the term "5 and 5 rule" ring a bell? Only when they added downforce for the finale after the championship had been clinched did a competitive race break out. So I don't think taking downforce away is the answer, though I think they could do it in certain areas without affecting the racing, and the first place to go is the side skirts, and I'd eliminate them, except for the tracks where the highest speeds are achieved. I think NASCAR is aware that if they take too much downforce away, especially at the speeds that are currently being run, that the cars would become undriveable. That's why I think NASCAR's looking at slowing the cars down first, and then possibly looking at ways to take downforce away, while not harming the overall competition. Another thing they can do is to undo the rule change regarding the minimum ride height, because that's resulted in the teams running the cars much lower to the ground than they ever have before, and set the minimum ride height at four inches off the ground. I also think they should look at doing away with the bump stops, because that limits suspension travel, and the above factors have resulted in the tires becoming the springs of the car. After all, if they legislated out bump stops in 2001, what makes it such a good idea to have them now? 61. numbah10hatah posted: 08.16.2014 - 3:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How did the Ryan Truex accident happen??? 62. numbah10hatah posted: 08.16.2014 - 3:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (5) #FireRyanTruex 63. On the oval layout obviously). The biggest difference in lap times comes in acceleration and deceleration, as well as cornering. F1 cars are wickedly fast in that department." Formula 1 cars typically reach terminal velocity at around 310km/h (192.6 MPH) without DRS. This I've seen primarily at CoTA on the .62 mile long back straight. With DRS that terminal velocity is greater, but still only about 325 km/h (202 MPH) IndyCar at Pocono was blistering, but IndyCar doesn't seem to mind the high speeds. Likely, this is due to relative spectator safety due to lighter cars. I'm not sure that drivers are terribly safe, however it is a spectacle and I enjoyed watching that event greatly. (500 miles and only 1 caution for a spin that did not result in any contact). The drivers understand the risks, and this is how I feel about that. Spectators should NEVER be in danger of their lives or injury. 64. epzik8 posted: 08.16.2014 - 3:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Not a good weekend for the Truex brothers. 65. If that is indeed what happened to Ryan Truex, he should thank his lucky stars that all he got was a concussion, because that could have ended up far, far worse. Remember that, as early in the weekend as it is, they probably hadn't yet started running a higher groove, which likely would have meant a longer run-up to the wall and a harder hit. And also, let's not forget that the reason the F1 cars don't reach the speeds they're capable of is because they race on road courses. If they raced on a 2-mile oval, those cars could easily reach 240-250 MPH with the horsepower those engines can produce. In fact, during "Trading Paint" in 2003, Steve Matchett even wondered what a F1 car would do if it did race on an oval track. and we know sports cars are at least a match for IndyCars when it comes to speed, because they're actually more aerodynamic than an IndyCar is, simply because of the enclosed cockpit. So it stands to reason that a sports car with an enclosed cockpit is the fastest car in American circuit track racing. 69. With about 1200hp and a turbo charager you could do some moving. Even with Cup cars moving faster today then ever, i do notice that as runs go on speeds do drop off. It gives lapped cars a strategic way of making their way back on the lead lap, and if you get trapped a lap down because of a caution you won't get completely screwed (You lose track position, but I'd take restarting 20th over being a lap down and having no shot to move up through the field). Honestly, I think the wave around makes the free pass kind of redundant. 165. IMO if Jeff doesn't retire after next year I think his last season will be 2017. I honestly don't feel like Jeff would retire after 2016 because i don't think HMS would have any replacement lined up. Chase will more than likely already be in cup and the only other person they have in the fold currently (Reagan Smith) could very well be in the 9 car for RPM assuming Ambrose goes back to Australia. Also factoring into this is Kyle Larson's contract with Ganassi which according to jayski runs out in 2017. I honestly feel like if Ganassi isn't a championship contending team by then, Larson might very well want to go to a better team, and with Jeff being a few years older and retirement more likely HMS could be his landing spot. I really can't see Jeff racing past 2017 idk why but it just seems unlikely to me that he will. As for him getting to 100 wins, assuming he doesn't win again this year he'll need at least 3 wins in each of the next 3 seasons. For much of the race, it was a battle between him and Joey Logano, but in the later stages of the race, Gordon put it into another gear that even Logano's car didn't have, because he pulled away from even him in the latter stages, and when he the lead on that final restart, he was actually turning laps at 200 MPH in the last few laps of the race, which is astounding to me at that track, if only because of the 18 degrees of banking and the wear and tear on the engine from nearly 400 miles of racing, as well as the previous qualifying and practice sessions. And as for Brad Keselowski finishing in the top ten after hitting the wall, that's the result of being next to the wall when his tire blew, because he didn't hit it that hard, which allowed his team to make the necessary repairs to get him back up into the top ten. Had he been further away from the wall when his tire blew, he would have been knocked out of the race like Kyle Larson was because he would have hit it much harder. And back to Gordon. Isn't it interesting that his three wins this year have all come at tracks where he hadn't won in at least 10 years? His win at Indy came a full decade after his last win there, his win at Kansas came nearly 12 years after his most recent triumph there, and his win at Michigan today, his third there, came over 13 years after his last win there. In fact, when he last won at Michigan, the twin towers at the World Trade Center were still standing majestically. That's how long it had been since he last won at Michigan. But his recent dominance (two wins and nearly a third in the last four races) after not having such a streak in such a long time reminds me of that Jim Nantz said at the 1986 Masters regarding Jack Nicklaus, when he uttered these words after Jack's 16th hole birdie that tied him for the lead in the final round of that year's Masters: "The Bear has come out of hibernation". It appears right now that Jeff Gordon has now come out of hibernation. I said after his win at Indy that the official countdown to 100 wins had begun, as that left him ten wins shy of hat unthinkable milestone in modern-day NASCAR. Today's win means he has nine to go to reach that magic 100th win. Whether he gets there is mater for the future to decide. And by the way, if he wins another race with Alan Gustafson as his crew chief, Gustafson would become the fourth crew chief with whom Gordon would have won in double figures, as he won 47 times with Ray Evernham, 23 times with Robbie Loomis, and ten times with Steve Letarte. Today's win was his ninth with Alan Gustafson on top of his pit box, meaning that the next win would also put Gustafson in double figures in terms of wins as Jeff Gordon's crew chief. As Kyle Petty said a few weeks ago, this is, and has been the "Jeff Gordon era", and I think he's showing still another generation of drivers that hadn't seen Gordon dominant like this, exactly why. Jimmie Johnson has more championships, but Gordon casts a far bigger shadow over the sport than Johnson ever could at this time, because of his two decades at, or near the top, and the overall caliber of competition he's gone up against in these 22 years of excellence. 332. This was the 4th consecutive race that he had the most Fastest Laps. 52 at Indianapolis 26 at Pocono 20 at Watkins Glen 48 at Michigan Considering how rare 4 consecutive Wins, Poles and Dominant races are, I believe this is the first time since loop data was instituted in 2005, that someone had the most fastest laps in 4 straight events. Gordon also moved into 2nd place in laps led at Michigan, leading for 1058 laps now, Continuing a streak of 4 straight races where he reached laps led milestones. First to 500 laps led at Indianapolis First to 1000 laps led at Pocono Second in the Modern era to reach 700 laps led on a Road-Course at Watkins Glen Third to lead 1000 laps at Michigan 10 Front-Row starts and 11 Top 2 finishes at Michigan. 333. It was cool though when NASCAR America had a 90 minute special on Memorial Day weekend covering the Monaco GP, Indy 500, and Coke 600." SPEED Center is what I miss the most of all the shows, because it was a Sunday recap show of EVERY major form of motorsport, not just NASCAR. It featured highlights of every race; NASCAR, F1, IndyCar, Sports cars, MotoGP, the whole lot. "The speeds in F1 were routinely reaching 220mph at Monza towards the later stages of the V10 days." If he can duplicate that performance and move up one spot from second to the win, then he'd become the third "berth stealer" in the Chase this year, joining Aric Almirola and A.J. Allmendinger as drivers that have stolen a berth in the Chase from others who would ordinarily get in the Chase, based on their points position, by winning a race. After all, with simply winning a race guaranteeing a spot in the Chase (there are three races left prior to the Chase cut-off and only 12 winners this season), someone from completely out of the blue could find a way to steal a win, and backdoor their way into the Chase, and as good as Stenhouse has been at Bristol, he could be the next driver that steals a berth in the Chase from someone like Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman, or Clint Bowyer. And as silly as this might sound, Marcos Ambrose is another possible berth stealer, given his track record at Bristol, as he's another who could pull of a big surprise and pull off a surprise win in Thunder Valley. 358. cjs3872 posted: 08.18.2014 - 2:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Texas and Richmond, Sector (#356). Jeff just needs 9 more victories to reach 100 in his career, and a total of 14 to reach Pearson's mark of 105. Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson had a verbal conversation after the race which I don't understand, if Newman looks at the tape he'll see that Jimmie Johnson's car just got loose and Johnson got into Newman's side trying to correct it, plus an atta boy to the crew to get that faulty shifter knob fixed, 8th was a blessing but the car is hard to handle with that broken piece. Jeff Gordon still had the best car in the race and pretty much could drive away once the tires set in. A good win and a good weekend. But jacks up the straight away speeds too warp 9 levels and it still isn't ok. Far as i see it you can't have it both ways. You have too trade off something. Even if they reduce HP by 100 (which is still the rumor), they still will not slow down that much. The other package they tested the drivers said didn't change a whole lot (bigger spoiler, DTM style dive planes and all). While i get the concerns for 223.5mph on a straight away but it is a trade off. But then again NASCAR has done pretty what i wanted them too do "aero and tires." 385. murb posted: 08.18.2014 - 9:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) When it comes to Atlanta being the second race of the season, I'm not as worried about the attendance as I am the weather. One of the reasons Bristol will now apparently be run in mid April is because of the weather issues we've seen in recent years with the Spring Bristol race. So with Atlanta being in the same part of the country (not to mention that the previous March Atlanta date had a lot of weather problems over the years), I think weather is definitely something to be concerned about. I don't think the attendance has been as big of a deal for Atlanta since they cut down to just one race, so I'm not as worried about that. Fortunately, if the Atlanta date does end up floundering in that spot, there are a lot of options. They could do a swap with Kansas (give Kansas the #2 spot, and give Atlanta the Mother's Day spot), they could do a swap with Sonoma (Sonoma is race #2 and the first of four West Coast races, Atlanta gets a Summer time day-into-night race), or they could end up doing a swap with Homestead. I would actually be most in favor of Atlanta swapping with Homestead (Homestead being race #2 and Atlanta getting its old school finale date back), but Chad's Hair Plugs is right. It'll never happen on the count of Bruton Smith. In that situation, he would probably just can Atlanta all together and finally live out his dream of Vegas being the finale. But yes, most importantly of all, Darlington being back on the Labor Day slot is a fantastic step in the right direction. I'm glad to see that Darlington will be back where it belongs. Hopefully this will put an end to all of the rumors we've been hearing about them canning Darlington over the past ten or so years. 386. That's something that can only lead to disaster. Softer tires and a lower amount of aerodynamics will tend to help the quality of the racing across the board, if the tires will be able to last, but they have got to slow the cars down, or the tires simply won't last. That's what happened a decade ago. They had grippier tires, but the cars were going so fast at some of the tracks that the tires simply could not take it. But they have to take horsepower away, and I say that about 75-100 HP needs to be taken away, in addition to the trade of mechanical vs. aero grip. But the reported straightaway speeds scares me, because NASCAR seems to be forgetting one of the old axioms of life, and it could come back to bite them. That axiom is "those who don't learn from history are sure to repeat it". And NASCAR seems determined to repeat the same mistakes from the past. And that axiom is not just limited to the ultra-high speeds of the cars, but also putting a race at Atlanta in the spring again. Seriously, have they learned nothing from all the weather problems that spring race used to have? In 1991, the race was never shown on TV, except for the first 40 laps, due to rain In 1993, the superstorm that blanketed the nation east of the Mississippi River postponed that race one week. The 1999 spring race at Atlanta was also delayed a day by rain. What they should do is to run the next four races after the Daytona 500 in the western part of the country. Those races, in no particular order, should be at Phoenix, Las Vegas, Texas, and Fontana, CA. I think moving the Southern 500 back to Labor Day weekend is a good idea, since you would have Bristol, Darlington, and Richmond all back-to-back leading into the Chase, not to mention the tradition of the Southern 500 on that particular weekend. I think it would be just as good of an idea to move it to where it was in 2004, the next-to-last race of the season, because then that would make the teams vying for the championship have to earn it at THE most demanding track on the circuit on everything from the pit crews to the drivers to the equipment. Then we'll know that whoever wins the championship will have earned it, because Darlington almost always identifies who the best is. 389. Most fans of your ilk feel this way because you've never seen it (I think you've said you started watching around 2005, correctemundo?) The big deal is that Darlington on Labor Day was the single most intense single-driver race in the whole world for 54 years. Typical races were run in 100+ degree heat. So it looks like they will indeed be running a four car NNS program, unless Sadler leaves (I'd be surprised) and/or Kyle finally decides to focus his time on Cup (I'd be REALLY surprised). The only real question mark left with the Gibbs development drivers is where Erik Jones is gonna run, though I'd have to imagine that he'll most likely wind up replacing Bubba Wallace in the #54 truck full time. 414. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 08.19.2014 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "But they have to take horsepower away, and I say that about 75-100 HP needs to be taken away," The packages they test toke away 50 and 100hp. They have to do both, and the question is, what order would, or should they do it in? I think they have to take the horsepower away first, because of the safety aspects of the higher speeds. Then when they slow the cars down, they can then proceed with the aero and tire changes without as much worry about the tires lasting. Part of the problem that Goodyear ran into about 10 years ago was that the cars then were going faster than the tires they were using would allow, which resulted in blowouts and Goodyear having to run a harder tire to decrease the chances of them blowing out like popcorn kernels. If they go with the aero changes and softer tires at today's horsepower and speed levels, we'll just see races become battles of attrition and pit crews, because of tire blowouts, as the cars are going far too fast to use softer tires, meaning that the pit stops will be more important than they are now, due to the increased number of pit stops that will be made, because cautions will also rise due to the increased number of crashes and debris cautions (real ones from tire and metal debris from tires) that will ensue. Besides, all they have to do is to roll back some of the recent changes that have been made, such as eliminating the minimum ride height rule (and move the minimum ground clearance back to 4" off the ground) and increasing the weight of the cars back up to 3400 lbs. (from the current 3250 lbs. that they weigh now), and it will immediately be harder for the drivers, because those rollbacks alone would make the cars harder to drive. These changes over the last two years are a significant reason why speeds have gone up considerably circuit-wide. If you roll back those rule changes, you may not even have to take horsepower away, or at least you would need to take such a low amount of horsepower away that they could do it through gearing. 416. murb posted: 08.19.2014 - 7:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Word is Jeff Burton will once again drive the #14 at Bristol. 417. Darlington is the least Yuppiefied speedway on the NASCAR circuit. It's not near a major metro area. You don't go to vineyards to do wine tastings on your way to the track. It's a place where chicken still has bones. It's a track with throwback appeal, but also a non cookie cutter that is still challenging to race on, no matter what rules package you throw at the cars. Prior to the construction of Daytona, the Labor Day weekend race at Darlington was THE prestige event on the schedule. Getting it back would right a wrong in the eyes of many old school fans. 418. Mr X posted: 08.20.2014 - 2:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I started watching NASCAR in 2003, the last year of having the Southern 500 on Labour Day weekend. I'm saying this as someone who has rarely been able to catch the weekends racing action live as a result of an annual out of town family gathering. I was thrilled to come home to find that the race hadn't happened yet in 2011. Especially given that it was probably my favourite race from the last few years. I was and am totally a fan of the Labour Day tradition of the Southern 500. I still question the decision making surrounding breaking a 53 year tradition for a Labour Day race in Fontana, especially as Fontana hadn't aged into the track it is now. It wasn't a fan favourite in 2004, unless you lived in the area. That being said the Southern 500 tradition was broken 10 years ago, Darlington certainly isn't as tricky as it was prior to the repave, and the track had found what I feel is a very good place on the schedule on Mothers Day weekend. Ditching that date in favour of a race in Kansas this year was a big mistake too IMO. Just as the Southern 500 began to feel at home on a special weekend, it once again gets put where it will fit for a date at a track with a fraction of the character. Part of me likes the idea of a Labour Day Southern 500 again, but as I said above the tradition was broken 10 years ago, and IMO if a tradition goes stale for that long it's pretty much dead, when you combine the fact that Fontana has been replaced by another fantastic 500 mile event at a hot, tricky, characterful, track that has a long history in NASCAR, we've started a new tradition. Let's face it, both of these tracks would likely be history if Bruton Smith got his way, they both need to be associated with a significant weekend to maintain their stead in the future I feel. Atlanta is the new Labour Day classic, and displacing it to revive a mostly dead tradition just isn't quite worth it IMO. Leave Atlanta alone, and putting Darlington on Mothers Day weekend. Tell Kansas it's lucky to have two f**king dates. They go where they'll fit. 419. dennyfan11 posted: 08.20.2014 - 9:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) If they do this package, I think that it will kill NASCAR's excitement. I don't see it as the "Dodge Charger 500" run on Labor Day. I see it as "The REAL Southern 500 is back". I think it's a great thing that will return Darlington and that race back into the place you want to win the most (along with Daytona and Indy). I do agree about Atlanta though. I too see the current single date Atlanta race as a "Modern Day Classic" of sorts (largely due to the epic Gordon/Johnson battle from the 2011 race, which to this day still stands as one of the top five Cup races I've watched in 15+ years of watching). So I too am weary about having that race be #2 on the season (especially when you also throw in the potential weather issues). Hopefully down the road they will do a swap though and give Atlanta a better date that will make that race stick out as its own Crown Jewel event (I would love it on Mother's Day actually, with maybe a daytime Iowa race replacing Spring Kansas and being race #2 of the season). But once again, I think having the Southern 500 back on Labor Day is gonna be a great thing. I see it as The Return of the original race, not just a continued watering down of Darlington. I feel a lot of closure and new excitement in this. The ORIGINAL Southern 500 is gonna be back (at least in my mind). 422. There is one thing NASCARF fans are best at; spending other peoples money. NASCAR givng Darlington back is "traditional" Labor Day date is partly correcting a screw from 10 years ago. Next thing they need too do is give the track a 2nd date (perhaps in the Chase) then all will be right in the world. As i've said before, NASCAR is inbetween 0% and 99% correct in what they do, but in this case, they are 100% correct. 424. From 1974 to 1986 (1963 also did this) I don't see anyone campaigning for Infenion (or Fontana) to be made the finale again. Granted, Fontana isn't an icon as much as Ontario was (And then when I think of it, Ontario was little more then a badass version of Indy) and Infenion isn't nearly as widely respected as Riverside, but the point still stands. In addition, from 1987 to 2000 (2001 would have counted if not for the delayed Loudon race) Atlanta was the season finale. It had earned it's place there for remarkable season ending events like '96 and '92. I don't see anyone petioning that to move back to the end of the season either. Another tradition was to run the two Talladega races within 2 two 3 months of each other, because it would test equipment and the driver to drive in Alabama in the muggy heat of July and August. I don't see anyone campaigning for 'Dega to come back into the summertime. Granted, you could say that it's along the lines of comparing Apples to Oranges or Apple to Microsoft. But I agree with Mr. X. After a while, some Traditions become dead. Darlington should have kept it's Mother's Day weekend date, Atlanta, the Labor Day weekend date. I think I posted a comment some months back about NASCAR needing to stay the same for a while to create new traditions. Traditions like these are what I'm talking about. We don't need to run back and hash in old traditions. Yes, they were great. Yes, it created good feels all 'round the track and the country. But something new needs to come in once in a while, and I do feel that losing Darlington has dealt well with loosing the Labor Day weekend date, and should have kept the Mother's Day date. Then again, don't bother listening to me. My first race that I was actively watching was the 2004 Daytona 500. 432. After all, Darlington losing the Labor Day weekend date was like the Indianapolis 500 or Coca-Cola 600 losing it's date on Memorial Day weekend, or the U.S. Open golf championship losing it's traditional Father's Day weekend slot on the PGA Tour calendar. Even the Daytona 500 has always been, to some extent, associated with President's Day, a tradition that ended in 2012 (and they've had nothing but problems ever since, with two races marred by rain and the other overshadowed by Kyle Larson's horrific crash the day before the 2013 Daytona 500). The outcry if one of those major events lost it's traditional slot for a newer event, or because of some kind of legal action, would be as immense as the Southern 500 losing it's Labor Day weekend slot after 2003. I wonder what would happen on this board if the Coca-Cola 600 or the Indianapolis 500 were moved off of Memorial Day weekend. There are traditions that should never be altered, and the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend was one of them. The races at Indy and Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend are two more traditions that should never be altered. 435.
