Larson, Almirola, Whitt, and Mears all spun and/or had contact with the wall. Ricky Stenhouse had the fastest car in practice, but his team had problems getting through inspection, so that basically screwed them out of getting a good qualifying run in. Should be a great race. There doesn't seem to be a real clear cut favorite so far. 2. I saw that too, and it's got me really curious about the NNS and Truck schedules. Obviously we've heard about the Cup schedule already (Darlington back on Labor Day, etc), but I'd have to imagine that some pretty serious shuffling is happening with the other schedules as well, seeing as though they're having a big announcement for all three series live (or semi-live) on TV. If the other schedules were staying the same, I don't think they'd be making this big of a deal about it. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading too much into it. 7. I'd obviously rather have it be a day race, but it will most likely be a Sunday night day-into-night transition type race, similar to how Atlanta has been in recent years. I'm actually okay with that. The 2004 Southern 500 was also like that (finished at night), so I think it will be just fine. Most importantly, it's back in the slot it belongs in. 26. The start of this race is going to be interesting to watch, as the Top 10 starters have several who have been on a roll this year. You know they're going to be fighting for the chance to get another win. As for next year's schedule, I cannot wait to see how Atlanta fares as the second race of the season. And hopefully this is the start of NASCAR finally getting the damn hint that you don't mess with tradition, as Darlington returns to its old date next year. I have three words regarding that: KEEP IT THERE! 27. epzik8 posted: 08.23.2014 - 3:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Let's see if Penske-affiliated vehicles can sweep the weekend tonight. 28. I'm seriously tempted to once again post my "dream" schedule mockup. This is just what I WANT and what I think the schedule should be. I tried to make it at least semi-realistic. First 26 Races -1. Daytona 500 (goes back to its original Valentine's-ish date) -2. Phoenix 400 (start of the West Coast swing - made it 400 miles) -3. Las Vegas 400 -4. California 400 -5. Sonoma 350K (fun ending to the West Coast Swing) -6. Atlanta 500 (pushed it back a few weeks - it'll be run the last week of March) -7. Darlington 400 (yeah, two Darlington dates again) -8. Bristol 500 -9. Martinsville 500 -10. Talladega 500 -11. Richmond 400 (Daytime) -12. Charlotte 600 -13. Pocono 500 (only race here, so it's back to 500) -14. Dover 450 (only race here, so I made it sort of a compromise between the 400 miler and the old 500 miler) -15. Circuit Of The Americas (instead of two TMS dates) -16. Kansas 400 (only race here, daytime Summer race - I'd much rather have this than Kentucky) -17. Firecracker 400 -18. Michigan 500 (only race here, so it's 500) -19. Mid Ohio -20. Brickyard 400 -21. Watkins Glen -22. Bristol Night Race -23. Southern 500 at Darlington -24. Richmond 400 (night, sets Chase) The Chase (making it 12 races, because I'm adding in two Twin Races at Iowa) -25. New Hampshire 300 (I always liked it better when the Chase started here, so it swaps with Chicago) -26. Chicagoland 500 (500 miler) -27. Ontario/Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (replaces Dover, race for the Canadian fans) -28. Iowa Twin 300 Miler #1 (this one takes place Saturday night) -29. Iowa Twin 300 Miler #2 (takes place the next day on Sunday afternoon) -30. Talladega 500 -31. Martinsville 500 -32. Texas 500 -33. Phoenix 400 -34. Road America -35. Atlanta 500 -36. Homestead 500 Finale So yeah, I think that's a good schedule. I have 6 road courses (including two in the Chase - now they won't just be throwaways for all the big teams), two dates again in Darlington and Atlanta, and I chopped off unnecessary second dates at Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Texas. The only thing that would need to be worked in is off weekends (I was thinking there would be three off weekends - one after Spring Darlington for Easter or whatever, one after Spring Richmond where the All Star Race takes place at Charlotte on a Wednesday night, and then one final one after the Firecracker 400, which then leads to a grueling stretch to end the season). Oh yeah, and while I'm at it, we're going back to the original 10 man Chase. 2004-2006 style. No gimmicked up Super Bowl race at Homestead. 35. murb posted: 08.23.2014 - 6:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whoops, that's obviously supposed to be "First 24 Races". 36. The twin Iowa idea would never fly. One would have to be Saturday afternoon and the other Sunday afternoon/night. I like the idea of a single Michigan and Pocono 500 races, but maybe bump Dover to 500... make it require some mechanical talent as well. Phoenix is already a sh!tfest so I would not lengthen it; if anything it should be shortened to a 300 lap race. 37. IndyCar and Trucks run in Texas in June. Granted, it's in an entirely different part of Texas, but I highly doubt it'd be a problem, other than the threat of rain (what Summer race DOESN'T have the threat of rain?). I never thought about Road America though. Maybe swap that with Sonoma or something. And as for Iowa, it wouldn't fly with who? Nascar? In this hypothetical, I am Nascar. I think it's a damn good idea. Those midwest/Iowa fans are hardcore. I think they'd surely come out and support that. 40. He has the ability and the equipment to win at least four or five, but he's never even gonna sniff one. He wears himself out in all of these little league races, he throws in the towel when things get tough, and worst of all, he completely obliterates his team's morale by forcing them to wade through all of his bullshit. With how young he is, he'll probably win 45 or 50 Cup races, and be a Hall of Famer because of all his little league prowess (most NNS wins ever, etc - ugh), but overall, he has left SO much on the table in the series that matters. Just for fun, I added up all of Kyle's finishes since his top 10 at the Coke 600 (he was 3rd in points after that race), minus his three second place runs, and decided to see what his average finish was. His average finish over those races? 33.9. (With those three second place finishes, it's 25.9.) 343. I'm a Kyle Busch fan, but it pisses me off how much of his Cup career has been wasted because of his attitude of "throw in the towel/i quit" when things get a little rough and of his obsession with racing in Nationwide, Trucks & other minor events. Not only does he wear himself out running like a 100 races a year but he let's bad results & incidents in "minor league" races effect him on the Cup side (I would bet money him speeding on pit road while leading tonight that ultimately lead to his getting wrecked stems from the fact he was still fuming over what happened last night). 344. I've been on record in the past of saying that I would be hesitant to fire Kyle, but at this point, Kyle is clearly never going to learn. He's been in the sport for ten years now (more than that if you count his limited Busch schedule in 2003). If he was going to figure it out, he would have done it by now. It is now at the point where his Cup performance is suffering because of his attitude. So why not do it now? It wouldn't even be that big of a deal. Just move Carl to the #18 (M&M's was rumored to want him anyway), and then just run the #19 for only 17 races (since that's the amount that Arris will be sponsoring) as your R/D or young gun car (have Bubba, Suarez, and maybe Erik Jones each run a handful of races). It would be a pretty simple solution, and overall, it would more than likely be a HUGE boost to team morale. But yes. After tonight (as I read more and more about this, he was being a TOTAL dick on the radio to Rogers - and he just left his car on pit road), I think if I was JGR I would absolutely move on from Kyle. He's like screw this deal, I can't drive this thing, I quit. When Kyle runs well, he can contend for the win when his car is right, if it isn't then he is out to lunch most weeks and that's how it's been for a lot of weeks, Kyle is not contending at a level we're accustomed. Tonight was just a bad night, I keep saying this...if Kyle would get up for winning a Cup championship like he does winning a race he would be something else. And I am with some others on here, I'm not sure if he should be listed as engine failure or quit, did he lose the engine, or did he quit because he couldn't drive it or meet the minimum speed? I did not see that. This is a guy that was effectively fired by Rick Hendrick in 2007 because he realized that even he couldn't get Kyle to be a team player, and when he walked out on his team in the spring race in Texas, you pretty much knew that Hendrick realized that Kyle was a lost cause. Remember that it was Kyle he replaced with Dale, Jr., and not Casey Mears, and they each won the same number of races that year, one. And while it was good to see Kyle revive the traditions of JGR's #18 car that J.J. Yeley put in the toilet in his two years with JGR, it became evident during the Chase that nothing was going to change. But the real kicker to me that shows that Kyle needs to be fired, and I said he should have been fired when it happened, was the incident in 2011 when he went 128 MPH on a country road. I said then he should have been fired, and he's not gotten better, and he's not going to, because he simply doesn't care. Here's a guy with almost limitless potential with the maturity of a ten-year old. And let's not forget that his problems tonight were self-inflicted, because he wouldn't have been in that mess that ruined his race if not for a needless speeding penalty on the pit stop on the competition caution while leading the race. Yet, he can't face up to his own mistakes and blames everyone else. On to other things. A number of posters have stated that Joey Logano may be a contender for the championship in the Chase this year. I'll go even further than that, because I think he's one of the favorites to take it all this year. Let's not forget that Logano was the best driver Ford had last year, and he's not going to get caught up in all the stuff that Brad Keselowski is liable to get himself caught up in, because he's "been there and done that". There have been a lot of drivers fired by Penske, but Logano may be the first driver I know of who's career has been saved by Penske, because Penske trusted what Brad Keselowski thought about him, hired him, and I now think that he's one of the favorites to take the title this year, if he's not THE top challenger to the Hendrick Motorsports organization, even more than Brad Keselowski is. And with two races to go until the Chase, there are really only three spots left, and it almost became two tonight, because if not for some questionable strategy on the part of the #1 team, Jamie McMurray might well have won this race, but that questionable strategy, combined with an inside column position on the final restart, ended his hopes. If we're going under the assumption of the 12 winners and Matt Kenseth (by points) already locking up 13 positions, then there are only three spots left, and I only see about four or five drivers capable of getting those spots, with Kasey Kahne and Austin Dillon probably finishing themselves off with their runs in this race, though Kahne's problems were caused by mechanical fatigue induced by the track. If the final three spots are going to be filled via points, then it's Ryan Newman's, Clint Bowyer's, and Greg Biffle's spots to lose, because I don't think any other non-winners can catch any of them in points, and I don't see anyone else winning prior to the Chase. I think there's a very good chance that this race set the field for the Chase, with the 12 winners and Kenseth, Newman, Bowyer, and Biffle (on points) being the 16 drivers in the Chase, because I don't see anyone else realistically getting in. Next behind Biffle is rookie Kyle Larson, but he's more than half a race (26 points) behind Biffle, and since I see Biffle's team playing it conservatively, and no real chance of a winner that hasn't won this year winning a race (unless it's Matt Kenseth, who is getting closer to returning to victory lane), all Newman, Bowyer, and Biffle need to do is to stay on the track, and they'll make it via points. The only chance I see of a longshot winner is a fuel mileage derby at Atlanta. Short of that, I think this race decided who makes the Chase in 2014. 356. Penske's cars will be in contention for the championship. Actually, this could be considered an absolute prediction given that they have had the most speed of any team thus far this season. Let's hope that Joey has the right mentality for dealing with Jimmie and the #48 team to beat them for the title, or that Brad realizes he has a shot at another championship and uses his 2012 approach. I think someone we won't think of right at this moment will also contend for the championship. The most extreme case of this happened in 2011 with Tony Stewart. I think the guy who could fill that position this year is Harvick, if his team goes out of Geoff Bodine '94 mode and if he quits pulling moves that make him enemies during races. I also think that the two races before the Chase will be exciting as well. First we go to Atlanta, a track known for tire wear and slippery conditions. And then we go to another under the lights short track race. I'm posting a lot this week because some of my enthusiasm for NASCAR has briefly returned. Teams know they have to go all out and get a win, you'll see drivers get more aggressive than normal, teams get more aggressive with their strategies than normal. I kind of hate the new wins being all important changes to the chase, but it is making things more interesting. Kurt Busch tried to go all in last week battling Gordon for the win but got too aggressive hit the wall and finished 31st, but you know what? It wouldn't have made a difference if he finished 2nd. A 2nd win would've locked him in and his points standing doesn't matter, you aren't seeing some drivers get overly conservative for a solid points day because it just doesn't matter. 359. The 2012 night race (the one after Bruton decided to grind out the top groove) is a close second, but this one had great action throughout! I feel like Bristol has actually morphed into a mini Darlington, since the cars are (near) constantly running right up against the wall in the turns. I think he's a Hall of Famer even now, but I suspect my standards are lower than other people's would be, since I would accept Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant, Ernie Irvan, Ricky Rudd, etc... as Hall of Famers and I'm not sure everyone else would. Having said that, I agree he will never win a title. He is in his tenth full-time season. Only two drivers ever have won their first championship AFTER their tenth full-time season (Bobby Allison and Dale Jarrett). Counting just my lifetime (1985-present) to more accurately reflect 'recent history', it appears that you need to win your first championship in your first six seasons in good equipment to have much of a shot. The only drivers who won championships in my lifetime who did not win their first title in their first six full-time seasons were Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte. However, in both cases I would say it was their 6th season in good equipment (I'd say Jarrett had good equipment in '93 and '95-'99 but not before '93 or '94, and BL got his title in his 6th season for Gibbs). Darrell Waltrip and Alan Kulwicki win out on technicalities as 1981 was DW's 6th full-time season (even though he NEARLY ran all the races in 1975) and Kulwicki won the title in his 7th season but 6th full time season (besides which, nobody would claim he had good equipment all those years...) This trend MAY change considering the championship has been dumbed down and there is so little new talent emerging in this period. But generally, if you don't have a title in your first six years in good equipment, you're not going to. It doesn't look god for Kyle. I don't think it looks good for Harvick, Edwards, or Hamlin either. I might make an exception for Logano who is starting to click. I wouldn't eliminate him as a championship threat in my head if he doesn't win this year, but I'd be surprised to see Harvick or Edwards win one just as much as Kyle. They are, however, more consistent. "But the real kicker to me that shows that Kyle needs to be fired, and I said he should have been fired when it happened, was the incident in 2011 when he went 128 MPH on a country road." Al Unser, Jr. was not fired for hitting his girlfriend and leaving her beside the side of the road. Tony Stewart isn't going to even face any repercussions for an incident that could be argued to be vehicular manslaughter (I don't think he did it on purpose but I also don't think someone without his star power would not even be charged). Scott Wimmer was not fired for DWI, and Travis Kvapil was not fired after pleading guilty to assault, and they weren't even stars... Yes, Kyle Busch speeding to that degree could be considered reckless endangerment, but he didn't hurt anyone and I do think people have a double-standard for him that they don't have for other drivers... I personally think what Stewart did was way worse but he's getting away with it because he's a champion (and yes, Kevin Ward was an idiot but I don't think that absolves Stewart from responsibility...an everyday person who runs into a stupid pedestrian wouldn't be treated with kid gloves like this...) It's worth noting that Stewart and Unser were already washed up at that point too. I wouldn't call Kyle washed up... If anybody at Gibbs should be fired, it should EASILY be Denny Hamlin who has clearly lost whatever he had since his crash. Yeah, he was up there at Bristol for a little while but only due to pit strategy and how often has he been contending for wins AT ALL? Honestly, Gibbs is having a truly rotten season horsepower-wise and I don't think anybody realized it until recently. Matt Kenseth has a history of making the most with weak equipment (better than almost anybody else, even if there are a few drivers who usually do better than him with strong equipment), while Kyle and Denny both try to overdrive and get themselves into trouble when they don't have perfect cars... But if we're talking about firing a Gibbs driver (news flash: you're not going to get anybody better to replace them, especially in this era when Nationwide/trucks' talent level is VERY shallow compared to the past) it has to be Hamlin first. Replacing Kyle with someone like Darrell Wallace, Jr.? I'm really not feeling it. All the truck championship contenders seem very mediocre to me compared to the truck drivers from the '90s and 2000s who were actually able to compete with the established Cup talents...I see very few drivers in either Nationwide or trucks who can seem to challenge the hegemony of the Cup drivers, even when they drive for Cup-affiliated teams. When Kyle enters a truck race he wins and barely faces any competition. The same was NOT true when Mark Martin or Terry Labonte or Ernie Irvan (generally held to be better drivers, although I see Kyle's talent as being greater than Terry's; it's just that Terry did more with it) entered truck races in the '90s vs. Hornaday, Sprague, Skinner, etc... And even THEY failed at Cup. In the last 10-15 years, trucks have been where Cup washouts largely dominated (T. Bodine, Benson, Musgrave, Hamilton, etc...) So I don't see much hope for anyone in trucks now, except possibly Ryan Blaney. Kyle wins the Nationwide/truck races repeatedly because most of the superior Cup drivers don't enter them. I don't think Bubba Wallace (although he will eventually make it to Cup, and probably replace Hamlin) is ever going to be a star. I'd like to be wrong, but I just see trucks as the new ARCA. "These races wouldn't be so bad if at least the commentary team was good. But espn just bores you to death and makes everything depressing. Depressing as in watching them call the race with little emotion and a lot of errors and dumb remarks." I've come around on Dale Jarrett as a driver. He was a lot more talented than I gave him credit for being in his early years, especially when I looked more deeply at the percentage of races he won via a green-flag pass vs. his contemporaries, where he showed very well. Indeed, he showed better in that regard than his fellow Yates drivers Davey Allison and Ricky Rudd did. I used to say Jarrett was easily the worst of the four main Yates drivers behind Irvan, Allison, and Rudd, but now I'd take him second behind Irvan. However, as a commentator, he is tremendously disappointing and boring. He's the Scott Goodyear of NASCAR (except that Jarrett was actually a great driver, which Goodyear wasn't in IndyCar racing...) ESPN apparently thought because they had so much success with Ned Jarrett in the past that his son would be a natural. I don't know why anyone would necessarily think that though. We've seen repeatedly that driving talent is not necessarily inherited, so why should announcing talent be inherited? Having said that, ESPN has much less journalistic credibility now than they had then, so maybe it all comes down to that ultimately... 366. And of course we all know about the 2010 #11 team with Denny. "If anybody at Gibbs should be fired, it should EASILY be Denny Hamlin who has clearly lost whatever he had since his crash." I don't think Denny should be "fired", but I do agree that he's not the same driver he once was, and if I was JGR, I would be replacing him with Bubba Wallace for the 2016 season (I disagree about him by the way - I know he hasn't even raced a Cup car yet, but from what I can tell, I think he's actually gonna be a really good Cup driver - he's got a winning attitude). Denny will probably just wind up with MWR or something and just finish out his career as a Biffle/Newman type sporadic winner. Not bad, but clearly not the same perennial champion he was before his injury last year. And as for Kyle being fired, I don't really care about all the stuff he's done off the track. I'm just saying that if I was Joe Gibbs, I would be done with it. He's never going to learn, and it's now gotten to the point where his attitude is affecting his Cup performance. I would be moving on from him after this season solely for performance and team morale reasons. Besides, just putting Carl in the #18 (M&M's wanted him anyway earlier this year) and running the new #19 as a part time R/D car seems like a much better idea to me than a full on expansion to four cars (it seems like Hendrick is the only team capable of properly managing four cars, and even they usually have at least one that is not on par with the others). 368. Sean posted: 08.24.2014 - 11:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My point is that firing Kyle for performance reasons seems pretty bogus when Denny IMO is performing worse. Just as it would have been if Hendrick had argued that he had fired Kyle for performance reasons when Mears was running worse... Now in Hendrick's case we know he was fired for his emotional issues, so that's a little different, but it's still a major level slap in the face (or should be) that Hendrick had more faith in Casey Mears than him. 369. murb posted: 08.24.2014 - 12:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "My point is that firing Kyle for performance reasons seems pretty bogus when Denny IMO is performing worse." My thing though is that at least Denny has an excuse with his injury and (for his recent mediocrity) Grubb's suspension (and even then, I don't think Denny has been THAT bad this year - definitely not that much worse than Kyle, if at all). Kyle has no excuse though. He's letting his sad sack attitude destroy team chemistry on the #18. He's easily one of the top five most talented drivers in Cup, yet he's under-performing because he lets things like Ryan Blaney completely outclassing him in an NNS race get under his skin. He should be right in the thick of at least semi-contention for this championship (I admit they definitely don't have the cars/horsepower this year), but he's not because of himself. But yes, overall, I think the time has come for Gibbs to move on from both of these guys. I would give Denny another year and then replace him with Bubba Wallace in 2016 (or someone else if Bubba isn't ready), but I think I would be done with Kyle after this season, especially since it would be pretty easy to just slide Carl (not as naturally talented as Kyle, but he's at least contended for multiple championships) into the #18. 370. For novelty value, I used the Latford system, here are how it would have been: Top Sixteen - The race winners of the season, besides Bill Elliott are in the chase. Advances on wins: Newman (Dover), Johnson (Loudon), Waltrip (Talladega) Advances on points: Harvick, Stewart, J.Gordon, Dale Jr., Kenseth, Busch, B.Labonte, T.Labonte, R.Gordon. Eliminated - Nemechek, Biffle, Jarrett, Craven Bit of a drama would have been here, as Robby beat Joe on holeshot or what by TWO points, courtesy of Robby having won a race more than Joe. For those who say "lel Mikey top 12", he would have been in points even if he would have finished 2nd at Talladega. Top 12 - Advances on wins: Newman (Kansas), Stewart (Charlotte), J.Gordon (Martinsville) Advances on points: Johnson, Harvick, Dale Jr., T.Labonte, Kenseth Eliminated: B.Labonte, Waltrip, R.Gordon, Busch Top 8 - Advances on wins: J.Gordon (Atlanta), Dale Jr. (Phoenix) Bill Elliott, a non-chaser won Rockingham. Advances on points: Johnson, Kenseth Eliminated: Stewart, Newman, Harvick, T.Labonte Final Race - Johnson 3rd, Gordon 5th, Dale Jr. 24th, Kenseth 43rd So the juggernaut would have been born 2 years early. 1.Johnson 2.Jeff Gordon 3.Dale Jr. 4.Kenseth 5.Stewart 6.Newman 7.Harvick 8.Terry Labonte 9.Bobby Labonte 10.Busch 11.Robby Gordon 12.Waltrip 13.Biffle 14.Nemechek 15.Jarrett 16.Craven 371. Barring something ridiculous coming up, I will avoid NASCAR as a whole because I still believe that this system is wrong. I will not, and never will, support a system that runs so heavily on factors that are luck-changed. - - - - - Next year, if I am able to, I will attempt to follow the entire season with my own point system, that I will post the results of per race IF I can. I am a college student, so don't get your hopes too high. Some kinks still need to be worked out with the system (Darlington...why do you have to have such a strange length!?) but here's a quick look on how it would run with the current set-up: 1st Place: 220 Points 2nd Place: 190 Points 3rd Place: 180 Points 4th Place: 170 Points 5th: 160 Points 6th: 150 Points 7th: 140 Points 8th: 130 Points 9th: 120 Points 10th: 110 Points 11th: 100 Points 12th: 95 Points 13th: 90 Points 14th: 85 Points 15th: 80 Points 16th: 75 Points 17th: 70 Points 18th: 65 Points 19th: 60 Points 20th: 55 Points 21st: 50 Points 22nd: 45 Points 23rd: 40 Points 24th: 35 Points 25th: 30 Points 26th: 25 Points 27th: 20 Points 28th: 15 Points 29th: 10 Points 30th: 5 Points 31st-43rd: 0 Points Every Mile Led: 1 Point if done under Green. 0 if done under Caution. Miles run under GWC will count, but again, only the Green Flag Laps. After First 26 races, we enter 'Chase Time'. At this point, the top 10 advance into the chaze (Going with Chase v1.0 instead of 1.1 with 12 drivers. Because usually, 2-4 drivers in the 12-man chase are virtually out as it starts due to XYZ reasons) 1st in Points Going in: Has his total reset at some high number (Unsure what number, I'm leaning toward 3000) He gets a 100 point bonus going in for being the Points Leader at the end of the regular season, rather he was leading by only 2 points or 250 after the 26th race. Everyone from 2-10th is reset at the exact same number of points, but with 25 bonus points given for every victory they have. The points leader also gets this 25 points per-win bonus.(There is the emphasis on winning in the pre-chase. 4 wins and in the chase, and you're equal to the points leader assuming he has won no races.) 1st: 3100 2nd: 3000 3rd: 3000 4th: 3000 5th: " " 6th: " " 7th: " " 8th: " " 9th: " " 10th: " " As for penalties that are awarded which deduct drivers points...I'll figure something out. All of this is still up for change. If you hear from me after the Atlanta race, I'll likely be trying to work out kinks in this system and running tests on past seasons with noteworthy points tallies (1994, 1992, 1986, 2004, 2005, 2011, 1975 etc) 388. They've actually been fighting aero-push off-and-on for a number of years at Richmond, also because of the higher speeds. Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart were complaining about aero-push at Richmond as far back as 2003. They're also having this problem at Watkins Glen, as Jeff Gordon's crash there last year was purely from aero-push. Part of the problem this year has to do with how low the cars are to the ground, since there is no minimum ride height rule in the Cup Series. Because of that, the air suction from the lead car is creating problems for the following cars, even at tracks where you wouldn't think that would be a factor. IndyCar racing began to experience this same kind of problem when wings were first allowed in 1972, because they put gave those cars so much downforce that they stuck to the track. And now they're toying around with wing plates on each of the two front corners? All that's going to do is to ad even more downforce and make this situation worse. 400. That was my gripe about that particular post. I agree that Dale, Jr. is not likely to win in the Chase, mainly because of Chad's likelihood of dirty dealing in regards to the #88 team, but at least dale, Jr. could have been listed, and he wasn't. Also, I know Chad wants to win that seventh championship for himself and Jimmie, but I can't help but feel that there's also a certain amount of pull from the #48 team (and all of Hendrick Motorsports) to get crew chief Steve Letarte, who's supported the #48 through the ups and downs of his own team through the years, a championship to call his own and send him to the NBC booth on top. So there might not be as much shadiness by the #48 team toward their shopmates as there has been in the past, just to get Steve Letarte a championship. And on that subject, who would the #48 team try to help the most if the #24 and #88 are battling for the championship at the end, and the #48 team isn't, which wouldn't be a complete shock, given the wild roller coaster ride of a season the #48 team has had in 2014, compared to the steady season that both the 24 and 88 teams have had. Remember that the last time the #48 team was out of contention was in 2011, and after the #48 fell out of contention HMS pulled out all the stops to get Tony Stewart, who was driving HMS equipment, as well long-time HMS employee and then-Stewart crew chief Darian Grubb, the championship, and they succeeded. Stewart couldn't have had the Chase he had (winning half the races in that Chase) without a full-on effort from Hendrick Motorsports, which was weak, except for the #24 team that year. 407. It's exactly the same as this year other than Atlanta as race #2, Bristol in mid April, the Southern 500 back on Labor Day weekend (the BEST schedule decision they've made in a long time), and Kentucky being pushed back to after the Firecracker 400. The only other changes are to current races. Spring Texas will be a Saturday night race again (stupid idea in my opinion), and the Firecracker 400 will now be a Sunday night race. But yeah, these are pretty much the only changes. I like it though for the most part. So I would have to imagine that most of this is once again just the networks putting other sports (or events, like NBC with their 4th of July parade or whatever) before Nascar. And also, Jamie lined up on the inside, simply because of the number of cars that stayed out. Had one fewer or one more car stayed out, McMurray would have been on the much faster outside line on the restart. In fact, earlier in the race, Jimmie Johnson intentionally stopped his car leaving the pits, trying to get the outside on the restart, but that backfired on him. And racefangurl (#415), Jimmie didn't crash in the 2012 finale. What happened was that, in perfect position to take the race and the title (he was using the same pit strategy as Jeff Gordon was using that eventually won him the race), the pit crew made an error (not enough fastened lug nuts, I believe), which forced him back into the pits to correct the error, costing him a lap, and he later broke his transmission, which not only handed the championship to Brad Keselowski, but also cost him second place in the final standings to Clint Bowyer (and nearly third to Kasey Kahne). 448. Then TG was removed from the Hulman and Company bored and resigned as president of the IRL when Hulman & Co. were focused on saving money at all costs. They decided to add more events to try and raise IMS's coffers after the IRL lost so much money, hence the Nationwide race, the Grand-Am/Tudor race, and the Indy GP which were all poorly received when they started (although the Indy GP appears to be well-received now). "There actually will be more races on Network tv in 2015 than 2014. And back in the day before the 01 contract tons of races were on cable." The big difference is that NBC Sports and FS1 are small networks that are barely viewed most of the time when compared to ESPN, TBS, and TNN, which were much more popular in the '90s than either NBCSN or FS1 are now. ESPN/TBS/TNN were on almost all cable packages, while NBCSN/FS1 are frequently only on advanced cable packages. Further consider that cable has gotten so expensive that many people can't afford it before and are cutting back. That means that people are probably less likely to have even the ordinary cable channels (like ESPN, etc...) than they were in the '90s and FAR less likely to have the more obscure channels. IndyCar's popularity plummeted the year they went to NBC Sports for most of their races, and I expect the same thing to happen here... People will forget about the other races when so many races are on channels that nobody is usually watching. Even FX probably had a higher profile in 2001 than NBC Sports or FS1 have now. Even if there are more races on network next year, ESPN is in far more homes than NBC Sports, so this will still hurt. The truck series essentially became a non-entity when they went from ESPN2 to SPEED, IROC folded after going to SPEED, Champ Car folded after going to SPEED, etc..., etc... Almost no one has gone to any of those channels and gained popularity. Even though ESPN's coverage sucks now and NBC Sports's is much better, get ready for NASCAR's ratings descent to accelerate further. (Many people think it would be better if IndyCar did a time-buy on ESPN than getting paid by NBC Sports...that gives you some idea of what the difference is. Sure, NASCAR will elevate the network, but the network's lack of reach will still likely hurt NASCAR... This isn't like 2001 when NASCAR alone could raise FX's profile. NASCAR was hot then, not so much now.) 449. Sean posted: 08.26.2014 - 11:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Hulman and Company bored" Whoops. That should have read board obviously. 450. In fact, if anything, a number of the races in the Sprint Cup Series are not long enough, and I include the finale at Homestead in that group of races I believe are too short, because I feel that if the last race is on a speedway, that it should be 500 miles, because that distance has always been auto racing's test of champions. One reason the Chase is so predictable is that there aren't very many of what I call "Wild Card races", races where things can go wrong at almost any moment. Talladega is the obvious one, but aside from that race, there are only two 500-mile races in the Chase, Charlotte and Texas. And after the last of the 500-mile races, you can almost predict who the champion was going to be, because the remaining races at Phoenix and Homestead were short and not known for causing trouble, either with guys running into each other, or mechanical failures. What happened in 2012 was a very unusual case, and aside from the fuel mileage race at Phoenix in 2010, I can't recall anything else happening in the final two races that altered the championship picture in the last ten years. 477. racefangurl posted: 08.28.2014 - 10:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 2012 thing refers to Johnson's transmission trouble, I think. And I take it destroya based on comment 461's a Pocono fan. It's got a weird shape, so it's almost like a road race, my dad thinks. Some people don't like Pocono, so that's another thing that made me think it would give up a date, the rainier one perhaps. I don't live too far from Pocono and my parents once went to a resort in those mountains, btw. 478. (Each corner having a special symbolism to another famous track) What I'm afraid of is that Pocono, along with Martinsville and Darlington, is one of those tracks that losing one date mes it could become very, very close to loosing the other, despite what the fans think of it. Pocono is pretty dang far away from any major city, and the weather is unpredictable at best. Those two reasons alone could make it prime to be dropped completely. 483. murb posted: 08.28.2014 - 4:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tony Stewart will race at Atlanta. 484. I would consider the extra 100 miles for the remaining race a trade-off for losing the other race. And I'm one of the few that believes that the one remaining race at Fontana should never have been shortened to 400 miles after they lost the other race they had when they had two races there. The racing at Fontana is never going to be that good, regardless of whether it's 200 miles or 500 miles. The track is simply not conducive to that. After two or three laps, the field spreads out like crazy, like it does at every other track of it's size. The only reason there has been two decent finishes there in the last four years (2011, 2013) has been because of late caution flags, and nothing else. Both of those races were Kyle Busch runaways until late caution flags changed everything. If they're going to run two races at those tracks, then yes, 400 miles is a good distance, but if they're going to run just one race, then it should be 500 miles. 492. My opinion is that NASCAR should wait to see if/when Stewart wins Atlanta or Richmond before deciding one way or another. If he doesn't win, it's a moot point and doesn't even need to be discussed. 493. I certainly wouldn't put it past them. Hell, Gordon didn't even win a race last year at the point the Chase field was set (he didn't win until the Fall Martinsville race), and NASCAR still just gave him a "13th" spot in the Chase. 497. "This is something that will definitely affect my life forever. This is a sadness and a pain I hope no one ever has to experience in their life. That being said, I know that the pain and the mourning that Kevin Ward's family and friends are experiencing is something that I can't possibly imagine. I want Kevin's father, Kevin Sr., his mother Pam and his sisters Christi, Kayla and Katelyn to know that every day I'm thinking about and praying for them." "The racing community is a large family. As you guys know and everyone's saddened with this tragedy. I want to thank all my friends and family for their support through this tough, emotional time. And the support from the NASCAR community, my partners, all of our employees has been overwhelming. I've taken the last couple weeks off out of respect for Kevin and his family and also to cope with the accident in my own way. It's given me the time to think about life and how easy it is to take it for granted. I miss my team, my teammates, and I miss being back in the race car. I think that being back in the car this week with my racing family will help me get through this difficult time." "I also understand that all of you have many questions and want a lot of answers. But however, I need to respect the ongoing investigation process and cannot answer and address the questions at this time. Emotionally I'm not sure if I could answer them anyway. I'm here to race this weekend and I appreciate your respect and there will be a day when I can sit here and answer the questions. Thank you." 498.
