A bit hypocritical after last week but don't feed the trolls.

I guess the only problem with Tony winning would be everyone saying how
"Tony ran someone over to pump him up to win a race!" Or something like
that.

I wish it was. I was at least hoping once the story leaked Tony would
get some sympathy from people who don't follow NASCAR. Obviously that
wasn't the case, and I wouldn't mind if the story fell off the face of
the Earth today, because although it was serious, it happened in the
past. 9/11, Sandy Hook, Dale Earnhardt's death, etc. all happened in the
past and we don't talk about them every day.

The biggest things on my mind in regard to NASCAR are how my drivers
will do at Atlanta and in the rest of the season. How high they'll end
up in the points standings. Also, who will win Atlanta and some thoughts
on the rookie drivers, none of which are pie-in-the-sky thoughts.

Kind of an interesting piece of news I came across yesterday that could
affect Chevrolet's representation in NASCAR. Apparently the sales of the
Chevy SS street car are well below expected results after they went onto
the market last year, and they plan on dropping the car by 2017. I can't
say I'm too surprised by this, considering I've only seen one of these
cars on the road so far, and they cost a ridiculous amount for a sedan.
(The only package for the car is the V8 package which starts at about
$44,000). Now the question is if these reports are true then what brand
will Chevy use in the Cup Series?

They'll probably go back to the Impala brand that they used during the
COT era.

Concerning this race, I like Kenseth. To my memory, this is the most
speed I've seen from the 20 team at the intermediate tracks this year.
At the very least, he should finish well enough to clinch the 1st points
spot in the Chase.

The issue Annett has (out of his control) is that Pilot has to pay out
$92 mil. in a settlement for rebate fraud for diesel fuel rates. If that
doesn't affect the sponsor fee that they pay for Annett going to RPM or
staying with Baldwin, then I could see him moving. Otherwise, he might
have to stay at TBR if they keep the current sponsorship or they may
have to abandon Annett altogether if the numbers don't work.

As of now, Anonymous (#27), they're calling for a 50% chance of rain
with possible t-storms tonight (and a 95% chance of rain at about 6 PM),
but it looks good for tomorrow night, with virtually no chance of rain
and temperatures in the mid-80s at race time. But it doesn't look good
for tonight, and a postponement is a very good possibility with the
chance of rain not dropping below 40-50% from about 4 PM-midnight.
However, if the NNS race is postponed tonight, and if it had to be made
up on Labor Day, the forecast looks very good for Monday.

Ridge Parkway. He was 78 and had been one of the longtime leaders of the
Kyle Petty Charity Ride.

Probably either the Impala or the Malibu. I actually think it would be
cool if they used the Malibu. I think that body style would look good on
the Gen 6 (of course, I have no idea what the 2017 model of that car

That kind of disappoints me. I'll be missing the race on Sunday night,
so for selfish reasons, I was hoping it would be pushed to Monday (not
to mention that the last day race at Atlanta, 2011, is one of the best

for everybody watching.

Actually they're planning to ditch the current Malibu design, including
the (as they call it) "Camaro tail lights" within the next few years.
This would certainly be a great chance to bring the Camaro into the Cup
Series, which was recently announced as outselling the Mustang in the
two-door performance car category, but it wouldn't seem right if the
Camaro was in Cup while their classic pony car rival, the Mustang,
wasn't. After all, NASCAR's motto is "win on Sunday, sell on Monday,"
and basically every Chevy model, including the new Corvette Stingray, is
doing just that except for the SS.

manufacturer run them for the sake of consistency. If not, then I'm not
crazy about the idea. In that situation I would rather they just stick
with all sedans in Cup (like they have for years), and then have NNS as
the "pony car" series or whatever.

Or the Toyota-owned Scion company. They make a two-door
performance/sports car that I guess you could consider a competitor to
the Mustang and Camaro.

Funny because that bothered me too. That's why I've always liked GT
sports car racing: all of the cars are true matches against each other

I do not think the Cup series will be a "pony car" series but i do think
NASCAR will have a production-like engine design. The current design is
like over 50 years old so. One of the numbers that was tossed out was a
5.0L V8 with 800hp when the new engine design comes out in like 5-7
years time. Current engines are pushrod V8s with 5.7L displacement and
800-900hp.

NASCAR has been talking about updating the engines since about 2008, so
it has been in the wetworks for a while. But when they decide too do it,
it'll cost A LOT OF MONEY. Since 2007 the teams have payied for 2 new
cars (one NASCAR wanted and one fan demanded) and roughly 5 different
aero packages.

It should be noted that the SS is made in Australia, and was likely in
trouble anyway what with the announcement that Holden would stop
building cars and instead become simply a brand label (a la Vauxhall).

Well, you ever heard of touring cars then? Pretty good and racey stuff.
NASCAR is by no means distinctive with using everyday cars.
Even in the US there is Pirelli World Challenge which has great everyday
cars in it like the Volvo S60.

explain what is the big deal with Michael Sam's sexual orientation? It
is all over the sports channels that the Rams released him and the fact
he is the first openly homosexual player always follows anything about

(I've actually been paying close attention to practice & qualifying
since Smoke is back).

Considering I managed to last a grand total of 11 minutes worth of
playing time in Jordan-Hare yesterday before I nearly had a heat stroke
and had to leave, I don't think I would ever be able to be a spectator
in a middle-of-the-day summer race at Darlington or Talladega. Most
intense heat I've ever experienced was in Auburn, Alabama yesterday.
Easily topped that Talladega race back in May.

He's not the only one who blew it one that one, Ben. I also had them in
the Super Bowl, because of how stacked they seemed to be. It just shows
what an anemic coach and sub-par QB can do to a team, because they
should have been right up there, and instead, they went into the tank,
losing 14 in a row after a 2-0 start. They're not that good this year,
either, as I have them finishing third in the dreadful AFC South in
2014, ahead of only Jacksonville, who's ineptitude speaks for itself.

Stewart must win either tonight or at Richmond on Saturday night. Both
races are under the lights. If Stewart doesn't win either race, he'll

Well, I know that a part of me is rooting for Tony Stewart to win this
race or next week's race, if only to expose what a joke this year's
Chase format is, as far as eligibility goes. And if that were to happen,
we know Tony can get on a run and win a cluster of races and steal the
title, just as he did in 2011. In a way, I hope he wins tonight or next
weekend to get into the Chase, and then becomes a factor for the title,
just to expose just how awful and embarrassing the eligibility to get
into the Chase this year truly is. If they want to make it "win and
you're in", that's okay, but they need to make it so a driver has to be
in the top 20 after the 26 the race, instead of just the top 30.
Remember that in the last couple of years when they had 10 plus the two
Wild Cards that to be eligible for one of the Wild Cards, a driver had
to be in the top 20 in points to be eligible for one of the Wild Card
spots. Make it so that a driver has to earn it over the course of the
season, and not just one race.

And that's exactly what happened last night, Schroeder51. Joey Logano
could stay with Harvick for a few laps, then Harvick would pull away at
the rate of about a quarter of a second per lap. However, I doubt he'll
dominate the entire race like he did last night, because track
conditions change, and usually the old rule is that drivers who dominate
early in one of these "daylight to dark" races aren't up there at the
end. There are exceptions to that, of course, but that's the general
rule. And as awful as Kevin Harvick's crew has been at times, they could
have a bad pit stop at the most inopportune time to cost him the race,
or he could even run out of fuel, like he did at Kansas, which cost him
that race.

There is a lot of smoke coming out of the infield at Turn 3 but it's not
related to anything on track. Must be a thick campfire in the infield or
something.

Well, I had a feeling when Jeff Gordon had his blown tire that this
could be an almost-exact replay of what happened at Auto Club Speedway
with all the left side tire issues they had in that race. Allmendinger
had a left rear go, Gordon blew a left front, and now four teams having
tire problems at almost the exact same time? Even Ryan Truex's problem
may have been a tire problem of some sort, because he seemed to be
making a late entrance to the pits when he spun out, indicative that he
felt that he was having a problem. It seems that about 35-40 laps may be
the limit on how far they can go on tires, particularly left side tires.

They had the 1996 NAPA 500 on the old Atlanta layout on Sirius NASCAR

Well, Jeff Gordon only has to get one of his remaining two laps back on
the track because he can get the free pass to get the other one back,
and you know Kevin Harvick would never make it easy, because Gordon's is
the only car that's even close to Harvick's, in terms of speed.

What Gordon's trying to do is something he did in 2005, when he made up
three laps to win at Martinsville, but because he has to start in the
back on every restart (he could start up front to get his laps back in
2005), that's what will make it virtually impossible for him to pass the
leaders to make up the one lap he has to make up on the track before he
can even think about using the free pass to get the last one back.

And trust me, if the 11 team has those guns, then so do the 18 and 20
teams, and with the possibility of pit stops inside the last 10-15 laps,
that could give the JGR teams a BIG advantage over Harvick.

Another Kyle Busch moment...*sigh* reminded me of Texas 2011 when he was
pushing Hornaday.

As soon as I saw everyone coming down pit road, I knew Hamlin was gonna
win this. That pit crew has been gold all night long. This is like 2012
all over again.

I'm not even a Kasey Kahne fan, and even I am feeling the pain that his
fans are....boy.

This will be...crazy.

Gordon somehow comes back to score a 17th place finish, on the lead lap.
One more GWC and he probably would have gotten a top 10!

Hell of a job by Kahne on the restart. He nearly had this race taken
from him when Kyle and Truex tangled, but he was not to be denied. By
racing his way in, he probably just bumped Bowyer out of a Chase spot.
I'm not complaining!

has 3 top 10 finishes this year, wow. That's 2 more than I expected her
to get! I do think she has improved some this year, but not a WHOLE lot.

Well, despite all the chaos, which was started by NASCAR's
chaos-bringer, Kyle Busch, it's good to see that the right car won the
race, because Kasey Kahne was going to win the race had Kyle not run
over Marin Truex, Jr., so at least justice ended up being done there
with the right car winning the race. Actually, I saw the possibility of
Kasey winning before the third-to-last caution because he was running
faster than Harvick was at that point, and knew that if he could somehow
get in front of Harvick, that Havick was not going to have it easy
getting by Kahne, and in that respect, this race ended up playing out
exactly as it in 2009, because Harvick (and Juan Montoya) dominated that
race, but that race fell into Kasey Kahne's hands, and Kahne, then
driving for Richard Petty, locked himself into the 2009 Chase with that
win, so this race played out the same way for Kahne and Harvick that the
2009 Atlanta race did, and with the same result for Kahne, a trip to
victory lane and a spot in the Chase.

I just hope the fireworks at the end of the race, not to mention
Danica's best-ever Cup finish of sixth (and it would have been at least
fourth if not for the last crash), doesn't overshadow Kahne's great run,
because his was the best car in the last 100+ miles of the race, as is
so often the case when Kahne wins, because as was mentioned in the
broadcast, Kahne doesn't usually show up until late in he race, not
unlike fellow Washington state driver Tom Sneva, because that was
usually when Sneva was at his best.

Ironically, I said last week when I thought the Chase field was locked
that the only one capable of upsetting that by winning was Kasey Kahne,
and I specifically referred to him winning this very race, given how
good he is on the 1.5 mile tracks. Well, unless Clint Bowyer wins, or
someone else other than Ryan Newman or Greg Biffle pull out a miracle at
Richmond, the Chase field is, for all intents and purposes, set, unless
either Newman or Biffle have a freak problem, such a the one Bowyer had
in this race, as Bowyer (-23 points) and Kyle Larson (24 points) are
both a half a race worth of points behind Biffle, and Newman's
considerably ahead of Biffle.

And we saw in victory lane yet another reason why, love his team or hate
his team, Rick Hendrick's is the best team in NASCAR, because we saw all
four HMS drivers congratulating Kahne and so happy for him that you
thought one of the other three had won the race. What makes Hendrick's
the best team in the sport is how all the teams bond together once they
get to the track. Others, such as JGR, SHR, Roush, and the others have
good teams, but in NASCAR today Hendrick's team is the essence of what a
true team is, and in victory lane tonight, we saw another case of that
tonight.

As a Gordon fan this race was soooooo frustrating. He had a top three
car all night and finished 17th. He's had a lot of bad luck lately. Ran
out of gas with a couple laps to go at New Hampshire while running 2nd
(finished 26th), had and electrical issue @ Watkins Glen while running
2nd halfway through (finished 34th), ran poorly @ Bristol and finished
16th, and hit the wall tonight while running 2nd and could never get any
laps back till the very end when it doesn't even matter (finished 17th).
I hope this team had better luck in the Chase cause besides the two wins
@ Indy & Michigan they're struggling to get good results. To me every
race matters whether they're in the Chase or not. Congrats to Kasey
Kahne. All four Hendrick cars in the Chase. Harvick easily had the best
car and his pit crew let him down again. However, there could've been
more give and take so that last caution didn't come out. Kyle Busch was
a wrecking ball tonight.

Also, there's pretty much only one spot left because Newman pretty much
only has to finish top-40 to secure a spot. And Biffle has about a
half-race lead so it'll probably either be him or a new winner unless
Biffle has a disastrous race at Richmond.

Well, despite traveling all day, I did end up catching the race (by the
way, watching the race on an airplane with no sound and no BSPN talking
heads and storylines = underrated). Here's my thoughts:

- First of all, despite Harvick's total domination, I thought this was a
very good race.

- Despite the blown tire, nice return for Tony. I was glad to see him
running well in the opening stages.

- More epic failure from the #4 pit crew. They had garbage pit stops
literally all night. I don't blame Harvick at all for trashing them in
his post race interview. They've been costing him all year. If they
don't make some drastic changes, they will not win this championship
(which is a shame since they've been one of the three fastest cars all
year).

- More assholiness from Kyle Busch. He just flat out wrecked Truex for
no reason there at the end. Can't wait to watch him finish 15th
(hopefully 16th) in final standings.

- This was EASILY Kasey Kahne's most impressive Cup win to date. He
finally won one by taking over in the late stages. That's the most
determination I think I've ever seen out of him. Yeah, Harvick got
wrecked and made it a bit easier, but overall, Kahne earned this one. I
have no problems with him being in the Chase after this.

And as far as predictions go for Richmond and who makes the Chase, I'll
give those later in the week since I don't know what the full seedings
really look like now with Kahne getting a win. All I can say is that I'm
REALLY looking forward to Richmond. That should be a damn good race.

Kevin Harvick's crew didn't have a bad night in the pits, murb. It's
just that JGR came up with new pit equipment that gave them a sizeable
advantage over everyone else on their pit stops. When you have 12 second
pit stops all night and the #1 pit stall, that should be a combination
that's unbeatable in the pits, but JGR came up with lug wrenches that
gave Kenseth's and Hamlin's crews a huge advantage on their pit stops
all night long (and Kyle Busch would also have benefitted, if not for
his get-together with Tony Stewart that put him behind). I don't know if
NASCAR's going to look into this, and I don't think they should, but
it's a case of a team finding a way to get an advantage on the
competition, and JGR certainly did that. That's why the JGR cars (11 and
20) were beating Harvick most of the race. If you noticed, nobody else
beat him out of the pits all night long. But 11 second pit stops are
going to beat 12 second pit stops every time, especially if they're made
under caution, and JGR's wrenches were giving them a 1-second edge on
every pit stop they made.

While Tammy Jo Kirk won the 1994 Snowball Derby, it was not a Slim Jim
All Pro win. The Snowball Derby was only part of that tours points races
once: in the inaugural 1991 season.

Great run by Danica, but I say she's lost the battle to compare to Janet
Guthrie, who had 5 top-tens in just 33 starts.

Well said cjs3872.
The 4 crew was actually on their game tonight and busting out what
normally would be race winning stops, but JGR showed up with new &
improved impacts and set a new bar for fast pit-stops.
The only thing the 4 crew did wrong was not realizing there was no
chance in hell of beating Hamlin off pit-road and holding Harvick back
to 5th in line for a better starting position.
Harvick was gonna be owned starting behind half-old tires not dictating
the restart, and that's exactly what happened.

But that was the same for both lines on the restart on which Kevin and a
couple of others got crashed, TS1420. Sure, the inside line was king,
but who's to say that Matt Kenseth wasn't going to have the same thing
happen to him with two older tires? And how can you think about giving
up positions when you don't know how many cars stayed out in that
particular circumstance, if any did. Jimmie Johnson's team tried that
tactic at Bristol, but had a car that stayed out ruin that strategy
because Johnson was trying to get a car to pass him to be fourth on the
restart, but having a car stayed out meant that being fourth out of the
pits meant that he would be fifth on the restart, ruining that strategy.

* Kasey Kahne gets the win to needed to put him in the Chase, out of
three contenders left, Kasey had the best shot to win and the 5 car
sweeps the weekend as Kevin Harvick won the Nationwide event for JR
Motorsports.
* Kyle Busch flat out ran over Martin Truex Jr. for no reason, he has
not had a great year, he is locked in the Chase but Kyle has been
terrible the past couple of weeks. Not sure what's going on with Kyle
right now, not sure if NASCAR would send him to big yellow truck for that.
* Tony Stewart returns to racing and looked pretty solid to start, but a
blown tire and contact with Kyle Busch put him behind and then out of
the race. I say Mission Accomplished, he can still win to try and get in
the Chase but right now, that is stretching it.
* Jeff Gordon made up two laps during cautions to finish 17th after
hitting the wall and getting the thing repaired, they essentially made a
bad day into a great day.
* Danica Patrick finishes 6th, she got a little help from the late race
slam-bam but she earned that one tonight.
* We are not having 16 different winners in the regular year, but they
got close.
* Best pit crews go to JGR who were turning 12 and 11 second pit stops
with their hyper air guns, but they were still beat by 2-tire
strategies. Kenseth could have won without those two cautions, which
killed his strategy.

Awesome race and finish. Glad to see Kasey win that, one of the best
restarts I think I've ever seen. Danica also ran great all night again,
looking at the way shes run the last 9 or 10 weeks and the way she has
qualified, to say she hasn't improved immensly would be a lie.

You know, I'm not feeling any withdrawals or regret from pretty much not
watching any NASCAR this year with a few sporadic exceptions (I didn't
see any of this one). But there is one thing I wish I could be watching
unfold live instead of hearing about and that is the rise of Ryan Blaney
and the proof he is the Real Deal.

Him winning the Bristol NWide race can't be overstated. Yes, the 22 is
one of the dominant cars over there, making the Series pretty much
unwatchable. But it is a car and team built for experienced and
accomplished drivers Brad and Joey. For Ryan to get in that car and win
a companion race to go along with his stand alone win at Kentucky last
year is huge. As we have seen with the 54 NWide car, the experienced Sam
Hornish can win in it, but you just don't see non Cup experienced part
timers win in NWide. That win says a lot for him.

Then he won at Mosport (a race I totally forgot about despite planning
to watch it cause it is a road course). His Truck career is impressive.
Driving BKR equipment that 2012 Cup champ and philanthropist (one of
those is a complete lie) Brad K has only managed a single win in despite
his experience says a ton. And his 3 wins have come on wildly varying
tracks. The short track in Iowa, the road course in Canada, and Pocono
which is in a class called "Pocono". He will never win a 1.5 mile Truck
race as long as KBM is out there, especially in BKR stuff. But having to
go against those superior Trucks for 3 years now has taught him how to
get the absolute most he can out of his stuff. This is important.

Take Joey Logano. He never had to struggle until he got to Cup at 19
years old. Suddenly, since everything in Cup is a struggle and a fight
even when things are going right, he didn't know how to struggle. And
thus he flopped for 3 years. But in those 3 years, he finally learned
how to struggle. Then Gibbs released him right as he was finally ready
to be a Cup driver, and now The Captain is taking advantage of having
this talented driver who is only 24 and has already seen it all, being
heralded as the next Jeff Gordon, being a disappointment, being looked
at as damaged goods, being called the next Casey Atwood, having his
company publicly court Edwards, then Kenseth to take the car he is still
driving, getting shitcanned, rebuilding himself, and now being a top
driver ready to make the next leap. Ryan has learned to struggle quietly
and away from the harsh Cup spotlight.

Oh, and have I mentioned he is only 21 years old? (or has he turned 21
yet?) Roger can have what he has in Joey without all the high profile
turmoil.

Captain, here are your objectives for 2015. Continue to provide
championship level Cup cars for your two championship caliber drivers,
the likeable Joey Logano and the unlikeable Brad K (man have my stances
on those two changed drastically lol). And spend the year building
towards a 3rd full time team in 2016 for Ryan while giving him a full
2015 NWide schedule. You can build a dynasty with him. He is young and
has been tested. I would take him over Chase Elliott any day of the
week. Chase has never really had to struggle. In Cup, it is a struggle
even if you have the best car.

Agreed. I think he, Larson (once he figures out how to win these Cup
races, he's gonna be SCARY), Chase, and Bubba are the four guys to watch
for the future. All four of them seem to have the talent and the swagger
to be great Cup drivers.

Same here. And for me, not only have their personalities taken a
complete 180, but I think their potential in this sport has as well.
When Brad won the 2012 title, I thought that would be the beginning of a
total path of destruction. And Joey? I thought he would be nothing more
than the next Jeremy Mayfield (racing wise - not personal life wise).

But now it's the complete opposite. I'm starting to think more and more
that Joey WILL be a Cup champion one day (as long as he sticks with this
Penske team). And with Brad, I honestly don't see him having as much
success as I originally thought he would (I'd have to think that his ego
is gonna be damaged by the rise of Joey and Blaney at Penske - how he
handles those two coming up should determine a lot about his future
success).

the race, and the fact that one of the late cautions fell in the middle
of a pit cycle. She's still 28th in points. She was never a threat to
win, even on the last restart.

Let's be real. Kevin Harvick ran great all night. Well, almost all
night. If anyone other than the race winner deserves to be talked about
the day after, it would be him.

Absolutely. And if you want to dig a bit deeper, there are a ton of
other names that I'm excited about. Ben Rhodes is a star in the making
even at just 17 years of age, and at this point should be considered an
early favorite to take over Jimmie Johnson's Cup ride once Dos Jotas
retires. Erik Jones is looking like the best driver to come out of ARCA
since Kyle Busch. Daniel Suarez is overrated, but has definite
potential. Kenzie Ruston is the future of females in stock car racing.
Cole Custer, Brandon Jones, and John Hunter Nemechek have quietly been
having spectacular runs during their limited Truck appearances. The
future of stock car racing is brighter than it's ever been.

I'll say this in support of Brad: despite how much of an ass he can be,

I've seen seems to suggest he's a great teammate. Also considering that
he's Ryan's mentor and obviously has taken a liking to the kid, I doubt
Brad's ego would take too much bruising once Ryan takes the next step
up. Kyle Busch would be another story, however...

I say Brad will win aleast one more championship. However with Joey and
Ryan coming up, he'd better do it soon. With the all the young talent
coming up even Jimmie Johnson time is short.

I'm gonna be so excited the day Joey wins a Cup championship, I'd scream
and maybe even run around the yard. I think either Joey or Austin Dillon
will the first Cup champion born in the 90's. Kyle Larson and perhaps if
he stays healthy, Trevor Bayne could follow. Joey and Kyle could be
equally talented. Trevor and Austin are harder to call, as Trevor has
more wins (by 1 Daytona 500) but their top-5 and top-10 counts are
equal. Trevor has more laps led (29 vs. 4), but also has more races (55
vs. 38).

I remember that; the contact he had with Truex there severely damaged
his car and put him in the garage for many laps, relegating him to a
40th place finish. That was payback for that?

I have to echo what murb said last week. I've pretty much given up hope
on Kyle. He is probably the most naturally talented driver out there,
and if he stopped running all the lower series races and letting all the
little things distract him, his career could definitely rival Jimmie
Johnson's to date. But he always lets little things cloud his head and
lets his temper get the best of him, and when he gets behind, rather
than focusing on trying to overcome adversity, almost always throws in
the towel and finds ways to make his day even worse than it already is.
Out of all the NASCAR drivers I've seen, he's by and far the WORST at
handling any kind of pressure.

The media keeps trying to tell us every year that Kyle Busch has matured
and he has really changed a lot as a driver, but just when it seems like
he might actually be turning a corner, he throws a temper tantrum or
causes havoc and makes it perfectly clear he hasn't matured. It's to the
point where I'm convinced that the phrase "new, mature Kyle Busch" is a
total oxymoron. If he hasn't matured by now, I honestly doubt he ever will.

Not to sound arrogant or pompous, but I've always thought that Ryan
Blaney was a better overall driver than Chase Elliott. Elliott may be
leading the pack in Nationwide, but he has the full support of Hendrick
behind him. Blaney, on the other hand, is third in the Truck standings,
with a emphatic win under pressure yesterday. He's up against some VERY
talented young guns in that series, whereas the cupboards are relatively
bare in NNS (a few Cup retreads and career minor-leaguers are pretty
much all that series has to offer).

That's not to say, however, that Chase can't be successful. He seems to
know how to avoid distractions (he's got that robotic personality, which
helps), and he could very well be a winner in the Cup series within a
few years. That being said, I'm predicting that Ryan will be a champion
first. Penske is very good these days.

active drivers who would be on that list? I say "active" because saying
"ever" will kind of be way too vauge, and also we'll be comparing

Most talented active drivers? About two years ago, Stewart would be on
top of the list. Now I'm not sure. Gordon would likely be there, he
seems to have that freaky car-control thing back that he had from the
90's. Most of the currently succesful drivers we have I would considered
better in strategy and luck then talent. Larson and Ky. Busch would have
to be up there, but Kyle Busch is squandering it daily. Maybe Kurt (?)

I think the top-6 in the Nationwide, other than Smith, Sadler or perhaps
Brian Scott, could make it in the Cup and maybe the Roush rookies as
well could handle the Cup in time. Smith and Sadler are Cup rejects.
Sadler' older and Smith might be almost AAAA* equivalent in NASCAR, not
quite good enough for the Cup. Smith had a win stripped and only got one
more in his Cup years, but's he's a potential Nationwide champ, since
he's been the leader so many week. If Chase stumbles bad enough, Smith
could regain the lead. Brian's iffy to me, actually. He's in the top-5
but Nationwide winless, so he's a toughie to call. Maybe James Buescher,
as he has a win in the series. The others are retreads and minor leaguers.
*a little too good for the minor-leagues but not quite big league
material. I saw the term on Yahoo! once.

My take on the current crop of NW leaders:

We know the eventual Cup destinations of three: Trevor Bayne to the 6
for Roush Fenway in 2015, Ty Dillon to Childress, and Chase Elliott with
Hendrick.

Chris Buescher is currently at the head of the line for the next open
seat at Roush after Bayne moves up unless one of the other development
drivers makes a big leap forward. But, I can also see Roush filling the
next open seat (probably Biffle's) with a Cup veteran if he doesn't feel
any of the in-house candidates are strong enough.

Brian Scott, meh. Could get a Cup ride because he brings sponsorship,
but not on par with Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, or Kyle Larson as far as
raw talent.

Elliott Sadler is pushing 40, his Cup future is limited to fill-in work
for good teams or full-time for a field filler. Staying in Nationwide
might be the smartest choice.

Regan Smith I believe will find his way back to a full-time Cup ride, he
has a little more upside than Sadler. With the younger prospects coming
up, he won't get an offer for an elite ride, but if he lands with a
stable second-tier team he should be able to extend his Cup career and
occasionally surprise people with a good finish.

One Nationwide driver that I see as a dark horse is Jeremy Clements.
He's been driving for a family owned team, and getting respectable
results. It's not enough evidence to move him up to Cup, but I'd love to
see him signed with a Nationwide team with more resources.

Mark Martin never ran more than 15 NNS races in a season. During his
time in the #60 Roush car, Martin ran 129 out of 264 NNS events between
1992 and 2000, or 48% of the races, compared to 25-26 racesper year for
Busch, 64% of the total NNS races run since 2005, and Martin only ran 2
truck races in 1996 and never made another start in the series until
2005, compared to Busch also running 115 truck races over the past 10
years, which is 49% of all truck races run in that period. Plus, Martin
wasn't also trying to balance running his own team as well as running
8-10 late model races a year. Busch is easily running twice as many
non-cup races per year that Martin was.

During his "buschwacking" years, Martin run 131 minor league races to
285 cup races (45%), while since moving to the cup series full-time,
Kyle Busch has competed in 413* minor league races to 359 cup races
(including his 2011 Texas suspension), or 115%, so he's actually ran 54
MORE minor league races than cup races since moving to cup full-time.
That's just downright pathetic, and that's why the Busch / Martin
comparison is never brought up.

factoring in NNS, trucks, K&N, late models, etc.

Brian Scott has Cup raced a bit, but I can't tell if he'll do so full
time. I'm pumped about Trevor's move to the Cup. I really hope he can
make some noise, which means hoping he sticks around. He's fit enough to
according to someone in this Facebook group I joined this summer.

Man I've never really been impressed by Brian Scott. He's done nothing
in his career that's made me go, damn that's incredible! (no Kyle Petty
joke intended) About the only thing he'd done that's made me think he's
any good was that Richmond Nationwide race that he dominated, leading
all but the final 11 laps. Other than that, he's a dud.

Clay Rogers entered at Richmond? Cool.

Hey man, you want Position Through Attrition? Look at races in NASCAR's
early years. Not to downplay the accomplishment of a woman finishing
fifth, but Sara Christian finished 10 laps behind in that race. In an
era that drivers would just show up at the track driving the car that
was entered in a race with no prior testing and development, Christian
probably just rode around out there on that 1/2-mile dirt track near
Pittsburgh and survived for a top-five.

In other news, it's been announced that the Truck series will be
returning to Mosport next year, and there also are rumors that a
Nationwide race may be coming in 2016...stay tuned.

Clements' chances of driving for anyone besides family took a huge hit
with his ill-considered remark early last year. I don't know if he can
ever live that down. There always be any number of equally talented
drivers without that baggage.

I'm by no means a Patrick fan but that is just unfair. Yes, she's in way
over her head. But she does have some talent and she has shown definite
improvement over the last two seasons.

As much as i'd like too make fun of Mikey for doing DWTS, i must be
honest. I think Mikey would do decent at it. Mikey has always kept
himself in pretty good shape (he runs marathons and stuff, which takes
stamina and endurance. Dancing would be concidered a sprit if one where
too use a running term.) Anyone can be a half-way decent dancer with
practice.

I hope Nationwide goes too Mosport and shoves it the Montreal track
promoters face for not keeping NASCAR at the track. N'wide put on good

428, position though attrition, as you call it, has always been a part
of racing. In fact, in the days before equipment got much more reliable,
most races were won that way. How many times over the years have we seen
the leader drop out of a race and the guy running second or third end up
inheriting the win? In fact, A.J. Foyt won three of his four
Indianapolis 500s that way. And while the rules you have today make it
easier to recover if you fall one lap down, if you fall more than one
lap down, it's almost impossible to make it up, and we saw examples of
both of these things at Atlanta. We saw a number of cars go a lap down,
either through getting lapped on the track or through an ill-timed pit
stop, and they got back into contention via the free pass. But we also
saw that it's virtually impossible to come back from more than one lap
down because all the leaders start in front of the lapped cars. Jeff
Gordon had the second-fastest car most of the race, but because he had
to start behind all the leaders on every restart after falling two laps
behind, there was no possible way for him to make up the lost ground
until every car one lap down got a free pass, since using the
wave-around is a lost cause at Atlanta. (He did manage to make up one
lap when the leaders pitted and the caution came out hen the 2, 11, and
98 had heir get-together exiting turn four.) If he had been able to use
the wave-around, he might have won the race going away.

But "position by attrition" has been a key part of auto racing
throughout it's entire existence. After all, the idea has always been to
run hard and finish the race.

And also, @428, if you're going to bag on Danica for finishing sixth as
a result of free passes, then what about the fact that the seventh,
ninth, tenth, and 12th place finishers also required the use of the free
pass? Ryan Newman (seventh), Aric Almirola (ninth), Greg Biffle (tenth),
and Jamie McMurray (12th) also needed the free pass, and Biffle looked
as bad as anyone early in the race. And of those that used the free pass
and finished among the leaders, only McMurray stayed on the lead lap
after his free pass longer than Danica, because once she got her second
free pass on the third caution, she stayed on the lead lap for the rest
of the race, and finished ahead of anyone that got a free pass during
the event.

As I've stated before, I'm no fan of Danica, but I must be fair and
impartial and state the facts as they are, and the fact remains that she
came within about two feet of her first top five finish in the Cup
Series, and she had to race for her position, and the fact that she
finished sixth, her best in the Cup Series, under those circumstances,
means that she earned every bit of it.

But isn't staying out of trouble when it finds others and keeping
yourself in position to get the Lucky Dog when you go a lap down at
least somewhat impressive? Besides, after she got her second Lucky Dog,
she never lost a lap again and ran top 15 from that point on.

If Danica had restarted 3rd on that final restart instead of 4th, she
would have had a legitimate shot at the win.

I'd planned on watching this race, but I went to a fair that another
town was having with a few friends of mine and was gone during the whole
race. Looks like Kahne has put a bit of good into this bad season he is
having.

Shocking to see a 6th place finish by Danica. Races like Kansas earlier
in the year and this race are unexplained good runs out of the blue from
her after just being another car out there in every other race.

New qualifying procedure for Talladega and I assume for restrictor plate
races save for the Daytona 500 moving forward. I copy/pasted the long
form from Jayski, essentially the packs for qualifying will be smaller
and each session will only be 5 minutes long. Anyone who saw the spring
'Dega and the Daytona(one round only) qualifying knew that with large
packs of cars running at half speed in the middle of the track, it was a
surprise that a catastrophe hadn't happened yet.

Three rounds with the first round divided into two groups amongst the
competitors. The first qualifying round is five minutes in length for
each group.
· Competitors will be assigned to a first qualifying round group based
on the random draw held earlier in the event.
· The 24 eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed
from either of the first qualifying round groups will advance to the
second round. The remaining competitors will be sorted based on their
speed posted in the first round of qualifying in descending order.
· There will be a 10-minute break after the completion of the first
qualifying round and the 24 remaining competitors that advance to the
second round will have their times reset.
· The second qualifying round is five minutes in length and the 12
eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed will advance
to the third and final round.
· The fastest remaining competitors will earn positions 13-24 based on
their fastest single lap speed posted in qualifying in descending order.
· Following a five minute break, the 12 eligible competitors that
advance to the final round will have their posted speeds reset.
· The final qualifying round is five minutes in length and the fastest
single lap speed will determine positions 1-12 in descending order.

Apparently, the top two candidates to replace Marcos Ambrose in the #9
car next year (assuming he does leave) are David Ragan and Sam Hornish
Jr. I really hope Sam gets it. I think he's been proving the past couple
of years that he's absolutely ready for another shot at Cup. He did a
great job subbing in the #22 when Allmendinger was suspended, and he
also did an impressive job in the #11 at Fontana this year (he drove
pretty far up after starting in the back) when Denny had his weird eye
thing. So I hope he gets the #9. I think he'd be a nice fit with that
team too. He and Almirola would be nice duo for RPM to build around.

And as for Ragan, I actually want to see him do what Hornish (as well as
Elliott Sadler and Regan Smith) did and go full time NNS racing. If he
were to get hooked up with a good team over there (which is certainly
possible - Roush will have an opening with Trevor moving to Cup, JRM may
have an opening if Regan moves back up to Cup, and RCR has yet to
announce their plans), I think he would instantly make himself a part of
a title battle.

So I hope all that happens. I want to see Hornish in the #9 next year,
and Ragan running the full time "reinvention" schedule in NNS that we've
seen numerous guys do in recent years.

I wouldn't be disappointed if either of them got the #9 car for next
year, although like you said, I'd rather see Ragan run a full season of
Nationwide before entering Cup again, a la Regan Smith (hopefully he
gets another chance at Cup as well, I think he'd be in the #10 car if
sponsors didn't have so much control over that decision). Both Hornish
and Ragan are likeable guys and I'd like to see them have success.

With the new win and your in rule for the chase, you will never see a
driver step down like Elliott Sadler did anymore, David Ragan will stay
with Front Row just for the simle fact he's at the cup level and has 3

Newsflash: The "position through attrition" argument is something you
use when talking about a Talladega race or something where half the
field wrecks. Not when someone finishes 6th a cookie-cutter track race
where there were still 38 cars running at the finish, 19 of which were
on the lead lap.

BTW, Danica had already made the pass for 4th BEFORE the Harvick wreck.
Watch the replay. Yes, the outside line sucked on restarts all night
which helped her cause there, but she didn't get the position "because
everyone in front of her wrecked."

Number of drivers eligible to win the championship this week with the
new format and points reset: 16.

Drivers who would be within 480 points of the leader this week (maximum
48 points earned per race, 10 races left on the schedule: 29 (everyone
from Justin Allgaier up).

However, the new elimination system creates drama by gradually reduces
that field, while the old system... uh, nevermind... Brian France is a
genius, don't question it.

She was the top finisher at both Martinsville races in 2013. And to be
fair, she also was the top finisher at TBR in 6 of her 10 starts.

Although as the above poster noted, top finisher does not necessarily
indicate fastest. In terms of driver rating, she was the top performer
for SHR twice - the Daytona 500 and spring Talladega in 2013. (And for
TBR, the aforementioned races in 2012.)

Though the final results haven't always showed it, Atlanta has always
been one of Martin Truex Jr.'s better tracks, but this night was one to
forget as he was involved in a controversial late caution and finished
outside the top 20. This outlier of a finish sticks out like a sore
thumb - in the last 8 Cup races at Atlanta, this 23rd is his only finish
worse than 8th.

One of the three best chances Danica had of being the first woman to
finish in the top 5 since NASCAR's debut season in 1949 with Sara
Christian. She came up short in a photo finish with Carl Edwards. (The
other 2 races I'm referring to are 2013 Daytona and 2014? Chase
Talladega {the one she was leading the cars who pitted when the last
caution came out in the midst of pit stops})

Allen Bestwick, Andy Petree and Dale Jarrett were the commentators. Dave
Burns, Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Jim Noble were the pit road reporters.
