I generally don't have a problem with start & parks and have defended them, as it's often just the nature of the business, but when they're the back-ups of teams that are already multi-car, one or the other should have withdrawn. If both attempt to run the whole race, I'll withdraw my complaint. 17. But what do they have now instead of the Top-35 rule? I've missed about the past 2 1/2 seasons because of school and stuff, what do they have now? I think I'll have to put Larson on spoiler alert tomorrow. If he wins that'd be really something. 19. Here's to Edwards or Harvick winning! That would result in a six-way tie atop the point standings entering the Chase! Speaking of Harvick, what are your thoughts on Happy? Every single week that 4 car is on rails, it's super fast, but when it comes to racing, either the speed that they had in practice/qualifying is gone or his pit crew f**ks him over. Harvick is literally one of the toughest guys to pick every week. I have no clue how he'll finish. It's an enigma. 23. joey2448 posted: 09.06.2014 - 3:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Clint Bowyer qualified highest (6th) among the four guys in contention for the final Chase spot by points. Bowyer is 23 points behind Greg Biffle, who holds the 16th and final Chase spot and qualified 17th. Biffle is guaranteed a spot in the Chase if he finishes 22nd or better, and if there is a new winner (that is not Kenseth or Newman), Biffle needs to out-point Newman by 19 points and stay ahead of Bowyer and Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson is 24 points behind Biffle and qualified 8th. Ryan Newman qualified 12th and just has to finish 41st or better to clinch a Chase berth by points (or 18th or better if a winless driver wins Saturday). The following drivers can only make the Chase with a win at Richmond (and a top-30 spot in the standings): Paul Menard, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers, Marcos Ambrose, Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Danica Patrick, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, David Gilliland, David Ragan and Cole Whitt. 24. murb posted: 09.06.2014 - 4:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "what are your thoughts on Happy?" I don't see him winning the championship (or even being in the "Final Four" at Homestead) this year. I just think his pit crew (they've been costing him in the pits all year) and his streakiness as a driver will ultimately end up doing him in this year. I do think it was a great move by him to go to SHR (RCR is now nothing more than the Dillons personal playground), and I do think that he'll win his fair share of races there over the next few years, but it's pretty obvious to me that this #4 team still has a lot of bugs to work out. I'd be stunned if they somehow pulled it off. 25. Hinch27 posted: 09.06.2014 - 7:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Apparently no one knows the RIP in peace or RAS syndrome joke. 26. It's a real shame, he won multiple races with MWR BEFORE they were known as a Chase contending team (yeah, one of them was a total fluke but he still had several races before then where he ran well enough to win), not to mention helped the team build up from their struggles when they entered the sport, and he got rewarded by losing his ride and not being able to reap the benefits from when they finally did become competitive. As for rain, hopefully it doesn't rain tonight when the race is supposed to be going. It feels like he just disappeared." In hindsight, Michael Waltrip literally ended his career just to have two years (which turned into a year and a half) of Mark Martin (love Mark, but as I look back at his final years, his heart really wasn't in it after losing the 2009 title). And it's a god damn travesty. David already proved that he could win in MWR's horrific equipment, so I have to believe that we would have seen some drastic improvement with him had he stayed with them for 2012 (they had some badass cars that year for some reason - probably because they brought in Scott Miller, who in turn brought in a bunch of RCR notes). He, Bowyer, and Truex would have been a great trio to build around. But, like always, Michael Waltrip had to go and mess everything up. Not just with David, but with his entire TEAM. First, it was firing Reutimann, and then it was SpinGate in this very race last year (which pushed both Truex and longtime sponsor NAPA out the door). And now, instead of being arguably one of the top four teams in Nascar (like they were in 2012, and like they probably would have been had they not done anything stupid and just rolled with a Bowyer/Reutimann/Truex lineup), they are just kind of a whatever team now. Bowyer is pretty much just treading water as a 12th-15th place driver (I think he's better than that), and Vickers is just running mediocre like he usually does (though I do expect him to run well next year, since his contract is coming up - he always has his best seasons in contract years for some reason). But back to Reutimann, like I said, it's a total shame. I think in the right ride, he'd be capable of having a nice Ward Burton type Cup career. But he got totally shafted by MWR. It really sucks. Hopefully he'll be able to pick up a decent full time Truck or NNS ride or something and sort of reinvent himself, but unfortunately it doesn't look very likely at this point. 46. someone posted: 09.06.2014 - 6:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) meh I dunno about reutimann, he was good at first, but in 2011 didn't he only get 3 top 10s and was 26th or so in points? 47. He did have a bad year that year, but even then he did show a few signs of still being competitive (the Kentucky race in particular comes to mind - he finished 2nd and led a few laps late in that race). I think he would have done good had he still been there in 2012. 49. someone posted: 09.06.2014 - 7:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 48: agreed, I wish he wasn't fired and I think he could've been a contender in 2012. but 2011 was BRUTAL for him! 50. No, Truex would've been out. Newman and Truex were outside the top 10 even if they had finished where they were running before the spin. The 2 wildcards would've gone to Kahne and Newman with 2 wins and Truex with 1 win would've fallen short. He has the label, instead, of 'Couldn't Hold A Cup Ride; he's 'Damaged Goods', and that's a label that is very, very hard to shake in NASCAR. Kenseth was the only Toyota in the top-10 in points entering tonight, Kyle Busch has been almost irrelevant since May, and both Busch and Hamlin are fortunate they won relatively early in the season and thus were relieved of the burden of having to qualify for the Chase. It's not as if Bowyer has dramatically underperformed as compared to them. Indeed, Toyota as a manufacturer has earned two victories all season, while Kenseth won seven alone last year. That's a fairly revealing statistic, and supports the idea that Toyota has been at a disadvantage this year, for whatever reason. 228. cjs3872 posted: 09.06.2014 - 11:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It likely is, because it was hot and steamy, and there were very few caution periods to allow the drivers a breather where they could just ride around and not exert any energy. And the four caution periods this race did have were all brief, consuming just 27 of the race's 400 laps. Any time you have a hot and steamy day, and combine that with a race with very little time spent under the caution flag, not to mention the fact that nobody had a good handling car in this race, except for Brad Keselowski, and you're going to get exhausted drivers, and the fact that there were no on-track incidents in this entire race shows just how god these drivers are, because I can guarantee that if this race got to Jimmie Johnson, one of the most fit drivers in the sport (definitely in the top five in that regard), others had to be exhausted in the latter stages just the same as he was, if not even worse. But again, I think races like this one shows once again just how good of athletes these drivers really are, because an incredible amount of endurance is needed to perform at a high level, and anyone that denies that should just take a look at how spent the drivers are after they get out of their cars, and it's always been that way. Just look at some of the old-time footage of Cale Yarborough after he got out of his car, and you'll see what I mean, because he gave every bit of himself every time he went out. The drivers of today have it somewhat easier, but they still have to give it their all, and the fact that Jimmie Johnson had to be assisted to the infield care center, as good of shape as he always keeps himself in, and that tells me that he gave it his all on this hot, steamy night. 229. As for yesterday's uneventful race, I think it's not right to compare yesterday's race to the ones of the 1970s just because the field was spread out so much and one driver led almost the whole race. The difference between now and then lies in the attrition factor of the races. That and Welker taking mollies and getting caught and suspended for the playoffs then John Fox being framed for armed robbery (then being exonerated and released AFTER the playoffs). Actually, I always figured the chase would be a good thing for Jeff. He showed from '95-'01 (except for '98) that him trying to protect a lead in the points late in a season was a huge issue. In '95 and '97, he damn near coughed up HUGE late season (I'm talking last 4-5 races) leads only to be saved by the bell. He did cough up a 100 point lead in 1996 and lost the Winston Cup. Also 2001 saw a pretty sorry late season run, but the teams that had chased him all year, the Yates team of DJ and Rudd, were even worse. He didn't have a single Top 5 finish after his late September Kansas win. Shades of the horrible stretch run for the Winston Cup in 1991 between Earnhardt and (ironically) Rudd. We even saw a bit of that in the '07 chase. With a pretty good lead with 5 races left, JJ won the next 4 races, but Jeff didn't help himself with finishes 3rd, 7th, 7th, and 10th. Anyways, I thought the chase would help him stay on his toes at the end of the season. As it turns out, the one weakness in Jeff's otherwise bulletproof armor is his runs after the calendar hits October when he is in title contention (again '98 is the major outlier). And I have no explanation for this. Unlike Peyton in the playoffs, it's not like he just makes the big mistake over and over. He just doesn't go as fast. 279. Seed the drivers in the top ten in points (the top ten did make it this year) by points position first, and then add in the bonus points for wins once you do the position seedings. That way, the teams that have been the best will have the slight advantage they deserve. But as it is right now, drivers who weren't in the top 20 actually have an advantage over those that finished the 26th race as high as sixth. Try to convince me that something's not wrong with that picture? First, the cutoff for Chase eligibility should have been 20th place, not 30th. That's the way it was when they had the Wild Cards in recent years. Then they should go back to the top 12, like it was, with the top ten in points being guaranteed Chase spots with the two Wild Cards. I think the reason they did away with that was the shenanigans that were seen in this race from 2011-'13, because teams (and even manufacturers) were manipulating that, topped off by the craziness of last year. What should be done is that you should seed the top ten teams by points standings first (3 points per position in the current points structure), and then once that's done, then add the wins (again, 3 points per win in the current points structure), with those outside of the top ten getting no bonus points at all. That's the way it should be. The next thing that should be done is to make it so that a driver has to be in the top 20 in points to make it, so they can't back into the Chase, either with a one-time win or by winning a race at heir specialty, such as A.J. Allmendinger winning on a road course. Just about anyone can be in the top 30, but making the cutoff 20th place, or at the very least, no worse than 25th, would make it much more difficult for the fringe drivers to make it. I actually believe that Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson deserve to make the Chase more than Aric Almirola and A.J. Allmendinger do, because they had a better season, even without winning. And had Kurt Busch not gotten into the top 20, I believe that Jamie McMurray would have deserved it over Kurt. A driver should have to earn their way into the Chase over the course of the season on every kind of track, and not by catching lightning in a bottle on one occasion and having a pedestrian run throughout the remainder of the season. 286. I HATE the idea of seeing someone like Gordon or Keselowski (in my opinion, the two best overall drivers this year) screwed out of a championship in favor of Edwards or Newman just because one of the latter ones coasts through the first nine races and then wins Homestead. I think that's a really lame way to decide a Nascar championship. I don't mind the 16 drivers as much anymore (though I do wish they would make the cutoff top 20 instead of top 30, like Cjs was saying), and I am very interested to see how the eliminations and all that play out (I think those will add a lot of intensity to those elimination races at Dover, Talladega, Phoenix, etc). But yeah, I'm just really worried about somebody stealing the title by coasting by and just winning the race at Homestead. In fact, had Clint Bowyer or Jamie McMurray got to the lead last night, it wouldn't have surprised me if Roush had pulled something like that to get Greg Biffle back into the Chase, especially with two drivers having runs so bad that doing something like that wouldn't have affected their night. We're almost certain to see someone do something real funny to help a teammate in the Chase, although what that might be, I have no idea. After all, I believe one reason Kyle Busch spun Martin Truex, Jr. out at Atlanta was to draw a caution and attempt to keep Kasey Kahne from winning, because he wanted Clint Bowyer to get into the Chase, not just because Bowyer is a fellow Toyota driver, but also because Bowyer is not the potential threat to the JGR teams that Kahne is. We may see more stuff like we saw late in the Atlanta race, with drivers trying to intentionally bring out cautions to help their teammates, and possibly spin others out to create them, or to stop on the track when they could make it back to the pits, forcing NASCAR to throw cautions. I really think someone like Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. or Danica Patrick could very easily affect the outcome of the championship by their actions. Something else we could see is a winless driver affect things by winning a race, which would open up an extra spot for drivers to advance via points, and there are drivers that have yet to win that are capable of doing so. Then of course, there's Talladega, where just about anything can happen, and that race could very easily knock someone like Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, or one of the two Penske drivers out of it, simply because of the sheer unpredictability of racing there, and that anyone can get in a wreck running anywhere in the field. Talladega is the reason why we could see someone completely unexpected make the final eight. If a driver like Aric Almirola or A.J. Allmendinger happen to make the first cut (which I can certainly see happening), one of them could easily have a good finish there, perhaps even a win, and make the final eight, while one of this season's heavyweights gets knocked out due to the sheer unpredictability of what can, and usually does happen there. And the thing is, if a driver makes the final eight, he can win the championship because he'll only be racing the other drivers, and if one or more of those certain drivers have a bad run, that could knock them out right then and there. So I think politics, team orders, and Talladega are going to have a big impact on the championship, and someone nobody expects to have a shot right now could get at least to the final eight. 294. So far, here's what I've got: Mark Donohue - 52 (1 Cup/3 USAC/29 Trans-Am/6 Can-Am/1 WSC/12 USRRC) Brad Keselowski - 37 (13 Cup/24 Nationwide) Rusty Wallace - 37 (all Cup) Helio Castroneves - 30 (6 CART/23 IndyCar/1 ALMS) Rick Mears - 29 (7 USAC/22 CART) Will Power - 21 (all IndyCar) Ryan Newman - 20 (13 Cup/7 Nationwide) Timo Bernhard - 16 (16 ALMS) Romain Dumas - 16 (16 ALMS) Kurt Busch - 13 (10 Cup/3 Nationwide) Danny Sullivan - 12 (1 USAC/11 CART) Al Unser, Jr. - 12 (1 USAC/11 CART) Ryan Briscoe - 11 (7 IndyCar/4 ALMS) Emerson Fittipaldi - 11 (1 USAC/10 CART) Paul Tracy - 11 (all CART) Bobby Unser - 11 (1 USAC/10 CART) George Follmer - 10 (5 Trans-Am/5 Can-Am) Sam Hornish, Jr. - 10 (8 IndyCar/2 Nationwide) Gil de Ferran - 9 (4 CART/5 IndyCar) Joey Logano - 7 (4 Cup/3 Nationwide) Sascha Maassen - 7 (7 ALMS) Bobby Allison - 4 (all Cup) Lucas Luhr - 4 (all ALMS) Jeremy Mayfield - 3 (all Cup) Tom Sneva - 3 (all USAC) Al Unser - 3 (1 USAC/2 CART) A.J. It just occurred to me Penske might be including non-points races in that as well. Rusty and Kurt won one Clash/Shootout each, Newman and Kurt won one all-star race each, Mayfield, Hornish, and Newman won all-star qualifiers, Mayfield won the No-Bull 25 Shootout qualifying race for the Shootout, Bobby Allison and Kurt Busch won one Daytona 500 qualifier each, and Ryan Briscoe won a non-points IndyCar race at Surfer's Paradise in 2008. It just occurred to me Penske might be counting all these wins, even though some of them seem dubious to me (a qualifying race to get into the all-star shootout?) On form, I'd totally agree with you regarding Allmendinger, Almirola, and even the Roush drivers. But if they perform at an average level and a couple of those we think will be higher up run into unexpected trouble, and they could back their way into the next round simply by the failure of others. And if they sneak into round two, Talladega looms as the finale to round two, and literally anything can happen there, and if one of those supreme dark horses were to get into the second round and then either win or have most of the other Chasers fail at Talladega, then they could easily sneak into round three and be in the final eight. Remember that all it takes is one failure and it could be lights out, even for the Penske or Hendrick team that has that happen to them. Just look at what happened with Joey Logano when he blew up at Chicago last year. Since each round in the Chase is only three races, one failure may be too much to overcome. The guys at the top may be able to get by in round one, due to the fact that 12 drivers will advance, but nobody can afford a mistake from the fourth race of the Chase on. And if that bad race does come, then that could force other mistakes because the teams will then be forced to go all-or-nothing in the two remaining races in each round, and that can only lead to more errors. If one of the top guys runs into trouble at Chicago, it could be "all she wrote" for their title hopes. I actually think a more conservative team may have a better chance the many think, because they'll simply be out to finish the race and take whatever position they get and move on. In other words, I think Ryan Newman's got a good chance, at least to get into the final eight, because no team can points race like RCR can, and that will be important as the round in the Chase move along. Conservative racing may be the key to moving on to the second round, luck will be a major factor with Talladega looming at the end of the second round, and then we'll see who's left with four races to go. I'd like Roush's chances for the same reason I like Newman's chances to get to at least the third round, but they're too far off the pace and may even have trouble getting out of the first round, unless others have unexpected trouble. 303. Kyle Busch hasn't had a top 10 since finishing 2nd at Indy. That is not good for a driver that traditionally struggles in the chase along with having a Toyota engine. Toyota themselves even said they are behind in horsepower. Toyota being behind in horsepower is one the reasons JGR only has 2 cup wins this season and isn't as fast as last year. 304. cjs3872 posted: 09.07.2014 - 6:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, the same can be said about Denny Hamlin, Eric. As bad as Kyle Busch is faring, Denny Hamlin is faring even worse. And the malaise at JGR has now started to hit Matt Kenseth, as he's had two bad races in the last four. And the timing of this can't be coincidental, because this began to happen just as the Carl Edwards situation broke. The fact that they're scrambling to build a fourth team at JGR for Edwards has got to be affecting the other teams there. Remember that JGR finished 2-3-4 at Indy, but the whole organization has done virtually nothing since then, except for Kenseth's run at Bristol, which tells me that the expansion they're having to do for the fourth team now is adversely affecting JGR across the board. Even their NNS team has not been as dominant as it has been in the past, even with Kyle's perfect race at Richmond. It may be that JGR is looking to next year already, and last night's race may have been an indicator of that. If I'm right, we may not see JGR be a significant factor the rest of the year, and if Hamlin and Kyle Busch were both eliminated in the first round, it would not be a complete shock. 305. I really don't like Kyle Busch going into the chase based him not having a top 10 since Indy and has a bad history of doing poorly in the chase. You can argue any of the JGR drivers are capable of not making the 2nd round. Matt is off and on lately. Toyota doesn't the horsepower like it did early last year and JGR hasn't won a race since Talladega. CJS3872 was correct about Biffle and Edwards. My problem with Biffle is he's a streaky driver on the decline. Greg had 5 straight top 10's before getting a 19th place finish at Richmond. You have to wonder if Greg can bounce back from a bad finish at Richmond although I like for the chase better than Carl. Carl has to many issues to deal with. Roush is behind, but top that off with a lame duck driver and Chief that is going to retire from the position after the season ends spells trouble. I also like to throw Kurt Busch's name in the mix. I know Kurt is doing better than he is earlier in the season, but is still capable of having a bad finish like the 2nd Michigan race proved. What makes this even worse is the 41 team isn't strong enough to win at any of the first 3 tracks in the chase even if Kurt gets a bad finish in one of them. Kasey Kahne is another driver that is capable of not making the cut of the first round. I don't like Kahne this year. While Kasey has speed at Indy and Atlanta, he is having a rough season. The only ones that should make the second round, barring a complete disaster, are both of the Penske cars, the top three HMS cars, and Kevin Harvick. Those are the only six that should be semi-locks to make it to the second round. But if one of those have a major problem, and two of those six (Dale, Jr. and Joey Logano) had blown engines in the Chase opener at Chicago last year, then even they might have some difficulty making it into the second round, though they should make it in, based on their performance and consistency so far this season. The one qualifier here is the pressure of being one of the favorites to win it all, because, except for Jimmie Johnson and the #48 HMS team, none of the others have been under such pressure entering the Chase in recent years, if ever, and the pressure of being one of the favorites can do strange and unexpected things to a team. 309. I really thought that NASCAR was just desperate for a caution when the threw it for a guy on the fence, but after seeing the picture it obviously wasn't, at least that caution didn't screw any particular drivers. Barring any disasters I'm really not expecting to see any surprises in the chase based off previous performance. Of the 8 drivers who will make it to the third round I think about seven of them are locks. I fully expect Keselowski, Logano, Kenseth, Harvick, Gordon, Johnson, and Earnhardt Jr to make it to the third round. Jack Roush's organization is very hit or miss, and in general their ceiling this year seems to be about a top 10 or maybe a top 5. Biffle this year has not shown the strength to even be consistent and Carl Edwards lame duck status raises questions. Joe Gibbs Racing has had the same issues. The 18 team seems to be falling apart, has no momentum, and has shown very little strength in the middle portion of the season. Denny Hamlin is like Greg Biffle this year, hit or miss. We just watched him finish 21st two laps down at a track that was his personal playground. Combine that with a team who is getting their crew chief back after six weeks of suspension, I don't think that things bode well for the 11 in the chase. Only Matt Kenseth of late has looked alive in the JGR camp, combine that with the fact that they've been the fastest and most consistent and had the fewest distractions the 20 should certainly lead the JGR and Toyota camp in the chase. Many of Matt's near wins this year have come recently also. With the exception of Matt, none of these teams have even proved capable of scoring points with consistency if needed. Kasey Kahne, Kurt Busch, and Ryan Newman are like Hamlin and Biffle, at best they've been the occasional top 5 team this year. Newman can probably get through rounds on consistency but that will only get him so far given that my top 7 can probably do better. As much as I like them, Almirola and Allmendinger are the chase bottom feeders, I expect both to be out at the end of the first round, although the second is an ever so slight possibility for Almirola. They'll be out as quickly as they got in. Obviously anything can happen as CJS has said, but the top 6 chase seeds and Kenseth are so much better off I feel. With that said, I'm not taking this system seriously at all, and if the champion isn't one of those 7 the system is BS. Now to spend all week closely watching the 10th Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week. The 88 team last year basically taped up the entire grille of the car due to the damage from the pit road accident and the engine got blew up as a result. 2.) While you mentioned only chase drivers that had blown up engine, there was an unusual amount of engines blew up at Chicagoland last year. There was 7 engines that blew up. 3.) The Chicagoland race was forced to be run late Sunday Night due to rain instead of being a day race. That is a big deal because of the cooler temperatures late at night compare to day and was one of the reasons for the amount of engine problems. The temperatures were in the low 50's late at night for Chicagoland last year according to accuweather. 314. Eric posted: 09.07.2014 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I am not going mention the weather yet for Chicagoland since its too early for that. Mr. X, I am not 100 percent sure about Harvick for the 3rd round. While Kevin hasn't had a finish outside of the top 20 since loudon, the 4 team is capable of self destructing due to mistakes by Kevin or the pit crew despite how fast the team was during the race. That is a key due to Talladega. Talladega is ultimate wild card due to the potential of the big one. 315. Mr X posted: 09.07.2014 - 11:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Back when Kevin Harvick was racing at RCR Darrell Waltrip referred to the team as junkyard dogs. I feel that's a pretty accurate description, even now at SHR. Kevin and the team are hard to keep down. For the most part I think that Kevin is one of the most talented, and precise and most mistake free drivers in the garage area. Outside of his stupid altercation with Denny Hamlin at Bristol, he hasn't made many recent mistakes as a driver. The 4 car is generally one of the cleanest cars at the end of the race, and so was the 29, and most of the time Kevin can make up time and positions once the green drops. Frankly the team costs Kevin a lot more then Kevin costs the team. The fact that Kevin has lost the lead 8 times in caution flag pitstops in the last 2 races says it all. The cars have also been fast and the finishes have been good. Last night they finished 5th after running in the top 5 all evening, and they weren't one of the 41 cars that failed to lead last night either. We all know what happened in Atlanta, the 11th in Bristol was a late pitroad speeding penalty(a rare occurrence for Harvick), also slightly explanitory given the pit crews performance. Loudon was a fuel strategy that didn't work out, like Gordon they ran well there. The risk of disaster with this team is usually no greater then some small in race mistakes from which Kevin and the car can usually mostly recover from, despite the crew. In the first 26 races the 4 car has been amongst the best 2 or 3, and has probably been the best in the last handful. They haven't had a slow car yet this year really, and most gambles they've taken can be attributed to the fact that they've basically been locked in the chase since April. I think even there recent performance will be enough for round 3, and I expect them to be able to turn up the wick come Chicago. 316. cjs3872 posted: 09.08.2014 - 12:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That was an unusual race at Chicago last year, Eric. With the rain, the blown engines, and everything else that happened, anything close to a repeat doesn't look likely at all, but what I was saying is that, if any of the top contenders see a repeat of what happened to Dale, Jr. and Joey Logano happen to them, their Chase may be over because there will be only two races to recover, instead of as many as nine. That's why we may see an unusual amount of conservative racing, even among some of the leaders, because nobody wants to lose their shot in the very first race, and except for the top six performers this season (Harvick, Logano, Keselowski, and the three top HMS cars), nobody else can afford a bad race, because I don't think anyone outside that top six can win at any time, and any mistake made in the Chase opener, or the first race in each of the two following rounds, may end up forcing further mistakes by those teams trying to play catch-up. But what caught out teams last year at Chicago was that they started the race in hot conditions, and finished it under much cooler conditions, which may have led to all the engine problems. And by the way, it looks like it will be in the high 50s and low 60s around the time they'll be racing. 317. joey2448 posted: 09.08.2014 - 3:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Richmond is an odd track in that it seems you're either gonna get a really exciting, beatin-and-bangin, drama-filled race, or you'll get a dull, boring race with no contact. I wanted to also add Kenseth in place of Harvick, but I just know the 20 team is gonna run into some kind of problem at some point. Harvick is pretty iffy himself with all the strange problems that 4 team has, but I honestly didn't see anyone else to replace him with. BTW i was at a butt-beating at Daytona in 2005, Tony Stewert lead all but 9 laps that night, 9 LAPS. And people pretty much said the same thing that night as tonight." The difference is, I happen to have found the way the cars moved around, to be more exciting even though Tony led all but 9 laps that race. Also, about Matt Kenseth. I wanted to mention Matt Kenseth's struggle to get a win this year. Since the inaugural of the Chase back in 2004, the runner-up position simply cannot get together their season following that. Just take a long over the years of how much everyone has gone through. 2003 to 2004: Jimmie Johnson. Yes, this wasn't a chase, but it still shows that Jimmie Johnson lucked out vs Kurt Busch's luck. Kurt Busch hung on to win his championship, even though Jimmie won a handful of races that year. 2004 to 2005: Jimmie Johnson, again. Jimmie Johnson crashed at Homestead to fall from 2nd to 5th in points that year. At the time, it was considered Johnson's worst Cup season to date, until 2011 came along, in terms of points position. We should always exclude rookie season because, well, it's their first season, duh. If this never happened, Jimmie would have been stuck with this "runner-up curse" & probably wouldn't have been 5 time today. 2005 to 2006: Greg Biffle & Carl Edwards. They both tied for 2nd that year, but because Biffle won 6 to Csrl's 4, Biffle won the tiebreaker. Both Biffle & Edwards missed the championship. In fact, Tony Stewart did as well as for the top 3 drivers of 2005 to miss the Chase, which is a major change from 2005 to 2006. Carl Edwards was winless, but still beat Greg Biffle for 12th in Points, even though Biffle won twice that year. 2006 to 2007: Matt Kenseth finishes 2nd to Jimmie Johnson in 2006, but is probably the only successful season to have following his runner-up finish, to finish 4th in points with his 2 wins being nearly the exact opposite end of the season (Winning the 2nd race & 36th race). Even though he finished 4th, it was also his last season with Robbie Reiser as crew chief, as Robbie went to another role in Jack Roush's building. Which led Kenseth to be winless in 2008. 2007 to 2008: Just like Matt Kenseth (for both 2008 AND 2010), Jeff Gordon has his first ever winless season, excluding his rookie season. 2008 to 2009: Carl Edwards finally had a taste of the runner-up position after Greg Biffle beat him in 2005. Which didn't help him any also, he went winless again in 2009. 2009 to 2010: Mark Martin misses the chase, becomes winless after winning 5 races & battling Jimmie Johnson for the championship in 2009. 2010 to 2011: Denny Hamlin had a fantastic year in 2010 until the final two races bit them, losing it to Jimmie Johnson. Which caused them to have a horrific year in 2011, despite winning Michigan. 2011 to 2012: The famous "Carl Edwards vs Tony Stewart Tiebreaker" war. Carl Edwards, once again, goes winless in 2012. Stop finishing second man. 2012 to 2013: After snatching 2nd from Jimmie Johnson by a SINGLE point, having his best season yet & winning 3 races, Clint Bowyer goes winless in 2013. Wonder if Jimmie would have won his 2013 championship if Bowyer didn't take the position, know what I mean? On top of that, Bowyer gets penalized & pretty much sent Michael Waltrip Racing on a downward spiral since he had to itch his arm (spinning & messing up the results of the Richmond race). Losing NAPA & Martin Truex Jr (Costing Truex's Chase position on the grid in the process as well). Didn't fare well for Bowyer at all here. 2013 to 2014: An incredible season put together by Matt Kenseth, Jason Ratcliffe & the entire 20 team, winning 7 races in 2013. After losing the championship battle to Jimmie Johnson, so far in 2014, including Joe Gibbs Racing's under performance compared to last season, Matt Kenseth is the only JGR driver yet to win. So call me crazy for pointing this out, but do we believe in the "Runner-Up Curse" now? 327. Kyle Busch only won at Fontana because the other drivers had older tires. Kyle's car for that race was only good for a few laps for each run and that is all Kyle needed at Fontana. Denny winning at Talladega is more caused by restrictor plate racing being a track that anyone has a possible to win at because of the big wrecks and there really isn't an advantage in equipment from the have or have nots. 331. A driver who finishes 2nd in the standings going into the following season has gone either: Winless, struggled week in & week out on performance, or doesn't finish well in the standings, aka missing the chase. Matt's been the best JGR driver this season, but he can't close the deal on the W yet so far while his teammates has, whither they pulled an upset or not. So whatever chances they may have had of a good Chase went out the window for that reason alone. Quite a bit of their resources are now dedicated to that, instead of their three Cup teams in the Chase. It's true that Toyota being behind hasn't helped them or Michael Waltrip Racing, but MWR was torpedoed by the fact that they lost one of their teams, due to "Spingate", and now JGR is hurt by the fact that quite a bit of their attention has been diverted into forming that fourth team for Carl Edwards. Which brings me to this question. Which of the JGR teams is going to be hurt by the addition of Edwards to the lineup for 2015, because every time JGR has added a driver since going to three teams in 2005, the performance of one of the others has been adversely affected. And I'll say this. If Joey Logano ends up winning the title, this will truly have been a disastrous year for JGR, even though it was clear as far back as 2011 that they didn't want him any more. I've always thought that a big part of Logano's problem at JGR was not having a mentor, a veteran leader to help him through the inevitable hard time a young driver is going to have. From that standpoint, I don't think it's a accident that he begins to show what he's capable of when he moved on to a team that had the ultimate mentor for young drivers in Roger Penske, not to mention a teammate that wanted him in Brad Keselowski. Young drivers need a steadying hand, and until Matt Kenseth joined JGR, they had always lacked that since Bobby Labonte and later Tony Stewart left. In fact, I think it was the guiding hand of Labonte and Stewart that helped Denny Hamlin get accustomed to the Cup Series, but when Logano got to JGR, they no longer had that, and he suffered as a result. Rick Hendrick knew that, Richard Childress knew that, and Jack Roush always had that until Kenseth left. When Jeff Gordon got to Hendrick Motorsports, Hendrick already had two veteran drivers, Ken Schrader (who had the same racing background as Gordon did) and Ricky Rudd, who Hendrick replaced with Terry Labonte in 1994. Richard Childress intended to have Dale Earnhardt, Sr. act in the mentor's role for a young Kevin Harvick. But all those plans went out the window when Dale, Sr. was killed at the end of the 2001 Daytona 500. And Roush has always known the importance of having experienced drivers mentor younger drivers. Mark Martin mentored Jeff Burton, and both of them mentored Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, and Carl Edwards, and Kenseth was to have become the mentor for Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Trevor Bayne before he left for Gibbs, and that hole is one reason among several why Stenhouse is struggling so mightily. Stenhouse has nobody to mentor him, especially with Carl Edwards leaving, because Stenhouse did look at Edwards as somewhat of a mentor. Bayne has looked outside the Roush organization (and even outside the Ford ranks) for that assistance, partially because there had been nobody within the Roush organization to fill that role until Mark Martin recently returned, basically to mentor Roush's younger drivers. 335. Neither he or Carl Edwards came across to me as that kind of driver, and I think a lack of a mentor has stunted the progress of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., because at the very least, he should be closer to the other Roush drivers, and instead, he's racing some of the single-car teams at the back of the field. And Roush realized that his younger drivers had no real mentors, which is one of the reasons I think he brought Mark Martin back into the fold there. After all, there's a reason why, in his Cup starts, Trevor Bayne has often sought advice from outside the Roush camp, and even outside the Ford camp. He knows that, as much as he's learned from the Wood Brothers about racing in general, they can't help him from the driving aspect, and since Roush hasn't had mentors the last couple of years, Bayne has looked at some of the other drivers, such as the Hendrick drivers, and even some of the other veteran Chevrolet drivers for advice. 338.
